Iran, Drones, Ukraine, and Israel

Voice of America claims that Iran has denied involvement with its drones in Ukraine, but the USA government has a different view:

October 21, 2022

As protests rage at home, Iran’s theocratic government is flexing its military muscle abroad: Tehran has supplied drones to Russia that killed Ukrainian civilians, run drills in a border region with Azerbaijan and bombed Kurdish positions in Iraq.

Iran has denied supplying the drones to Russia, and Russia has denied using them in Ukraine.

Those moves show Iran’s leaders trying to rally hardline support within the country as demonstrations continue over the Sept. 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died in the custody of the country’s morality police.

They also serve as a reminder to the wider Middle East and the West that Iran’s government remains willing to use force both abroad and at home to stay in power.

Further raising the risk of destabilization is Iran’s nuclear program. Tehran now has enough highly enriched uranium to build an atomic bomb if it chooses — and continues to make more as negotiations over its tattered deal with world powers have collapsed. https://www.voanews.com/a/analysis-iran-pushes-militarily-abroad-amid-unrest-at-home-/6799352.html

Officially, the USA government claims that Iranian drones are being used in Ukraine;

The White House said on Thursday that Iranians have been on the ground in Crimea helping Russians target Ukraine with Iranian drones, and that U.S. efforts to negotiate a return to the Iran nuclear deal have been set aside for the time being.

John Kirby, the White House’s top national security spokesperson, told reporters that Russian military personnel, operating remotely from Crimea, have been piloting Iranian drones to launch attacks against Ukrainian targets including Kyiv in recent days.

The United States is now concerned that Russia may seek to acquire advanced conventional weapons from Iran such as surface-to-surface missiles for use against Ukraine, Kirby said. https://www.newsmax.com/world/globaltalk/iran-crimea-kirby/2022/10/20/id/1092754/

The war in Ukraine has an ominous new noise. People living in Afghanistan and Nagorno-Karabakh have talked about a sound that makes them run for cover. It’s not an explosion or a jet screaming overhead, it’s the menacing whirr of a drone. And on Monday, that whirr arrived in the skies above Kyiv.

Russia has ramped up its use of Iranian-made “suicide drones” in Ukraine, which travel in groups and explode by diving at their targets, obliterating themselves in the process. …

Armed drones have been involved in the fighting in Ukraine for months. Until now, both sides have mostly limited their use to the front lines, although Russia used Iranian drones to bombard the port of Odessa and military targets in the city center. But this week’s attacks by Russia mark the beginning of a dark new era for drone warfare in Ukraine. …

Ukrainians are bracing for the possibility that a lot more of these drones will be heading their way. “We know that [Russia] has purchased over 1,000 drones from Iran,” says Rudik. The Shahed-136 is comparatively cheap and expendable, costing $2,000 to $3,000, analysts estimate. “We know that there will be more and more and more, and that is of course terrifying.” Iran has denied providing Russia with drones to use in Ukraine—a denial the US has called a lie. The White House said yesterday it had evidence Iranian troops were on the ground in Crimea, helping Russia to operate the drones.  …

A Shahed-136 is hard to detect. These drones fly low, meaning radar systems struggle to see them. “Unfortunately, it is not possible to hit 100 percent [of them] because the target is difficult,” Ukraine’s air force spokesperson, Yuriy Ihnat, told Reuters. To compensate, Ukraine has started crowdsourcing ways to detect drones early. The country’s armed forces launched an Android app called ePPO, which asks civilians to report sightings of cruise missiles or drones, and share what direction they are traveling.

Once Ukrainians can detect the drones, they still need to figure out the best way to target them. Electronic warfare tools, such as GPS jammers, don’t work well, because analysts believe the Shahed-136s are programmed with their target’s location before they take off. …

Ukraine’s drone problem is one reason the country has been reaching out to Israel, Zwijnenburg says. “Israel has a lot of knowledge on the type of drones Iran produces.” However, Israel—which has previously limited its assistance to Ukraine to humanitarian relief—said this week it would only help the country develop an early-warning system to better protect civilians from air attacks. https://www.wired.com/story/russia-ukraine-drones-shahed-136-iran/

I have been reporting about Iranian drones since 2014. Notice the following from back then:

Iran deployed its new ‘suicide drone’:

TEHRAN, Iran– Iran’s army has deployed a suicide drone for the first time in massive ongoing military drills near the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the Persian Gulf.

