DW: Hong Kong’s rule of law is at its end

The situation in Hong Kong is continuing to change as mainland China has pushed for more control:

Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Lawmakers Spend Final Day in Office Before Mass Resignations

November 12, 2020

Pro-democracy lawmakers in Hong Kong staged one final act of defiance in the city’s Legislative Council on Thursday before going through with a mass resignation over the dismissal of four of their colleagues.

Lam Cheuk-ting unfurled a banner from a balcony of the chamber denouncing Chief Executive Carrie Lam as the legislature gaveled into session.

Fifteen pro-democracy lawmakers pledged to resign en masse on Wednesday, hours after their four colleagues, Alvin Yeung, Denis Kwok, Kwok Ka-ki and Kenneth Leung, were disqualified by the government. The quartet’s dismissal came after a Chinese legislative committee ruled that Hong Kong’s government could disqualify any lawmaker believed to be a threat to national security without going through the courts.

The disqualifications of the four lawmakers were denounced by the United States and other Western nations. White House national security adviser Robert O’Brien said the move showed Beijing’s communist government has “flagrantly violated its international commitments” and was bent on “expanding one party dictatorship in Hong Kong.”

The dismissals and the subsequent resignations of the other 15 pro-democracy lawmakers will leave the 70-seat Legislative Council with only pro-Beijing lawmakers.

The four disqualified lawmakers were also among 12 legislators barred from running in elections initially scheduled to be held in September. The government has postponed the elections for a year, citing the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The disqualifications appear to be the latest effort by Beijing to quell pro-democracy forces in the semi-autonomous city, which was engulfed by massive and often violent pro-democracy demonstrations in the last half of 2019.

The mainland’s communist government passed a sweeping new security law in June in response to the demonstrations, under which anyone in Hong Kong believed to be carrying out terrorism, separatism, subversion of state power or collusion with foreign forces could be tried and face life in prison if convicted.

Western governments and human rights advocates say the measure effectively ends the self-autonomy guaranteed under the pact that switched control of Hong Kong from Britain to China in 1997. https://www.voanews.com/east-asia-pacific/hong-kong-pro-democracy-lawmakers-spend-final-day-office-mass-resignations

Opinion: Hong Kong’s rule of law is at its end

By throwing out pro-democracy lawmakers, Hong Kong’s Beijing-dominated legislature is quickly losing any veneer of autonomy. A broken legal system has permitted this democratic dysfunction, says DW’s Dang Yuan.

Hong Kong’s tentative hold on democracy is in trouble. …

Hong Kong’s partially democratic parliament is run under the thumb of a “supervisory agency” and dominated by a permanent ruling party supported by Beijing. The territory’s “Basic Law” is now being usurped by an alternative constitution, which provides for one-party rule. Things can only go wrong from here. 11/11/20 https://www.dw.com/en/hong-kong-democracy-rule-of-law/a-55563992

While I would not say that the “rule of law” is at its end, Hong Kong’s independence is on its way out. Hong Kong is being absorbed into China. While that ALWAYS was China’s intention and is consistent with the 1997 deal, it is happening faster than many in Hong Kong felt it was supposed to.

It was only because of a 99 year lease entered into in 1898 with the UK that Hong Kong was separate from China in the 20th century. During the time of that lease, Hong Kong was considered a British colony. But that lease ended. While officially, Hong Kong is supposed to be fairly separate until 2047 because of treaty negotiated between the British and the Chinese, that was not a complete separation. That deal has a security provision which the government of the People’s Republic of China has decided to exercise–but in a manner protesters in Hong Kong did not want. China, because of the protests and other reasons, believes that Hong Kong was moving away from transitioning to be part of it, so it decided that the direction needed to be changed. And it took steps that the protesters and various others in Hong Kong did not like.

I have long warned that the situation in Hong Kong would change.

Consider something I posted here related to Hong Kong protests in 2015:

The protesters have asked for more separation of systems than the Chinese government currently prefers, but ultimately Hong Kong will be even more dominated by China. …

Hong Kong, because of its … its apparent prophetic place, will closer align with China … despite what today’s protesters may prefer. …

China does not want protests and will take steps to get them cleared out if it feels that is its best course of action. (Thiel B. Hong Kong protests continue: What will be the result? COGwriter, February 1, 2015)

And the following was posted here last Summer:

Hong Kong protesters hope to delay China’s influence, but these protests may achieve the opposite effect.

The time will come, relatively soon, when Hong Kong will have much more control from China. (Thiel B. DW: Hong Kong: Chaos ensues as fresh protests kick off. COGwriter, July 28, 2019)

The “new security law” is essentially the opposite effect of what the protesters wanted.

In December 2019, I posted:

So, ‘legally,’ Hong Kong is supposed to be separate until 2047. I believe that its ‘separation’ will end before then–likely within a dozen years from now.

Hong Kong protesters have asked for more separation of systems than the Chinese government currently prefers, but ultimately Hong Kong will be even more dominated by China. (Thiel B. VOA: Hundreds of Thousands of Protesters Pack Hong Kong Streets; COGwriter: But what about prophecy? COGwriter, December 8, 2019)

Yes, as of today, it should be clear that Hong Kong is even more dominated by China.

In July 2020, I posted:

Although many in Hong Kong want to cast off control from China, that is not going to be successful. Even if there are temporary ‘victories.’ … People in Hong Kong need to see “the handwriting on the wall” (Daniel 5). (Thiel B. AP: Hong Kong police make first arrests under new security law. COGwriter, July 1, 2020)

Why did I write what I did?

Well, partially because Bible prophecy tells of a coming military alliance between the powers in Asia which would include China and almost assuredly Taiwan and Hong Kong (Revelation 9:13-18; 16:12-16):

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 15 Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” 16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon (Revelation 16:12-16).

The literal translation of the expression ‘the kings of the east’ in Revelation 16:12 is “the kings of the sunrise” and thus this would seem to have to include places like Taiwan, which is east of mainland China as well as a place where the sunrise happens first. And there was no biblical reason to believe that Hong Kong would remain separate from China.

Expect Hong Kong to become totally controlled by China before Jesus returns and the Kingdom of God is established.

Properly understood biblical prophecies are coming to pass.

And this includes those for places other than China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
