LCG: Rapture or Return from Feast Set for 21 October 2011?

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Harold Egbert Camping

COGwriter

According to earliest statements from Harold Camping, Jesus will return and the world will end on October 21, 2011.  Yet, we in the Living Church of God have a very different view as our commentary today points out:

Commentary: October 21: Raptured? Or Returning from God’s Feast?
By Wyatt Ciesielka | Thursday, October 20, 2011
Another rapture prediction is making news headlines. Will we soon witness those who are not “presently saved” being “annihilated together with the whole physical world” (familyradio.com, “What Happened on May 21?”)? Some believe that Christ’s return and the rapture will occur on October 21, 2011. Others speculate about December 21, 2012. However, there are many faithful Christians who–instead of worrying about October 21 supposedly being the end of the world–have joyfully been celebrating God’s annual Feast of Tabernacles (Leviticus 23:34) and Last Great Day(Leviticus 23:36). Is there a connection between observing God’s annual Holy Days and not being misled by false teachers or doomsday prophets? Yes, there is!
.
Instead of becoming distracted by false prophets, true Christians look at actual prophetic milestones revealed in Scripture. By doing so, they understand that while we are rapidly approaching the end of the age and the return of Jesus Christ, there remain more than three-and-a-half years of prophesied events that must first take place before Christ will return. So, instead of worrying that October 21 may be “the end of the world,” true Christians are persevering in preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God, and in observing God’s annual Holy Days! This is part of teaching—and living—according to the entire word of God (Isaiah 8:20)…
.
Immediately following the Feast of Tabernacles is the Last Great Day. This Holy Day, which falls on October 20 in 2011, pictures the time when the countless billions who have lived but were not part of the First Resurrection will be given their opportunity to come to repentance (Leviticus 23:36; John 7:37-38). At that wonderful time, people will have a choice to love and to obey God’s way, or to be blotted out of existence forever (Revelation 20:12-15). It was on the evening beginning the Last Great Day when Jesus Christ gave His powerful sermon beginning in John 7:37.

On October 21, 2011, instead of the “rapture” or the “end of the world” most of the faithful in the Living Church of God will start to return from the annual Fall Holy Days.  This is certain.  And it is certain that Jesus will not return for many years.

Libya is apparently transitioning and now reports confirm that its Colonel Qaddafi has been killed:

Reports Say Gadhafi Killed in Libya

Provisional government officials in Libya say former leader Moammar Gadhafi has died after being wounded during a battle for control of the town of Sirte. The reports have not been independently confirmed.http://www.voanews.com/english/news/Reports-Say-Gadhafi-Killed-in-Libya-132230473.html

LIBYA LIVE: Gadhafi killed as his hometown falls

His killing confirms my long-held position that Muammar al-Gaddafi would NOT be the final King of the South of Bible prophecy.  He, himself, acted like he wanted to be.  He once was hailed as the “king of kings of Africa,” which, to me at least, indicated that he wanted to be the King of the South.

Libya itself is mentioned specifically in Bible prophecy (Daniel 11:40-43) and it will support the final King of the South.  This is likely to be a caliph-type Imam Mahdi, that many in the Arab & Islamic world will also support. And that leader will relatively soon rise up (though some Arab nations may likely have several “interim” and/or semi-permanent leaders first as I have written in the past).

LGD: Do the Orthodox Understand it?

Until  sunset October 20, 2011  it is a time known as the Last Great Day.

We in the Living Church of God believe this day pictures the time of the Great White Throne judgment of Revelation 20 and that God will ultimately offer salvation to all who never truly understood the offer:

“The Last Great Day features the great judgment that will occur at the end of the millennial reign of Jesus Christ on earth (John 7:37; Leviticus 23:36, 39, 33-34; Revelation 20:11-12)…With a physical human birth, there must first be “begettal” (by the male), and “conception” (by the female). With a spiritual birth, there must first be a spiritual begettal and conception. Then, after a period of “spiritual gestation” or spiritual growth (2 Peter 3:18), true Christians will someday experience a literal spiritual “birth,” thereby becoming immortal children of God. We will literally be born again at the resurrection as Christ Himself was, “declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead” (Romans 1:4)…The “Last Judgment” Age (called the “Great White Throne Judgment”) in which all who have ever lived—yet who died in sin and ignorance of God’s Truth and His way of life—will be resurrected to a physical life and will have the Word of God opened to their understanding (Revelation 20:11-14; Matthew 10:15; 11:21-24; 12:41-42; Ezekiel 37:1-14)” (Official Statement of Fundamental Beliefs. LCG, 2004).

