BBC reported the following:

Ukraine: UK and EU ‘badly misread’ Russia

February 20, 2015

The UK and the EU have been accused of a “catastrophic misreading” of the mood in the Kremlin in the run-up to the crisis in Ukraine.

The House of Lords EU committee claimed Europe “sleepwalked” into the crisis.

The EU had not realised the depth of Russian hostility to its plans for closer relations with Ukraine, it said. …

The report also follows comments from Defence Secretary Michael Fallon, who has warned Russian President Vladimir Putin poses a “real and present danger” to three Baltic states.

He was speaking after RAF jets were scrambled to escort two Russian military aircraft seen off the Cornwall coast on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, shelling was reported in several parts of eastern Ukraine on Thursday, including around the rebel-held city of Donetsk. …

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said no-one could have predicted the scale of the “unjustifiable and illegal” Russian intervention and it was for the people of Ukraine to decide on its relationship with the EU.

The ceasefire deal stated that both sides would pull heavy weapons out by today. But, basically both sides are waiting for the other to pull theirs out first.

As far as reading or not reading Russia that the UK’s Foreign Office has claimed, it overlooked the obvious.  Russia’ President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly decried the loss of the Soviet Union as a major disaster, put together the Eurasian Union, and has repeatedly made it clear he feels that Ukraine should be more attached to Russia than the European Union.

Now, it should be noted that today marks an anniversary of protests in Ukraine:

February 20, 2015

The Ukrainian capital, Kiev, is marking the first anniversary of the clashes between protesters and police which toppled ex-President Viktor Yanukovych.

More than 100 people died in the violence on the Maidan – Kiev’s central Independence Square – a year ago.

The anti-Yanukovych revolt was called the “EuroMaidan revolution”, as huge crowds demanded a pact with the EU. …

Ukrainians will remember 20 February for many years to come.

It became the tipping point for the anti-government protest that had gained momentum all winter.

What started as a peaceful rally against President Yanukovych’s decision to steer Ukraine off its pro-European path morphed into a fight against the corrupt government.

Despite high hopes of many of the protesters in the west of Ukraine, Ukraine has not fared well since the Euromaidan protests.  Crimea voted to leave Ukraine and was annexed by Russia.  Separatists in eastern Ukraine would like to do the same.  Thousands of Ukrainians have been killed in military action since ‘EuroMaidan.’

Russia considered the protests an illegal coup that was flamed by the West to reduce Russian influence with Ukraine.  Russia has taken many steps since EuroMaidan to try to gain influence in and with Ukraine.  At this moment, Russia hopes for either a split in which it ends up with parts of eastern Ukraine or that the Ukrainians will get so disappointed with how matters have turned out that they will welcome Russia.  Since the Europeans are supplying money to Kiev and most Ukrainians in the west of Ukraine do not care Russia’s encouragement of the separatists, that latter item will not happen for a time.

Biblically, ‘the kings of the Medes,’ which includes Russia and at least parts of Ukraine will unite against Europe (Jeremiah 51:11, 28-29).  Before then, there will be some type of agreement between Russia and Europe that will ease tensions (cf. Revelation 13:8; Revelation 18), but only for a time (cf. Daniel 11:44).
