Produce Prices Skyrocket

The freeze that I warned about a couple of weeks ago (Major Storms Hitting North America and Australia, Food Production Could Be Impacted) is already causing produce prices to greatly increase:

Produce prices skyrocket with freeze in Mexico, Southwest
KGW-TV, Portland – Feb 13, 2011

PORTLAND — Get ready to pay double or even triple the price for fresh produce in the coming weeks after the worst freeze in 60 years damaged and wiped out entire crops in northern Mexico and the southwestern U.S.

The problem started less than a week ago, when our nation was focusing on the Superbowl and sheets of ice falling from Texas Stadium.

Farmers throughout northern Mexico and the Southwest experienced unprecedented crop losses.  Now devastation that seemed so far away, is hitting us in the pocketbooks.

“We’ve had to double and triple some prices and consumers come in and it’s quite a shock to them,” said Rusty Peake, GM of Food4Less in Southeast Portland…

Next week, lettuce and spinach prices are expected to rise.  Normal prices likely won’t return until new crops in Mexico start producing again in late March and early April. http://www.kgw.com/news/local/Produce-prices-skyrocket-overnight-115985429.html

Food prices are rising.

Jesus foretold on a time of famines as part of “the beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:7-8), and the Book of Revelation (16:8-11) tells of a time of even greater disturbances during “the Day of the Lord”. These will go beyond what normally have occurred in the past century. World events are aligning towards the fulfillment of biblical prophecies.

Now there is good news as ultimately, God’s kingdom will come and those issues will be gone (Revelation 7:16). But a terrible hour of trial is coming first (Revelation 3:10).

As Jesus said:

37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:36-37)

Food shortages are something to watch.

Tougher times are coming. And for some parts of the world these tougher time may be here now. People who can prepare, should. Both spiritually and physically. And this will not only affect people in places like Africa, Asia, and the Middle East–the Anglo-descended nations of the West will themselves suffer hunger and famine.  And apparently price increases prior to that.

CT: Worldly ‘Christianity’ and Valentine’s Day

Monday, February 14th, 2011

COGwriter

Throughout the world, February 14th is often celebrated throughout the world as “Valentine’s Day”.

A 2008 news item correctly reported:

St. Valentine’s Day — a day to declare your affection for that special someone.

And what did Saint Valentine have to do with love notes and affection? Absolutely nothing! In fact, there’s a good chance he may never have existed. You see, at least according to most accounts, the day was begun by the residents of ancient Rome who wanted to honor the she-wolf that had raised Romulus and Remus. It was Romulus who founded Rome, after killing his brother Remus in a fit of rage. At least that’s the story they’ve been telling over the centuries.

However the Christian church leaders in Rome didn’t like the celebration. Too pagan-like, they said. But, knowing the celebration was too popular for them to end, they gave it some Christian respectability instead. They decided since it coincided with St. Valentine’s feast day they would call it St. Valentine’s Day (Brown P. Origin of Valentine’s Day may surprise us. The Enid News & Eagle, Enid OK, Published: January 16, 2008 12:49 am. http://www.enidnews.com/opinion/local_story_016004906.html viewed 01/17/08).

Yet Christianity Today (CT) reported,

Civilizations have celebrated Valentine’s Day for millennia, but even so, on February 14, we seem ready to celebrate love once again. Here are some articles on the holiday’s Christian history, thoughts on love, and ways to show your Valentine how much you care.

“Civilizations” of the world certainly “have celebrated Valentine’s Day for millennia”, but real Christians have not. On that page with that claim there was also an ad for “The perfect gift for your Valentine!”

How commercially convenient.  How worldly.

In 2009, Christianity Today‘s Valentines from Heaven article began with:

How God reminded nine singles of his love for them on Valentine’s Day

Since I’m single, I spent February 14 trying to concentrate on the fact that God is my valentine…(Valentine’s from Heaven. Christianity Today. http://www.christianitytoday.com/singles/newsletter/responses-valentine.html, viewed 2/12/09)

The above page had an ad that attempted to sell some type of dating service. Would God want to be viewed as a Valentine?

In 2007, Christianity Today‘s History of Valentine’s Day article began with,

St. Valentine was actually two people (that weren’t romantically involved) who were martyred on the same day (c. 270). Feasts commemorating them were celebrated on February 14. One was a priest and physician who died in Rome during the persecution of Christians by Claudius II Grothicus. The other was the bishop at Terni, Italy who was also martyred in Rome. Both have been buried at different places along the Flaminian Way (History of Valentine’s Day. Christianity Today. 1999. http://www.christianitytoday.com/holidays/valentines/features/history.html, January 31, 2004).

The Christianity Today article above never mentioned the pagan origins of the holiday. The closest it comes is by stating,

So why do people send “valentines” or “love-tokens” to one another on that day? The origin of that tradition is not thought to have any connection with the saint’s day. Rather it comes from an early European belief that the second week of February was when birds began to mate. The idea suggests that lovers should probably exchange notes and gifts on February 14 in conjunction with what nature practiced. It then concludes with “Nowadays, Valentine’s Day is observed as a special day for love and romance. This topic is one of the oldest, and probably most-discussed, issues in history! As Christians, we know that love originates from God and that God is love (1 John 4:16).

That is the history of Valentine’s Day? Is that what Christianity Today believes Christians should know about that day? Are the customs associated with Valentine’s Day truly biblical? Or does the Protestant world wish to obscure the truth? Did Christianity Today intentionally leave the whole truth out?

Perhaps.

