Petra Chosen as One of the Seven Wonders

Monday, July 9th, 2007

Jordan celebrates Petra’s pick as one of 7 wonders of the world…

Associated Press – July 8, 2007

Jordanians rejoiced Sunday over the inclusion of the ancient city Petra in the new seven wonders of the world, celebrating their victory with a fireworks display in the capital and dancing in the early morning hours.Petra came in second behind the Great Wall of China in a massive global online poll and phone campaign in which more than 100 million people chose the world’s top architectural marvels among 20 entries. The contest was launched by the Switzerland-based NewOpenWorld Foundation – a group that aims to promote cultural diversity by supporting, preserving and restoring monuments…

“This will really put Petra on the map of choice tourist destinations,” said taxi driver Bassam Kabbalani, who was among the early morning revelers at the King Hussein Gardens, a popular family spot in Amman. “Before Petra was known to some, but now it’s known to all.”“I’m sure Petra’s win means that even more tourists will visit Jordan,” said shopkeeper Farouk Tanhammi. “That’s exactly what our economy needs right now.”

Petra – most recently popularized by the movie “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” – is known for its dramatic tombs and temple facades, including one that served as a church during Byzantine times. The city’s inhabitants, Nabataean Arab nomads, carved the structures into the soft sandstone some 2,000 years ago.

The rose-red rock city was hidden behind an almost impenetrable barrier of rugged mountains for centuries until it was rediscovered by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burchhardt in 1812…

The event was broadcast live on screens set up on hilly Amman’s highest point, the Citadel, as well as at Petra’s striking Treasury, the site’s signature monument.

Jordan Television ran continuous programing from Petra, where thousands gathered to hear the results and enjoy a night filled with Arabic music and traditional dancing.

On Sunday, Jordanian Prime Minister Marouf al-Bakhit presided over a conference in the ancient city entitled Petra, the Center of Human Culture to honor its new title…

The campaign for the new seven wonders was begun in 1999 by Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber, with almost 200 nominations coming in from around the world.

The list of candidates was narrowed down to 21 by the start of 2006, including Egypt’s Pyramids.

From a COG perspective, Petra has often been mentioned as a possible “place of safety“–the place in the wilderness that the Philadelphian remnant will live at during the Great Tribulation.

Interestingly, some Protestant theologians believe that during the Great Tribulation, Jewish Christian converts will be protected in Petra (since the COGs keep practices that the original Jewish Christians did, in that sense this particular Protestant understanding may be correct).  It should be noted that it is not absolutely biblical certain that Petra will be that place.  Also the more popular Petra becomes, unless world events change in particular ways (which they may) it may be that the Philadelphian remnant will simply be near, not in, Petra.

However what is certain from a biblical perspective is that there will not be a “pre-tribulation rapture” of Christians, even though many (but not all) evangelicals seem to prefer to believe otherwise.

CEM’s Ron Dart Apologizes, Sort of

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

The Journal announced the following in an email yesterday:

No intent to allege cowardice

[Regarding “Open Letter to Ron Dart: We Are Not Cowards,” an editorial by Thomas M. Geiger in The Journal, March-April 2007]: This is the letter I sent to Mr. Geiger in reply:

Thank you for your letter and the work you have done in analyzing the shooting of the brethren in Brookfield. By coincidence, it arrived in my office the day after the Virginia Tech shooting, so the entire picture was illuminated in a way that otherwise might not have been.

I do feel I failed to take into account the shock and disorientation of the victims, just as was the case in Virginia. There was simply no time for the event to even register on the brain, much less react to it.

But, in any case, it was not my intent to make a charge of cowardice. Rather, I was drawing it, however mistakenly, as an illustration of a culture of pacifism, and an allegory of how churches can be assaulted doctrinally or intellectually and people fail to act against it.

I think we would agree that the WCG practiced pacifism at some level, and, since the LCG is closely related to that culture, they would also be influenced by it.

I know that in years gone by the membership depended on the ministry to keep the wolves at bay and did not see their own responsibility in doing so.

