UN approves Iran deal, US tells Israel it may need to agree to disagree

Barack Obama endorses the deal, Pope Francis endorsed the deal, and now the United Nations’ Security Council has officially endorsed the Iranian deal:

WASHINGTON—The U.N. Security Council has unanimously endorsed the agreement Iran and a group of six world powers struck last week to limit the Iranian nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

The 15-member Council quickly voted Monday morning. The five permanent, veto-holding Council members are signatories to the agreement, so the resolution was expected to be adopted.

Now that it has been passed, the deal goes into effect after no later than 90 days.  The next key milestone comes after the U.N. nuclear watchdog – the International Atomic Energy Agency – issues a report, expected in December, on the resolution of past and present issues with Iran’s nuclear program.  That is when Iran would see relief from the sanctions that have hurt its economy.

The U.N. vote comes as U.S. lawmakers begin their own review of the agreement.

President Barack Obama’s administration sent it to Congress on Sunday, setting off a 60-day review period.  Lawmakers can choose to approve the deal or reject it and refuse to lift congressionally-imposed sanctions against Iran.  Obama has said he would veto any rejection.  http://www.voanews.com/content/un-security-council-expected-to-approve-iran-nuclear-deal/2870048.html

Iran is an area that the US President, the Vatican, and the UN have agreed on.  They also have other areas of agreement (see United Nations: Humankind’s Last Hope or New World Order?).

Of course, Israel and others have concerns about the deal:

Selling the deal

U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter is on a tour of the Middle East as part of efforts to ease fears about the nuclear deal.  Carter began the trip in Israel Sunday and will travel to Saudi Arabia, Iran’s main regional rival, as well as Jordan.

On Tuesday, Carter will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who has called the deal a “historic mistake” that would only make it easier for Iran to back its proxies in the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia has officially said it supports the deal, although it is also thought to have similar concerns to Israel’s that the agreement will enhance the Shi’ite power’s influence across the Middle East.

“One of the reasons this deal is a good one is that it does nothing to prevent the military option… which we are preserving and continually improving,” Carter told reporters en route to Tel Aviv. “But the point of the nuclear deal is to get the result of no Iranian nuclear weapon without carrying out a military strike.”

He said he does not expect to change Israeli officials’ minds about the deal, but said the two countries could “agree to disagree.” …

On Saturday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei commented the deal does not signal cooperation with the U.S. and its allies on other issues, triggering a stern response from Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

“If anyone thought that the sweeping concessions for Iran would bring about a change in its policy, they have received a decisive answer over the weekend…” Netanyahu said Sunday during a weekly Cabinet meeting.  “The Iranians don’t even make an effort to hide the fact that they will use the hundreds of billions of dollars they will receive in this deal to arm their terror machine.”

In an interview that aired Sunday, British Prime Minister David Cameron said he isn’t idealistic about what the deal means for diplomatic relations with Iran.

“We shouldn’t be naive or starry-eyed in any way about the regime that we are dealing with. I am certainly not,” he told NBC’s Meet the Press. “I spoke to [Iranian] President Rouhani yesterday and said we want to see a change in approach that Iran takes to issues like Syria and Yemen and to terrorism in the region and we want the change in behavior that should follow from that change. So we are not starry-eyed at all and I would reassure our Gulf allies about that, but actually taking the nuclear weapon issue of the table — that is a success.”  http://www.voanews.com/content/un-security-council-expected-to-approve-iran-nuclear-deal/2870048.html

On Saturday, Iran’s Ayatollah claimed that it is the USA  who are the real terrorists and he referred to the nation of Israel as ‘wicked Zionists’  (see After deal, Iran’s Khamenei calls USA ‘arrogant’ and ‘the real terrorists;’ he also says Iran will not change its policies in Middle East). Iran has no intention of wanting to be the friend of the USA or anything but an enemy to Israel.

Notice, however, that the USA decided to make some statements that Iran does not like:

Military action could still be used to prevent Iran developing a nuclear bomb, despite the agreement struck this week, the US defence secretary has said.

Ashton Carter made the comments en route to Israel, the first leg of a tour of the Middle East.

He is seeking to ease concerns of a key ally who has been one of the most vocal critics of the nuclear deal.

But Mr Carter admitted he was “not going to change anybody’s mind in Israel” http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-33590342

Iran‘s foreign minister on Monday criticized the United States and Israel for not taking the threat of military action against Tehran off the table following the landmark nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.

The official IRNA news agency quoted Iran’s top diplomat, Mohammad Javad Zarif, as saying the military option remains a very hazardous idea.

“Applying force … is not an option but an unwise and dangerous temptation,” he said. Yet, Zarif added, “there are people who talk about illegal and illegitimate application of force” for their own purposes.
He called the nuclear deal reached last week a “victory of diplomacy over war and violence.”

Zarif did not single out any specific country but his remarks came a day after U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said during a visit to Israel that the accord imposes no limits on what Washington can do to ensure the security of Israel and U.S. Arab allies. http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/1.666896

So, both the USA and Israel have stated that they will consider military action against Iran in the future.

Possibly because of the deal Iran just got, it may think that the USA or Israel would not do that.  That would be dangerous for Iran.

It is very likely that Iran will ‘overplay’ its hand some day.

Since Iran will NOT be the final King of the South of Bible prophecy (cf. Daniel 11:4-43), regular readers of this page realize that I have repeatedly written that Iran may somehow get “neutralized” before this final king rises up. And it maybe that provoking some type of conflict with Israel (through an attack or through simply possessing nuclear bombs) and/or the USA, etc.

Although Iran wants to dominate the Islamic world, Bible prophecy shows that it will not. But, because leaders like its past and current presidents credit a non-existent Imam Mahdi for various events and its Supreme Leader has claimed to actually speak to him, the regime in Iran must be considered unstable and capable of taking steps that would seem illogical to outsiders.

This makes Iran dangerous. Iran may well damage Israel (Isaiah 22:1-14) and even the USA. But that will not end well for Iran (cf. Jeremiah 49:34-38).

The Obama Administration is trying to tell everyone what a great deal it made with Iran.  It describes the deal quite differently than how the Iranians seem to view it.

While a temporary peace will come to the Middle East (cf. Daniel 9:27, see also The ‘Peace Deal’ of Daniel 9:27), this deal is not that one.  Expect more conflict in the Middle East for a time.  The world risks having another war in the most volatile region in the world.
