The first of apparently two planned debates between Republican US President Donald Trump and his Democratic challenger, former Vice-President Joe Biden was considered chaotic by the left, the right, US media, and European media. Here are some reports:

Trump, Biden Clash in Chaotic, Contentious Debate

WASHINGTON – Republican U.S. President Donald Trump and his Democratic challenger, former Vice President Joe Biden, clashed in a contentious, chaotic presidential election debate Tuesday night, trying for 90 minutes to convince American voters that the other one was unfit to lead the United States for the next four years. …

Name-calling, personal attacks

Mostly they insulted each other with cutting barbs, name-calling and personal attacks.

“He’s the worst president America has ever had,” Biden contended as he and Trump stood at podiums on a debate stage at a university in the Midwestern city of Cleveland, Ohio.

Several times, Biden called Trump “a clown.”

Trump, seeking a second four-year term after his upset 2016 victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton, retorted to Biden, “I’ve done more things in 47 months [as president] than you’ve done in 47 years” as a U.S. senator and vice president under former President Barack Obama.

Trump argued that if Biden takes over as president next January, “you will have a depression like no one has ever seen” because of the Democrat’s plan to raise taxes on corporate earnings from 21% to 28% and on individuals who make more than $400,000 a year. https://www.voanews.com/2020-usa-votes/trump-biden-clash-chaotic-contentious-debate

Presidential debate: Trump and Biden trade insults in chaotic debate

President Donald Trump and his challenger Joe Biden have fiercely clashed in one of the most chaotic and bitter White House debates in years.

Mr Trump frequently interrupted, prompting Mr Biden to tell him to “shut up” as the two fought over the pandemic, healthcare and the economy. …

Overall, the 90-minute debate in Cleveland, Ohio, was light on serious policy discussion. …

“Will you shut up, man?” the Democratic candidate snapped at Mr Trump, later adding: “Keep yapping, man.”

Mr Trump, the Republican candidate seeking a second term, responded: “The people understand, Joe. Forty-seven years [in politics], you’ve done nothing. They understand.” https://www.bbc.com/news/election-us-2020-54350538

Donald Trump and Joe Biden clash in chaotic first debate

30 September 2020

The debate saw heated clashes between President Donald Trump and his Democrat challenger Joe Biden. The two sparred over healthcare and the COVID-19 pandemic — trading personal jabs as well.

With just weeks to go until the November 3 election, Donald Trump and Joe Biden went head-to-head in a debate that sought to energize supporters and win over undecided voters. Interruptions, tense exchanges and insults dominated the debate, with moderator Chris Wallace struggling to get a word in.

This first debate mainly focused on US domestic issues, with the COVID-19 pandemic, a Supreme Court vacancy, the economy, and racial justice topping the agenda. https://www.dw.com/en/donald-trump-and-joe-biden-clash-in-chaotic-first-debate/a-55098690

The Germans (the final report above) are not pleased that international issues were not considered important enough to be a major part of the debates. The world did not see a polite example last night of two statesmen discussing policy.

Presidential debate: How the world’s media reacted

30 September 2020

Newspapers and commentators around the world have criticised the tone and tactics of the debate.

As The Times in the UK wrote, “The clearest loser from the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden was America.”

UK

The paper went further, saying the event “was not a debate in any meaningful sense” but rather “an ill-tempered and at times incomprehensible squabble between two angry septuagenarians who palpably loathe each other”.

The Guardian described it as a “national humiliation”. …

France

“Chaotic, childish, gruelling” – that’s how French newspaper Libération described Tuesday’s debate. Le Monde agreed, calling it a “terrible storm”, and saying that the president had sought to “push his opponent off his hinges” with constant interruptions and by mocking his answers. …

Germany

Der Spiegel’s analysis of the debate is headlined “A TV duel like a car accident”.

In a piece titled “Part fist-fight, part play”, Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote: “Both Trump and Biden could go home satisfied because as far as the theatrical performance is concerned, both did their job properly. Donald Trump played Donald Trump, Joe Biden played Joe Biden, and fans should have liked it.” …

Italy

“Never had American politics sunk so low,” La Repubblica’s US correspondent wrote, describing the debate as “Chaotic, rowdy, and based on mutual contempt”. …

Russia

One broadcaster described it as a “one and a half-hour exchange of insults”, while another said there was “no constructive dialogue”. …

India

Hindi-language news channel AajTak accused both candidates of “mud-slinging”, while broadcaster Times Now said the debate was “marred with personal jibes and political barbs”.

But the strongest commentary came from The Times of India, the country’s largest-selling English-language newspaper, which compared the debate to “mud-wrestling”.

“The US embarrassed itself before the world for 100 minutes,” it wrote. https://www.bbc.com/news/election-us-2020-54354405

The world press was not impressed with the US presidential debate.

For a very long time, the USA has considered itself an example to the rest of the world.