In the VT shooting there were some bright lights who tried to act against the killer, most notably the gentleman who was a holocaust survivor. I think, in his lifetime, he had learned that allowing yourself to be led like a lamb to the slaughter is a fool’s game.

It is my hope that the brethren in the church will learn to react quickly and forcefully against attacks on the church, however they may come.

Thanks for taking the time to write and for the kind approach you took in your letter.

Ronald L. Dart

I agree that we in LCG are not cowards, but contrary to the claims of various ones, we are pacifists.

In the “apology” above, Ron Dart still takes exception to being a pacifist.  A pacifist is not someone who will never try to stop someone from harming themselves or others (as Ron Dart has implied before), a pacifist is one who will not kill or participate in carnal warfare.

Ron Dart, however, has endorsed the idea that true Christians can participate in warfare.  This is a departure from biblical and Church of God teachings.

COGwriter Did Not Refuse Ordination

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

                        COGwriter on Mars Hill

COGwriter in front of the Church of the Revelation in Patmos

Every now and then, I deal with some of the inaccurate comments directed at me on the internet, and because I do not want one item (the eldership issue) to become an “urban legend”, I thought I would deal with several charges that have been posted at two of the anti-COG sites in the past several weeks:

That Bob Thiel does not believe in One True God is most disturbing! (AW).

I most certainly do believe in one true God.  Being binitarian, as the early Christian church was, does not mean that I do not believe in one God.  The Bible clearly teaches that God is one and that both the Father and Son are God.  Early, post-New Testament, church leaders also taught that the Father and Son are God.  Most of us in the COGs believe, that since the Bible shows a family relationship within the Godhead, that God is one family.

Articles on the Godhead include:

Binitarian View: One God, Two Beings Before the BeginningIs binitarianism the correct position? What about unitarianism or trinitarianism?
Is The Father God? What is the view of the Bible? What was the view of the early church?
Jesus is God, But Was Made Man Was Jesus fully human and fully God or what?
Virgin Birth: Does the Bible Teach It? What does the Bible teach? What is claimed in The Da Vinci Code?
Did Early Christians Think the Holy Spirit Was A Separate Person in a Trinity? Or did they have a different view?
Did the True Church Ever Teach a Trinity? Most act like this is so, but is it?
Was Unitarianism the Teaching of the Bible or Early Church? Many, including Jehovah’s Witnesses, claim it was, but was it?
Binitarianism: One God, Two Beings Before the Beginning This is a shorter article than the Binitarian View article, but has a little more information on binitarianism.

Here are some charges against the COGwriter website:

In case you haven’t noticed, Bob Thiel likes to play with a stacked deck. He claims the purpose of his website is bringing the Cogs together. But he spends most of his time trashing the other Cogs. Then he whines about personal attacks when the shoe hits the other foot. (XCG)

The purpose of the COGwriter site is not to bring the COGs together–but to unify the remnant of the Philadelphians–hence the need to point out differences in groups.  Here is what the COGwriter home page states (it would be nice if critics read it before mistaking what it says):

The purpose of this web page is to help unify the remnant of the Philadelphia era of God’s Church so that it may more effectively get the Gospel out as a witness (Matthew 24:14; Revelation 3:8) and so be kept “from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth” (Revelation 3:10).

I do not trash other COGs.  I do, however, sometimes point out how they differ in teachings from the old WCG and/or the Living Church of God–but this takes only the smallest percentage of my time related to COGwriter.  It is not trashing a group by pointing out differences in teachings and practices that make them unique–presumably those differences are important to them or they would not have them.  Articles and links on various COGs can be found at the COGlinks page.

As far as personal attacks, I do not whine about them.  I do, however, sometimes decide to make public comments as I would like readers to realize that many post inaccurate information about me.  It may be of interest to note that I am probably attacked more than any other non-ordained COG member on the internet.  I let the majority of the untrue attacks against me pass.

Here is another railing charge:

When you send him an email, discussing a mistake or flaw in his thinking, he doesn’t reply with an articulate counter, he responds with personal insults. (XCG)

I consider the above an insult and do not attempt to insult those who write me.  I do reply to emails and believe my responses are articulated properly.

