Canada’s latest tariffs on USA goods are now in effect:

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion worth of US goods take effect

September 8, 2026

Canada struck back at President Donald Trump on Tuesday with tariffs in an escalating trade war with the U.S. The tariffs hit hundreds of American products, including steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics and farm equipment, at rates of 15%, 25% or 50%. Read more.

What to know:

  • The current trade war began after Trump returned to office and imposed a series of tariffs on Canadian goods despite having negotiated and repeatedly praised the North American trade agreement during his first term. Many of those tariffs violate the pact.
  • The outcome could resonate far beyond Canada, showing other governments whether a smaller U.S. ally can withstand Trump’s economic pressure. RBC Economics, the research arm of the Royal Bank of Canada, said the measures were unlikely to dent U.S. growth overall but could hit some businesses hard. https://apnews.com/newsletter/morning-wire/september-8-2026

Canada’s steep retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion in U.S. goods took effect just after midnight ET on Tuesday, extending the trade war between the two countries. …

Canada’s tariffs range from 15% to 50%. American milk, perfume, video game consoles, golf clubs, fishing rods, steel, aluminum, jackets and T-shirts will face 50% tariffs. Cheese, carpets and certain household appliances like stoves and air conditioners will be subject to 25% tariffs, and forklifts and industrial molds will face 15% tariffs. …

Economists say Canada’s tariffs could hit manufacturers in Midwestern states like Michigan and Indiana particularly hard, as well as dairy producers in Wisconsin and Vermont.

The levies were imposed in response to U.S. tariffs on Canadian milk, honey, hockey sticks, alcoholic beverages, plywood, down feathers, jewelry and other goods. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/canada-retaliatory-tariffs-us-goods-milk-perfume-golf-clubs-trump/

Canada expects problems:

Carney warns of tough times ahead in national address as retaliatory tariffs kick in

September 8, 2026

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney is warning Canadians that the country’s pivot away from the United States will come at a cost, but that the alternative would be far worse.

In a national video address set to be released Tuesday — hours after Canada’s retaliatory tariffs kicked in — Carney reiterated Canada’s plan to respond to the U.S. trade war by striking new trade deals with other countries to become less reliant on the U.S.

“We have everything we need to pivot and prosper,” Carney said.

“That pivot will come at a cost. There’s always a cost to action. But it doesn’t come close to the cost of standing still.” …

Carney said the aim is to come out stronger and more resilient so “no country can ever hold us hostage, and that we can live how we want to live.”

Carney cut off trade talks with the United States last month after the two sides couldn’t reach a deal before U.S. President Donald Trump’s deadline of levying a new round of 50 per cent tariffs on nearly $28 billion of Canadian goods.

In his video address, Carney reiterated claims he previously made that the U.S. tried to introduce measures to restrict Canada’s ability to trade with other countries, and the ability to promote and protect French language and culture. …

For nearly two years Trump has mused about turning Canada into the 51st U.S. state, lobbed taunts of referring to Carney as “governor” — and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau before him — and accused Canada more recently of wanting to be treated “like a state.”

In January 2025, before being sworn in for his second term, Trump ruled out using military force to annex Canada, but said he would consider using “economic force” to get Canada to become part of the U.S. https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/trumps-tariffs/article/carney-warns-of-tough-times-ahead-in-national-address-as-retaliatory-tariffs-kick-in/

Donald Trump’s bullying tactics against Canada have resulted in Canada taking steps that do not always seem to be in its best interest.

Canadian tariffs take effect as Trump threatens Bombardier

September 8, 2026

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. went into effect at midnight Tuesday, affecting hundreds of goods, including steel and aluminum, appliances and electronics and wood, pulp and paper products.

There are no reports of negotiations between the two countries. …

President Trump on Monday threatened Canadian aircraft maker Bombardier, posting on Truth Social that it must start building in the U.S. to access the American market. He also posted a map with a U.S. flag covering most of North America, as well as Iceland and islands in the Caribbean.

Trump on Tuesday morning will make remarks at a Steel Across America event, a project by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation that brings a steel beam from the South Tower of the World Trade Center to the White House. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/6075462-live-updates-trump-canada-tariffs-rnc-midterm-convention/

Trump trade rep says U.S. may impose more tariffs today, as Ottawa’s counter-tariffs take effect

September 8, 2026

The U.S. will consider imposing retaliatory tariffs on Canadian goods as early as today, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said.

