Holocaust Memorial and Lutheran ‘New Agreement’ NT Version Fails to Mention the Word ‘Israel’

Protests against BDS (Philafrenzy)

There was a memorial for WWII Holocaust victims today in Israel:

April 21, 2020

On Tuesday, health professionals throughout Israel took a minute to stand during the annual siren commemorating those who have lost their lives in the Holocaust. https://www.breakingisraelnews.com/148936/israeli-medical-staff-fighting-covid-19-nationwide-take-a-break-to-commemorate-holocaust-memorial-day/

Consider the following prophecy:

4 They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, That the name of Israel may be remembered no more. (Psalm 83:4)

Why bring that up since there was a remembrance today?

Well, while that prophecy is for the future, it came to mind after reading the following:

Lutherans Publish New Version of Bible Without the Word ‘Israel’ in It

A recently published translation of the New Testament has one glaring omission: it has excised all references to the place and the people of the Bible.

24NYT, a Danish news service, reported on Sunday that the Danish Bible Society just published a revised translation of the New Testament. The new edition has many surprises, including a new name: the New Agreement. But even more shocking is that the “New Agreement has all but removed any references to Israel, whether it describes the land or the people. …

It should be noted that the Danish Bible Society is run by the Evangelical Lutheran Church, a strong proponent of supersessionism. In 2018, Robert O. Smith, a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and a stalwart in the World Council of Churches and the Lutheran World Federation, addressed a conference at St. Olaf Institute for Freedom and Community. Smith was seated before a Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) banner and made these declarations: “The ancient Israelites are not linked in any substantive or material way to the contemporary, modern state of Israel. . . . The biblical narrative of Israel has almost nothing to do with contemporary Israel other than the intentional manipulation of sacred texts to justify a political project.”

At the same conference, Palestinian Lutheran pastor, administrator, and theologian Mitri Raheb stated, that “it wasn’t the Lord God who promised Israel the land; it was the Lord Balfour.” …

It should be noted that the term “Israel” is used a total of 73 times in the New Testament, (Berkowitz AE. Lutherans Publish New Version of Bible Without the Word ‘Israel’ in It. Breaking Israel News, April 20, 2020 https://www.breakingisraelnews.com/148885/lutherans-publish-new-version-of-bible-without-the-word-israel-in-it/)

Note: The NKJV has the word “Israel” in the New Testament for a total of 75 times in 73 verses.

Also, note, Lutheran pastor’s claim to the contrary, that yes, God promised land to Israel:

24 And Joseph said to his brethren, “I am dying; but God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land to the land of which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” 25 Then Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.” (Genesis 50:24-25)

Furthermore consider that at least a portion of the Lutherans, perhaps to appease the BDS, do not want the name Israel in the New Testament–despite what the New Testament itself states.

Obviously, they seem to think that sola Scriptura means that they can change scripture!

As far as the Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) goes, notice the following

What is BDS?

BDS stands for the movement to boycott, divest from and sanction Israel. The movement takes much of its inspiration and rhetoric from the successful boycotts of the 1980’s and early 1990’s that forced the South African government to abandon its system of racial apartheid. This is why the BDS movement tries so hard – despite so many facts to the contrary – to draw a parallel between Israel and South Africa.

BDS leaders also try very hard to portray themselves as peace activists who are using non-violent means to force Israel to withdraw from the West Bank and make way for a Palestinian State.

But a visit to the BDS website (www.BDSmovement.net) quickly reveals that BDS has far a more radical goal: eliminating Israel as a Jewish state. This is not an exaggeration. This is something BDS leaders readily admit.1

Israel’s conflict with her Arab neighbors is complex. The Israeli people themselves are deeply divided on the best path forward. There is room for disagreement and debate on many of the issues at the core of this conflict.

The problem with the BDS movement is not that it criticizes Israel. The problem with the BDS movement is that it criticizes only Israel. BDS insists on blaming the entire conflict on only one side – Israel. Such simplistic scapegoating won’t bring peace; it will only fuel extremism. https://www.maccabeetaskforce.org/bds-qa/?gclid=Cj0KCQjws_r0BRCwARIsAMxfDRjbVcButLiYdhGR9Y24XIKUXhFc6s-yxKjUyPdS3yz7CevXSDyixrYaAo-gEALw_wcB accessed 04/21/20

Now, what about Lutherans?

Well, they take their name from the Protestant Martin Luther. Notice something that Martin Luther wrote about the Jews:

I had made up my mind to write no more either about the Jews or against them. But since I learned that those miserable and accursed people do not cease to lure to themselves even us, that is, the Christians, I have published this little book, so that I might be found among those who opposed such poisonous activities of the Jews and who warned the Christians to be on their guard against them … They are so blind and stupid that they see neither the words found in Genesis 17 nor the whole of Scripture, which mightily and explicitly condemns this lie … They are real liars and bloodhounds who have not only continually perverted and falsified all of Scripture with their mendacious glosses from the beginning until the present day. Their heart’s most ardent sighing and yearning and hoping is set on the day on which they can deal with us Gentiles as they did with the Gentiles in Persia at the time of Esther…The worse a Jew is, the more arrogant he is, solely because he is a Jew … David and other pious Jews were not as conceited as the present-day, incorrigible Jews … I wanted to present this to us Germans so that we might see what rascals the blind Jews are and how powerfully the truth of God in our midst stands with us and against them (Medieval Sourcebook: Martin Luther (1483-1546): On the Jews and Their Lies, 1543)