Interestingly, some among the Eastern Orthodox seem to believe something similar.  Orthodox Bishop Timothy Ware (who is now called Bishop Kallistos) wrote:

“What exactly is the condition of souls in the period between death and the Resurrection of the Body at the Last Day? Here Orthodox teaching is not entirely clear…The majority would be inclined to say that the faithful departed do not suffer at all. Another school holds that perhaps they suffer, but if so, their suffering is of a purificatory but not an expiratory character. Yet a third group would prefer to leave the whole question entirely open: let us avoid detailed formulation about the life after death” (Ware, p.255).

“There is no terrorism in the Orthodox doctrine of God…several of the Fathers have none the less believed that in the end all will be reconciled to God. It is heretical to say that all must be saved, for this is to deny free will; but it is a legitimate hope that all may be saved. Until the Last Day come, we must not despair of anyone’s salvation, but must long and pray for the reconciliation of all without exception” (Ware, p. 262).

It is possible that Origen of Alexandria’s writings (he is also considered to have been Eastern Orthodox) may have had some influence upon the position that Timothy Ware took. Specifically, noted historian K.S. Latourette observed this about Origen:

Origen taught that ultimately all the spirits who have fallen away from God will be restored to full harmony with Him. This can come about only with their cooperation, for they have freedom to accept or reject the redemption wrought in Christ. Before full restoration they will suffer punishment, but that punishment is intended to be educative, to purge them from the imperfections brought by their sin. After the end of the present age and its world another age will come, so Origen believed, in which have been born again will continue to grow and the unrepentant will be given further opportunity for repentance (Latourette K.S. A History of Christianity, Volume 1, Beginnings to 1500. Harper Collins, San Francisco, 1975, p.151).

Andreas Andreopoulos (Eastern Orthodox) wrote:

Gregory does not accept the restoration of all and the subsequent forgiveness of all as an inescapable necessity. Nobody will be saved without going through repentance, cleansing and forgiveness, and his view of the apokatastasis is merely the belief that everyone will be able to see truth as it is at the end, and everyone will be given the chance to repent…The restoration of all however, a valid possibility according to the Church, although not a doctrine, has a special place in the hopes of saints who pray for the redemption of their enemies, and it expresses our hope for the charity of God. Possibly the honorable silence expresses this hope, which in spite of the danger of determinism, becomes almost a certainty in this light: If even one human being is able to forgive and pray for the salvation of the entire cosmos, wouldn’t God’s providence find a way to make it happen? (Andreopoulos A. Eschatology and final restoration (apokatastasis) in Origen, Gregory of Nyssa and Maximos the Confessor. Theandros an Online Journal of Orthodox Christian Theology and Practice, Volume 1, number 3, Spring 2004. http://www.theandros.com/restoration.html viewed 06/08/09)

Orthodox Archpriest George Florovsky observed:

St. Gregory of Nyssa anticipated a kind of universal conversion of souls in the afterlife, when the Truth of God will be revealed and manifested with compelling evidence…

God respects human freedom, as St. Irenaeus once said…The Last Judgment remains a mystery.

(Florovsky G. The last things and the last events. Originally written no later than 1979. Missionary Leaflet # E95h Holy Protection Russian Orthodox Church. Los Angeles. Editor: Bishop Alexander (Mileant) http://www.fatheralexander.org/booklets/english/last_events_florovsky_e.htm#n3 viewed 06/07/09).

Orthodox escatology remains a mystery to the Orthodox as they tend to admit that they do not understand much of it–but many of them do realize that God’s plan of salvation is not limited the way that most Protestants seem to believe that it is. Yet, although the Orthodox do not observe the Last Great Day, remnants of its meaning seem to sometimes show up in their past and current theology.

Of course, we in LCG believe that the Last Great Day pictures that God will offer salvation to all who never truly had an opportunity in this age.  It is a view that many among the Eastern Orthodox held throughout history, though groups like Protestants have not tended to hold this biblical belief.

Austerity Protests in Greece

Greek Riots, 2008

At least one economist suspects that civil unrest, and possibly civil war, may erupt in Greece:

Many in Greece and other parts of Europe are not happy about austerity programs designed to deal with their national debt situation.  On September 5, 2010, I warned:

Austerity measures in Europe will likely cause civil unrest. And places other than Greece are likely to be affected.

Also, in my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect, I discuss the possibility of civil unrest and/or civil war breaking out in Europe. Here are a couple of captions from the book about that:

Some believe that God will punish the nominal Catholics with civil unrest and war in Europe. As there already has been civil unrest in Europe (and according to secular sources, more is expected), it is possible that the following (to some degree) also may come to pass:..

Monk Hilarion (15th century): “The people of the peninsula of Europe will suffer by needless wars…”

Brother Louis Rocco (19th century): “All over Europe there will rage terrible civil wars…A Great Monarch will arise after a period of terrible wars and persecutions in Europe.”