However, it is true that I am not that interested in the personal theological opinions of those who have turned their back on “the faith once for all delivered unto the saints” (Jude 3).  As sincere contributors to the COGwriter website realize, I do make corrections if factual errors are pointed out.

But perhaps all (especially the anti-COG critics) may wish to be reminded about what the home page of the COGwriter site states:

If you never write, we will not know what you think!

Note: I am happy to correct any factual errors, but am not interested in hearing from those intent on bashing LCG or the COG in general, nor am I interested in religious spam.

Apparently some anti-COG types intent on bashing the COGs have not read the home page.

Another wrote:

Often, in his endless commentaries of slander and libel, he contains certain, shall we say, inaccuracies, but not to worry, he will never correct them because he is perfect and besides, you are to do what he says and not as he does, just as all his predecessors have done. (XCG)

As I mentioned before, I do correct factual errors (also, there have been no “predecessors” on this site as I personally began it–I presume, therefore, that the critic is indicating that I am like some he did not care for in the old WCG leadership).  Anyway, I do not believe that any of my commentaries contain slander or libel.

Broad brush condemnations without specifics are typical of critics of this website.

However the following is why I decided to bother addressing some of the charges now as it is starting to get repeated as if it were true:

Bob Thiel has been offered the chance to become an ordained minister. Yet he turns it down. Have you ever wondered about that? If he truly believes that the LCG is the one true remnant, then why would he turn it down? That’s the same thing as refusing God Himself, isn’t it? (XCG)

The above is simply not true.  Although I have not sought out becoming an ordained minister (nor is that my goal), I never have turned it down.

Notice the following comment made because of the inaccurate turning down an ordination charge:

There is not one reason to allow him one shred of credibility in eschatological matters. After all, he did turn down an eldership. (XCG)

That latter statement is simply not true.  The truth is that becoming an elder is not my goal–but I have never turned down an eldership.

As far as echatological matters are concerned, I have studied the Bible as well as Catholic, Protestant, and COG eschatology.  Readers should compare what I expound with the Bible–and to make that easier, I often do cite scripture in my eschatological pieces.  At the COGwriter site I tell readers don’t believe me, believe what you see in your own Bibles.  I encourage readers to be like the Bereans who “searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11).  Specifically, the Who is COGwriter? article states:

Don’t simply believe me Believe what the Bible really Teaches Believe the Truth Prove all things – Believe God!

The next item is minor, but I thought it may as well be addressed as it is actually a topic at xCG:

I suspect that “blog” implies for Mr. Thiel something informal, and we all know what informal means in COG speak—it’s the opposite of authoritative. “Blog” in the COG world is turning into something like the term “dissident.” (XCG)

No, that is not the case with me.  LCG’s Wallace Smith has a blog (he is one of the presenter’s for LCG’s Tomorrow’s World).  I consider that a blog is mainly personal opinions or observations (even though others have differeing opinions or definitions).  That is what Wallace Smith has on his blog and that is mainly what the anti-COG sites have on their blogs.

The COGwriter website contains research, history, doctrine, news, and generally limited commentary.  And the reason that I began using WordPress about a month ago was to make it easier for readers to find news-related articles, not to make it a posting forum.  Pretty much all those who wrote about the change were positive, and the one negative (which concerned font size) was pleased when my son Michael added a sizing button (see top, upper right).

The inaccurate comments on the anti-COG sites, such as those I chose to address today, are one of the reasons I do not have an external comment feature at the COGwriter website.  I would not want inaccurate information posted at the COGwriter site and simply would not have the time to police that type of thing if the site was opened up for external comments–plus external comments from those that do not hold to the same doctrines or direction for the Church of Revelation 3:7-13 does not fit with the intent nor direction of the COGwriter site.

The COGwriter site is intended to provide information to help unify those who are or hope to be part of the Philadelphia portion of the Church of God.  Posting comments from anti-COG readers, as well as those who may be part of other Church Eras, does not usually help that mission (though limited quotes are used at times).

However, perhaps it should be mentioned that many readers do email me, and perhaps 25% (or more) of what I post is from or directly related to, those emails (mostly news articles, but sometimes historical, doctrinal, or prophetic questions).

