Spain and the British territory of Gibraltar are marking the beginning of a new chapter from Wednesday, with the dismantling of border controls that had long been a source of tension and frustration for daily commuters.
A border fence has been fully removed after Britain and the European Union formally inked a historic treaty easing border checks on Tuesday after years of post-Brexit wrangling.
Gibraltar — a tiny self-governing British territory on Spain’s southern coast — has a contested status. Spain has maintained a sovereignty claim over the territory known as “The Rock” since it was ceded to Britain in 1713.
‘Europe is back’
With a population of approximately 40,000 people, Gibraltar relies on some 15,500 cross-border workers from Spain who travel in and out every day. …
“Europe is back,” Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo declared as hundreds of people gathered for the official opening, waving Spanish flags. …
The Tuesday signing of the deal took place in Brussels with Picardo being joined by European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, British Minister of State for Europe Stephen Doughty, and Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares.
In effect, the agreement brings the territory into the EU’s Schengen free travel area. People arriving at Gibraltar airport will show their passports to both Gibraltar and Spanish border officers.

Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez says Gibraltar border removal closes ‘open wound’

The lifting of border controls between Spain and Gibraltar has closed “an open wound,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Wednesday as an agreement allowing free movement across the frontier came into force.
Sánchez said the end of routine border checks marked a historic moment.
“For decades, the border fence was exactly that, an open wound for the thousands of workers who crossed every day,” the Socialist leader said.
“Today, we are making history, good history, because today, the last wall in continental Europe falls,” he added, saying the agreement opened the doors to a “new era” of shared prosperity for the region. …
The agreement will align Gibraltar with the rules of Europe’s passport-free Schengen travel area.

Facial recognition cameras at the Rock
With the border fence gone, Gibraltar officials have set up live facial recognition cameras at entry points and throughout the territory.
Chief Minister Picardo said the territory will have many more closed-circuit television cameras and that it has increased its police presence as well as resources for customs and coast guard agencies.

So, people can cross, but will often be surveilled. Yet, all of this appears to be pushing Gibraltar into the arms of the Europeans.

Spain’s state radio and television added it was “the first time since 1713, the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, when Spain lost the Rock, that the British government had ever agreed to tackle sovereignty.
Some of the Spanish outspokenness was dismissed as being merely for home consumption. Spanish officials privately admit they do not expect a rapid return of the colony. What Does the Bible Teach?
Notice more detail about what was told to Rebekah who had just agreed to become the wife of Isaac:
“Our sister, may you become The mother of thousands of ten thousands; And may your descendants possess The gates of those who hate them” (Genesis 24:60).
We in the Church of God have been teaching for decades that the United Kingdom and USA would ultimately lose many of their sea gates–we believe they possessed them because of blessings from God and would lose them because of blatant disobedience.
Notice a couple of prophetic warnings that are consistent with that:
58 “If you do not carefully observe all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and awesome name, THE LORD YOUR GOD, 59 then the Lord will bring upon you and your descendants extraordinary plagues — great and prolonged plagues — and serious and prolonged sicknesses. 60 Moreover He will bring back on you all the diseases of Egypt, of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you. 61 Also every sickness and every plague, which is not written in this Book of the Law, will the Lord bring upon you until you are destroyed. 62 You shall be left few in number, whereas you were as the stars of heaven in multitude, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God. 63 And it shall be, that just as the Lord rejoiced over you to do you good and multiply you, so the Lord will rejoice over you to destroy you and bring you to nothing; and you shall be plucked from off the land which you go to possess. (Deuteronomy 28:58-63)

So, those that were promised blessings were also told that they would be subject to losing those blessings if they disobeyed God. …
Bible prophecy suggests that the Anglo-nations received the ‘sea gates’ as part of the blessing given to the descendants of Rebecca. Bible prophecy also teaches that those who received those types of blessings would be on the receiving end of curses as they got farther away from God.
Because of continuous disobedience, the USA and UK have lost various sea gates already. …