Some believe this civil unrest will result in the rise of a militaristic leader who will quell that particular violence, establish a new religious order, and reign with a pope who will perform miracles…

One interesting 15th century Catholic prophecy foretells a time when a “great prince” will rise up. “All Germany” will apparently convert to the ecumenical religion, and then massive conversions in “all countries” “will happen quickly…

The descriptions of the Great Monarch/Prince in many ways parallel the description of one the Bible refers to as the “prince” in Daniel 9:26–27, final “King of the North” in Daniel 11:27–45…

Furthermore, it may partially because of civil war/unrest/riots that a de-Islamization of Europe will take place. The situation in Europe will change and the leader known biblically as the ten-horned Beast or the final King of the North will rise up.  Specifically, I suspect that protests and civil unrest in Europe will be factors in the actual rise the Beast, as he will be a militaristic leader cf. Revelation 13:4.

As Jesus said:

37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:36-37)

Troubling protests are a sign to watch.

Last Great Day Begins at Sunset

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Straight Path in Tobago
A slightly difficult uphill and narrow way in Tobago

COGwriter

At sunset October 19, 2011 begins a time known as the Last Great Day. (The seven day Feast of Tabernacles is immediately followed by the eighth day, which began last night at sunset.)  It lasts until sunset on October 20, 2011.

Christians normally call this the ”Last Great Day” based on these statement from Jesus in John 7:37-38:

On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

It is on that last day that those predestined in this age will be the praise to Christ’s glory to those on the earth in a way that has not happened before.

Jesus was clear that only a few will find this way in this age:

23 Then one said to Him, “Lord, are there few who are saved?” And He said to them, 24 Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able (Luke 13:23-24).

14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it (Matthew 7:14).

So only some few will be called in this age. And there is an “age to come” (Matthew 12:32) where even infamous sinners will have an opportunity (cf. Matthew 10:15;11:22).

According to an old, but probably modified in the 4th century document, it seems that Polycarp observed the Feast of Tabernacles in the second century including the Last Great Day:

I will give the narration in order, thus coming down to the history of the blessed Polycarp…

So also he pursued the reading of the Scriptures from childhood to old age, himself reading in church; and he recommended it to others, saying that the reading of the law and the prophets was the forerunner of grace, preparing and making straight the ways of the Lord, that is the hearts, which are like tablets whereon certain harsh beliefs and conceptions that were written before perfect knowledge came, are through the inculcation of the Old Testament, and the correct interpretation following thereupon, first smoothed and levelled, that, when the Holy Spirit comes as a pen, the grace and joy of the voice of the Gospel and of the doctrine of the immortal and heavenly Christ may be inscribed on them. And he said that they could not otherwise receive the impression of the seal which is given by baptism and engrave and exhibit the form conveyed in it, unless the wax were first softened and filled the deep parts. So also he thought that the hearts of the hearers ought to be softened and yield to the impress of the Word. For he said that it unfolded and opened, like closed doors, the minds of recent comers; and accordingly the prophet was bidden by God, Cry out mightily and spare not, Raise thy voice as a trumpet. What must one say, when even He that was gentler than all men so appeals and cries out at the feast of Tabernacles? For it is written; And on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried saying, If any man thirsteth, let him come to Me and drink. (Pionius, Life of Polycarp (1889) from J. B. Lightfoot, The Apostolic Fathers, vol. 3.2, pp.488-506.)

The Living Church of God states this about the eighth day of the feast:

Old Testament meaning

…Adjacent to the Feast of Tabernacles, this eighth day is considered a separate Feast.
(Leviticus 23:36, 39)

New Testament meaning

Pictures the coming “Great White Throne Judgment” at which all of humanity not previously called will have the chance to hear the True Gospel and accept salvation. [The Holy Days]

Most of the small groups that observe the Feast of Tabernacles and the eight day that follows it are in basic agreement with the statements quoted from the Living Church of God.

Here is some of what the late Herbert W. Armstrong taught about the Last Great Day:

This eighth day, technically a separate feast, is called “the last day, that great day of the feast” (John 7:37).

What does this final holy day represent?

Notice what Jesus preached about on that day: “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink . . . out of his belly [innermost being] shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive . . .)” (John 7:37-39).

This was Jesus’ sermon giving the meaning of the last great day!

Now turn to Revelation 20. After the Millennium, what happens? A resurrection! The dead stand before God. This couldn’t include true Christians today, as they will appear before the judgment seat when Christ returns. It couldn’t refer to those converted during the Millennium. They have already inherited the Kingdom during the Millennium, after living out a normal life-span. Those in this resurrection must be those who died in ignorance in past ages! They are not brought to life until after the Millennium (Revelation 20:5).