Gen. Ahmad Reza Pourdastan, the army’s chief commander of ground forces, is quoted by Iranian state media Saturday as calling the unmanned aircraft “a mobile bomb.” The drone, named Yasir according to one Iranian newspaper, has been designed to plunge into aerial and ground targets, as well as ships.  http://www.cbsnews.com/news/iran-deploys-suicide-drone/

Months ago, Iran called its drone project a nightmare for America:

Iran has unveiled its own copy of an American stealth drone it captured in late 2011, claiming to have cracked the “secrets” of the bat-wing craft and added weapons capabilities…

Fars News Agency reported that while Iran’s duplicate of the US RQ-170 Sentinel drone was smaller, it also had a “bombing capability to attack the US warships in any possible battle.” The story in Persian was headlined: “America’s nightmare has become reality.”

State television showed footage on Sunday it said was of a US aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf filmed by an Iranian drone. The drone replica was unveiled at an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) exhibition on Sunday, where Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was briefed on how the drone, its systems, and structure had been reverse-engineered. He called it a “sweet day.” http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Middle-East/2014/0512/A-nightmare-becoming-reality-Iran-unveils-American-drone-replica?cmpid=editorpicks&google_editors_picks=true

Iran has made many threats in the past towards both Israel and the USA. It is now getting closer to being able to carry its threats out. (Thiel B. Iran deploys ‘suicide drone’: a threat to USA and Israel? COGwriter, December 28, 2014)

While Voice of America claimed in the first news item in this post that Iran has denied supplying drones to Russia for use in Ukraine, Israel365 News suggests that Iran is boasting that it has done so:

October 21, 2022

The West formerly paid little attention to Tehran’s missile and drone technologies but now concedes that they are very dangerous and complains about Iran giving them to “so-and-so,” Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said in a statement broadcasted on Wednesday.

According to the video reported by MEMRI, Khamenei’s remarks broadcasted by Iranian Channel 1 could be a reference to recent accusations that Russia is using Iranian-made “suicide drones” in Ukraine. … Khamenei further stated that the drones represent Iran’s pride. https://www.israel365news.com/275866/irans-supreme-leader-the-west-now-fears-our-drones-and-missiles/

Speaking of Israel365 News, last year it suggested that Israel had bombed an Iranian drone factory (see I365: Did Israel just sabotage an Iranian drone factory?). However, if that happened, it did not stop Iran as the following tweet suggests Iran has serious drone capabilities:

I have long believed that Iran is a threat that will one day be ‘neutralized’ (Jeremiah 49:34-38), as I believe it will overplay its hand. Its confidence in its drones and other military technologies will likely get it to take destructive actions that will result in severe retaliation.

As far as Iran itself goes, while it wants to lead all of Islam, it will fail in that objective — the Bible points to an Arabic power doing that in Daniel 11:40-43. Because of that, I have long felt that it may be that Iran would be ‘neutralized’ before the final King of the South (Daniel 11:40) rises up.

Iran could be neutralized by internal unrest or other matters–and there is unrest in Iran. On the other hand, if it employs, or attempts to employ, certain weapons of mass destruction in certain locals, it may well cause Israel, the USA, and/or others to turn on it and destroy aspects of its military capability. Such a deployment by Iran looks to be consistent with the following biblical prophecy:

5 For it is a day of trouble and treading down and perplexity By the Lord God of hosts In the Valley of Vision — Breaking down the walls And of crying to the mountain. 6 Elam bore the quiver With chariots of men and horsemen, And Kir uncovered the shield. 7 It shall come to pass that your choicest valleys Shall be full of chariots,And the horsemen shall set themselves in array at the gate.8 He removed the protection of Judah. You looked in that day to the armor of the House of the Forest; 9 You also saw the damage to the city of David, That it was great; And you gathered together the waters of the lower pool. 10 You numbered the houses of Jerusalem, And the houses you broke down To fortify the wall. (Isaiah 22:51-9)

