Handwriting is on the Wall for Ronald Weinland

Well now that Harold Camping has been proven wrong (he claimed that Jesus would return on May 21, 2011), this probably has got Ronald Weinland trying to figure out what he will say and do when his own prediction that Jesus will return on May 27, 2012 will be proven false.  And since we will give him until that day ends, this gives Ronald Weinland 366 days.

Ronald Weinland posted this last week:

May 27th of 2012, will be “the Pentecost” that ushers in the greater fulfillment of what this Holy Day has always foreshadowed…The next great step in the fulfillment of Pentecost is only a little over a year away when Jesus Christ will come as King of kings to rule over this earth.

Here is the interpretation that the prophet Daniel gave of the handwriting on the wall:

24 Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.

25 “And this is the inscription that was written:

MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

26 This is the interpretation of each word. Mene: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; 27 Tekel: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; 28 Peres: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.”  (Daniel 5:24-28)

So, let us apply this to Ronald Weinland.

  1. Mene: Your days to be proven wrong are numbered, and you will be found lacking the inspiration of God that you claim.
  2. Mene: This is the second date you had stated, like Harold Camping (who was also wrong both times), so when you are wrong again will you act like him or have you truly decided what you will do this second time for being wrong?
  3. Tekel: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting.  Will you now tell the truth and publicly admit that you are not one the two witnesses or God’s prophet or apostle?
  4. Peres: Your church will be divided–will you admit you are false and try not to interfere with the lives of others and stop your deceit?

Now in his sermon March 12, 2011, Ronald Weinland stated the following:

So, if I’m not a prophet I’ll reason with you accordingly and be open with you about it…

So often for those who do not believe that I’m a prophet, the question is asked, “What will you do if these things do not come to pass?” And I’m going to answer that more fully in this particular sermon today…

So again, some cannot wait for me to say that I am not a prophet, or to say that I am a false prophet. Indeed, no one has long to wait do they? Isn’t that amazing? May 27, 2012 is not too far away and if Europe hasn’t risen by early 2012 and if China does not begin destroying the earth before that date, then the reality would be manifest much sooner, obviously. You don’t have to wait until 2012.

As far as the question they ask; what would I do? Well, first I’d repent before God and the Church. I’d acknowledge my sin and pray that God have mercy upon me for being so horribly  presumptuous.  Candidly (and some are going to really hate hearing this), I’d deeply repent of all those things that concern prophecies that I have given in the office of a prophet BUT I’d seek to hold fast to all that I believe with all my being to be true concerning the word of God. I would begin to go back through all 57 Truths (and I’d hope others would do exactly the same thing), IF… just to be open about it. I’d go back through all 57 Truths and eliminate those that are shown to be untrue, repenting as I did so; but I would hold fast to all that I believed to be true.

So, he at least seems to realize that his days are numbered.

Yet, Ronald Weinland claimed in 2008 that if the USA was not nuked by the summer of the same year that he would admit that he was a false prophet. So now, he is claiming that he will be truthful this time if he is proven to be false–which he will once again be (and of course, those that look to scripture above his words will recognize that he is already proven to be false).

Ronald Weinland did not admit that he was a false prophet in 2008 and so will he next year?  Hopefully, because he will be so wrong again, maybe less people will listen to him after May 27, 2012.

Yet, the fact that the events of the Great Tribulation have still not began has not caused enough of his followers to experience disbelief yet.  Many will sadly ignore Ronald Weinland’s own comments that you “don’t have to wait until 2012” to see that he is false.  It is already clear–he was wrong before and too many world events simply need to happen before Jesus can return and they cannot happen within the next year.

The Bible is clear that one whose prophecies do not come to pass does not speak for God:

21 “And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?’– 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him (Deuteronomy 18:21-22).

Ronald Weinland has often spoken presumptuously.

As I have been writing for years, Ronald Weinland is a false prophet and is NOT one of God’s two witnesses.  He should realize that his days are again numbered and he will be found lacking divine inspiration.

I feel sorry for Ronald Weinland and those who follow him. Hopefully now more of them will wake up. Because the main “Great Tribulation” that his followers are experiencing now is continuing to be led by the imaginations of Ronald Weinland.

The biblical Great Tribulation has not yet began and those who believe otherwise have allowed themselves to be deceived. None should follow Ronald Weinland, nor other false prophets (the followers of Harold Camping will be very disappointed in less than three months when his prediction for the return of Jesus will be shown to be false).

Those following Ronald Weinland should wake up now, and not wait until May 28, 2012 when Jesus does not return by the day before.  It is obvious now that Ronald Weinland will be wrong again.