This is that judgment day mentioned in Matthew 10: 15. It is a time when Gentiles who died in ignorance will be given an opportunity to receive salvation. Ezekiel 16:53-55 makes this very plain. Even those in Israel who died in their sins will be given their first opportunity to understand the truth of God and His way (Ezekiel 37). The prophet wrote that God would pour out His Spirit on those resurrected (verse 14). This is precisely the salvation that Jesus mentioned in His sermon on that great day of the feast in the autumn of AD 30.

This eighth day, which immediately follows the seven days of the Feast of Tabernacles, pictures the completion of the plan of redemption. It is just prior to the new heaven and the new earth. All parents and children, young and old will be resurrected. Notice that the “book of life” typifying salvation is opened (Revelation 20:12). Revelation presents the final view of the “judgment day” as the present material heaven and earth are perishing and the faithful are receiving their eternal reward at the throne of Christ. The wicked those who disobey are seen perishing in the lake of fire! What a marvelous plan! All will have an equal opportunity (Armstrong HW. Pagan Holidays–or God’s Holy Days—Which?, booklet).

Isaiah prophesied how long the White Throne Judgment period would last. During this time Christ and the resurrected saints will rule. It is the time of the second resurrection. The earth will be as peaceful and productive as the Millennium itself. Children who died will live again for one hundred years, building character through the power of God’s Holy Spirit. Older people who had died without knowing God’s plan for them will also be resurrected to live for one hundred years. The close of the one-hundred-year White Throne Judgment is pictured by John in Revelation 20:11-12…100 years of testing…Isa. 65:20. (Bible Correspondence Course, Lesson 39. 1954, 1965 Edition).

A major reason that I became part of the old Worldwide Church of God and now the Living Church of God is that in addition to proving all things from the Bible, I truly believe that since “God is love” (1 John 4:16) that He has a plan of salvation that will ultimately result in everyone being called and nearly every one who ever lived being saved.

Actually this was a belief of possibly most who professed Christ until apparently sometime in the 6th century, which in Roman circles was somewhat replaced with the purgatory doctrine.  Three must read articles about these matters are Hope of Salvation: How the COGs differ from most Protestants, Universal Salvation? Harold Camping Again to be Proven Wrong in a Couple of Days

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

(Above by Louis Crespo)

COGwriter

While this page tends to focus more on those once affiliated with the Church of God, there are some other religious leaders that can impact it. One of those may be Harold Camping.

According to Harold Camping and other supporters of his Family Radio, Jesus will return on and the world will end on October 21, 2011.  Here is what he wrote in his We are Almost There! book:

Significantly, the number 17 links perfectly to the fact of the rapture because spiritually, the number 17 signifies heaven. Moreover, the number 2 (second month) spiritually identifies with those who have been commissioned to bring the Gospel. Is it not amazing that they will be raptured on the 17th day of the second month? Is that coincidental? We also have learned that the last day of the earth’s existence, October 21, 2011, is the 23rd day of the seventh month of the Biblical calendar. The number 23 normally signifies God’s wrath being poured out. The number 7 (seventh month) signifies the perfect fulfillment of God’s purposes. Could this also be coincidental, that the final completion of God’s punishment on the unsaved occurs in the seventh month on a day that features the number 23, which is a number that completely identifies with God’s wrath, thus signifying God’s perfect wrath on the unsaved?  (p. 61-62).

So, based on his proclamations, the world has only a couple of days to exist. Of course, that is not possible, so in a couple of days, his remaining followers will again see that his prediction was wrong (like they did about his predictions for 1994, and the one for May, 21, 2011).

Also notice:

Harold Camping says the end of the world is definitely Oct. 21

Washington Post – Oct 14, 2011

Harold Camping, the Family Radio evangelist who wrongly predicted doomsday back in May, says the real end of the world is now Oct. 21.

In a message on his Web site, Camping declares that next Friday, “at this point, looks like it will be the final end of everything.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/blogpost/post/harold-camping-says-the-end-of-the-world-is-definitely-oct-21/2011/10/14/gIQAThnEkL_blog.html

Now what that October 21, 2011 date based upon?

In my view, mainly his own private interpretations and imaginations.

Many of the events Jesus and the prophets spoke of are still for the future (cf. Daniel 7,9, 11:31-44; Luke 21; Mark 13). Notice something that Jesus said:

31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32)

The truth is that the events Jesus said must happen have not happened (cf. Matthew 24:15-22, 29-35) and not all of them can for some time.

Harold Camping’s repeated errors reminded me of the following scripture concerning the “handwriting on the wall”:

24 Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.