Greer spoke briefly and exclusively to CBC News’s Katie Nicholson and Radio-Canada’s Louis Blouin this morning on his way into the USTR headquarters in Washington, D.C.

“We’ll see this afternoon,” Greer said in French when asked about the potential of a U.S. reaction to Canada’s latest move. https://www.cbc.ca/news/livestory/canada-u-s-retaliatory-tariffs-dollar-for-dollar-9.7331632

Yesterday, Donald Trump posted the following on his Truth Social account:

Iceland, Mexico, and others are not happy about this:

Iceland summons US ambassador after Trump post showing American flag covering island

September 8, 2026

Iceland’s government called in the U.S. ambassador on Monday after President Trump posted a map showing the Nordic nation blanketed by the American flag.

Trump, who has previously pushed to take over Greenland and Canada, posted an image to Truth Social of the American flag stretching across North America, Greenland, Iceland, Central America and the Caribbean, with the map labeled “United States of America.”

Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir summoned U.S. ambassador to Iceland Billy Long over the image, according to Icelandic public broadcaster RUV.

The foreign ministry told the outlet that officials made clear to Long, a former Missouri lawmaker and IRS commissioner who became ambassador in May, that Trump’s post was “completely inappropriate.” https://thehill.com/policy/international/6075907-iceland-summons-us-ambassador-trump-post/

September 8, 2026

Iceland’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday (Sep 8) it had summoned the US ambassador after President Donald Trump posted a map that seemingly showed the island as part of the United States. …

Iceland relies on Washington for its security as the subarctic island has not had a military since gaining independence in 1944.

It is a founding member of NATO and has a 1951 bilateral defence agreement with the United States.

Trump’s repeated threats to take control of Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory located fewer than 300km from Iceland, and his trade showdown with Canada have already rattled Iceland.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told media late on Monday that “the Greenlandic government and the Greenlandic people have said again and again that they do not wish to be American”.

“We can certainly repeat that message today,” she told news agency Ritzau, commenting on the map while on a visit to Greenland. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/world/iceland-us-ambassador-trump-map-6370026

Mexico “is not and will not be a colony or protectorate of any foreign country,” declared President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, after U.S. President Donald Trump circulated on social media a map in which Mexico, Canada, Greenland, and other territories appear covered with elements of the United States flag. https://mexicosolidarity.com/sheinbaum-mexico-not-a-colony/

Donald Trump shrewdly waited until AFTER Iceland voted to not continue accession talks further with the European Union last week (https://ecfr.eu/article/a-no-to-the-eu-not-to-europe-what-icelanders-actually-voted-on/). If Donald Trump released that picture a before that vote, the results may have changed. And his map posting may already be changing minds in Iceland.

Furthermore, Mexico has already been pushed more towards the European Union (see As predicted here, European Union and Mexico sign a trade deal, at least partially because of Donald Trump), and this map matter only makes Mexico’s determination stronger. One day, consistent with prophecies such as Daniel 11:39, I believe Mexico will end up with territories now part of the United States.

The Trump Administration continues to push friends and others to question being allies.

What has been happening is consistent with setting up the following to be fulfilled:

1 How lonely sits the city
That was full of people!
How like a widow is she,
Who was great among the nations!
The princess among the provinces
Has become a slave!

2 She weeps bitterly in the night,
Her tears are on her cheeks;
Among all her lovers
She has none to comfort her.
All her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
They have become her enemies. (Lamentations 1:1-2)

The USA continues to push nations away from it.

Canada, itself, has made several overtures to the European Union related to these matters (e.g. see First ever EU-Armenia summit–50 nations including Canada meet for European Political Community and European Union and Canada coordinating digital identification scheme?)–and some in the EU have interest in Canada (e.g. European Council President António Costa in Serbia and pushing for speeding entrance of Balkan states into the EU; Plus Finland’s President proposed inviting Canada to the European Union).

Donald Trump has bullied Canada, Mexico, Europe, and many others.

Newton’s Third Law of Motion is for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

In the case of Donald Trump there continue to be unintended consequences of his statements, threats, and actions.

Donald Trump is getting many nations, and not just Canada, Mexico, and Iceland, looking to trade more with Europe and and others.

More and more are trying to figure out how to thrive with less trade with the USA.

That is an unintended consequence of Donald Trump’s tariff and trade policies.