US Debt Clock Continues to Rise

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

COGwriter

Notice the following:

U.S. NATIONAL DEBT CLOCK

The Outstanding Public Debt as of 16 May 2011 at 10:41:06 PM GMT was over 14 trillion.  This clock is updated:

$ 1 4 , 3 2 0 , 5 1 9 , 3 3 6 , 7 1 3 . 2 6

The estimated population of the United States is 310,579,590 so each citizen’s share of this debt is $46,109.02.

The National Debt has continued to increase an average of $4.01 billion per day since September 28, 2007! Concerned? Then tell Congress and the White House!

Source: http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/

Of course, I (COGwriter) do not believe that contacting Congress and the White House is the answer.  The USA exceeded its supposedly debt

The Bible teaches the following:

43 The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower (Deuteronomy 28:43).

12 As for My people, children are their oppressors, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths.” (Isaiah 3:12)

16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err, And those who are led by them are destroyed (Isaiah 9:16).

So, relying on leaders that often cause people to err is not the answer.

The Bible is clear that nations should not be accumulating debt and borrowing from foreigners:

43 The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail. 45 Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed…47 “Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and gladness of heart, for the abundance of everything, 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything; and He will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you. 49 The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a nation of fierce countenance, which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young. 51 And they shall eat the increase of your livestock and the produce of your land, until you are destroyed; they shall not leave you grain or new wine or oil, or the increase of your cattle or the offspring of your flocks, until they have destroyed you. 52 They shall besiege you at all your gates until your high and fortified walls, in which you trust, come down throughout all your land; and they shall besiege you at all your gates throughout all your land which the LORD your God has given you (Deuteronomy 28:42-45,47-52)

And it warns of sudden consequences of doing so:

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry…5 Indeed, because he transgresses by wine, He is a proud man… 6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases What is not his–how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’? 7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. 8 Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you (Habakkuk 2:3,5,6-8).

The above prophecy will be fulfilled at the time of the end (cf. “The message was true, but the appointed time was long…in the latter days, for the vision refers to many days yet to come”, Daniel 10:1,14). Daniel 8:19, 11:27,29,35 use same the Hebrew term for “appointed time” as Habakkuk 2:3, while Daniel 10, using a different term, ties the latter days to the time in Daniel 8:19. Habakkuk 2 was not fulfilled in its entirety anciently. Also, it makes little sense that Habakkuk would be directed towards the modern nation of Israel as it does not have enemy creditors. It must be a nation or group of nations with some prominence at the appointed time of the end.

The nation with the greatest debt of all time is the United States of America, and on a per capita basis may be the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Evangelist Dr. D. Winnail of the Living Church of God wrote about the suddenness of what will happen:

Handwriting on the Wall! On July 4, the United States, currently the most powerful nation in the world, celebrated 234 years of independence. The following day, on Monday, July 5, British-born Harvard professor and economic historian Niall Ferguson opened the 2010 Aspen Ideas Festival with a stark warning that the American “empire” could suddenly collapse—possibly within the next two years—due to the country’s rising debt! (Winnail W. LCG World Ahead Weekly Update, July 8, 2010)

The U.S. and the British-descended peoples have enjoyed living off the resources of the world, but the prophet Habakkuk warns: “… Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the people shall plunder you” (Habakkuk 2:7–8). (Winnail D. Sudden Calamities Ahead! Tomorrows’ World, Volume 10, Issue 5. Sept-Oct, 2008)

Hebrew prophets also warned repeatedly that the future demise of God’s chosen Israelite peoples would come “suddenly” and unexpectedly (Isaiah 9:14–15; 29:5; 30:13; Jeremiah 6:26; 15:8). Modern financial analysts realize this could happen if the nations lending to America decide to dump the dollar and call their loans. The prophet Habakkuk’s warning to the ancient Babylonians, “Will not your creditors rise up suddenly?” (Habakkuk 2:7)—may also ring true for debt-plagued nations like America and its Israelite cousins. Prophetic scripture contains a sobering message: debt and disobedience lead to the demise of nations! (Winnail, D. Debt, Disobedience and Demise of Nations. Tomorrows’ World, Volume 12, Issue 2. March-April 2010, p. 27)

Yet it is the the United States and its Anglo-allies that have loaded pledges of debt in these end times that they really do not expect to pay back. In that respect they have recently plundered many nations. And while much is owed to nations such as China, Japan, and the Arab World, the Europeans have trillions of dollars invested in the USA–money they may be disappointed to have devalued. Enough so that they may divide the land among themselves and other creditors.

While your nation probably will not repent (Anglo or otherwise), you can.  Do not wait until it is too late.

Did Early Christians Use a Eucharistic Host?