25 “And this is the inscription that was written:

MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

26 This is the interpretation of each word. Mene: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; 27 Tekel: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; 28 Peres: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.” 29 Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold around his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. (Daniel 5:24-29, NKJV)

While October 21, 2011 is not the end of the world, in a sense it will be an end day against the supporters of that date. Notice how I believe that October 21, 2011 supporters should view the “handwriting on the wall”:

Mene: God has again allowed you to number your foolishness.

Mene: Within days your October 21, 2011 date is finished.

Tekel: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting.

Peres: Your group will likely become divided.

We in the Living Church of God believe:

19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. (2 Peter 1:19-20, KJV)

Now, Peter is warning that unlike improper human reasoning, prophetic scriptures were not private interpretations. October, 21, 2011 and many of the numbers that have been associated with it are not biblical prophecies, but improper private interpretations of scripture.

While we in believe that we have “a more sure word of prophecy”, it is because we believe that many prophetic scriptures are literal and should often be understood that way. Sadly, those into their own private interpretations, and misunderstand the Bible and the Holy Days, have another view.

Because he prefers his own imaginations to the truth of the Bible, Harold Camping seems to load one misleading calculation onto other misleading information to get to the wrong answer. He should not be listened to by those that actually believe the Bible. The heavenly signs in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 have not happened, and they must happen first according to Jesus before He can return.

So why cover Harold Camping?

A couple of reasons.

It remains my view that when Jesus does not come on May 21, 2011, hopefully the warnings to his followers will finally sink in. And some may remember that Jesus said,

11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. (Matthew 24:11)

The iniquity of false prophets such as Harold Camping, Ronald Weinland (who still claims that Jesus will come on May 27, 2012, and others will turn various people off about prophecy–and that is one reason that I feel it is better to denounce them in advance–this type of denunciation shows that those who actually rely on biblical prophecy do not have to be deceived by false ones who simply only claim to (cf. Matthew 24:24).

Notice also the following:

But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber. (2 Peter 2:1-3)

Now, notice that Harold Camping is causing atheists to rejoice:

Christians are giving atheists yet another reason to celebrate the end of the world–Harold Camping’s prediction that the end will come on October 21st, 2011.  His fourth attempt to predict the Rapture has inspired Minnesota atheists to throw the party of parties–”Rapture II: We’re Still Here.”  The party will be held on the 22nd as the original venue was not able to be rented on the 21st.  http://www.goddiscussion.com/81044/minnesota-atheists-have-a-reason-to-harold-campings-october-21st-doomsday-with-a-rapture-ii-benefit-party/

Harold Camping has caused part of the way of truth to be blasphemed.

Despite false predictions, Jesus will return. And we are to look forward to His return as the Apostle Peter wrote. Jesus will return no earlier than 2018 (and likely later) as certain biblically-required steps have not yet happened (Daniel 9:27; cf. Matthew 24:15,21,29-30).

When God’s true servants proclaim the truth about prophetic events, people are likely to point to false predictions (supposedly, but not really, from the Bible) and scoff, though God still wants people to repent (2 Peter 3:3-9). This scoffing is one of the dangers of the October 21, 2011 date that will soon be proven false.

Those who are interested in the truth about Harold Camping, Ronald Weinland (who also claims to be one of the two witnesses), Mayan prophecies, and when the Bible shows that Jesus can return, may wish to study the following articles:

Keeping the Feast of Tabernacles in the 21st Century

The Feast of Tabernacles is mostly over for 2011.

As many who are readers of this page at this time are not at the Feast of Tabernacles now, I thought a series on the sites we attended might be of interest. This is part three of the three-part series.

In 2000 (technically the last year of the 20th century), my family went to Jamaica for the Feast of Tabernacles. This was the first year that the Living Church of God (with that name) had a feast site there. About 100 attended that year. Although we took a lot of pictures, I only found the following one:

Banana Boat in Jamaica, 2000

In 2001, we went to Tugan, Australia for the feast. Probably around 300 attended that year. This may have been the favorite feast site for our older two sons (they hope the Feast in Australia will be in this area again). Below is the building services were at, and a park photo.

Church Members at the Feast of Tabernacles in Tugan, Australia 2001

In 2002, we went to Barbados for the feast. 70-100 attended. A hurricane almost hit and added additional excitement to this feast site.

Members at the 2002 Feast of Tabernacles in Barbados in the Living Church of God

In 2003 and 2004, we went to Kauai, Hawaii for the feast. About 200-500 attended. We stayed in different places each time. There was teen bowling activity (1st photo) and Dr. Jeff Fall spoke (2nd photo).

In 2005, we went to Clearwater Beach, Florida. Around 800 attended. A hurricane threatened, but did not cause problems until the day after the feast ended. That resulted in a hotel we were to stay being closed and caused a variety of problems, but we got through them.