Notice something that Jesus said:

14 You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. (Matthew 5:14)

Notice how that has been interpreted related to the land dominated by the USA:

A City upon a Hill” is a phrase derived from the parable of Salt and Light in Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount. In a modern context, it is used in United States politics to refer to America acting as a “beacon of hope” for the world.  …

John Winthrop (Wikipedia)

This scripture {Matthew 5:14} was cited at the end of Puritan John Winthrop’s lecture or treatise, “A Model of Christian Charity” delivered on March 21, 1630 at Holyrood Church in Southampton before his first group of Massachusetts Bay colonists embarked on the ship Arbella to settle Boston. Winthrop warned his fellow Puritans that their new community would be “as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us”, meaning, if the Puritans failed to uphold their covenant with God, then their sins and errors would be exposed for all the world to see: “So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken and so cause him to withdraw his present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword through the world”. Winthrop’s lecture was forgotten for nearly two hundred years until the Massachusetts Historical Society published it in 1838. It remained an obscure reference for more than another century until Cold War era historians and political leaders made it relevant to their time, crediting Winthrop’s text as the foundational document of the idea of American exceptionalism.

On 9 January 1961, President-Elect John F. Kennedy quoted the phrase during an address delivered to the General Court of Massachusetts …

On November 3, 1980, Ronald Reagan referred to the same event and image in his Election Eve Address “A Vision for America” … and in his January 11, 1989, farewell speech to the nation …

U.S. Senator Barack Obama also made reference to the topic in his commencement address on June 2, 2006 at the University of Massachusetts Boston (City upon a Hill. Wikipedia, accessed 05/02/20)

As far as exceptionalism goes and being a model, last night’s debate was another example of the US not being an example to emulate. Earlier this year, we put up the following video on our Bible News Prophecy channel:

15:19

COVID-19: The End of American Exceptionalism?

Could government actions related to COVID-19 be showing the end of American exceptionalism? The USA used to at least give lip service to its the Bill of Rights in its Constitution. But now, not so much. What do the first, fourth, and fourteenth amendments to the US Constitution supposedly guarantee? Tucker Carlson stated, “For 250 years, Americans have enjoyed the unfettered right to practice their faith as they choose. Now they don’t. … Now that we’ve ceded all authority in the country to our political leaders, what can’t they do? What are the limits to their power?” What about John Winthrop’s “A Model of Christian Charity” sermon delivered on March 21, 1630 where he quoted Jesus’ statement in Matthew 5:14 in the Sermon on the Mount about being the City upon a Hill? About being an example? This has been referred to by at least three who became President of the United States, including John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and Barack Obama. Why, instead, did the World Health Organization’s Dr. Mike Ryan (the WHO’s top emergencies expert) point to Sweden as being an example for the world? Will a coming man of sin, son of perdition want himself and his government worshiped above all others? Will this pandemic shatter the perception of American exceptionalism? Will this end in 666? Dr. Thiel covers these matters and more.

As far as the debate last night, notice also the following report:

September 30, 2020

The short version of the debate is that Biden did well if one ignored that almost every other statement he made was a lie or fantasy; Trump dominated him, almost too aggressively; and Chris Wallace may have been the worst and most obviously biased moderator since Candy Crowley.  Most significantly, though, Biden and Trump each made a critical point.  Biden’s was a tacit admission that if he is elected president, he will preside over the end of the filibuster, allowing Democrats to pack the courts and add two new Democrat-majority states.  Trump’s point was that he’s holding … evidence about the Democrats’ coup attempt. …

Chris Wallace, in one of the few tough questions he posed to Biden, said this:

So my question to you is, you have refused in the past to talk about it, are you willing to tell the American tonight whether or not you will support either ending the filibuster or packing the court?

Biden refused to answer, something the Trump quickly challenged.  Here’s the colloquy:

BIDEN: Whatever position I take on that, that’ll become the issue. The issue is the American people should speak. You should go out and vote. You’re voting now. Vote and let your Senators know strongly how you feel.T

RUMP: Are you going to pack the court?

BIDEN: Vote now.

TRUMP: Are you going to pack the court?

BIDEN: Make sure you, in fact, let people know, your Senators.

TRUMP: He doesn’t want to answer the question.

BIDEN: I’m not going to answer the question.

TRUMP: Why wouldn’t you answer that question? You want to put a lot of new Supreme Court Justices. Radical left.

BIDEN: Will you shut up, man?

TRUMP: Listen, who is on your list, Joe? Who’s on your list?

WALLACE: Gentlemen, I think we’ve ended this —

BIDEN: This is so un-Presidential.

TRUMP: He’s going to pack the court. He is not going to give a list.

You can see that Biden made a nonsense statement to avoid answering whether he will preserve the filibuster and the Supreme Court’s current system of nine justices.  Shamefully, Wallace let him get away with not answering.  Wallace surely understands that Biden’s handlers plan to end the filibuster so they can pack the court and add D.C. and Puerto Rico as states.

Packing the court ends the American experiment as we know it. https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2020/09/two_crucial_things_emerged_from_the_first_presidential_debate.html

Because Joe Biden did not appear feeble and fumbling, the debate may have helped him politically more than the debate boosting Donald Trump. But how many voters will be motivated by the debate is questionable.

10:25

The USA presidential campaign is in full swing. Though Democratic party candidate Joe Biden and Republican party candidate Donald Trump have differing economic and climate policies as well as different views on abortion and racial matters, there are many similarities both share. Do they have policies that they share that are leading to the destruction of the USA? What do Bible prophecies reveal about sexual immorality, debt, and hypocrisy? What are some of the national sins of the USA? Does the Bible endorse voting? What did Jesus teach related to what to seek and pray for? What does the New Testament teach that Christians are to do related to leaders? Is the lesser of two evils still evil? Dr. Thiel goes over these matters, including going over eleven similarities the two major party candidates share and some of what the Bible teaches about evil.
