QAnon, Conspiracies, Christianity, and Donald Trump

This article is part of “Shadowland,” a project about conspiracy thinking in America.

June 2020 edition of The Atlantic

If you were an adherent, no one would be able to tell. You would look like any other American.But you are hard to identify just from the way you look—which is good, because someday soon dark forces may try to track you down. You understand this sounds crazy, but you don’t care.

You know that the mainstream media are their handmaidens, in partnership with Hillary Clinton and the secretive denizens of the deep state. You know that only Donald Trump stands between you and a damned and ravaged world. You see plague and pestilence sweeping the planet, and understand that they are part of the plan. You know that a clash between good and evil cannot be avoided, and you yearn for the Great Awakening that is coming. And so you must be on guard at all times. You must shield your ears from the scorn of the ignorant. You must find those who are like you. And you must be prepared to fight.

You know all this because you believe in Q. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/06/qanon-nothing-can-stop-what-is-coming/610567/

Before going further in the article (and its stops using italics), true Christians know that pestilences are coming because Jesus foretold them (Matthew 24:8) and not because of “Q.” Christians have faith in Jesus, not some worldly political movement.

Back to the article in The Atlantic:

THE ORIGINS OF QAnon are recent … QAnon, derived from a mysterious figure, “Q,” posting anonymously on 4chan. QAnon does not possess a physical location, but it has an infrastructure, a literature, a growing body of adherents, and a great deal of merchandising. …

CONSPIRACY THEORIES are a constant in American history, and it is tempting to dismiss them as inconsequential. But as the 21st century has progressed, such a dismissal has begun to require willful blindness. …

The power of the internet was understood early on, but the full nature of that power—its ability to shatter any semblance of shared reality, undermining civil society and democratic governance in the process—was not. …

QAnon is emblematic of modern America’s susceptibility to conspiracy theories, and its enthusiasm for them. But it is also already much more than a loose collection of conspiracy-minded chat-room inhabitants. …

ON OCTOBER 28, 2017, the anonymous user now widely referred to as “Q” appeared for the first time on 4chan, a so-called image board that is known for its grotesque memes, sickening photographs, and brutal teardown culture. Q predicted the imminent arrest of Hillary Clinton …  Q predicted the imminent arrest of Hillary Clinton and a violent uprising nationwide, posting this:

HRC extradition already in motion effective yesterday with several countries in case of cross border run. Passport approved to be flagged effective 10/30 @ 12:01am. …

Clinton was not arrested on October 30, but that didn’t deter Q, who continued posting ominous predictions and cryptic riddles—with prompts like “Find the reflection inside the castle”—often written in the form of tantalizing fragments and rhetorical questions. Q made it clear that he wanted people to believe he was an intelligence officer or military official with Q clearance, a level of access to classified information that includes nuclear-weapons design and other highly sensitive material. …

In its broadest contours, the QAnon belief system looks something like this: Q is an intelligence or military insider with proof that corrupt world leaders are secretly torturing children all over the world; the malefactors are embedded in the deep state; Donald Trump is working tirelessly to thwart them. (“These people need to ALL be ELIMINATED,” Q wrote in one post.) The eventual destruction of the global cabal is imminent, Q prophesies, but can be accomplished only with the support of patriots who search for meaning in Q’s clues. To believe Q requires rejecting mainstream institutions, ignoring government officials, battling apostates, and despising the press. One of Q’s favorite rallying cries is “You are the news now.” Another is “Enjoy the show,” a phrase that his disciples regard as a reference to a coming apocalypse: When the world as we know it comes to an end, everyone’s a spectator.

People who have taken Q to heart like to say they’ve been paying attention from the very beginning … One phrase that serves as a special touchstone among QAnon adherents is “the calm before the storm.”  … Q followers agree that a Great Awakening lies ahead, and will bring salvation. … QAnon adherents see Q’s anonymity as proof of Q’s credibility—despite their deep mistrust of unnamed sources in the media. …

IN A MIAMI COFFEESHOP last year, I met with a man who has gotten a flurry of attention in recent years for his research on conspiracy theories—a political-science professor at the University of Miami named Joseph Uscinski. … QAnon isn’t a far-right conspiracy, the way it’s often described, Uscinski went on, despite its obviously pro-Trump narrative. And that’s because Trump isn’t a typical far-right politician. Q appeals to people with the greatest attraction to conspiracy thinking of any kind, and that appeal crosses ideological lines.

Of course, only Jesus brings salvation (see also the free online book: Proof Jesus is the Messiah). As far as conspiracies go, the Bible warns:

11 For the Lord spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:

12 “Do not say, ‘A conspiracy,’
Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy,
Nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.
13 The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow;
Let Him be your fear,
And let Him be your dread.
14 He will be as a sanctuary, (Isaiah 8:11-14a)

Hence, we in the Continuing Church of God do not get wrapped up in what are called conspiracy theories. However, we realize that Satan is the “god of this age” (2 Corinthians 4:4) and that “the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one” (1 John 5:19).