In 2006, we went to Antigua, Guatemala for the feast. We were the only non-Latin family to attend, so translations were provided for us. Also, since I do not speak Spanish, my two sermons (the only live sermons not in Spanish there) were translated for the attendees.

In 2007, we went to Crown Point, Tobago. Tobago is a small island and is part of the country known as Trinidad and Tobago. At family day, two of our sons joined with the local church brethren to play cricket. I gave two or three sermonettes there.

Trinidad & Tobago Welcome Cricket Game in Tobago

In 2008, we went to Evian, France and I gave one sermonette (in English of course). In Evian, most LCG members stayed in the same complex and normally had our meals together.

In 2009, we were in Lihue, Kauai (again) for the feast:

In 2010, we went to Panama City, Florida for the feast:

In 2011, we went to Glenwood Springs, Colorado–which is where we should be today.

Marian Dogma of Perpetual Viriginity

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

COGWriter

Since Pope Benedict XVI mentioned that October is dedicated to Mary (see Pope Says Turn to Mary, Bible Says Turn to Jesus), perhaps it might make sense to look into one of the Marian dogmas that the Church of Rome now holds related to the “perpetual virginity” of Mary.  Of course, the Bible is clear that Mary conceived Jesus when she was a virgin, but Catholic dogma goes beyond that.

Does the Bible teach that Mary remained a virgin?  Does early apostolic tradition teach that Mary remained a virgin?  If not, where did this seemingly come from?

The Catholics of Rome and even many of the Protestant Reformers have believed in the idea of the perpetual virginity of Mary.

Notice:

Surprisingly, the Protestant reformers affirmed their belief in Mary’s perpetual virginity.  For example, Martin Luther’s (1483-1546) was true to the Catholic tradition when he wrote: “It is an article of faith that Mary is Mother of the Lord and still a virgin. . . . Christ, we believe, came forth from a womb left perfectly intact.”

The French reformer John Calvin (1509-1564) was not as profuse in his praise of Mary as Martin Luther, but he did not deny her perpetual virginity. The term he used most commonly in referring to Mary was “Holy Virgin.”

The Swiss reformer, Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531), wrote, on the  perpetual virginity of Mary: “I firmly believe that Mary, according to the words of the gospel as a pure Virgin brought forth for us the Son of God and in childbirth and after childbirth forever remained a pure, intact Virgin.”   Elsewhere Zwingli affirmed:  “I esteem immensely the Mother of God, the ever chaste, immaculate Virgin Mary; Christ was born of a most undefiled Virgin.” (Bacchiocchi S. “MARIOLOGY”. ENDTIME ISSUES NEWSLETTER No. 191, 2007).

But where did this come from?

Well, it did not come from the Bible. Here is some of what two Catholic-translations of scripture teach about Mary and her family:

25 And he knew her not till she brought forth her first born son: and called his name JESUS (Matthew 1:25, DRB).

55…Is not his mother the woman called Mary, and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Jude?  56 His sisters, too, are they not all here with us? (Matthew 13:55b-56a, NJB).

3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joseph, and Jude, and Simon? Are not also his sisters here with us? (Mark 6:3a, DRB)

So, perpetual virginity for Mary is not explicitly part of sacred scripture. Since Jesus was Mary’s first born son—the implication, which is confirmed in scripture, is that she had other sons.

While some have argued that the term for brothers in Matthew 13:55 may mean cousins, the Greek expressions for brothers (adephos) and sisters (adelphe) are what is in the Greek texts. The Greek terms in those verses do not mean cousins (Danker FW, ed. A Greek-Lexicon of the New Testament and other Early Christian Literature, 3rd ed. University of Chicago Press, Chicago, p. 18 ). The Greek terms that better convey “cousin” are suggenh/suggenes/anepsios (Biblesoft’s New Exhaustive Strong’s Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.). And those terms are the only ones that are translated as “cousin” in the Rheims New Testament (Luke 1:36 DRB; Colossians 4:10 DRB).  Mark 6:3 also uses the Greek expression for sisters (adelphe), and does not use the one that convey more distant kin like cousins. Thus, even Catholic translators seemingly admit that Jesus had brothers and sisters, and that cousin comes from different words.  If the terms in koine Greek clearly was understood to have meant cousins, then most of those who professed Christ and lived in the first century or so after His incarnation would have realized that.  But that was not their position.

Hence, since the Bible does not say Mary would remain a virgin and it shows that Jesus had brothers and sisters, there is no biblical reason to accept the doctrine of Mary’s perpetual virginity (but many still do).

Basically, scripture only says that she was a virgin UNTIL Jesus was born. All real Christians believe that Mary was a virgin when Jesus was conceived inside of her by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35) and that she remained a virgin until some time after Jesus was born (Matthew 1:25; 13:55-56).