History of Early Christianity

COGwriter

Did early Christians use a round eucharistic host?

A careful comparison of what is taught in the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church along with eucharistic practices should make this clear to any truly interested in the truth.

Let’s first start out with two translations of a quote from the Apostle Paul:

1 Be ye followers of me, as I also am of Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1, Douay-Rheims)

1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1, NKJV)

The Apostle Paul is teaching that Christians are to follow or imitate him as he imitates Christ. Thus, all should be careful in this regard.

Notice what Jesus said:

6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. (1 John 2:6)

Article 3, under the Seven Sacraments of the Church in the Catechism of the Catholic Church discusses the eucharist. Section II asks and answers the question, What is this Sacrament Called? Several names are listed, including “The Breaking of Bread” (#1329).

It also states the following:

1339 Jesus choose the time of the Passover…And he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them…(Catechism of the Catholic Church. Imprimatur Potest +Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. Doubleday, NY 1995, p. 373)

Now the above is scriptural. Here are some related scriptures:

19 And the disciples did as Jesus appointed to them, and they prepared the pasch.

26 And whilst they were at supper, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke: and gave to his disciples, and said: Take ye, and eat. This is my body. (Matthew 26:19,26 Douay-Rheims)

22 And whilst they were eating, Jesus took bread; and blessing, broke, and gave to them, and said: Take ye. This is my body. (Mark 14:22, Douay-Rheims)

19 And taking bread, he gave thanks, and brake; and gave to them, saying: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this for a commemoration of me. (Luke 22:19, Douay-Rheims)

Notice, it is very clear that Jesus BROKE the bread on Passover (Pasch means Passover).

The Apostle Paul confirmed that it was the practice of the early Christians to break bread:

16 The chalice of benediction, which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ ? And the bread, which we break, is it not the partaking of the body of the Lord? (1 Corinthians 10:16, Douay-Rheims).

23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread.

24 And giving thanks, broke, and said: Take ye, and eat: this is my body, which shall be delivered for you: this do for the commemoration of me. (1 Corinthians 11:23-24, Douay-Rheims)

The Apostle Paul followed Jesus’ practice and broke bread. Furthermore, notice what The Catholic Encyclopedia teaches in its article “Host”:

…the first Christians…simply used the bread that served as food. It seems that the form differed but little from what it is in our day. The loaves discovered in an oven of a bakery at Pompeii weighed about a pound each. One of these, being perfectly preserved, measured about seven inches in diameter and was creased with seven ridges which facilitated the breaking of the loaf without the aid of a knife. (Leclercq, Henri. “Host.” The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 7. Nihil Obstat. June 1, 1910. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1910. 28 Feb. 2011 <http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07489d.htm>)

Notice the article basically says that the practice of the first Christians, which is consistent with the Bible, was to use normal loaves of bread that resemble what is still in use today. And that it was broken. (The Catholic Encyclopedia article never says where the round host actually came from, other than it was first mentioned in writing in the fourth century by Epiphanius and that earlier paintings in catacombs and bas-reliefs showed something like that. But I should state that the oldest early painting in a catacomb I am aware of has a woman, Priscilla, presiding over the ceremony, so the Church of Rome may wish to be careful about relying on that as they do not allow women to do that. Hence, the earliest picture of the eucharist host did not come from what is practiced in today’s Roman Catholicism–so the question from whence the Catholics adopted it remains.)

Thus, to have a Passover/eucharistic ceremony where they bread is not broken is certainly not imitating Jesus, the Apostle Paul, nor the early Christians. It is a change that the Church of Rome must have gotten outside of the Bible.

In the eucharistic ceremonies in the Catholic Church, the bread is not broken. Instead, it is a round host that the Catechism of the Catholic Church says can/should be worshipped and adored (CCC #1378, p. 385). Yet, there is no indication that the early Christians or the apostles did anything like that.

They only taught that the Passover bread was to be eaten.

As far as the word “host”, The Catholic Encyclopedia teaches:

The bread destined to receive Eucharistic Consecration is commonly called the host , and though this term may likewise be applied to the bread and wine of the Sacrifice , it is more especially reserved to the bread.

According to Ovid the word comes from hostis, enemy: “Hostibus a domitis hostia nomen habet”, because the ancients offered their vanquished enemies as victims to the gods. However, it is possible that hostia is derived from hostire, to strike, as found in Pacuvius. (Leclercq, Henri. “Host.”)

The word “host” (or derivatives) do not appear to be a direct translation of any of the original Hebrew or Greek that the Bible was actually written in. Hence, it does not seem to be a biblical term, but instead may have pagan ties according to certain Catholic researchers.