Back to the article in The Atlantic:

WATCHKEEPERS FOR THE End of Days can easily find signs of impending doom—in comets and earthquakes, in wars and pandemics. … In 1831, a Baptist preacher in rural New York named William Miller began to publicly share his prediction that the Second Coming of Jesus was imminent. Eventually he settled on a date: October 22, 1844. When the sun came up on October 23, his followers, known as the Millerites, were crushed. The episode would come to be known as the Great Disappointment. But they did not give up. The Millerites became the Adventists, who in turn became the Seventh-day Adventists, who now have a worldwide membership of more than 20 million.

Unlike the SDAs, the true Christian church was never part of the Millerite movement.

Here is a 20th century report related to the true COG and the SDBs and SDAs:

True Church Versus Seventh Day Baptists

Another congregation of early Sabbatarians settled on the South fork of Hughes River in West Virginia in Ridgie County and among them were leaders who lead contrary to the Sabbatarians then known as the Seventh Day Baptists. Of these Christians it is recorded that they “taught obedience to the ceremonial law and enforced on the church contrary to the faith of the Seventh Day Baptists denomination, abstainance from certain meats, peculiarities of dress and urged that the church should be governed by elders exclusively.”

That makes it very blunt that they certainly weren’t the Seventh Day Baptists Church at all. And now he goes off on what we used to think. We used to think Adventists had originally been a branch of the true church, but they never were as we found from their own writings now in searching. They never were. Just like the Seventh Day Baptists never were the true church. …

Adventist Movement

William Miller, an earnest prophetical student and minister was the main leader in the movement of 1835, in which the time of the second coming of the Lord was set. His great enthusiasm for Christ’s return and a partial knowledge of prophecy led him to believe that the Lord would come back in 1844. … The year 1844, year of the disappointment, James White began publishing “The Messenger” at Rochester, New York. The name of the paper was later changed to “The Advent Review and Sabbath Herald.” … But that wasn’t the location of the true church at all.

(Blackwell D. A HANDBOOK OF CHURCH HISTORY. A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Ambassador College Graduate School of Theology, April 1973, p. 210)

Back to the article in The Atlantic:

The Seventh-day Adventists and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are thriving religious movements indigenous to America. Do not be surprised if QAnon becomes another. It already has more adherents by far than either of those two denominations had in the first decades of their existence. People are expressing their faith through devoted study of Q drops as installments of a foundational text, through the development of Q-worshipping groups, and through sweeping expressions of gratitude for what Q has brought to their lives. Does it matter that we do not know who Q is? The divine is always a mystery. Does it matter that basic aspects of Q’s teachings cannot be confirmed? The basic tenets of Christianity cannot be confirmed. Among the people of QAnon, faith remains absolute. True believers describe a feeling of rebirth, an irreversible arousal to existential knowledge. They are certain that a Great Awakening is coming. They’ll wait as long as they must for deliverance.

Trust the plan. Enjoy the show. Nothing can stop what is coming.

As far as the comment, “The divine is always a mystery,” that is not really the case. We have a free online book that helps explain that: The MYSTERY of GOD’s PLAN: Why Did God Create Anything? Why did God make you?

It was also inaccurate for the author to state, “The basic tenets of Christianity cannot be confirmed.” For some details, check out the free online books Is God’s Existence Logical? and Proof Jesus is the Messiah, to cite two examples.

As far as not stopping what is coming, the Bible teaches a Great Tribulation will occur (Matthew 24:21-22) and later Jesus will return (Matthew 24:30), have His people gathered (Matthew 24:31) and establish the millennial Kingdom of God.

God is clear that He makes prophetic statements and causes them to be fulfilled:

9 Remember the former things of old,
For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like Me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things that are not yet done,
Saying, ‘My counsel shall stand,
And I will do all My pleasure,’
11 Calling a bird of prey from the east,
The man who executes My counsel, from a far country.
Indeed I have spoken it;
I will also bring it to pass.
I have purposed it;
I will also do it. (Isaiah 46:9-11)

Fulfilled prophecy is part of the proof that God exists and should be real to your life EVERYDAY!

Between 1/5th and 1/3rd of the Bible is prophetic. Since, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God'” (Luke 4:4), knowing the prophetic word is important. All scripture, including prophecy, is important:

16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

If you do not understand relevant prophecy, you cannot “be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Yet, most discount or misunderstand prophecy. Including, apparently, the author of the story in The Atlantic.

Now, since Donald Trump is often brought up related to QAnon, the following may be of interest:

Trump Derangement vs. Trump Enablement

As the world continues its draconian slide through the plandemic psyop, our country has divided itself firmly into two misguided camps. As has been the case since the election of Donald Trump, that division is centered around his impossibly cartoonish personality.

Those who suffer from the very real Trump Derangement Syndrome disorder have taken the side of the virus, clinging to it like desperate leeches. They are emotionally invested in the virus, and in the medical and scientific “experts” who promote its dangers, and advocate more authoritarian means to combat it.

Meanwhile, the Trump faithful who remain loyal to him in spite of all the evidence that he is in fact just another neocon Republican, have contracted their own disorder, Trump Enablement Syndrome. This group, while largely demanding that the country open up again, bends with every Trumpian flip-flop. They cheer when Trump quips that we can “beat” the virus without a vaccine, and turn a deaf ear when he announces the military will be administering it.

