Bowl With Christos Reference

A bowl, dating to between the late 2nd century B.C. and the early 1st century A.D., is engraved with what may be the world’s first known reference to Christ. The engraving reads, “DIA CHRSTOU O GOISTAIS,” which has been interpreted to mean either, “by Christ the magician” or, “the magician by Christ.”

Earliest reference describes Christ as ‘magician’
Bowl dated between late 2nd century B.C. and the early 1st century A.D.

Discovery Channel – Oct 1, 2008

A team of scientists led by renowned French marine archaeologist Franck Goddio recently announced that they have found a bowl, dating to between the late 2nd century B.C. and the early 1st century A.D., that is engraved with what they believe could be the world’s first known reference to Christ.

If the word “Christ” refers to the Biblical Jesus Christ, as is speculated, then the discovery may provide evidence that Christianity and paganism at times intertwined in the ancient world.

The full engraving on the bowl reads, “DIA CHRSTOU O GOISTAIS,” which has been interpreted by the excavation team to mean either, “by Christ the magician” or, “the magician by Christ.”

“It could very well be a reference to Jesus Christ, in that he was once the primary exponent of white magic,” Goddio, co-founder of the Oxford Center of Maritime Archaeology, said.

He and his colleagues found the object during an excavation of the underwater ruins of Alexandria’s ancient great harbor. The Egyptian site also includes the now submerged island of Antirhodos, where Cleopatra’s palace may have been located.

Both Goddio and Egyptologist David Fabre, a member of the European Institute of Submarine Archaeology, think a “magus” could have practiced fortune telling rituals using the bowl. The Book of Matthew refers to “wisemen,” or Magi, believed to have been prevalent in the ancient world…

Goddio said, “It is very probable that in Alexandria they were aware of the existence of Jesus” and of his associated legendary miracles, such as transforming water into wine, multiplying loaves of bread, conducting miraculous health cures, and the story of the resurrection itself.

While not discounting the Jesus Christ interpretation, other researchers have offered different possible interpretations for the engraving, which was made on the thin-walled ceramic bowl after it was fired, since slip was removed during the process…

Fabre concluded, “It should be remembered that in Alexandria, paganism, Judaism and Christianity never evolved in isolation. All of these forms of religion (evolved) magical practices that seduced both the humble members of the population and the most well-off classes.”

“It was in Alexandria where new religious constructions were made to propose solutions to the problem of man, of God’s world,” he added. “Cults of Isis, mysteries of Mithra, and early Christianity bear witness to this.”

The bowl is currently on public display in the exhibit “Egypt’s Sunken Treasures” at the Matadero Cultural Center in Madrid, Spain, until November 15. source: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26972493/.

The main reason that this may be important is because many skeptics actually deny that Jesus ever existed–even though there is substantial ancient documentary evidence for His existence.

Sadly, those in Alexandria were among the first to make some profession of  Christ while adopting pagan rituals and other practices associated with Mithraism that many seem to consider are part of “mainstream Christianity”.

Wat Abortion

The Vatican, in the past couple of US presidential elections, has become more vocal about who it does not support.  Basically, in the last election and the present election, Vatican officials have been less than pleased that, when the Democratic candidates for either president (John Kerry last election) or vice president (Joseph Biden this election) speak, the Democrats favor abortion.

Here is a fairly bold statement from a US Vatican official:

Vatican official attacks U.S. Democrats as “party of death”

Reuters – Oct 1, 2008
Vatican officials seldom single out political leaders who differ with the Church on issues like abortion rights or embryonic stem cell research. But now that the Vatican’s highest court is led by an American, the former St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke, we can expect things to get more explicit in Vatican City — at least when when it comes to U.S. politics.Burke, who was named prefect of the Vatican’s Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature in June, told the Italian Catholic newspaper Avvenire that the U.S. Democratic Party risked “transforming itself definitively into a party of death for its decisions on bioethical issues.” He then attacked two of the party’s most high profile Catholics — vice presidential candidate Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — for misrepresenting Church teaching on abortion.

Pelosi drew U.S. bishops’ scorn for saying in a television interview last month that the Church itself had long debated when human life begins. Biden is a practicing Catholic who also supports abortion rights and analysts have said he could help woo wavering Catholics into Obama’s fold...

Burke made headlines as archbishop of St. Louis for his public attacks on public figures who strayed from Catholic teaching. He suggested during the 2004 presidential campaign that Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, a Catholic, should be denied communion because of his views on abortion. Several bishops said at the time they would not give him communion and the media staked out churches where he attended Mass to see if he received it.

“Lately, I’ve noticed that other bishops are coming to this position,” Burke told Avvenire, which is owned by the Italian bishops’ conference.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, wrote a letter in 2004 to American bishops restating the Church position that a priest must refuse to distribute communion to a Catholic politician who supported abortion rights. But Burke lamented that the letter was never distributed. http://blogs.reuters.com/faithworld/2008/10/01/vatican-official-attacks-us-democrats-as-party-of-death/.