Perhaps it should also be mentioned that some Roman Catholic priests, like Nicholas Gruner and Paul Kramer have raised concerns about eucharistic ceremonies in languages other than Latin. Notice the following:

Latin Mass…The truth is — in English, Italian, and Spanish, among others — the vernacular translations of the consecration of the wine makes it of doubtful validity…as has been demonstrated by Father Paul Kramer in his book The Suicide of Altering the Faith in Liturgy (Gruner N. Is Antichrist Coming Next? The Fatima Crusader, 96, Autumn 2010, p. 10).

Now, in case everyone is unaware of this, it should be pointed out that the original apostles spoke Greek (cf. Acts 21:37-39) and other languages, but there is no indication that any of them used Latin in any early Christian ceremony (and even if they did, it certainly was not a widespread, or universal, practice).

Even Tertullian, the so-called “father of Latin theology” did not begin to write until around 190 A.D. Latin mass is a CHANGE. Those who are true traditionalists would realize that the Passover services was not done in Latin and there is no valid reason to insist on Latin today. Those who insist on Latin and those who use a round host are absolutely altering the liturgy of the faith of the original Christians.

Cannot those who claim to be Catholic traditionalists see this?

The use of broken bread is still observed by faithful groups in the 21st century like the Living Church of God.

“Orthodox” 16th Century Representation of the “Apocalypse”

COGwriter

In the May-June 2011 edition of its Bible Advocate, CG7-Denver’s had the following sermon adaptation from Kevin Robinson:

The instability of our world is felt in three major ways, mentioned by Jesus in Matthew 24:
Wars and rumors. It is generally agreed that the twentieth century was the most murderous period in history. And the world is getting more violent. Iran and North Korea are developing nuclear weapons, added to the countries that already have them. Our world shakes with the prospect of more violence than ever.
Famines and pestilences. World food production has  increased greatly, but many people still do not have enough to eat. Europe has a surplus, and we should waste less. While  Westerners eat to obesity, millions elsewhere starve. Our world shakes with problems of feeding its fast-growing population.
Earthquakes. In 2010, quakes devastated portions of Haiti, Chile, and Mexico. So far this year, New Zealand and Japan have suffered the same. Millions in earthquake-prone areas live in constant fear of the earth shaking beneath them — literally.
What to do in a shaking world like ours? The Church can say that earthquakes were predicted by our Lord long ago as a harbinger of much better times to come. Instead, we remain silent
about our future hope, as the world shakes in fear.
Not that the Church is totally silent. Christians are busy telling who’s wearing what and fussing about makeup, pants, and jewelry in church — while the world is shaking. We spend years convening boards, allocating resources, and laying small plans, while the world is shaking. We’re busy with inside rivalry and with who gets what position, while the world is shaking. We call meetings, massage egos, and plan the next conference, while the world is shaking.

The primary items that he discussed above were part of what Jesus referred to as “the beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:4-8) (I will see no point into going into the internal problems that he alluded to that CG7 and various other churches have here).

But Kevin Robinson left out the first of the sorrows from his list.  Jesus also warned:

4…”Take heed that no one deceives you.  5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. (Matthew 24:4-5)

FWIW, I have suspected for about a year and a half that the beginning of sorrows may have begun on September 19, 2009 as the burgeoning ecumenical movement I believe is a major part of the sorrows actually beginning.  It has mainly affected the Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Lutherans, and Anglicans so far, but inroads are being attempted with Hindus (see Zenit report Foundation Seeking More Than Hindu in India Schools) and others.

Of course, more of the sorrows that CG7 mentioned are in the process of seeing end-time fulfillment.

To quote Jesus further, He also taught:

8…And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

Look for more conflict, disasters, and probably this October (near the time of the Feast of Tabernacles), some report of famine, food shortages, and/or food inflation (cf. Revelation 6:5-6).

Where are the lost ten-tribes of Israel? Who are the lost tribes of Israel? What will happen to Jerusalem and the Jews in Israel? Will God punish the U.S.A., Canada, United Kingdom, and other Anglo nations? Why might God allow them to be punished first?

Are there non-biblical prophecies that support this idea? Who will divide those lands? Who will end up with the lands and the people?

Earthquakes and the New Testament Predictions

Earth cracked by quake in Japan (Danny Choo)

Earthquakes are happening all the time.  So, today perhaps it makes sense to look over many of the scriptures in the New Testament about them, starting with Jesus.

Jesus discussed earthquakes in His Olivet prophecy (a series of prophetic statements He made on the Mount of Olives).

Jesus taught that prior to the great tribulation, during a time called “the beginning of sorrows”, that His followers would notice earthquakes:

7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:7-8, NKJV throughout unless otherwise indicated).