However, if one looks further, one will realize that although in every recent year Christianity Today tries to sell gifts related to Valentine’s Day on the internet, it does have an article that admits the following:

There are more tales of the “origins” of Valentine’s Day than arrows in Cupid’s quiver. As expected, most have something to do with pagan ritual (pretty much every holiday—from Christmas to Mother’s Day—has something to do with pagan ritual). Four centuries before Christ, Romans had a day called Lupercalia. Without going too much into it, I’ll sum it up as a sexual lottery. Pull names out of a box at random and couple with a young member of the opposite sex. After a year, you get to pick another name (Olsen T. Then Again Maybe Don’t Be My Valentine. Christianity Today. February 12, 1999).

So, Valentine’s Day was originally a sexual lottery according to Christianity Today. Yet, despite knowing that much of the truth, in 2011 (like it did in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010) Christianity Today still promotes and tries to sell gifts for Valentine’s Day.

Christians who may be tempted to compromise need to ask themselves if the origins of Valentine’s Day are biblical or pagan.

The Apostle John was inspired to write:

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.  (1 John 2:15-17, NKJV)

Valentine’s Day is a worldly holiday, essentially built upon lust of the eyes and the pride of life.  It will pass away, it is not a Christian holiday.

It is of interest to note that even a Catholic source states,

The Catholic Church no longer officially honors St. Valentine, but the holiday has both Roman and Catholic roots.

It is good that the Church of Rome no longer officially honors Valentine or the holiday.

None who profess Christ should observe this February “holiday”–it simply is not a Christian holiday. It began as a pagan sexual lottery and still has sexual and lustful ramifications, even in the 21st century.

China Appears Worried About Egypt

China has been censoring information about Egypt

China censors news about Egypt

Detroit Free Press – ‎13 February 2011

Official denial

China’s rigidly controlled news media downplayed coverage of Egypt’s popular uprising, running only brief items and concentrating on the violence.

The demonstrations in Cairo’s Tahrir Square were too close for comfort for China, which ruthlessly put down an uprising in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Most newspapers ran only terse reports, and an editorial in China Daily used the word “stability,” seven times

Internet censors blocked the ability to search “Egypt” and “Mubarak.”

On an indirectly related note, the following was also in the headlines today:

China steps up action on activists

The Australian – Michael Sainsbury – ‎5 hours ago‎

The China Human Rights Defenders network cited a source saying the couple were “beaten senseless” by security officials who injured them so badly they could not get out of bed but who would not allow them to go to hospital.

China is concerned about unrest in its land.

Years ago, here is what LCG’s Roderick C. Meredith wrote:

Many publications have suggested that the 21st century will be “China’s century.” Even though the Chinese are fiercely moving forward, and their progress in developing their industries is obvious, these publications are dead wrong for two reasons. First, the inspired word of God describes specifically how a coming European Union will be the dominant force in this world—obviously within the next several years. Therefore, brethren, I would like to focus your mind on this matter so you can more intelligently “watch” world events along this line as they unfold before your very eyes. In the coming years, you will perhaps even see a revolt of the peasants in the outlying Chinese cities, who have lagged far behind the standard of living afforded those who have moved to Beijing and Shanghai. Plus, the tremendous pollution of the water, air and foodstuffs may bring about massive disease epidemics and other problems for the Chinese.

In addition, distracting wars and other events may— as God chooses to guide it—greatly undermine the material progress now being made by the Chinese…

So the 21st century will not be the “Chinese century!” (Meredith R.C. An Inspiring and Successful Trip. Living Church News. May-June 2007, p. 21).

China’s pollution, potential for significant social unrest, and how it is discussed in biblical prophecy suggest that the 21st century will not belong to China.  China will be a major player in a variety of events, including military ones, but will not lead like many there hope.

After the Great Tribulation starts, China is prophesied to play a role against the coming European Beast power. But China will experience a variety of internal problems between now and then.

As for Egypt itself, it is having issues:

CAIRO — Egypt’s military moved Sunday to restore order in Cairo after weeks of mass demonstrations, but troops faced some resistance as they tried to dismantle the protest camp at the heart of the movement that toppled President Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt’s Military Dissolves Parliament; Calls for Vote

New York Times – Kareem Fahim, David Goodman – 13 February 2011

CAIRO – The Egyptian military, for the first time publicly laying out the terms of its rule, said Sunday that it had dissolved the country’s parliament, suspended its constitution and called for elections in six months, according to a statement by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces read on state television. It also said it would honor all of Egypt’s international agreements, including the peace treaty with Israel.

The military did not address a third demand to lift emergency rule.

But despite whatever interim government(s) it will have, ultimately Egypt will support the final King of the South.

Tonga’s Heamasi K. Ta’ufo’ou Makes 166 UCG Ministerial Losses. What’s the Message?

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

COGwriter

The Abigail Cartwright (AC) site listed one more loss to UCG’s eldership:

  • Mr. Heamasi K. Ta’ufo’ou (Pastor, Tonga)… resigned from UCG ministry
  • Losing its Tongan pastor would seem to suggest that the ministry of UCG had problems all over the world as Tonga is fairly remote.  Note: As of this morning, Heamasi K. Ta’ufo’ou was not listed as part of COGWA on its congregations page, but that could change as COGWA seems a little slow about updating some of its web pages.

According to the list at the AC site today, UCG has lost 166 elders/pastors/ministers since June 0f 2010. But this only represents about 1/3 of UCG’s pre-crisis eldership.  However, UCG has admitted to losing 53% of its salaried USA ministry from this crisis, so organizationally it has been hit pretty hard.  The loss of so many paid and full-time elders suggests a great level of dissatisfaction amongst the UCG ministry.

On the other hand, I received an email from a UCG member who essentially stated that this crisis has not been an issue for his congregation and that it has not been tough for him.

I responded to him that this has been tough for the organization as well as for those who are or were in UCG.  I also mentioned that not though not all in UCG are personally struggling about where to be, this crisis has disrupted UCG, its income, certain of its objectives, and its implication that it was united.

