Trump’s ‘State of the Union’ raised trade war concerns
US President Donald Trump’s brief trade comments in his State of the Union address have raised trade war concerns:

“The era of economic surrender is over,” declared US President Donald Trump in his first state-of-the-union address in Washington. “From now on, we expect trading relationships to be fair and to be reciprocal,” he warned.
Trump underscored his administration’s commitment to “fix bad trade deals” and to start to negotiate new ones, which will “protect American workers and American intellectual property, through strong enforcement of our trade rules”.
In few sentences, the tough-talking American leader effectively declared a trade war against the world, particularly export-oriented nations in Asia. This is nothing short of a misguided, self-defeating measure, which will only accelerate America’s structural decline as the world’s waning superpower.

Before going further, let me state there are many issues of “unfair” trade, massive tariffs would affect not only countries that Donald Trump feels are “unfair,” but will also raise costs to Americans. It can be debated if the costs are worth the jobs that would be affected.
Now, various others did not see last night’s State of the Union as sparking a trade war (e.g. 01/31/2018: Trump didn’t stoke China trade war, but jitters remain in Asia). Yet, many in Asia and Europe are concerned.
As far as Europe goes, notice the following threat made to the USA prior to the State of the Union speech–perhaps so it would not be mentioned in the speech:
Brussels has warned that it stands ready to retaliate and potentially open up a transatlantic trade war if the US delivers on apparent threats to restrict European imports.
The US president, Donald Trump, claimed in an interview with ITV broadcast on Sunday that the EU had been “very unfair” on American exporters, and that it would “morph into something very big” that would “turn out to be very much to [the EU’s] detriment”. …
Responding to Trump’s comments, a spokesman for the European commission told reporters in Brussels that the EU was ready to hit back if its importers were made to suffer.
The spokesman said: “For us trade policy is not a zero sum game. It is not about winners and losers. We here in the European Union believe that trade can and should be win-win.
“We also believe that while trade has to be open and fair it also has to be rules-based. China, Mexico and Europe have had trade concerns about the USA because of Donald Trump. If massive tariffs are imposed, this will further drive them closer together. Donald Trump’s executive order last year (see After Trump’s executive order, TPP-related nations start to look to China) against the Tran-Pacific Partnership agreement has already seemed to have helped both China and Europe increase their trade influence in Asia and elsewhere. Mexico has also tried to reach out to Europe because of Donald Trump (watch Donald Trump and Mexico’s future).
The talk of trade wars is something I have warned about on this page for years. Notice something I posted back in 2008:
Negotiations will continue and some type of loose agreements will happen. In the spirit of accommodation and personal interest, many of the “standards” of the European Union will be adopted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, as well as by nearly all of the countries of the world. The Arab nations will most likely agree with many of the standards as they seem to be destined to form a brief end-time alliance with the Europeans (The Arab World In the Bible, History, and Prophecy).
However, over time, it will become increasingly clear that the British will be in more agreement with the Canadians and Americans and that the European Union in more agreement with the Mexicans than the EU will have with the English-speaking nations.
Trade wars and/or serious trade disputes will most likely arise.
The Brits will ultimately decide that they are more supportive of the Americans and Canadians. They will be so much more supportive that they will end up in a trading agreement with them (with the Australians and New Zealanders probably also becoming part of that agreement).
The EU will decide that Mexico and the rest of Latin America are in more agreement with it and thus make some type of serious trading agreement with most (or all) of Latin America. The Vatican will also have influence here as Latin America is highly Roman Catholic.
The Europeans and Americans, however, will continue to have military agreements, though many will be tense about them. (Thiel B. A Combined EU & North American Trade Block Coming? COGwriter.com, March 3, 2008)
The fact of Brexit and the EU’s response to it have been pushing the Brits to conclude that they need to move closer to the USA, and farther from Europe, on trade. Last year, Germany’s Angela Merkel met with leaders from Mexico and Argentina on trade matters–partially because of concerns related to Donald Trump’s trade statements (see Germany’s Merkel is in Argentina making deals with Mexico and Argentina).
The cover of the January-March 2018 edition of Bible News Prophecy magazine has the term “Trade Wars’ emblazoned on it to go with an article inside of it–we also put together a YouTube video titled Trade Wars: Are COG warnings coming to pass?
Trade disputes are likely to be a factor that will lead to World War III. The Bible tells of a powerful trade empire arising in the last days in Europe, called “Babylon the Great” (Revelation 18). It has long been my view that problems with trade and/or trade agreements will be a factor that will further turn Europe against the USA, and be a factor in the start of WWIII (see also WTO Trade Deal and the Rise of the European Beast Power).
Consider also that back in 1971, the late WCG Pastor General, Herbert W. Armstrong, wrote:
Trade War Looming to Trigger World War III?
Either we start raising high tariff barriers against other countries, starting a TRADE WAR which in time will trigger the nuclear war that will DESTROY US – or, American workers are going to have to MEET the competition of the workers in other countries , by lowering living standards. Obviously American workers are not going to choose to do the latter. And if they don’t – well, THE HANDWRITING IS ON OUR NATIONAL WALL. (Armstrong HW. Trade War Looming to Trigger World War III? And while his basic impression of timing was off, it is correct that trade issues will be a factor that will trigger WWIII. A war that will be against the USA, Canada, and UK and led by a power that will reorganize (Revelation 17:12-13) and then rise in Europe. A Europe that is angry at the UK for Brexit and one that is mad at the USA for a host of reasons (including decisions of its former President Obama and statements by its current President Donald Trump).
There is a cost to trade wars and tariffs. Those who think otherwise are fooling themselves.
We are seeing more in the world that want to turn further away from the USA.
Massive shifts in trade are beginning to take place.
A real war, and not just a trade war, between Europe and the USA (with the UK basically on the USA’s side) will come as one day Europe will take steps to ‘eliminate the competition’ so to speak (cf. Daniel 8:25; 11:39; USA in Prophecy: The Strongest Fortresses). Trade issues appear likely to be a factor that will trigger WWIII.
Before closing, I would like to comment about ‘The State of the Union.’ According to CBS, 75% of Americans approved of the speech:

Yet, having seen how members of Congress responded to it, both during it and after it, it is clear that the USA is getting more deeply divided.
Consider the following from Jesus related to what has been happening in the USA:
25 Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. (Matthew 12:25)
17 Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and a house divided against a house falls. (Luke 11:17)
Former US President Abraham Lincoln cited one of these scriptures in a famous speech he gave prior to becoming USA president. The situation worsened and the American civil war began not too long afterwards.
Increasingly, the political parties are becoming more polarized. The Republican politicians praised Donald Trump at the same time Democrats roundly condemned him. While politicians have always been partisan, there is less both parties seem willing to do for the ‘good of the country’ together.
This will not end well for the USA. Let me also add that neither Donald Trump, Joe Kennedy, or other politicians I saw on the news last night called out USA sins nor the need for repentance or the Kingdom of God. Basically, they all acted like everything is fine, only that the other political party and some other factors were really the problem.
That reminded me of something that the Apostle Paul wrote:
7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. (2 Timothy 3:7)
And, I question how much the politicians have really learned as they overlook the source of truth (e.g. John 17:17; see also CCOG and What is Truth?).
Despite what American politicians state, the world, under European influence, will turn against the USA (cf. Daniel 11:39; see also USA in Prophecy: The Strongest Fortresses).
Trade issues will be a factor.
