Western Ukraine votes to move towards European Union; shelling outside of Donetsk

The Ukrainian government in Kiev got additional support from the latest vote there:

October 27, 2014

(Reuters) – Pro-Western parties will dominate Ukraine’s parliament after an election handed President Petro Poroshenko a mandate to end a separatist conflict and steer the country further out of Russia’s orbit into Europe’s mainstream.

Poroshenko planned to start coalition talks on Monday after exit polls and partial results showed most of the groups that were holding up democratic and legal reforms demanded by the European Union had been swept out of parliament on Sunday.

He still faces huge problems: Russia is resisting moves by Kiev to one day join the European Union, a ceasefire is barely holding in the east where government forces have been fighting pro-Russian separatists, and the economy is in dire straits.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin can still influence events, not least as the main backer of the rebels in the east and through Moscow’s role as natural gas supplier to Ukraine and the EU.

But with his own bloc and a party led by his ally, Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk, running neck and neck on more than 21 percent support after more than a quarter of votes on party lists were counted, Poroshenko is assured of dominating parliament.

“The majority of voters were in favour of the political forces that support the president’s peace plan and seek a political solution to the situation in the Donbass,” Poroshenko said soon after polls closed, referring to the region where fighting has been heaviest in the industrialised east.

Final results from voting on party lists and single-seat constituencies will not be known for days.  http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/10/27/us-ukraine-crisis-election-idUSKCN0IF00R20141027

Biblically, because of prophecies involving the Medes (Jeremiah 51:11-32), some of which are in Ukraine, and those in the “north and east” in Daniel 11:44, it would seem that Russia would be closer to at least parts of Ukraine (like some of the eastern portions of it) in the end than many realize. There is also a YouTube video available related to this titled Ukraine in Prophecy?

The situation in the East remains volatile.  Kiev does not like it and many there wish to leave Ukraine:

October 27, 2014

Heavy shelling rocked the outskirts of the pro-Russian rebel stronghold of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine Monday, one day after the country held a parliamentary election.

The Donetsk mayor’s office said “powerful firing has been heard from high-caliber guns and explosions.”

Tensions remain high in the area despite a September cease-fire between Kyiv and the pro-Russian separatists.

Nearly three million voters in eastern Ukraine were unable to cast ballots in Sunday’s parliamentary elections.

Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko says exit polls show strong support for his push for democratic reforms and for closer ties to the European Union.

Two polls show the Petro Poroshenko Bloc and other pro-Europe parties dominated the elections. Poroshenko thanked voters for backing what he called “a democratic, reformist pro-Ukrainian and pro-European majority.”

The exit polls show Poroshenko’s bloc with 23 percent of the vote — a tally substantially short of an outright majority. Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s Popular Front followed with 21 percent.

Despite leading rival parties, Poroshenko and Yatsenyuk both back closer ties with the European Union and both have campaigned for reforms widely seen as needed to pull the country back from the brink of bankruptcy. Coalition talks are set to begin Monday.

The Self Help Party of western Ukraine was in third place with 13 percent of the vote, while the Opposition Bloc party of ousted Moscow-backed president Viktor Yanukovych was fourth with nearly 8 percent.

Other groups surpassing the 5 percent threshold needed to enter parliament include the Radical Party of firebrand nationalist Oleh Lyashko, the Fatherland party of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and the nationalist Svoboda Party. The Communist Party failed to gain entry.

Eastern Ukraine’s rebel leaders, who launched a rebellion against the Kyiv government in April, say they will conduct their own polls November 2.

Kyiv and a host of Western governments blame Moscow for backing rebels in the East in a conflict that has killed more than 3,700 people and brought the Ukrainian economy to the brink of collapse.

Russia has rejected the charges, with President Vladimir Putin accusing the West of backing an “anti-constitutional coup d’etat” that toppled the Yanukovych government.  http://www.voanews.com/content/heavy-shelling-rebel-held-east-ukraine-after-election/2497529.html

Parts of the eastern portion of Ukraine wish to leave Ukraine and continue to take steps to try to do so.  The government in Kiev does not want this to happen and has also taken steps.  The USA has dismissed election results in eastern Ukraine before and most likely will for the November 2, 2014 results–unless the East ends up with a pro-Western vote.