Now, this UCG member did ask me the following question:

What do you think the chance is that these men can come together to agree to support a government when they aren’t really in agreement and in many cases have failed to be able to work with any form of church governance since UCG days?

My response was, I do not consider that their chances in COGWA are that good, but also mentioned that for various reasons, they may stay together.

As regular readers should be aware, I do not believe that it is particularly beneficial to go from UCG to COGWA (consider Jesus’ words, “be zealous and repent” in Revelation 3:19; the type of change from UCG to COGWA does not seem consistent with being zealous or repenting to me).  In my view, the crisis in UCG could have been resolved differently.  Both sides seem to be clinging to the mistakes that some on the other side made to justify to themselves what they have done and/or are doing.  And though I am convinced that there were some mistakes made by those still in UCG and some of those who left UCG, if UCG was truly “united” in a spirit of cooperative humility the issues could have been resolved.  But now, with egos, lack of forgiveness, a compromised attitude towards proper church governance, personal vanity, and bruised feelings, the crisis keeps affecting UCG and those once part of it.

    So, what’s the message?

Forgiveness and warnings seem to have been overlooked.

LCG’s Dr. Winnail happened to have had the following in yesterday’s Living Church of God World Ahead Weekly Update:

The Power of Forgiveness: One of the important keys for working together with other people is the willingness and the ability to forgive someone for real or perceived words or actions. And, that is exactly what Christians must learn to do. The Scriptures state that as individuals, we have all sinned, but that we can be forgiven because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ who died for our sins (Romans 3:23-26; John 3:16). However, Jesus taught that we must also be ready and willing to forgive others who offend us—or God will not forgive us (Matthew 6:12-15). Forgiving others involves not holding grudges or harboring bitterness against others, not seeking to get even, and not gossiping or saying negative or derogatory things about others who have made mistakes or hurt us in some way. This is not always easy, especially when memories, emotions and personal pride are involved, but that is what we are admonished to do if we want to be real Christians—we must learn to forgive. Forgiveness is a powerful tool that makes working together with other human beings possible—and enjoyable!

Forgiveness seems to have been overlooked by many.

Furthermore, I believe that the UCG crisis is a wake up call, a “knocking on the door” (cf. Revelation 3:20) if you will, for those in or formerly in UCG.  Yet, it seems that most who are or were part of UCG have not truly understood this as a warning as they have tended to be satisfied with a work that was not hot (Revelation 3:14-17). This crisis affecting UCG/COGWA could be part of the final warning to those who have rejected Philadelphia-era governance and gospel proclamation priorities to get them to consider their state (Revelation 3:17-19).

Also notice something that Isaiah was inspired to write:

8 Now go, write it before them on a tablet,
And note it on a scroll,
That it may be for time to come,
    Forever and ever:
9 That this is a rebellious people,
    Lying children,
    Children who will not hear the law of the Lord;
10 Who say to the seers, “Do not see,”
    And to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us right things;
Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits.  (Isaiah 30:8-10)

Many people prefer to hear “smooth things”, but I believe that pointing out these matters shows love as Jesus seemed to have pretty strong messages in the end for the people of God (cf. Revelation 3, the entire chapter).

If you are or were part of UCG and are confused about what to do, please pray, fast, and study the Bible about this.  Note: I am not trying to say, by quoting Isaiah, that I believe that all of those in or once in UCG are intentionally lawbreakers or “Lying children”, but basically that all should be “zealous” as Jesus said in Revelation 3:19 and not be satisfied with something less than a Philadelphia type of work and form of church governance.

Ask yourself what are the true priorities that the Bible indicates that the church most faithful to the words of Jesus would do and act appropriately.

    Pagan Origins of Valentine’s Day

    Saturday, February 12th, 2011

    COGwriter

Are the origins of Valentine’s day clearly pagan?

The old World Book Encyclopedia (Valentine’s Day. Volume 19. 1966, pp.205-206) states,

…the customs of the day have nothing to do with the lives of the saints. They probably come from an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia which took place every February 15. The festival honored Juno, the Roman goddess of women and marriage, and Pan, the god of nature…The Romans celebrated their feast of Lupercalia as a lovers’ festival for young people. Young men and women chose partners for the festival by drawing names from a box…After the spread of Christianity, churchmen tried to give Christian meaning to the pagan festival. In 496, Pope Gelasius changed the Lupercalia festival of February 15 to Saint Valentine’s Day February 14. But the sentimental meaning of the old festival has remained to the present time. Historians disagree about the identity of St. Valentine”.

    Furthermore it also states,

LUPERCALIA…was celebrated on February 15 in honor of Faunus, a rural Italian god. Faunus was later identified with Pan, the god of herds and fertility…Priests…ran around striking all the women the met (Lupercalia. Volume 12. 1966, p.456).

The pagan being named Cupid (a supposed son of Venus) was also involved. According to pagan mythology, anyone being hit by Cupid’s arrow falls in love with the first person he/she sees. One source was bold enough to state,

The church replaced elements of various love-gods (Juno Februata, Eros, Cupid, Kama, Priapus) with St. Valentine, an imaginary Christian. A number of contradictory biographies were created for him…By taking over some of the features of the Pagan gods and goddesses, St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers…St. Valentine’s Day can be traced back to Lupercalia, the Roman “festival of sexual license” (ST. VALENTINE AND VALENTINE’S DAY, http://www.religioustolerance.org/valentine1.htm, February 6, 2004).

Does Valentine’s Day sound like a holy festival of love or a pagan holiday of lust?