Only in the conspiracy world I inhabit can one find independent alternative views. Every politician in both “competing” parties is waiting breathlessly for a vaccine to defeat this horrific plague. They conveniently forget that the flu has not been eradicated by a vaccine. They are also shockingly ignorant of the well documented negative effects from vaccines. Instead, they are listening to the Godfather of this plandemic, noted nondoctor and nonscientist, eugenicist Bill Gates. …

The Trump Derangement people are literally wishing for him to die on social media. They would vote for Hitler over Trump. They have come to retroactively love the likes of George W. Bush, because of his public opposition to Trump. Anyone who hates Trump is good in their eyes. If we can just get rid of the buffoonish Orange Man, we can go back to the world of justice, peace, and fairness that we all remember so well prior to 2016.

The Trump Enablement people feast on Trump’s tweets, and demand nothing else. Sound bites and juvenile names are enough to satisfy them. Forget ending DACA, or birth-right citizenship, or the destructive foreign visa worker programs, or stopping the senseless wars, or rebuilding the infrastructure, or that autism-vaccines commission headed by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. They also continue to claim Trump has stopped child sex trafficking (even as Jeffrey Epstein was allowed to “suicide” himself under his watch). They breathlessly await the ever-changing date when those 150,000 sealed indictments will bring down the Deep State. They believe that William Barr, a swamp creature of decades long good standing, will fulfill Trump’s “drain the swamp” promise. https://donaldjeffries.wordpress.com/2020/05/19/trump-derangement-vs-trump-enablement/

Donald Trump is not the savior of the USA. Nor are his opponents.

We need the Kingdom of God.

That is not a conspiracy, but good news.

Good news that we can trust.

COVID 19 is NOT the End, but could it be TEOTWAWKI? The novel coronavirus called COVID-19 is wreaking havoc around the world. Many states of the USA as well as countries in Europe are on lockdown with shelter in place /shelter in residence requirements. In France, a form is required when you are not at your house. In Spain, drones are being used to warn people who are outside to got back to their homes–does that bring up feelings of ‘Big Brother’? Italy, France, and other areas are using police and/or military force to encourage people to stay inside. According to the Bible could this be the end? If not, what has to happen first? Have the second and third of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse started their ride? Could COVID-19 be the fourth horseman? Why or why not? Could we be seeing The End of the World as We Know It (TEOTWAWKI) like the R.E.M.’s 1987 single song discussed? Do Christians need to fear? What did Jesus teach? What did the Psalmist teach? COVID-19 Leading to 666? The novel coronavirus of Wuhan, China fame, is now called COVID-19. It has also been called the ‘Coronapocalypse.’ Does COVID-19 have any prophetic ramifications? What did Jesus teach about pestilences and sorrows in the Olivet prophecy in Matthew 24? Could COVID-19 be the ride of the fourth horseman of the Apocalypse? Why was this type of disease expected according to the O. Here is a link to a version in the Spanish language: ld Testament prophecies in Deuteronomy and Leviticus? What has the US Centers for Disease Control warned about? What has the CDC reported about the flu? Were there lessons about fear and infections in the 2011 movie ‘Contagion’? Because of COVID-19, the World Health Organization (WHO), nation of Iran, and certain French locations are telling people not to use cash, but instead electronic forms of payment. The US Federal Reserve is now quarantining money repatriated from Asia to reduce the potential spread of the coronavirus on US currency bills. Is COVID-19 worse than we have been told or could this all be a ‘false flag’ event to encourage people to move towards a cashless society? If the thousands of deaths associated with COVID-19 are pushing parts of the world towards cashlessness, how much more likely will the ride of the fourth horseman and over a billion human deaths motivate people to move to making electronic payments that can be monitored? The Bible tells of a soon coming society that controls buying and selling to force allegiance to a coming European Beast power, known as 666 (Revelation 13:16-18). Does the ‘great tribulation’ begin before ride of the fourth horseman or with the opening of the fifth seal of Revelation 6? Do the words of Jesus helps us better understand the sequence of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse and the start of the Great Tribulation? Will the ride of the fourth horseman help lead to the rise of 666? Is that ride very close? Dr. Thiel addresses these issues and more in this video. Here is a link to a version in the Spanish language: El COVID-19 ¿Conduce al 666?
Biological Warfare and Prophecy Is biological warfare possible? Was it prophesied? Scientists have long warned that pathogenic organisms like the coronavirus could be weaponized. Furthermore, back in 2017, there were concerns that the biological research facility being constructed in Wuhan, China was risky and that a coronavirus from it could be released. On January 25, 2020, China’s President Xi Jinping publicly stated that the situation with the Wuhan-related strain of the coronavirus was grave. Did Church of God writers like the late evangelist Raymond McNair warn that engineered viruses (the “Doomsday bug”) were consistent with prophecies from Jesus? Did a warning from CCOG leader Bob Thiel warn about risks of genetically-modified (GMO) mosquitoes come to pass? Could human research and/or the consumption of biblically-unclean animals such as bats and snakes be a factor in current outbreaks or coming future pestilences? What about famines?