UPDATE 10/28/14  For proof of the above, I added the following which came out after I wrote the above:

October 28, 2014

Russia announced Tuesday it will recognize the results of upcoming elections in two separatist regions of eastern Ukraine.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the voting scheduled for November 2 would be important for the “legitimization of power” in the unrecognized “People’s Republics” of Donetsk and Luhansk.

While the rest of Ukraine headed to the polls on Sunday, nearly three million voters were unable to cast ballots in the eastern part of the country, where months of fighting between Ukrainian government forces and Russia-backed separatists has killed more than 3,700 people.

Eastern Ukraine’s rebel leaders, who launched a rebellion against the Kyiv government in April, said they would conduct their own poll.

President Barack Obama said Monday that the United States will not recognize elections in separatist-controlled areas unless they comply with Ukrainian law and are held with the consent of the Ukrainian government.

In the rest of the country, with almost 85 percent of the votes counted from Sunday’s parliamentary elections, two pro-Europe parties are in the lead.  http://www.voanews.com/content/russia-to-recognize-peoples-republic-election-results/2498922.html

Russia wants Ukraine and will take what it feels it can.  An election gives the Russians something they can use to claim additional territory.

Ukraine itself borders Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova. All but the first two and Moldova are currently in the European Union–and Moldova applied in 2013 (see Georgia and Moldova sign up to join European Union, Ukraine does not). On June 27, Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia signed trade and political deals with the European Union (see Ukraine, Moldova, and George sign deals with European Union; Russia not pleased).

The situation in Moldova with its upcoming election this December perhaps should be mentioned.  Notice the following:

October 25, 2014

Moldova’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) says it has registered fourteen political parties and one electoral bloc for the November general election, which will be crucial in determining whether the country looks West or East for closer integration. According to the latest opinion polls the opposition communist party (PCRM), which supports closer ties with Russia, is ahead with 25% support. However, this remains less than the combined support for the current pro-EU coalition of the Liberal Democrat Party (18%), Democrat Party (10%), and Liberal Party (8%). While the pro-EU forces are currently favourites to remain in power, a further 25% of voters polled remain undecided, ensuring ongoing uncertainty over the election result. Even if in opposition, we expect pro-Russian parties to have a strong representation in parliament, which will pose an underlying risk to the current movement towards deeper EU integration.  http://www.emergingeuropemonitor.com/risk-summary-moldova-dec-2014

Russia is watching Moldova and I believe that this has tempered some of its responses in Ukraine.  This may well change after the December election, however. It could even happen before if Russia feels it needs to do something related to Donetsk and/or that it can impact the Moldova elections.

The European Union has demonstrated a history and willingness to enlarge–and it is interested in Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia. The USA keeps encouraging all of this, but this will not end well for the USA (cf. Daniel 11:39; Isaiah 10:5-11).

The Bible prophesied that a little horn would develop into what apparently is becoming a European entity. Actually what is now the EU began as a small organization involving three small countries located in the northern and western regions of Europe (Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, called the Benelux nations)–they then helped form the European Economic Community. Which expanded into the European Union.

Notice that, the Bible prophesied that a little horn would mainly expand South and East:

And out of one of them came a little horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Glorious Land. And it grew up to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and some of the stars to the ground, and trampled them. He even exalted himself as high as the Prince of the host; and by him the daily sacrifices were taken away, and the place of His sanctuary was cast down. Because of transgression, an army was given over to the horn to oppose the daily sacrifices; and he cast truth down to the ground. He did all this and prospered (Daniel 8:9-12).

And while the above has had a past fulfillment, this prophecy seems to be dual (compare with Daniel 11:27-39). Anyway, the European Union has mainly expanded south and east of the Benelux nations. Now, approximately 500 million people are now under a new, single (though not completed united) government, called the European Union, headquartered in Brussels. Ukraine is mainly east of much of the EU–thus its geography is consistent with being part of the EU. And Moldova and Georgia are south and east, which is also consistent. While some claim that the EU must reduce down to ten or eleven nations to fulfill biblical prophecy, that is simply not the case (see Must the Ten Kings of Revelation 17:12 Rule over Ten Currently Existing Nations?).

Not all in Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia want to be part of the European Union, some prefer to be in Russia’s upcoming Eurasian Union. Those that become disillusioned/disappointed by the EU may ultimately back out of it.

Neither Russia nor the European Union are the answer for what ails Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia.  They need repentance and the Kingdom of God.  But instead, most there will choose a way that will result in war (Daniel 11:39-45; Jeremiah 51:11-32).