More on the Origins of Lubercus, Now Known as St. Valentine’s Day

The Feast of Lubercus The first interpretation has this celebration originating as a pagan tradition in the third century. During this time hordes of hungry wolves roamed outside of Rome where shepherds kept their flocks. The God Lupercus, was said to watch over the shepherds and their flocks and keep them from the wolves. Every February the Romans celebrated a feast called Lupercalia to honor Lupercus so that no harm would come to the shepherds and their flocks. Also during Lupercalia, but in honor of the goddess Juno Februata, the names of young women were put into a box and names were drawn by lot. The boys and girls who were matched would be considered partners for the year, which began in March. This celebration continued long after wolves were a problem to Rome. — St. Valentine’s Day As Christianity became prevalent, priests attempted to replace old heathen practices. To Christianize the ancient pagan celebration of the Feast of Lubercus, the church officials changed the name to St. Valentine’s Day. To give the celebration further meaning and eliminate pagan traditions, priests substituted the drawing of Saints names for the names of the girls. On St. Valentine’s Day the priest placed saint’s names into an urn or box. The young people then drew a name from the container. In the following year, the youth was supposed to emulate the life of the saint whose name he had drawn. By the fourteenth century they reverted back to the use of girl’s names. In the sixteenth century they once again tried to have saintly valentines but it was as unsuccessful as the first attempt. While it can’t be proved historically, there were seven men named Valentine who were honored with feasts on February 14th. Of these men, two stories link incidents that could have given our present day meaning to St. Valentine’s Day…—-February 14th – The Day the Birds Began to Mate The Europeans also believed that on February 14th the birds began to choose their mates. In fact Chaucer, in his “Parlement of Foules,” wrote: “For this was Seynt Valentine’s Day when every foul cometh ther to choose his mate”…The tradition of birds choosing their mates on St. Valentine’s Day led to the idea that boys and girls would do the same. Now when a youth drew a girl’s name, he wore it on his sleeve, and attended and protected her during the following year. This made the girl his valentine and they exchanged love tokens throughout the year. Later this was changed to only men giving love tokens to females, usually without names but signed “with St. Valentine’s Love.” Later, in France, both sexes drew from the valentine box. A booked called Travels in England, written in 1698, gives an account of the way it was done: On St. Valentine’s Eve an equal number of Maids and Bachelors get together, each writes their true or some feigned name upon separate billets, which they roll up and draw by way of lots, the Maids taking the Men’s billets, and the Men the Maids’; so that each of the young Men lights upon a Girl that he calls his Valentine, and each of the Girls upon a young Man which she calls hers. By this means each has two Valentines–but the Man sticks faster to the Valentine that is fallen to him than to the Valentine to whom he is fallen. Fortune having thus divided the company into so many couples, the valentines give balls and treats to their mistresses, wear their billets several days upon their bosoms or sleeves, and this little sport ofen ends in Love. This ceremony is practised differently in different Countries, and according to the freedom or severity of Madame Valentine. This is another kind of Valentine, which is the first young Man or Woman chance throws in your way in the street, or elsewhere . . . (The Origins of Valentine’s Day. http://www.techdirect.com/valentine/origin.html, January 31, 2004).

Anyway, the preceding article mentions those three as the possible origins of Valentine’s day. Actually all three of those are to some degree correct (and World Book Online, in its article Valentine’s Day–which I checked on February 6, 2004–says that some believe that all three played a role in the origins)–Valentine’s day was a pagan holiday that the Catholic Church modified and that most Protestants embrace, which is probably why some Europeans also declared that to be the day the birds mated (birds mate pretty much every day in some part of Europe, so its seems disingenuous to coincidentally declare it on February 14).

Thus, much of Christianity Today‘s version of the “History of Valentine’s Day” appears to be a selective Protestant fantasy.

But the most likely beginning of the “holiday” seems to have to do with the beginning of the Roman Empire, and probably is prior to the third century:

Archaeologists say they have unearthed Lupercale-the sacred cave where, according to legend, a she-wolf nursed the twin founders of Rome and where the city itself was born.

The long-lost underground chamber was found beneath the remains of Emperor Augustus’ palace on the Palatine, a 230-foot-tall (70-meter-tall) hill in the center of the city…

According to myth, Lupercale is where a she-wolf suckled Romulus and Remus, the twin sons of the war god Mars and mortal priestess Rhea Silvia, who had been abandoned in a cradle on the bank of the Tiber River…

Every year on February 15 ancient priests killed a dog and two goats and smeared the foreheads of two boys from noble families with the sacrificial blood as part of the Lupercalia celebration. (Valsecchi, Maria Cristina. Sacred Cave of Rome’s Founders Discovered, Archaeologists Say. National Geographic News. January 26, 2007. January 26, 2007. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/01/070126-rome-palatine.html)

Of course, the story of Romulus and Remus is really the fable about the beginning of the Roman Empire–now that Europe is once again trying to revive this empire, I am sure that its leaders are pleased to have located “the sacred cave”.

Is Valentine’s Day A Holiday in Honor of “The Queen of Heaven”?

    Another source adds,

The roots of Valentine’s Day can be traced back to pagan festivals of third century Rome. February 14th was set aside as a day to honor the goddess Juno, who was the queen of the Roman gods and goddesses and was the goddess of women and marriage. This day was also the eve of the Feast of Lupercalia. This festival was in honor of the god Lubercus (The History of Valentine’s. http://www.christinescyberuniverse.com/VDay/VdayHistory.html, January 31, 2004).

    And who was Juno?

JUNO was the queen of heaven and wife of Jupiter (Zeus)…The ancient Greeks called her HERA (Juno. World Book Encyclopedia, Volume 11. 1966, pp.162-163).

A holiday for the queen of heaven!

What does God say about that?