Martin Luther’s advice about Jews was hateful, not Christian. He also wrote:

What shall we Christians do with this rejected and condemned people, the Jews? Since they live among us, we dare not tolerate their conduct … I shall give you my sincere advice:

First to set fire to their synagogues or schools and to bury and cover with dirt whatever will not burn, so that no man will ever again see a stone or cinder of them. This is to be done in honor of our Lord and of Christendom …

Second, I advise that their houses also be razed and destroyed. For they pursue in them the same aims as in their synagogues. Instead they might be lodged under a roof or in a barn, like the gypsies. This will bring home to them that they are not masters in our country, as they boast, but that they are living in exile and in captivity, as they incessantly wail and lament about us before God.

Third, I advise that all their prayer books and Talmudic writings, in which such idolatry, lies, cursing and blasphemy are taught, be taken from them. …

Fourth, I advise that their rabbis be forbidden to teach henceforth on pain of loss of life and limb. …

Fifth, I advise that safe-conduct on the highways be abolished completely for the Jews. For they have no business in the countryside …

Sixth, I advise that usury be prohibited to them, and that all cash and treasure of silver and gold be taken from them and put aside for safekeeping. …

Seventh, I commend putting a flail, an ax, a hoe, a spade, a distaff, or a spindle into the hands of young, strong Jews and Jewesses and letting them earn their bread in the sweat of their brow, as was imposed on the children of Adam (Gen 3[:19]}. (Medieval Sourcebook: Martin Luther (1483-1546): On the Jews and Their Lies, 1543)

…  burn down Jewish schools and synagogues, and to throw pitch and sulphur into the flames; to destroy their homes; to confiscate their ready money in gold and silver; to take from them their sacred books, even the whole Bible; and if that did not help matters, to hunt them of the country like mad dogs (Luther’s Works, vol. Xx, pp. 2230-2632 as quoted in Stoddard JL. Rebuilding a Lost Faith, 1922, p.99).

We in the Continuing Church of God do not condone antisemitism. We teach that Jesus was a Jew (John 4:9) and most in the nation of Israel are of the same ethnic origin as Jesus.

We also strive to reach Jews and Gentiles about Jesus (see also the free book, online at ccog.org, Proof Jesus is the Messiah) and the Father (see also the free book, online at ccog.org, Is God’s Existence Logical?).

Anyway, removing the name “Israel” from the New Testament is wrong thing to do. Martin Luther also tried to change the New Testament (for details, check out the article Sola Scriptura or Prima Luther? What Did Martin Luther Really Believe About the Bible?). Apparently, some Lutherans feel they should change the New Testament also as they do not want the name “Israel” remembered.

However, God has other plans. Here are some quotes of scriptures mentioning Israel in the future from our free booklet The Gospel of the Kingdom of God:

Isaiah confirmed the physical aspect of this phase when he continued with:

11 It shall come to pass in that day That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time To recover the remnant of His people who are left, From Assyria and Egypt, From Pathros and Cush, From Elam and Shinar, From Hamath and the islands of the sea.

12 He will set up a banner for the nations, And will assemble the outcasts of Israel, And gather together the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth. 13 Also the envy of Ephraim shall depart, And the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off; Ephraim shall not envy Judah, And Judah shall not harass Ephraim. 14 But they shall fly down upon the shoulder of the Philistines toward the west; Together they shall plunder the people of the East; They shall lay their hand on Edom and Moab; And the people of Ammon shall obey them. 15 The Lord will utterly destroy the tongue of the Sea of Egypt; With His mighty wind He will shake His fist over the River, And strike it in the seven streams, And make men cross over dry-shod. 16 There will be a highway for the remnant of His people Who will be left from Assyria, As it was for Israel In the day that he came up from the land of Egypt. (Isaiah 11:11-16)

Isaiah was also inspired to write:

2 Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the Lord’s house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it. 3 Many people shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore. … 11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, The haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, And the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. (Isaiah 2:2-4,11)

Thus, it will be a utopian time of peace on earth. Ultimately, this will be forever, with Jesus ruling. Based upon various scriptures (Psalm 90:4; 92:1; Isaiah 2:11; Hosea 6:2), the Jewish Talmud teaches this lasts 1,000 years (Babylonian Talmud: Tractate Sanhedrin Folio 97a). …

It was not just Daniel and Isaiah that God inspired to write about the coming Kingdom of God.

Ezekiel was inspired to write that those of the tribes of Israel (not just the Jews) who were scattered during the time of the Great Tribulation would be gathered together in the millennial kingdom:

17 Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “I will gather you from the peoples, assemble you from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.”’ 18 And they will go there, and they will take away all its detestable things and all its abominations from there. 19 Then I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within them, and take the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh, 20 that they may walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God. 21 But as for those whose hearts follow the desire for their detestable things and their abominations, I will recompense their deeds on their own heads,” says the Lord God. (Ezekiel 11:17-21)

The descendants of the tribes of Israel will no longer be scattered, (Thiel B. The Gospel of the Kingdom of God. Nazarene Books)

Yes, Israel’s name will be remembered, despite attempts by Lutherans and others to eliminate it.
