Well, the rift brewing in the Eastern Orthodox world was just made official. Notice two following reports:

Russia Orthodox Church cuts ties with Alexandria patriarch

December 27, 2019

MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian Orthodox Church has cut ties with the head of the Eastern Orthodox Patriarchate in Alexandria following his decision to recognize Ukraine’s new independent Orthodox Church.

The Russian church’s Holy Synod ruled late Thursday to rupture all links with Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa.

It noted, however, that it will remain in communion with those clerics of his church who didn’t support the decision.

The Holy Synod also decided that its parishes in Africa will be removed from the Patriarchate of Alexandria’s jurisdiction and made directly subordinate to the Russian Orthodox Church’s head, Patriarch Kirill.

The move follows January’s decision by Constantinople Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, who is considered first among equals in Orthodox patriarchy, to grant independence to the new Orthodox Church of Ukraine, severing its centuries-long ties with the Russian Orthodox Church.

The Eastern Orthodox Church in Africa represents a small fraction of Egypt’s Orthodox Christians, the majority of whom belong to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria.

The Coptic church’s followers are believed to constitute ten percent of Egypt’s 100 million population. The official spokesman of the Coptic Church Paul Halim told The Associated Press on Friday that his church never discussed whether to recognize the Ukraine’s church and that the Coptic Pope Tawadros II maintains “excellent relations” with the Russian Orthodox Church. https://apnews.com/fb0dbd4225e4ced2d35706fa5cecd5fa

While the Russian Orthodox have ecumenical interest (see Orthodox Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, of the Patriarchate of Moscow, promoting ecumenical cooperation), they have been incensed that the Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople changed the centuries old status of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to no longer be under Russia.

Perhaps it should be mentioned that, most of the Eastern Orthodox are actually Russian Orthodox. Yet, as one of the articles above states, the Patriarch of Constantinople has long been considered the “first among equals” in the Eastern Orthodox world. The current Patriarch Bartholomew has accepted an ecumenical agenda that many of the Greek Orthodox do not like (for details, see Why Should American Catholics Fear Unity with the Orthodox? (And the Protestants)).

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has long maintained a close working relationship with the Russian Orthodox Church and has not been pleased with this.

Nor are various Russian Orthodox leaders. Despite warnings from Patriarch Kirill, Patriarch Bartholomew signed a document in January 2019 recognizing Ukrainian church independence from Russia (see ‘Ukraine Orthodox Church granted independence from Russian Church’).

And the Orthodox ‘schism’ was made even more official then.

Related to the schism. the Continuing Church of God (CCOG) put out the following video on our Bible News Prophecy YouTube channel:

20:29

In 2018, after an appeal by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko a growing rift between the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople (Bartholomew) and the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church (Kirill) became a schism. When Constantinople declared that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was granted ”autocephaly” (independence), the Russian Orthodox declared this was a schism and broke off Eucharistic communion with Constantinople. Like the ‘great schism of 1054,’ many see this schism as primarily political and not theological. Will this rift possibly be repaired? If so, will ecumenical unity be temporal? Who is mystery Babylon? Will Russia support the Beast of Revelation 13 and later be a leader in destroying end time Babylon? Dr. Thiel answers these questions and more, plus provides additional historical information.

Here is a link to the sermonette video: Orthodox Schisms: What Will Happen?

Perhaps I should mention that both Patriarchs Bartholomew and Kirill have a decent relationship with the ecumenical Pope Francis.

Despite this widening schism, future biblical prophecies (e.g. Revelation 13) indicate, for a time, the Russian Orthodox will go along with some of Constantinople’s ecumenical plans. But I also believe, based on prophecies such as in Jeremiah 50, that the Russians and the Russian Orthodox will one day turn against the Beast power that will arise in Europe.

The announcement by the Russian Orthodox synod related to Alexandria, in my view, is further establishing a precedent for the future when Russia and various of its allies will turn against the rising Babylonian Beast in Europe.

Bible prophecy shows that Russia will lead a massive empire in the time of the end (Jeremiah 50:9,11,41-43; Isaiah 13:1, 17-19). Russia is also developing more powerful weapons (e.g. see ‘Putin says Russia is leading world in hypersonic weapons’ and ‘Runet’).

Perhaps it should be mentioned that the Bible shows that the USA and its closest allies will fall, but not by Russia (cf. Daniel 11:39; see also USA in Prophecy: The Strongest Fortresses).

For a time, Russia will likely have a treaty and other relations with Europe (cf. Revelation 13:3-4.8 and Ezekiel 27:13-14)–but this will not last (cf. Daniel 11:44). Ultimately, the Bible shows that a Russian-influenced coalition will destroy much of Europe (Jeremiah 50 & 51). However, that will not happen until towards the end of the ‘Day of the Lord.’ An event well over seven years in the future from now (see When Will the Great Tribulation Begin? The ‘Day of the Lord’?).

The current rift between Kirill and Bartholomew will not mean that Constantinople and Russia will not cooperate ecumenically in the future–Constantinople and Russia will, no matter what happens in the near term.

But that cooperation will not last.

That being said, the Orthodox do have several points right on doctrine, though often they have compromised.

The Continuing Church of God recently put together a sermon related to the Eastern Orthodox on its ContinuingCOG channel:

1:20:19

Both the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Continuing Church of God believe that they best represent the original Christian church in the 21st century. The groups are very different in many ways, however, there are a surprisingly high number of beliefs that both groups share. This even includes beliefs that various Protestants that are unfamiliar with Christian church history tend to consider to be cultic or heretical. In this sermon, Dr. Thiel covers over 40 similar beliefs that both groups hold. These include matters related to Adam, the fate of babies, where the true Christian church began, certain saints, lack of purgatory, semi-Arian early view of the Godhead, Jesus as Savior, the original date and time of Passover, early millennium views, aspects of apokatastasis, aspects of the Last Day, the Ten Commandments, and baptism by immersion. Though they do not agree with all aspects of the similar beliefs. Which church changed? Which church still represents the original Christian church? Knowing the Bible, early church history, and these similar beliefs should help those truly interested in sincere and honest inquiry know.

All who profess Christ should “contend earnestly for the faith once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3), which is what we in the Continuing Church of God are doing.

However, the Eastern Orthodox need to change mightily in order to also do that.