…the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven; and they pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke Me to anger. Do they provoke Me to anger?” says the LORD. “Do they not provoke themselves, to the shame of their own faces?” (Jeremiah 7:18-20, NKJV)

Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying: ‘You and your wives have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled with your hands, saying, “We will surely keep our vows that we have made, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her.” You will surely keep your vows and perform your vows!’ “Therefore hear the word of the LORD, all Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: ‘Behold, I have sworn by My great name,’ says the LORD, ‘that My name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, “The Lord GOD lives.”‘Behold, I will watch over them for adversity and not for good. And all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, until there is an end to them” (Jeremiah 44:25-28, NKJV).

In other words, God was not happy that people wanted to worship the queen of heaven and He would punish them for it.

    Another source mentioned,

The Feast of Lupercalia was celebrated in honor of the God Lupercus, who was said to watch over shepherds and their flocks and kept them safe, since during this time hordes of hungry wolves roamed outside Rome. The festival was celebrated on February 15 at the cave of the Lupercal on the Palatine Hill, where the legendary founders of Rome, the twins Romulus and Remus, were supposed to have been nursed by a wolf. However, other scholars, while not dismissing the celebration of Lupercalia, prefer to explain the celebration which took place in the middle of February as a celebration to the Goddess Juno Februato. It is to their thinking linked to Valentine’s Day. While all scholars agree to the time when the practice of men drawing the names of women took place, there do exist slight differences in whose honor the celebrations took place. As time marched on, Christianity steadily gained converts and it became an officially supported religion in the Roman state under Constantine I, who ruled as emperor from AD 324 to 337. All pagan cults were prohibited in AD 392 by an edict of emperor Theodosius I. At this time, priests attempted to replace old heathen practices. The ancient pagan celebration of the Feast of Lubercus was renamed St. Valentine’s Day . The priests replaced the practice of having men draw names of girls with having young people draw names of saints. The youths were supposed to emulate the life of the saint whose name they had drawn. The practice of this custom was unsuccessful at first and reverted back to the use of having men draw names of girls (The Myth of the Origin of Valentine’s Day. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/9300/stp.html, January 31, 2004).

No matter if Valentine’s is the Feast of Lupercus/Lubercus or Queen of Heaven Juno or both (which it probably is) it is NOT listed as a Feast of the LORD (see Leviticus 23).

Christians who may be tempted to compromise need to ask themselves if the origins of Valentine’s Day are biblical or pagan.

It is of interest to note that the same Catholic source states,

The Catholic Church no longer officially honors St. Valentine, but the holiday has both Roman and Catholic roots.

It is good that the Church of Rome no longer officially honors Valentine or the holiday.

None who profess Christ should observe this February “holiday”–it simply is not a Christian holiday. It began as a pagan sexual lottery and still has sexual ramifications, even in the 21st century.

Algeria Protests and Egypt’s Next Step

Thousands in the Middle East are protesting in Algeria:

Thousands rally for democracy in Algerian capital

    AOMAR OUALI

    Algiers, Algeria— The Associated Press
    Published Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011

Thousands of riot police tried to seal off the Algerian capital on Saturday to prevent activists from holding a banned pro-democracy rally a day after Egypt’s authoritarian leader was toppled…

Under Algeria’s long-standing state of emergency — in place since 1992 — protests are banned in Algiers, but repeated government warnings for people to stay away Saturday fell on deaf ears…

The march comes at a sensitive time — just a day after an uprising in Egypt forced Hosni Mubarak to resign after 30 years in power and merely a month after another “people’s revolution” in neighboring Tunisia forced longtime autocrat Zine El Abidine Ben Ali into exile on Jan. 14.

The success of those uprisings is fueling hope for change in Algeria, although many in this conflict-scarred nation fear any prospect of violence after living through a brutal Islamist insurgency in the 1990s that left an estimated 200,000 dead.  http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/africa-mideast/thousands-rally-for-democracy-in-algerian-capital/article1904949/

Algerian protesters clash with police as Egypt fervour spreads

    The Guardian – ‎12 Feb 2011
    • Officers ordered to enforce no-protest ban in central Algiers
    • Up to 5,000 protesters rally in Yemeni capital of Sana’a
    • Arab leaders make concessions to avoid repeat of Egypt
Algerian police have beaten back up to 2000 demonstrators who tried to rally in central Algiers as aftershocks from the Egyptian revolution rumbled throughout the Middle East.

LCG reported the following in its announcements today (and it was written about two days ago):

Economic Riots in Algeria. Flour and salad oil prices have doubled in Algeria in the last couple of months. Although official government statistics place unemployment in the nation at about 10%, independent organizations place it closer to 25%. The result of increasing unemployment and increasing food prices has been rioting. Hundreds of people throughout the nation, mainly youth, have clashed with police and damaged government buildings (Guardian, January 7, 2011). Riots have killed several and injured hundreds of people. Recently, copying an act in Tunisia, several Algerian men have set themselves on fire in protest against the government (www.megharabia.com, January 28, 2011). Algeria has relative wealth because of its oil resources. In response to the recent riots, finance ministers cancelled import tariffs to lower food prices, lessening some of the violence. However, according to one Algerian official, “Our officials have excelled in creating failures; despite the financial abundance Algeria enjoys … they dealt with the social anarchy with the utmost stupidity. Rather than taking urgent measures to quell the anger, they began spreading accusations left and right, trying to find hidden elements who mobilized the street. Well, they haven’t found the hidden elements and haven’t stopped the current deviation” (TheMediaLine.org, January 9, 2011). Long ago, God warned that leaders who are concerned only about themselves and who neglect their people will encounter serious consequences (see Ezekiel 34). The discontent in Algeria is adding to the destabilization across the Middle East and North Africa.

As I have reported earlier, there have also been protests in Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia (Demonstrations in the Arab World Suggest Change), and Libya (Protests in Tunisia, Concerns in Libya).  Many of us in the Living Church of God are watching these developments, including Egypt.