UCG: Improving Ties In Jordan

Friday, July 6th, 2007

The July 2007 edition of UCG’s “United News” reported:

Young Adults Chosen for Jordan Youth Corps Project
Two are set to teach in Jordan this year, and 10 to 15 will serve next summer in a six-week project.
by David Register

Matthew Bates and Mary Ann Miller have been chosen to serve as United Youth Corp’s first volunteers at the Amman Baccalaureate School (ABS) in Amman, Jordan. The couple, who will soon be married, will be teacher’s assistants at the premier preparatory school in Amman. They will report for new faculty orientation in August, and work at the school until graduation in June 2008.

The 10-month program will allow Matthew and Mary Ann an opportunity to teach young people and influence them with a powerful example of morality, discipline and Christian conduct.

The school will be providing housing, transportation and a small monthly stipend for the couple during their stay in Jordan. They will also have opportunities for travel throughout the region. Jerusalem, Damascus, Cairo, Beirut and Istanbul are within an hour’s flight or a day’s drive of Amman. During 10 months of immersion, they will learn to speak and read Arabic and have a chance to meet members of the royal family.

Matthew is a member from the Bakersfield, California, congregation and Mary Ann is a member from the Cambridge, Ohio, congregation. Both are recent Ambassador Bible Center graduates.

The Beginning

This opportunity came about after a visit to Amman by David Register, director of Education Programs, and Cory Erickson, elder from St. Paul, Minnesota, and Festival coordinator for the 2007 Jordan Feast site. In April they were invited by Princess Sarvath al Hassan, of the Jordanian royal family, to meet and discuss opportunities for United Youth Corps in Jordan. The princess serves as the chairwoman of the board of trustees for the school.

The princess discussed the need for assistant teachers who could bring “strong character instruction, youthful vitality, and new educational ideas” to the faculty and students at the Amman Baccalaureate School. University-aged volunteers from the Church served at the school as assistant teachers in the early 1990s. Their influence left a lasting impression with the princess and the faculty at ABS. She said that the school board had met a couple of weeks prior to the April visit and discussed the desire to have young adults from the Church serve again.

Since Herbert Armstrong, various COGs (like PCG) have had some ties with Jordan, normally through part of Jordan’s royal family.

COGs have considered that the area of (or near) Petra, in Jordan, may be the “place of safety” for Philadelphia Christians.  The COGs do not teach the Protestant rapture concept as is taught by the “Left Behind” series of books–instead we teach that the protection will take place in the wilderness on earth (Revelation 12:14).

WCG: Ordinations and Myrtle Beach

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

In the July-August edition of Together (Worldwide Church of God News) are the following items:

Harvest Conference in Myrtle Beach Oct. 4-7

The Harvest Church in Marion and Myrtle Beach, SC, will again sponsor a conference titled “Gathering in the Harvest for Jesus.” The conference will be held Oct. 4-7 at the Springmaid Convention Center.

Paul David Kurts will speak on Thursday evening; Charles Young will speak on Friday evening. On Saturday, Dan Rogers will speak in the morning, and in the afternoon seminars will be offered on marriage, finances, and youth. Howard Blakeney and Keith Brittain will conclude on Sunday.

Registration is $35 for an individual or $80 for a family…

Ordinations

Rebecca Deuel, Fox Valley, WI
Ines Cante, Moreno Valley, CA
Sarah Faulkner, Fort Myers, FL
Linard Johnson, Gainesville, FL
Ed Kitt, Calgary, Alberta
Bonny McQueary, Fort Myers, FL
Zita Mickens, Tucson, AZ
Ted Millhuff, Tucson, AZ
James Nicholson, Honolulu, HI
Reynaldo Salayon, Daet, Philippines
Paul Volpe, Gainesville, FL

Both ICG and LCG are having Feast of Tabenacles’ Sites in Myrtle Beach in 2007. It seems a little odd that WCG has decided to begin a conference there on a day they no longer recognize–the Last Great Day (see the article Is There “An Annual Worship Calendar” In the Bible?).