Of course, this is not the only time this year that Joseph Biden (at least indirectly, see Catholic Bishops Seem to Endorse McCain) and Nancy Pelosi (see CT Wrong, Nancy Pelosi Correct) have been condemned by any Catholic bishops.

But this has not seemed to change Joseph Biden.

In the vice-presidential debate last night, I specifically heard Joseph Biden speak in favor on the Roe v. Wade US Supreme Court decision that decided that US States could not prohibit abortion.  Sarah Palin took the opposing view last night (although I only heard her state that it was bad decision as it violate States’ rights).

Sarah Palin
Sarah Palin, Vice Presidential Nominee

And while the Vatican does not quite come out and support the anti-abortion vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, they certainly do not come out against her like they do Joseph Biden.

But since it is pretty much a sure thing that if the Democrats do not win the White House that the Republicans will, it appears that the direct slam against the Democratic leaders is a least a tacit endorsement of the Republican ticket of Sarah Palin and John McCain.

Perhaps I should add that although we in the Living Church of God are against abortion, the Church of Rome has allowed it throughout its history, beginning in the early portion of the third century.

France Wants Greater EU Military

Nicolas Sarkozy, President of France
French President Nicolas Sarkozy

Nicolas Sarkozy, the president of France and the co-president of the Union of Mediterranean States (see Deal Leading to Psalm 83?) wants a stronger European military:

France Presses EU to Revamp Defense Structures
Deutsche Welle – Oct 1, 2008

EU defense ministers have kicked off a two-day meeting in France. The French would like to see member states overhaul the way they cooperate militarily. But is anyone lining up to salute?

As the defense ministers gathered in the French resort of Deauville, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who also holds the European Union’s revolving presidency, set the tone for what he hopes will be a historical summit.

“How can Europe be a political power that speaks with a strong voice if it isn’t in a position to defend itself or take the appropriate measures to enact its defense policies,” Sarkozy asked rhetorically.

The main aim of the summit, which runs until Thursday, Oct. 2, is to create a rapid reaction force of 50-60,000 soldiers that could be deployed in the interests of EU security.

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana also thinks the time has come for radical changes.

“One of the most important things the European Union has to do is to act in real time,” Solana said ahead of the summit. “If you have a crisis or a political problem in the world and you don’t deal with it rapidly, you waste time, money and the lives, probably, of people.”

France would also like to see the creation of a general chief of staff office in Brussels to oversee the force…Brussels and Moscow were in a clinch over Russian’s military incursions into Georgia…

Nonetheless, the Maastricht Treaty stipulates that the bloc have a common defense and security policy, and European military missions have proved successful in recent years.

Most notably, a 1,800-person EUFOR force has successfully taken over responsibility for maintaining peace in Kosovo from its UN predecessor. Backers of reform hope that could help overcome resistance by some member states, particularly Britain, to further integrating the EU’s military capabilities.

Back to NATO

Reform backers stress that a European force would be a supplement to, and not a replacement for, NATO. And NATO may be France’s best card for pushing through changes.http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,2144,3683351,00.html

Russia’s attitude towards the EU and Georgia will undoubtedly have a role in the EU deciding that it has no choice but to have a much stronger military (see also European Fears and Military Ramifications).

Essentially, by combining European military forces, American military technologies (which it receives especially as part of NATO), its developing Galileo system (see EU Approves Galileo For Military Use), and what it will develop on its own (possibly also including from the Large Hadron Collider, see Why Prophecy? Because the World Will NOT End Next Week from the Large Hadron Collider), in several years the Europeans will become a major military power.

Especially as the USA finds that it cannot afford to have as much relative military might as it now has.

People Who Make Predictions Need to Be Sure that the Bible Supports those Predictions

COGwriter

In August 2008, in response to my posts related to him, James Malm contacted me and issued me a challenge (see James Malm Challenges COGwriter).

He had at his website and in one or more emails to me, insisted that the abomination should be set up by yesterday.  Here is some of what he wrote:

While the timing of this Festival is determined by the observance of the New Moon, the sixth day of this Festival is expected on 12 Apr 2012. Counting back from then, 1290 days, means that; the final false prophet we are awaiting, should be revealed around 30 Sep 2008 (Malm J. November 7, 2007 article titled “2008 in Prophecy).

Please, do not confuse me with R Weinland. I strongly disagree with most of what he says. For one thing I endeavour to provide scriptural backing for everything that I say. However I do say that 2008 is a critical year. As stated on the website I expect the Abomination (the man of sin) to be set up at the end of Sep and to go to the Holy Place within 75 days, triggering the occupation of Jerusalem. We shall know soon enough if I am correct! (Malm J. Email, December 2007)

I disagreed with James Malm in December 2007 (At Least Two Wrongly Claim Great Tribulation Will Begin in 2008) and also in 2008 (One More Pope?).

So, he issued me the following challenge:

Dear Robert
Yes, you did make a prediction. You predicted that nothing will happen. If something does then you will be the false prophet. Will YOU issue an admission that YOU were a false prophet? I will make a deal with you. If I have your promise to do so, then I will promise to issue a public admission that I have been wrong! Let me know!…James Malm

My response to him was:

If I am wrong, I will clearly admit it. So yes we have a deal. I hope that you will be clear if you were wrong.