As far as Egypt goes, notice the following:

    Egypt’s military pledges civilian handover

New administration would be elected, says army leadership

Last Updated: Saturday, February 12, 2011

    CBC News

Egypt’s military leaders say they are committed to eventually handing over power to an elected civilian administration that will abide by its international agreements.

The military announced Saturday it has also asked the current government appointed by ousted president Hosni Mubarak to continue operating until a new one is formed.

As I have been reporting, I believe that an interim government will likely be put in place in Egypt, followed ultimately by one that supports a pan-Arabic leader known biblically as the King of the South, but also known as the Caliph or Imam Mahdi by various ones in the Islamic world.  The stage clearly is being set for this to happen as this latest step by Egypt is consistent with that.

It may be that a somewhat secular interim government will be put in place, not deliver what the protesters want, and then the people will be more willing to accept a less secular, more religious leader.  And while a religious leader is not biblically required to be the final King of the South, traditionally it takes religion to cross national borders.  Hence this is one more reason I suspect that an Islamic-emphasizing leader is highly likely to be the King of the South.

Notice what one Muslim wrote about the appearance of their Mahdi:

SIGNS BEFORE HIS APPEARANCE AS THE MEHDI

The world will be filled with a great amount of injustice and oppression. There will be widespread evil in which all people will be heavily involved.

Muslim countries and their people will have become so weak that even animals would defeat them in battle.

Muslims would be totally disunited, hence their state of weakness. On the other hand, the Kuffar of the whole world would be united under one leader…

Throughout the world earthquakes would occur frequently. Innocent people will be put to death…

I would suggest that the protesters in the Middle East believe that they have been subject to injustice and oppression.  If an earthquake happens in the region, it would seem that some may consider that to be a sign for the leader to rise up.

Yet, while it may also take a war in the Middle East for this leader to rise up, civil unrest, riots, demonstrations, and protests may also be involved. Things are changing in the Arab world. And events are lining up for the King of the South/Imam Mahdi to arise.

Some suspect this Mahdi may appear in 2012:

As the Koran states the Mahdi will not return in an odd-numbered year, as world chaos is to precipitate his reappearance, as Ahmadinejad claims the Mahdi’s return will occur before his presidency ends in 2013, as a dying Khamenei claims the return will happen before his death, and as Iran stands on the brink of arming itself with nuclear weapons, Khamenei and Ahmadinejad view the planets as all falling into alignment for them.

From the vantage point of these two fanatics, 2012 may be shaping up as the year of the Mahdi’s return.

(Zumwalt J. Iran’s Dynamic Duo Dedicated to Global Destruction. August 13, 2010. http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=38528)

R.C. Meredith of the Living Church of God (LCG) wrote:

The final fulfillment of the prophecies about the coming King of the South are certainly yet to come. But, even now, it is obvious that many events now indicate that the stage is being set for the powerful Muslim leader indicated in Daniel 11:40–43. Our…constant backing of the state of Israel, and many other acts by the U.S. and Europe, have infuriated the Muslim world. The current situations in Israel and Iraq are causing the Arab world to unite in a manner unprecedented in recent times. This will certainly carry over into their backing for a truly powerful pan-Arab leader when God’s time comes.

And the current riots and protests also seem to be pointing in that direction. There will also be more riots in Europe and even some in the USA, but the ones in the Middle East are the ones that will apparently set the stage for the rising up of the final King of the South.

COGWA Hires 59, UCG to Have 50 Public Lectures

    Friday, February 11th, 2011

    COGwriter

Late today, both COGWA and UCG posted letters about some of their happenings.

    COGWA’s Clyde Kilough reported:

We are also very pleased that we were able to hire 59 employees this week—most of them pastors and a few office personnel. In addition, we have committed to taking care of the financial needs of the widows and retirees who have stepped out on faith in being with us. Nearly all of those we hired have been out of work for at least six weeks, some for several months.  Nevertheless, they continued to serve as much as before, but that obviously could not last forever. All of these men and women have been dedicated to serving the needs of the Church, in spite of suffering financial loss to do so, and we deeply appreciate their sacrifice. At this point we are not able to pay them according to their true worth or previous standard, but we hope that in time that can change.

So, COGWA is hiring but still seems to have tight finances.

    UCG’s Aaron Dean reported:

The Good News Kingdom of God Seminars will:

    1. Be held every four months simultaneously in 50 U.S. locations. (In addition, international offices may be able to “piggy back” off the U.S. media and advertising effort, especially since the Sabbath seminar will be advertised in the Good News magazine and on our Web site.)

UCG reported that it had some tight finances yesterday, but also that since it had reserves that it has been able to function.

As I reported before, it is interesting that UCG now seems to wish to follow LCG’s lead and have public lectures.

LCG calls its public lectures TWSPs.  Here is a report on them from Richard Ames:

In 2010, Living Church of God ministers conducted 102 Tomorrow’s World special presentations (TWSPs) in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and parts of Europe and Africa. Along with thousands of you brethren and co-workers, more than 3,400 new visitors came to these presentations, where they heard the Gospel preached with power. (Ames R. Co-Worker Letter, January 14, 2011).

LCG also had several TWSPs in 2011 so far.

This crisis has been a real struggle for those in or once part of UCG as parties on both sides seem to be offended by the actions of those on the other side. This split is also seems to be causing financial tensions for the two primary groups affected. It is also causing confusion.

If you are or were part of UCG and are confused about what to do, please pray, fast, and study the Bible about this.

Ask yourself what are the true priorities that the Bible indicates that the church most faithful to the words of Jesus would do and act appropriately.

Armstrong expect from evangelists?