Under ordinations, it is interesting to notice that apparently (based upon my assessment of the first names) five of the eleven ordinations are for women.  This seems consistent with WCG’s recent changes in this area.  An article of possible interest may include Women and the New Testament Church.

CGOM: God is Father

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

In its July 2007 newsletter, CGOM (UK) writes:

Fatherhood of God
Unpopular as discipline may be in our day, the Bible is clear that the Father God takes seriously his responsibility to discipline His children: ‘For they [our human fathers] indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness’ (Hebrews 12:10).

As imperfect children we need disciplining! We need correction.  Wrote the Psalmist: ‘Search me, O God, and know my heart: Try me, and know my thoughts; And see if there be any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting’ (Psalm 139:23-24).

It’s all too easy to dismiss the notion that God is behind some of our troubles. Those financial reverses – are they just ‘bad luck’? Or the job loss? What about an illness that won’t go away? Do we have relationship problems? Should we not ask if perhaps our Father – our loving spiritual Father – is trying to get through to us?

 What, then, can we do?

…start from the assumption that we are yet imperfect, that we still have lessons to
   learn, personality traits to eliminate
…assume, until it is clear otherwise, that our ‘trouble’ is indeed divine correction
…ask the LORD to show you what is His message, how He desires you to change
…search the Scriptures to compare your lifestyle with the divine standard
…get wise counsel from mature Bible-believing Christians; but beware of pseudo-psychology
…accept joyfully that God knows what He is doing: ‘My brothers count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the proving of your faith works patience. But let patience have its perfective work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask from God, who gives to all freely and with no reproach, and it will be given to him (James 1:2-5)
…all of us need a ‘personality transplant’. Our behavioural standard – what as Christians we aim for – is to be that of Jesus Christ. The apostle John writes: ‘Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, because all that which is in the world: the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.  And the world is passing away, and its lust. But the one doing the will of God abides forever’ (I John 2:15-17)

Change is indeed a challenge. Sinful habits are deeply implanted in our nature. With God’s help coupled with our personal application we can become more Christ-like.      Ω

Britain & USA: King of the South?

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

COGwriter

Two Jehovah’s Witnesses came to my door a couple of days ago and dropped off a book titled Pay Attention to Daniel’s Prophecy!

On page 56 of that book is an illustration of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream image with various dates.  It starts with Babylon as the head of gold, followed by Medo-Persia as the chest and arms of silver, followed by Greece as the belly and thighs of bronze, followed by Rome as the upper to middle leg.  When I saw the JW illustration, I immediately noticed some problems with the early dates the JWs used (even the same JW booklet on pages 31-33 has a much earlier start date for Nebuchanezzer’s rulership than its illustration–though it tries to explain it), but more importantly, I was surprised that the JWs show Britain and the USA as part of the image discussed in Daniel 2.  They showed what they call “Anglo-American World Power” as the lower legs, but not the feet.

Apparently the JWs believe that after Britain made a deal with France in 1763, that it became part of the image succeeding Rome. On page 140 of the same book they specifically teach that Britain was the “little horn” of Daniel 8:7 and on page 141 they teach that the USA grew out of it.

In the time of the end, the JWs seem to teach that the bottom portion of the image is either unknown or related to the United Nations.  FWIW, the JWs specifically teach that “the digusting thing that is causing desolation…(Daniel 11:31b)” was “the League of Nations” (Pay Attention to Daniel’s Prophecy! pp. 267,269).

This differs from positions of groups like the Living Church of God (LCG) which teach that the feet/toes of the final portion of the image will be a revival of the Roman Empire–something we believe is beginning to form currently in Europe.  LCG also teaches that the “abomination that makes desolation” has to do with false Christianity stopping Jewish sacrifices (which must start before they are stopped) and more firmly establishing itself in Jerusalem at the time of the end.

In Pay Attention to Daniel’s Prophecy! the JWs correctly teach,

The designations “the king of the north and “the king of the south” refer to kings north and south of Daniel’s people, who were freed from Babylonian captivity and restored to the land of Judah (p. 218).

However, the JWs also teach that because Britain controlled Egypt for a while in the early 20th century, that Britain then became the “king of the south”!