Apparently, the earliest claim as to Mary’s so-called perpetual virginity comes from a false document known as the Protoevangelium of James (McNally, p. 73). Why is it false?

This “gospel” falsely claims to have been written by James in Jerusalem and in the first century (The Protoevangelium of James.  Translated by Alexander Walker. From Ante-Nicene Fathers, Vol. 8. Edited by Alexander Roberts, James Donaldson, and A. Cleveland Coxe. (Buffalo, NY: Christian Literature Publishing Co., 1886.) Revised and edited for New Advent by Kevin Knight. <http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0847.htm>). It states that a midwife checked, and found, intact proof of Mary’s viginity shortly after Jesus was born. The claims of its authorship and date of writing are both being claims scholars realize are false (The Infancy Gospel Of James; Alternate title: The Protovangelion.  Geoff Trowbridge’s Introduction. http://www.maplenet.net/~trowbridge/infjames.htm viewed 08/13/11; Kirby, Peter. “Infancy Gospel of James.” Early Christian Writings. 2011. 13 Aug. 2011 http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/infancyjames.html; Reid, George. “Apocrypha.” The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 1. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1907. 17 Aug. 2011 <http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01601a.htm>).

Thus, this perpetual virginity teaching seems to have started from false sources.

It may be of interest to understand that the idea of Mary being a perpetual virgin was denounced once it started to become popular. The Catholic Encyclopedia notes:

Antidicomarianites An Eastern sect which flourished about A.D. 200 to 400…The sect denied the formula “ever-Virgin Mary” used in the Greek and Roman Liturgies. The earliest reference to this sect appears in Tertullian, and the doctrines taught by them are expressly mentioned by Origen (Homilia in Lucam, III, 940). Certain Arians, Eudocius and Eunomius, were great supporters of the teaching. (Shipman, Andrew. “Antidicomarianites.” The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 1. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1907. Nihil Obstat. March 1, 1907. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York. 7 Oct. 2011 <http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01562a.htm>.)

…the Antidicomarianites, maintained that the “brethren” of Jesus were His uterine brothers the sons of Joseph and Mary (Bechtel, Florentine. “The Brethren of the Lord.” The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 2. Nihil Obstat. 1907. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John M. Farley, Archbishop of New York. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1907. 10 Dec. 2008 <http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02767a.htm> ).

That last article in The Catholic Encyclopedia also teaches that “St. Ambrose, St. Hilary, and St. Gregory of Tours” held positions similar to the Antidicomarianites. Furthermore, another article in The Catholic Encyclopedia states, “writers like Tertullian, Hevidius, and possibly Hegesippus disputed the perpetual virginity of Mary.Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma adds that the perpetual virginity of Mary was also denied in the “Early Church” by Eunomius, Jovian, Helvidus, and Bishop Bonosus of Sardica as well as Christians with practices some considered to be Jewish (Ott, p. 204).

The Greco-Roman “Saint Basil the Great” in the fourth century wrote:

“[The opinion that Mary bore several children after Christ] … is not against the faith; for virginity was imposed on Mary as a necessity only up to the time that she served as an instrument for the Incarnation. On the other hand, her subsequent virginity was not essential to the mystery of the Incarnation.” (Homilia in sanctam Christi generationem, PG 31:1468).

(Cited in Cleenewerck L. His Broken Body: Understanding and Healing the Schism Between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches (An Orthodox Perspective). Euclid University Consortium Press, Washington (DC), 2007, p. 409).

Therefore, the idea that from the beginning all believed that Mary was a “perpetual virgin” simply is without real merit.

It, however, seemed to become formalized in the sixth and seventh centuries:

The Fifth General Council (553) gives Mary the title of honour “perpetual virgin” (Ott, p. 206).

Mary conceived “without any detriment to her virginity, which remained inviolate even after his birth” (Council of the Lateran, 649). Although never explicated in detail, the Catholic Church holds as dogma that Mary was and is Virgin before, in and after Christ’s birth. (The Four Marian Dogmas. Catholic News Agency, http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/resource.php?n=424 viewed 08/26/11)

This dogma originated from a false source (a “gospel” that Saint James did not write). It was opposed after it started to become popular. Catholic saints scholars, and others opposed it. There is simply no evidence that it was taught by the apostles.

The dogma of the perpetual virginity of Mary is an innovation that is not from sacred scripture nor the true earliest traditions of the Christian church.  It is not something that should be taught today by those who believe that they are true to the faith of the Bible and the original apostles.

