Around 70% of people living in the EU and UK want more independence from the US and believe it’s time for Europe to “go its own way,” a new study compiled by the Germany-based research foundation Bertelsmann Stiftung indicates.
According to the survey, some 73% of respondents across the EU believe that it is time for the continent to drift away from Washington. UK respondents expressed a similar level of desire to free themselves from the clutches of the US, measuring at 67%.
The sentiment has been steadily growing across the bloc over the past few years, measuring some 63% back in 2024, the foundation noted. The level of mistrust towards the US has been growing as well, with only 42% deeming it a trustworthy partner against 46% last year, according to the researcher.
The survey, which was released on Thursday, is based on a sampling opinions of some 18,000 respondents across all 27 EU member states and some 2,000 in the UK. The polls were conducted in March this year among people aged between 18 and 69 years, with the sample meant to reflect current population distributions in terms of age, gender, and population density.
Over the past few years, EU politicians have repeatedly called for gaining more independence from Washington, primarily in terms of foreign policy and security. The European Union has until 4 July to fully implement its trade deal with the United States or face “much higher tariffs”, US President Donald Trump said on Thursday after a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The announcement, which comes amid rising tensions between the EU and the US, postpones a threat made by Trump last Friday when he said tariffs on EU-made cars would be hiked from 15% to 25% sometime this week.
“I’ve been waiting patiently for the EU to fulfill their side of the historic trade deal we agreed in Turnberry, Scotland, the largest trade deal, ever! A promise was made that the EU would deliver their side of the deal and, as per agreement, cut their tariffs to zero!” the US president wrote on social media.
Referring to the US’ independence day, known as the Fourth of July, he said: “I agreed to give her until our country’s 250th Birthday or, unfortunately, their tariffs would immediately jump to much higher levels.”
Under a lopsided deal reached last summer, the EU committed to slashing remaining tariffs on US goods. Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened and insulted the Europeans.

Matle said these governments grew increasingly nervous with Trump’s return to office — “not only because of dependence on the defense industry, but also because of the promise of protection should a confrontation with China arise.”
Her research focuses on how selected European and Indo-Pacific countries view their respective threat situations, what connections and similarities exist, and whether this leads to cooperation. Italy-Germany summit: Meloni and Merz push for an autonomous, competitive Europe

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz signed the new German-Italian Action Plan in Rome, where the two delegations met for the intergovernmental summit in Rome on Friday.
The summit focused on strengthening EU strategic autonomy, boosting industrial competitiveness – particularly the automotive sector – and deepening cooperation on defence, energy and migration.
“We must build an authoritative, competitive Europe with its own strategic autonomy,” said Meloni at a press conference following morning talks at Villa Doria Pamphili, “Italy and Germany have a special responsibility in this phase of history: the EU must choose whether to be the protagonist of its destiny”.

Many European leaders want Europe to change and rise up and pressure from Donald Trump is accelerating that process.
Now, a majority of European residents also look to agree.
Notice that the Bible shows that the time will come when Europe will reorganize and turn power over to a dictator called the beast below:
12 “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. (Revelation 17:12-13)
This will NOT be a democracy.
So let me add that despite its disdain for Donald Trump, Europeans are also seeing that having a leader like him helps cut through bureaucracy and gets world attention.

Because of some of Donald Trump’s statements, back in late 2015, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, former German Defense Minister, called Donald Trump “that blonde lunatic named Donald.”[i] And even though he did not like Donald Trump’s reelection in 2024, he said it was good news in that it was a final wake up call for Europe to improve its own security and take other steps to protect itself because of his policies and possible actions.[ii]
Furthermore, at a conference in 2025, Herr Guttenberg referred to “bully Trump” and said Europe needed to be achieve an independent military defense so that it no longer needs to dependent on the USA.[iii] An unintended consequence of Donald Trump’s presidency may be the rise of Barron Guttenberg.
Europe will go in a direction that USA leaders, including its ‘foreign policy experts,’ do not comprehend (Daniel 11:39; Isaiah 10:5-11).
When my wife and I were in Europe in late 2016, many of the Europeans we spoke to were essentially of the view that the USA is supposed to be the leader of the West, so how could it possibly elect Donald Trump? We were told this by Europeans from countries like Switzerland, Spain, and the Netherlands. European disdain for Donald Trump and how they perceive his leading of the USA is real. …
Some in Europe have long wanted to be independent of the USA. …
Many in the USA do not seem to realize that once Europeans are spending more for their militaries, they will also expect to have more independence from the USA as to how military might will be used. …
While Donald Trump seems to believe that his policies are best for the United States, notice some unintended consequences of them: …
- Pushing against Europe’s unity is encouraging the Europeans, which are prophesied to have unity difficulties (cf. Daniel 2:41-43), to try harder to unify, which will happen after at least two reorganizations (Revelation 17:12-13).
- By breaking political norms and acting like a ‘strong man’ this will help Europeans being more accepting of their beast ‘strong man’ (Revelation 13:1-10; 17:13).
- Donald Trump’s statements will help promote the rise of stronger European leaders like Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg.
Although, overall, the European nations have not paid for their defense to the amount they have suggested they would, pressuring them to spend more will 1) encourage them to be independent of the USA and 2) put Europe in a position where it has a great army (Daniel 11:25), many ships (Daniel 11:40), and access to nuclear weapons (cf. Deuteronomy 29:23-25; Isaiah 9:19-21;Ezekiel 6:6), which will help it conquer the USA, which is the military power with the strongest fortresses (cf. Daniel 11:39).

Europe is prophesied to reorganize and put in power a man who is even more bold and egotistical than Donald Trump.
Donald Trump is unknowingly pushing the European Beast to rise up. Now, even the majority of Europeans unknowingly want to support that.

Since the Donald Trump’s second presidency, the European Union is even more focused on being its own power independent of the United States.
Europe will reorganize per Revelation 17:12-13 and become a military power per Revelation 13:3-4 and Daniel 11:39-43.
Yet, it will not end up as a democracy as many there now hope.