Mubarak Resigns and Turns Power to Egypt’s Military, Field Marshal Tantawi

    Friday, February 11th, 2011

Egypt’s President Mubarak has reportedly resigned:

Mubarak resigns, hands power to the military

    USA Today – Douglas Stanglin – ‎11 February 2011

Here is the full statement that a grim-looking Vice President Omar Suleiman delivered on Egypt state TV announcing President Mubarak’s resignation:

In these grave circumstances that the country is passing through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to leave his position as president of the republic. He has mandated the Armed Forces Supreme Council to run the state. God is our protector and succor.

Update at 11:30 am ET: The White House says President Obama will make a statement on the Egyptian developments at 1:30 pm ET. Update at 11:27 am ET: Al-Jazeera correspondent Sherine Tadros, reporting from Tahrir Square…

The Muslim Brotherhood had earlier Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak and his Vice Presidential designee Omar Suleiman (see Muslim Brotherhood Rejects Egypt’s President and V.P.).

Someone else seems to be in charge now:

Hussein Tantawi, head of Egypt’s Higher Military Council
    Reuters – Feb 11, 2011
Egypt’s Defence Minister Mohamed Hussein Tantawi is the head of the Higher Military Council that took control of Egypt after Hosni Mubarak resigned his post as president on Friday…* Tantawi holds the rank of Field Marshal and has served in the government of Egypt as minister of defence and military production since 1991 and a general commander for the armed forces since 1995.

    * Tantawi has served in three wars against Israel….

    * He was appointed deputy prime minister, in addition to his post as defence minister, after Mubarak sacked his cabinet in a failed attempt to calm mass protests on Jan. 29.

    * His military background and seniority had led to speculation he could be a possible runner for presidency, though some analysts said he had limited support among the armed forces’ rank and file. http://af.reuters.com/article/egyptNews/idAFLDE7192I620110211

All of this is likely to end up with an interim government that ultimately will be replaced by some type of Islamic government that will ultimately support a pan-Arabic leader.  The coming King of the South, apparently referred to as the Imam Mahdi and/or Caliph in various Muslim writings, is getting closer to rising up.

For the past couple of years I personally have wondered how a pan-Arabic entity would form–and I never considered that US-style democracy was the way. And over the past couple of years at least two pan-Arabic unions have somewhat formed. One is the Union of Mediterranean States which includes nearly all the Arab nations in somewhat of a pack with Europe. The other is the monetary union that the Gulf-oil states have been working on (on December 15, 2009 Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar announced the creation of a Monetary Council to come up essentially with their own currency and to get away from the US dollar).

The tie of religion, which has existed for centuries among most of the Arabs, has always been in the back of my mind. There have been supranational groups like the Taliban, Al Qaeda, Hamas, and the Muslim Brotherhood, but the time was not right for any of them to bring about pan-Arabic unity. The first three groups have tended to be considered too radical, while many have considered that the Muslim Brotherhood was not radical enough (though this seems to be changing). The Muslim Brotherhood, which was formed in Egypt in 1928, has long been banned in Egypt (which is why its members/leaders are sometimes jailed there).

As far as what the Muslim Brotherhood wants to accomplish, Wikipedia reports:

In the group’s belief, the Quran and Sunnah constitute a perfect way of life and social and political organization that God has set out for man. Islamic governments must be based on this system and eventually unified in a Caliphate. The Muslim Brotherhood’s goal, as stated by Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna was to reclaim Islam’s manifest destiny, an empire, stretching from Spain to Indonesia.

In today’s, TW News & Prophecy, LCG reported the following:

Amid current turmoil in Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Yemen, Sudan, and Lebanon, Jordan’s government is also in upheaval. Reacting to protests, King Abdullah II of Jordan fired his government two weeks ago, tasking his new prime minister with “quickly boosting economic opportunities and giving Jordanians a greater say in politics.” The new Prime Minister is a former Prime Minister (2005-2007) and former general who is pro-U.S. and also pro-Israel.

In reaction, the primary opposition group in Jordan, the Muslim Brotherhood, noted that the king’s “changes to laws affecting politics and public freedoms” are just cosmetic and are not “real” changes. The Brotherhood is also pushing for cuts to the king’s power (Associated Press, February 1, 2011).

Turmoil and unrest appear to be spreading like a virus across the Middle East. This region is becoming “ripe” for a strong leader to come on the scene–perhaps a future king of the South? God predicted through His prophet David, that a confederation of Arab nations would arise at the end of the age and would include Germany/Assyria–ultimately opposing the Israelite-descended nations (Psalm 83:1-8). This could be the turmoil from which comes a “semblance” of order in the Arab world.

One day soon Christ will return and set up a totally righteous government of peace, where all who work hard will have plenty to eat and will never again need to distrust their government. God speed that day!

To bring enough Arab nations together, I have felt that some type of “strongman” needed to rise up. One who Arabs would tend to respect. The time may be now and the Muslim Brotherhood may play an important role. The Muslim Brotherhood is is the world’s oldest and largest Islamic political group and has been called the “world’s most influential Islamist movement” (http://english.aljazeera.net/indepth/2010/11/2010111681527837704.html)–though some other group could emerge or form.

We in the Living Church of God have long expected such a leader, as have many Arabs:

The supreme office of caliph, originally elective, became hereditary…Eventually…caliphs became figurehead or “puppet” leaders…Many Arabs…seek to re-create the political and theological unity of the early Islamic caliphate (The Arab World in Prophecy. Plain Truth, December 1979, pp. 9-10).