Notice what else the JWs teach in Pay Attention to Daniel’s Prophecy!:

When World War I broke out in 1914, Egypt belonged to Turkey…

Britain…declared Turkey a British protectorate.  Gradually forming close ties, Britain and the United States of America became the Anglo-American World Power.  Together, they came into position of the king of the south (p.247).

This causes the JWs several problems as they indicate with the image of Daniel 2 that the Anglo-American World Power formed over 100 years prior to WWI, plus the fact that since Britain and the USA no longer control Egypt, that they are not south of Judah (actually, all of Britain and the USA, with the exception of the Falkland Islands and some minor territories, are north of Judah).

A chart that the book Pay Attention to Daniel’s Prophecy! has on page 284 shows that the JWs believe that “Anglo-American World Power” became the “king of the south” around WWI, were also the king of the south in WWII, were also the king of the south during the time of the “cold war”, and will be at the final end.

In addition, unlike the COGs, the JWs teach:

Similarly, the king of the south is not destroyed by the king of the north (p. 285).

Sadly, the misunderstanding of prophecy that many groups (like the JWs and even many who are affiliated with some of the COGs) will deceive them about end-time events.

Three articles of related interest may include:

Is There A Future King of the South? Some no longer believe there needs to be. Might Egypt, Islam, Iran, Arabs, or Ethiopia be involved? What does the Bible say?
The Bible and the Arab World In History and Prophecy The Bible discusses the origins of the Arab world and discusses the Middle East in prophecy. What is ahead for the Middle East and those who follow Islam?
Modern Nations and God’s Ancient Plan Many peoples are mentioned in the Bible. And other than the fact that the nation of Israel represents the ancient kingdom of Judah, do you know who any of these people are now?

COGwriter In June 2007

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

During June 2007, the News of Interest to those once Affiliated with the Worldwide Church of God page was changed to this Church of God News page.  In addition to the title change, there was a format change as well.

While most readers seem to have liked the change, I did hear from one who said that the font size on this new format was difficult for him to read.  So, I asked my son Michael to see what he could do.  So as of now, you can click the word “Large” in the upper right of this page to increase the font size (you can also click on the word “Normal” to return to the standard size).

One oddity that I noticed during the month is that Alexa (a site that supposedly ranks the popularity of websites) uses a highly biased (apparently towards New Zealand in the case of this website) sample to determine rankings.  For example, it states that 47.7% of visitors to this site were from New Zealand and that 47.7% were from the United States, where in fact New Zealanders make up less than 3% of those who visit the COGwriter pages.

One reason that I noticed this bias was because it seemed strange to me that although the total hits to the COGwriter pages is double what they actually were last year, my “Alexa ranking” dropped a little bit.  The fact is that the COGwriter site gets more hits and page views (Alexa allegedly is based on page views) individually from Canada, the EU, South Africa, Great Britain, and China than it does from New Zealand (which makes sense as they all have much larger populations than New Zealand does).

During June, the following were the most viewed articles (excludes news, searches, and quizes) at the COGwriter.com website:

  1. Concerns About Ronald Weinland’s Church of God-Preparing for the Kingdom of God Ronald Weinland claims to be one of the two witnesses. He has at least one other view that suggests that he is not part of the COG.
  2. LCG 2007 Feast of Tabernacles’ Sites A listing from LCG updates concerning Feast of Tabernacles’s locations for 2007.
  3. Why Not the Restored Church of God? This group, led by David Pack, claims to be the most faithful. The information in this article suggests otherwise.
  4. History of Early Christianity Are you aware that what most people believe is not what truly happened to the true Christian church?
  5. Europa, the Beast, and the Book of Revelation discusses the largest church since the second/third century, which in a real sense is the eighth church mentioned in the Book of Revelation.
  6. Some Similarities and Differences Between the Orthodox Church and the Churches of God Both groups have some amazing similarities and some major differences. Do you know what they are?
  7. Sola Scriptura or Prima Luther? What Did Martin Luther Really Believe About the Bible? Though he is known for his public sola Scriptura teaching, Martin Luther’s writings about the Bible suggest he felt that prima Luther was his ultimate authority.