(The challenge was also a news item titled James Malm Challenges COGwriter.)

Unlike Ronald Weinland (see Ronald Weinland Wrong, Again), James Malm never claimed to be God’s prophet and did issue an apology:

I have not seen any news concerning the possible empowerment of Pope Benedict on 30 Sep…

I have NEVER claimed to be an Apostle or Prophet or any such thing.  I have never claimed to speak with the Authority of God or His Christ in this matter.  I have continually encouraged everyone to challenge my conclusions and to question, to study, to use God’s Spirit and follow where it leads, to think and to learn and grow.
The truly important thing is to point all people toward Almighty God.  May His will be done!  I am making my mistakes and trying to learn and grow as well, I do feel that I should apologize for my mistakes and own up to them. When I make mistakes I may influence others wrongly.  I need to set things right and apologize for my shortcomings

I had trusted that when things did not happen by yesterday, that he would be more careful in the future.  And while he seems to feel that he is, in the same post yesterday, he also wrote:

The only possible years for the 1335 days to begin in the forseeable future are 2008 or 2009…

In short the last day of the 1335 days may occur on the day before Pentecost, making the Feast of Pentecost representative of a NEW BEGINNING IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD.  If this is true, and I shall study it further; the final False Prophet will be set up on 3 Oct 2009! (Malm. J. 2008 and Prophecy, 30 SEP 08).

I will go on record once again and state that the 1335 days cannot begin in 2008 nor in 2009.  The Bible and world events simply do not allow for this.  Do not be misled by him or anyone else on this (Why Be Concerned About False and Heretical Leaders?)

I have probably pointed out about ten times this year that the predictions of many related to 2008 were in error.  This is based upon checking the predictions with the Bible and world events.

As I have written many times, however, while the end will come, the Great Tribulation CANNOT BEGIN BEFORE 2012.

Those interested in learning more about why may wish to read the following articles:

VS.
Ronald Weinland Says His Books and His Interpretations of the Bible Are What He Wants Potential Supporters to Study. The COGwriter Site Instead Urges Those Interested in Him and End-Time Prophecies to Spend More Time Checking His Writings with the Bible.

COGwriter

Ronald Weinland’s website showed that he was going to give his Feast of Trumpets sermon in Waikoloa, HI, yesterday.

According to what he wrote in August, the 1335 days of Daniel 12 were to begin yesterday:

Everything is rapidly moving forward, and on Trumpets of this year we will have entered the final 1335 days before the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of the government of God over all the earth.

This is the second time this year that Ron Weinland said that the 1335 days of Daniel 12 were to begin.  He originally claimed it began on February 2, 2008 and that the USA would be nuked by Pentecost 2008 (June 8, 2008, see Ronald Weinland Said By Mid-June, COGwriter Says Not Before 2012).

As I wrote in February 2008 (see Ronald Weinland Announced When He Claims Jesus Will Return), the 1335 days did not start then.  As everyone knows, the USA was not nuked between February 2008 and June 2008.

What is most amazing about Ronald Weinland is that when his predictions related to the 1335 days (Ronald Weinland Announced When He Claims Jesus Will Return), the 1290 days (Ronald Weinland Should Realize that the 1290 Days of Daniel Did Not Begin Today), and the 1260 days (Ronald Weinland Again Calls for Death) did not come to pass (the biblically required events simply did not happen then), he claimed that the events that were to occur were spiritual and that only people like him could see them.

He even promised to publicly apologize and admit he was a false prophet if he was wrong.  Notice what he said on The Edge radio interview on December 15, 2007:

The proof is coming…

If it doesn’t come to pass…starting in April, then I’m nothing but a false prophet…

Beginning in April, its important that people believe it…

The reality is if it doesn’t happen, then you’re just false…I’ll acknowledge my error, my wrong, if I’m wrong…

Yet instead of keeping his word, Ronald Weinland has convinced himself that he simply misunderstood something and that he is still somehow God’s prophet.

Ronald Weinland then later he changed when the days began.  I presume that once again he will claim that the events of the 1335 days, the 1290 days, and the 1260 days this time will be spiritual as well.

Recall that the Bible teaches:

21 “And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?’– 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him (Deuteronomy 18:21-22).

Ronald Weinland was wrong every time so far and is wrong now.

Those who really want to know what the Bible teaches will happen related to the the 1335 days, the 1290 days, and the 1260 days of Daniel should read the following articles:

Who is the King of the North? Is there one? Do biblical and Roman Catholic prophecies point to the same leader? Should he be followed? Who will be the King of the North discussed in Daniel 11? Is a nuclear attack prophesied to happen to the English-speaking peoples of the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand? When do the 1335 days, 1290 days, and 1260 days (the time, times, and half a time) of Daniel 12 begin? When does the Bible show that economic collapse will affect the United States?
Is There A Future King of the South? Some no longer believe there needs to be. Might Egypt, Islam, Iran, Arabs, or Ethiopia be involved? What does the Bible say?