Al Qaeda named its Internet newscast, which debuted in September, ‘The Voice of the Caliphate.’…Kerem Acar, a tailor in central Istanbul {said} ‘…one day maybe my children’s children will see someone declare himself the caliph, like the pope, and have an impact’” (January 14, 2006). Indeed, a coming “Mahdi” whose arrival Muslims are expecting—in Bible prophecy known as the “King of the South” (Daniel 11:40–45)—will soon arise and have a dramatic impact on world events. This powerful Muslim religious leader will unite many of the more than one billion Muslims. He will pose a genuine threat to the coming European Empire, which will have to crush that threat in order to continue exploiting Middle Eastern oil to further its military ambitions. (Meredith RC. Prophecy Fulfilled: God’s Hand in World Affairs. LCG Booklet, 2007, pp. 16-17)

The timing seems to be right for such a leader to start rising up. The events in Egypt, Lebanon, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen, and elsewhere seem to be setting the stage of the Arabic peoples to be willing to consider some type of confederation with a strong leader to represent them.

If protests continue in the Middle East, this could trigger other events which will lead to the King of the South gaining power (though Iran/Israel may play a major role).

Some articles of possibly related interest may include:

COGWA Lists 195 Congregations, Larry Salyer, & Peter Hawkins

    Friday, February 11th, 2011

    COGwriter

COGWA has completely revamped the appearance of its website and has also updated the congregations on its webpage. It has listed 93 in international areas, plus 102 congregations in the United States.

Jim Franks stated two weeks or so ago that COGWA has more USA congregations than have thus far been listed.  This must be a serious blow to UCG as it appears that all the ministerial names I recognize were all part of UCG this time last year.

For the first time, Larry Salyer is listed on the congregation’s page with the Ruston, Louisiana congregation (his name did not appear on the COGWA webpage anywhere prior to this when I checked in the past).

Larry Salyer resigned his media position in UCG last April and around November 2010 co-founded a group called COG-America with Leon Walker and Ken Giese.  COG-America seemed to have been disbanded about when COGWA formed.  Larry Salyer was once the Director of Church Administration for the Global Church of God and was instrumental in its takeover in 1998 as well as its subsequent dissolving.   He led about 10-15% of the old GCG into UCG over a decade ago–and now he is part of COGWA.

COGWA seems to be the largest group to form from the UCG (former UCG President David Hulme’s COGaIC had been the largest breakaway group from it prior to COGWA). Former UCG president Clyde Kilough is one of COGWA’s leaders.  Peter Hawkins, former CEO of UCG in the United Kingdom who resigned on February 8, 2011, is now listed with COGWA’s London congregation.

This crisis has been a real struggle for those in or once part of UCG as parties on both sides seem to be offended by the actions of those on the other side. This split is also likely causing financial tensions for the two primary groups affected. It is also causing confusion.

    LCG’s Dr. Meredith has written:

Right now, Satan has thrown thousands of brethren in the United Church of God into division and confusion. Charges and counter-charges are being hurled back and forth between the different factions of their ministry. As a result, many brethren are trying to understand and to figure out “what to do.”

If you are or were part of UCG and are confused about what to do, please pray, fast, and study the Bible about this.

Ask yourself what are the true priorities that the Bible indicates that the church most faithful to the words of Jesus would do and act appropriately.

Concerns about Church of God, a Worldwide Association This seems to be the largest group that came out of the United Church of God. Here is some history and concerns about it.
Should the Church Still Try to Place its Top Priority on Proclaiming the Gospel or Did Herbert W. Armstrong Change that Priority for the Work? Some say the Church should mainly feed the flock now as that is what Herbert W. Armstrong reportedly said. Is that what he said? Is that what the Bible says? What did Paul and Herbert W. Armstrong expect from evangelists?
The Laodicean Church Era has been predominant circa 1986 A.D. to present. These are non-Philadelphians who mainly descended from the old WCG.

Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg wants to have more military information so he can make better military decisions:

Guttenberg to fly in Eurofighter jet
    The Local – Feb 10, 2011
German Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg on Thursday said he intended to take a training flight in a Eurofighter jet this year. He justified his plan by saying he may one day have to authorize a mission using the attack aircraft.

“You can have someone explain it to you in the abstract,” said Guttenberg. “But at the end of the day, I have to decide. The commander has to experience what happens.”

The conservative politician was speaking at an aviation conference in Bangalore, India, where he is supporting a bid by the European weapons giant EADS to sell 126 Eurofighters to the Indian government.  http://www.thelocal.de/politics/20110210-33027.html

Of course, we in the Living Church of God have long taught that a powerful army led by a “strongman” would ultimately arise in Europe. And this will be fulfilled by a single leader, known as the Beast in Revelation 13 & 17 and the final King of the North in Daniel 11. The Bible shows that the other leaders in Europe will give their power to him (Revelation 17:12-14) and that he will lead a military machine that will cause the rest of the world to marvel at (Revelation 13:3-4).

As regular readers of this page are aware, I have had my eye on Karl Guttenberg since late 2009. And he may be one to watch to rise up as the final “King of the North”.

As I wrote before, if Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg is part of a major Middle East peace deal, if he establishes armies (or a great army), and if he establishes something like a new religious order within his version of the “Catholic” faith, he likely will get more people’s attention–and even more of mine. This move to increase military cooperation among the European nations is consistent with my written prediction that he may establish great armies (or a great army) some time ago. Thus, he is a person of interest.

On the other hand, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg could simply be a rising politician, like many others. And all his intentions could be fine. We will see. But Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg does seem, to me at least, to be taking the types of steps that one who could possibly be the final King of the North would actually take.  The fact that he supports making a deal with India is of interest as I have long believed that a Hindu prophecy could have been pointing towards the acceptance of the final “European Beast power” (see 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect, pp. 62-66).

Much is happening in the world, and a leader known as the final King of the North (or Beast) in Bible prophecy, will ultimately become the leader of Europe.  And according to the Bible, he will have military abilities (Revelation 13:1-4).

    Watch (cf. Mark 13:37).