Occupy Wall Street, Barack Obama, and Troubles for the Last Days

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

COGwriter

The Occupy Wall Street protests have happened in many cities in the Western world and seem to represent a certain ideology:

Why is Occupy Wall Street Going Global?

‎The Atlantic – Christopher Alessi – 18 October 2011

The Occupy Wall Street protests that began in New York City a month ago gained worldwide momentum over the weekend, as hundreds of thousands of demonstrators in nine hundred cities protested corporate greed and wealth inequality…The unrest comes amid a mounting European sovereign debt crisis…In the United States, anger at Wall Street bankers seen as responsible for the global financial crisis–and at the government, for bailing out the banks with taxpayer money–is exacerbated by a persistently dismal job market….

President Barack Obama–who received sizable campaign contributions from Wall Street in 2008–sought to tap into the movement’s energy this weekend, gently lending it credence (Bloomberg).”The unemployed worker,” he said, “can rightly challenge the excesses of Wall Street without demonizing all who work there.”

What Occupy Wall Street Protesters Really Believe‎ Fox News

President Obama and the Democratic leadership are making a critical error in embracing the Occupy Wall Street movement…Our research shows clearly that the movement doesn’t represent unemployed America and is not ideologically diverse. Rather, it comprises an unrepresentative segment of the electorate that believes in radical redistribution of wealth, civil disobedience and, in some instances, violence.

While I do not agree with all the political shenanigans involving banks and banking bailouts, I believe that the main point of the protesters is class warfare. Many of the protesters apparently believe that they are entitled to assets that other people have accumulated. US President Barack Obama, in my view, has repeatedly encouraged class warfare through his rhetoric and so the “Occupy” movement is no surprise (I believe that if he is re-elected, that there is a good chance that Barack Obama will see protests turning increasingly violent in the future). In my view, while there are appropriate biblical provisions for debt relief (Deuteronomy 15:1-2), gleaning (Leviticus 19:10), helping the poor (1 Timothy 5:3-7; Deuteronomy 26:12-15, see also Is Third Tithe Still Valid Today?), and certain land distribution issues (Leviticus 25:8-17), what many of the protesters seem to want is unbiblical (cf Acts 5:4; Exodus 20:17). The reality is that producing more goods and services, from a carnal perspective, is economically what the USA needs. Protests generally speaking, do not do that. Covetousness, which is a lot of what I have heard related to the “Occupy” movement is not love, nor appropriate for real Christians:

5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. (Hebrews 13:5)

When I watched some o of the “Occupy Wall Street” protesters/leaders interviewed, the following sections of scripture came to mind:

1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! 6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. (2 Timothy 3:1-8) 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

We are living in the last days and at least some of the protesters seemed to be fulfilling much of the above. The London riots and the flash mobs in the USA this past summer also brought these verses to mind. The sorrows and troubles are just beginning (Matthew 24:5-8) and will get much worse (Matthew 24:21-22). I believe that class warfare and other protests will help weaken the USA and other Anglo-nations and may also be a factor in them being vulnerable to real warfare: invasion by the Beast. (I also suspect that protests and civil unrest in Europe will be factors in the actual rise the Beast, as he will be a militaristic leader cf. Revelation 13:4.) As Jesus said:

37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:36-37)

Troubling protests are a sign to watch.

USA’s South Hit by Drought and Floods

Monday, October 17th, 2011

COGwriter

Louisiana and Arkansas are having weather troubles:

Some southern farms hit by drought AND floods

Devastating twin disasters mean the area just west of the Mississippi River was one of the worst in the US to be a farmer…

Not only have Arkansas and Louisiana experienced both drought and flooding, but in some cases, so have individual farmers in those states. The cost of the bad weather could reach $1 billion. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44930942/ns/weather/

Many parts of the USA are suffering from drought (see also TW Reports on Oklahoma Drought) as are parts of Africa and other lands. Droughts and floods contribute to food shortages, higher food prices, and sometimes famines.

My 2009 book, 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect mentioned the following was about to happen:

Odd weather patterns result in food shortages and natural disasters. Matthew 24:7
The world is actually in a berserk transition, as the real age of peace is not yet here. It may be a period of chaos. It is the beginning of sorrows Matthew 24:8

Perhaps the record weather problems can serve as another wake-up call. As my book indicated, weather-related troubles with their related food issues, of course, are biblically expected:

7…And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:7-8).

8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

Now there is good news as ultimately, God’s kingdom will come and those issues will be gone:

16 They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; 17 for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. (Revelation 7:16-17)

And while that is true, a terrible hour of trial is coming first (Revelation 3:10), and the USA itself (as well as Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand also) will experience significant starvation in its land (cf. Ezekiel 5:15-17). Sadly, will also include Texas. And prior to that, we should expect to see higher food prices (cf. Revelation 6:5-6).