Elam is a reference to at least some in Iran. Kir is a reference to at least some in Syria as well as perhaps some who refer to themselves as Palestinian. The Bible tells that after Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria took over Damascus, he moved Syrians to Kir. While this does not mean that Kir must (or must only) be a reference to Syria, the fact that Syria is an ally of Iran is interesting. Some believe Kir is an area in the south of Iran, while others suggest closer to the Black Sea. The Bible tells of a time when Kir will be destroyed (Isaiah 15:1b) and also says that Syria’s capital Damascus will be destroyed (Isaiah 17:1). This destruction might happen around the time Jerusalem experiences massive damage.

In Isaiah 22: 8, “Judah” is a reference to those in the land commonly called Israel–God will allow Israel to be attacked! In Isaiah 22:9, consider that “the damage to the city of David” is a reference to at least part of Jerusalem (cf. 2 Kings 9:28)–and notice that the damage will be great.

Israel’s famed ‘Iron Dome’ will NOT stop the coming great damage that will hit Jerusalem, despite Israeli confidence. Perhaps Syria will be involved to somehow reduce its effectiveness when it “uncovered the shield.”

If so, Israel will not like that and would be expected to retaliate.

Syria’s capital Damascus has been called the oldest, continually-inhabited city on the earth (though another place also claims that position). It’s destruction is prophesied:

1 The burden against Damascus.

“Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city,
And it will be a ruinous heap.
2 The cities of Aroer are forsaken;
They will be for flocks
Which lie down, and no one will make them afraid.
3 The fortress also will cease from Ephraim,
The kingdom from Damascus,
And the remnant of Syria;
They will be as the glory of the children of Israel,”
Says the Lord of hosts.

4 “In that day it shall come to pass
That the glory of Jacob will wane,
And the fatness of his flesh grow lean. (Isaiah 17:1-4)

This looks to take place near, and possibly before, the start of the “time of Jacob’s trouble” (Jeremiah 30:7), also known as the Great Tribulation (Matthew 24:21-22). Things will change in Syria as more destruction will hit it in the future.

Now as Isaiah 22 shows, Israel could very well be damaged by Iran before the the Great Tribulation begins. Iranian drones may well be a factor.

As far as Iran and Israel go, last month, the Continuing Church of God (CCOG) put together the following Bible News Prophecy video on our Bible News Prophecy YouTube channel, the audio portion of which was sent for broadcast on the European Gospel Radio station AM 1323 kHz:

15:03

Iran and Israel Conflict

European Union foreign policy chief, Josep Borrel, has been brokering the nuclear negotiations involving Iran and said that he thinks the deal is “in danger.” Iran blames the United States, whereas the USA says they are not delaying it. Israeli sources stated that Israel will stop Iran from getting a nuclear bomb. Joe Biden says the USA would use its own military power to prevent Iran from getting such a bomb if need be. In 2021, Iranian lawmakers have submitted a bill seeking the government by law to commit to Israel’s destruction by the year 2040. Does the 22nd chapter of Isaiah point to damage coming to Israel from Iran and possibly Syria? Might Iran be concerned enough about limited progress with the USA to launch some type of attack? Is Iran the prophesied ‘King of the South’? Is it reasonable to think that the prophesied peace deal of Daniel 9:27 will not happen until after a military conflict. like a regional war? Should Christians watch the Middle East? Dr. Thiel and Steve Dupuie discuss these matters.

Here is a link to our video: Iran and Israel Conflict.

As far as various prophecies go, let me also state that it may take a major regional war for the coming temporal ‘peace deal’ of Daniel 9:27 to be ratified. Iran, Syria, and Israel may one day be in a major regional war in the future. The USA could also be affected.

We are in the time Jesus referred to as “the beginning of sorrows,” it appears that two or three of the four horseman of the Apocalypse have begun their rides.

In addition to “rumors of war,” we should expect more wars as Jesus warned in Matthew 24:6.

We truly are getting closer to the end.

Pray for God’s Kingdom to come (Matthew 6:10).
