Europe demands answers about U.S. bugging claims

(CNN) — The European Commission will sweep its offices for electronic listening devices and other security breaches following revelations of alleged U.S. surveillance programs targeting European leaders, a commission spokeswoman said Monday.

The allegations, reported Sunday by the German news magazine Der Spiegel, threaten to derail negotiations on a variety of issues with the United States, French President Francois Hollande said Monday. U.S. and EU officials are scheduled to begin talks on a proposed trans-Atlantic free trade agreement next month.

Hollande said any such surveillance must stop immediately before negotiations can go forward…

In Brussels, Der Spiegel says, the agency targeted the Justus Lipsius Building, which houses the European Council and the EU Council of Ministers, the union’s main decision-making and legislative body.

And in Washington, the magazine report claims, the NSA installed bugs in the European Union’s building and infiltrated its computer network…

European Parliament President Martin Schulz said he was “deeply worried and shocked” by the claims. “If the allegations prove to be true, it would be an extremely serious matter which will have a severe impact on EU-U.S. relations,” he said. “On behalf of the European Parliament, I demand full clarification and require further information speedily from the U.S. authorities with regard to these allegations.” http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/01/world/europe/eu-nsa/

Germany said if allegations that the U.S. National Security Agency bugged European Union offices and gained access to its internal computer networks are true, then such spying on friends is “unacceptable.”…

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who has been involved in Middle East peace negotiations, said Monday he was not aware of the reports, but that it is “not unusual” for lots of nations to engage in efforts to protect their security.

“I will say that every country in the world that is engaged in international affairs of national security undertakes lots of activities to protect its national security and all kinds of information contributes to that,” Kerry said.

He discussed the issue with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on the sidelines of a regional conference in Brunei, and promised to return to those talks after learning more about the situation.

The allegations have led some in Europe to call for a suspension of talks on a trans-Atlantic trade agreement…

Notice that apparently it is only the Anglo-descended nations that the USA has exempted from”spy attacks”–they are considered to be ‘close friends,’ but other nations, like the rest of the European Union apparently are not.

What is Europe up to that the USA thinks it needs this alleged level of espionage? I suspect that there are two views in the USA government about Europe. One that the Europeans are a major military threat and the other that it is that Europe really is a close ally. While the former view will ultimately be proven right, the latter view will grow in the USA to the point that the European military plans will end up beating the USA (Daniel 11:39).

Yesterday, Germany demanded details on the USA’s spying (Germany: USA is engaged in ‘cold war’ against us, Europe furious). And that is not all the Germans and the rest of Europe want.

I have long warned that I believed that the USA would share too much of its military information with the Europeans and that this would be a factor in the eventual European takeover of the USA. While the USA does have a tendency to excessively spy, it may very well be that it does believe that the Germans are working on projects that the USA considers to be militarily dangerous to the USA. Years ago, leaders in the USA and UK were worried that if Europe developed its then proposed Galileo ‘GPS’ system, that could pose a military threat against the USA–and not only is the Galileo project in process, the USA is going to allow itself to link to it and thus give the Europeans a unique way to help eliminate the USA. Yet few Americans consider that any real threat will come from Germany and Europe. But according to biblical prophecy the final Beast power (Revelation 13; Daniel 11) will arise in Europe, and this will result in the takeover of the USA and its Anglo-descended allies (cf. Daniel 11:39).

At this point, I would like to comment about Justus Lipsius. Notice what Wikipedia states about him:

Justus Lipsius (Joose Lips or Josse Lips) (18 October 1547 – 23 March 1606) was a Southern-Netherlandish (Belgian) philologist and humanist. Lipsius wrote a series of works designed to revive ancient Stoicism in a form that would be compatible with Christianity…

His ideas about the ideal citizen—a man that acts according to reason, is answerable to himself, is in control of his emotions, and is ready to fight—found wide acceptance in the turbulent times of the Reformation. This Lipsian view, translated to politics, entails rationalisation of the state and its apparatus of government, autocratic rule by the prince, discipline dispensed to subjects, and strong military defence. These principles lie at the foundation of the early modern state.

Notice that he wanted to combine ancient philosophy with the Greco-Roman “Christianity,’ wanted state involvement in many matters, believed in monarchy, wanted a strong military, and wanted citizens that would fight. And this is the man that the EU named their building in Brussels after.

Does that not give some insights as to the goals of the European Union.

Now, the government of the USA does have reasons to be concerned about Europe. Yet, the USA wants to have it both ways. It claims that it is an close ally to the Europeans, but privately it does not trust them. This is a sign of hypocrisy. The Bible actually warns that God will send a European-based power against a hypocritical nation:

5 O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.

6 I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

7 Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

8 For he saith, Are not my princes altogether kings?

9 Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?

10 As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;

11 Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols? (Isaiah 10:5-11)

Notice that the above says that while the Assyrian (European) power does not think it wants to be warlike, that it really is internally, and will act that way.

Now that the USA has been somewhat caught for its cyber-espionage (even if the report on German spying is not confirmed, other USA espionage efforts have recently been publicly confirmed), it may decide that additional disclosure of its espionage is its best move to attempt to placate the wrath of the Germans and other Europeans. If so, this would also seem to pave the way for additional military disclosures to the Europeans.

And, presuming that this latest espionage disclosure is true, this will truly upset Europe’s relationship with the USA. No matter what the USA does it will not truly be able to erase what it allegedly did from the memories of the German/European leadership. The USA seemingly has established its hypocrisy for Europe. This will not bode well for the USA (cf. Daniel 11:39).
