Iranian leaders are watching events and threatening war if the West acts against Syria:

An Iranian order intercepted by the United States instructs Shiite militia groups in Iraq to attack the American Embassy in Baghdad should the U.S. strike Syria…The intercepted message reportedly came from the head of Iran’s Qods Force, a paramilitary arm of the country’s Revolutionary Guards. The order directs militias to prepare to respond with force should the U.S. attack the Bashar Assad regime, Iran’s ally.

The Associated Press also reported Friday that Iranian-backed Shiite militias are threatening retaliation inside Iraq, citing Iraqi security officials and Shiite militants.

Iraqi officials say they are taking the warnings seriously…

Cleric Wathiq al-Batat, who leads the Mukhtar Army, a shadowy Iranian-backed militia, said his forces are preparing for a strong reaction against the interests of the U.S. and other countries that take part in any Syria strike. He claimed that militants have selected hundreds of potential targets, which could include both official American sites and companies “associated with the Americans.”

“There is a good level of coordination with Iran on this issue and I cannot reveal more. But I can say that there will be a strong response,” he told The Associated Press. “Each armed group will have duties to carry out.”

Asaib Ahl al-Haq, an Iranian-backed hard-line faction that also carried out deadly attacks against U.S. troops before their withdrawal, said in a statement this week that action against Syria “will set the region on fire. The interests of the Western countries will not be saved from this fire.”

A senior Asaib Ahl al-Haq official said multiple armed groups within Iraq are “fully prepared to respond to any strike on Syria by attacking the interests of the countries that participate in this strike, including the United States,” although he declined to specify any potential targets.  http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57601752/report-iran-message-orders-iraqi-militias-to-retaliate-if-u.s-strikes-syria/

U.S. officials have intercepted intelligence indicating Iran recently urged militants to strike the U.S. embassy in Baghdad — raising the possibility that the country is looking to orchestrate revenge attacks if the United States launches missiles at its ally Syria…

A senior military source told Fox News that there is indeed such an intelligence intercept, but the intelligence has not been completely vetted.

Still, a separate senior U.S. official said it’s quite common for Iran to be giving orders to hit the embassy in Baghdad. When rockets hit the compound, the orders are often traced back to elements in Iran. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/09/06/iran-plots-revenge-us-says/#ixzz2e8mvZf71

Iraq still has problems and may well end up with a civil war that may split it into two or more pieces.  USA military involvement has not solved the problems over there (though it did remove Saddam Hussein).

A week or so ago, Iran said it would burn Israel to the ground if the USA bombed Syria (Iran threatens to burn down Israel if USA attacks Syria).  The fact that it apparently was willing to take on USA interests possibly more directly in Iraq suggests that it still hopes to have significant military and/or terroristic influence in the region.

Since Iran is not the final King of the South of Bible prophecy (it is basically straight East, not South, of Jerusalem) yet is a significant military power among the Islamic nations, I have long felt that it will have to have its influence somewhat ‘neutralized.’ This is likely to come from a regional war and/or civil uprising.

Though many in the West seem to want to believe that Iran’s new leadership will be peace-oriented, its new President Hassan Rouhani, credits this Imam Mahdi for his election (see Iran’s President-elect wants to negotiate with the USA and credits the ‘Islamic messiah’ for his election).  And the Islamic prophecies (especially the Shi’ite-related ones) point to war as being connected to the Imam Mahdi as far as non-Muslim go.

Elsewhere, Russia’s President Putin has pledged strong support of Syria’s President Assad:

Syria: Russia will stand by Assad over any US strikes, warns Putin

Things aren’t exactly warming up between the Obama administration and Vladimir Putin, even as President Obama arrived in St. Petersburg for the G-20 summit.

Putin called Obama Secretary of State John Kerry a liar over Kerry’s testimony this week before Congress.

The question may be al-Qaeda’s influence on the Syrian rebels, an issue Kerry has downplayed.  http://www.usatoday.com/story/theoval/2013/09/05/obama-kerry-putin-syria-russia-g-20/2769683/

The situation in the Middle East is tense and will change.  Iran’s influence will eventually be reduced, Damascus destroyed (Isaiah 17:1), and Syria will support a confederation of Arabic and Turkish nations (Daniel 11:40-43).

Some items of possibly related interest may include:

The Arab World In the Bible, History, and Prophecy The Bible discusses the origins of the Arab world and discusses the Middle East in prophecy. What is ahead for the Middle East and those who follow Islam? What does Islam teach about the Imam Mahdi?
Is the Future King of the South Rising Up? Some no longer believe there needs to be a future King of the South. Might Egypt, Islam, Iran, Arabs, or Ethiopia be involved? Might this King be called the Mahdi or Caliph? What does the Bible say?
The Future King of the South is Rising Does the Bible teach that there will be a future King of the South in Daniel 11? Is this kingdom rising up now? Did the old Worldwide Church of God (WCG) teach that there would be another one? And who is the King of the South? How will this involve Egypt? Is the final King of the South some type of Arab-Muslim confederation? Can Iran be involved? Is there a group that seems to be supporting the goals of the King of the South? Has the Obama Administration supported the rise of this power? This is a YouTube video.
The Muslim Brotherhood and the Rise of the King of the South The Bible tells of the formation of a power of nations that are in the Middle East and North Africa that are part of the final “King of the South” (Daniel 11:40-43) The Muslim Brotherhood wishes to have an Islamic empire with basically the same nations. This YouTube video explains what to expect from such a confederation.
Damascus and Syria in Prophecy Will Bashar Assad hold power as he has it? Does the Bible show that Damascus, the capital of Syria, will be destroyed? What will happen to Syria? Will the Syrians support the final King of the South that the Bible tells will rise up? Which scriptures discuss the rise and fall of an Arabic confederation? Does Islamic prophecy predict the destruction of Syria. This is a YouTube video.
Russia: Its Origins and Prophesied Future Where do the Russians come from? What about those in the Ukraine? What is prophesied for Russia and its allies? What will they do to the Europeans that supported the Beast in the end?
Is Russia the King of the North?
Some claim it is. But what does the Bible teach? Here is a link to a video, also titled Is Russia the King of the North?
The Eurasian Union, the Kings of the East, and Bible Prophecy
Is there a Eurasian union that will be formed? Is one being formed right now? Are any leaders working on that in the 21st century? Does the Bible teach that there will be a Eurasian union? If some type of Eurasian union is formed, who might it benefit and who will it destroy? A related video would be Is The Eurasian Union Rising?