8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. (Luke 21:11)

Now, these earthquakes happen prior to the start of the Great Tribulation (which is listed as beginning in Matthew 24:21, Mark 13:19, and Luke 21:23). More information on the Great Tribulation and the “beginning of sorrows” can be found in the article Can the Great Tribulation Begin in 2011, 2012, or 2013?

Notice that in Luke’s account “great earthquakes” are mentioned. Considering the death toll from Haiti’s 7.0 earthquake in 2010, it would seem that Jesus may have considered that earthquakes of that magnitude (or perhaps even a bit smaller) were great earthquakes (the USGS definition standards on classification are a relatively recent development).

Perhaps it should be mentioned that there was an earthquake when Jesus was crucified (Matthew 27:54), plus the Bible records that there was a great earthquake that removed the stone from His tomb (Matthew 28:2) and another one that freed Paul and Silas from prison (Acts 16:26).

What Does the Book of Revelation Teach About Earthquakes?

Jesus also taught more about earthquakes throughout the Book of Revelation (also known as the Book of the Apocalypse). One aspect of them in Revelation is that the term for earthquake is always singular in it, as opposed to the plural term for earthquakes that were associated with the beginning of sorrows that Jesus referred to during His Mount of Olives discourse.

Here is the first time an earthquake is mentioned in Revelation:

5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake. (Revelation 8:5)

This particular earthquake happens after the great tribulation began and is just prior to the start of the day of the Lord. Many people consider that when the earth quakes, it may be apocalyptic.

The next mentioned earthquake may be the second to last sequentially:

11 Now after the three-and-a-half days the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 And they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” And they ascended to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies saw them. 13 In the same hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. In the earthquake seven thousand people were killed, and the rest were afraid and gave glory to the God of heaven. (Revelation 11:11-13)

The above earthquake happens the same hour that the two witnesses are raised by God. It seems to be a localized quake and this occurs near the end of the “Day of the Lord” (which is also discussed in the article Can the Great Tribulation Begin in 2011, 2012, or 2013?). More on the two witnesses can be found in the article Who Are The Two Witnesses?

The next mentioned earthquake may be the last sequentially:

19 Then the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple. And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, and great hail. (Revelation 11:19)

Because there was an earthquake during the crucifixion which coincided with a local resurrection, it may be that this earthquake will coincide with the resurrection of Christians, called the first resurrection in Revelation 20:5.

Does the Bible Predict the Big One? An Earthquake Bigger than Geologists Think Possible?

Does the Bible Predict the big one, an earthquake bigger than most geologists think possible?

Well, living in California, we often hear the idea that the “big one” an enormous earthquake will some day take place. In March 2011, when I saw “experts” discussing this, they indicated that it was not possible to have an earthquake along the San Andreas fault greater than about an 7.5-8.5 magnitude because of how the fault is laid out.

And while some in California might find that a little reassuring, the Bible speaks of a bigger earthquake ultimately coming. And California may have one or more “big ones” before this happens.

The real big earthquake in biblical prophecy is the following one:

18 And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth. 19 Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath. 20 Then every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. (Revelation 16:18-20)

Notice that the above earthquake is so big that the cities of the nations will fall. Mountains will be leveled and islands “fled away” (more on this can be found in the article Islands and Bible Prophecy). This seems to be the biggest earthquake that will ever hit the planet with humans on it.

It will be bigger than what the usual “experts” have believed was possible. It will change the planet and humble parts of humanity.

It should be noted since that apparently biggest of all earthquakes seems to take place near the end of the Day of the Lord, it probably cannot happen prior to 2018 (for more on why as well as dates, please see the articles Can the Great Tribulation Begin in 2011, 2012, or 2013? and Does God Have a 6,000 Year Plan? What Year Does the 6,000 Years End?).

These are troubling times and repentance is needed now–do not wait for more earthquakes to do so.

Might Prince William Obtain the Throne of David?

Prince William of Wales and Catherine Middleton

COGwriter

A few weeks ago was the royal wedding between Prince William of Wales and Catherine Middleton.   The royals have been in the news a lot the past several weeks.  Prince William, himself, is second in line to take the throne of David (his father Prince Charles is first).

Why do I call it the “throne of David”?

First, let’s look at some scriptures about promises that God made to David, the former King of Israel:

3 “I have made a covenant with My chosen, I have sworn to My servant David: 4 ‘Your seed I will establish forever,
And build up your throne to all generations.” (Psalms 89:3-4)

8 My mercy I will keep for him forever, And My covenant shall stand firm with him. 29 His seed also I will make to endure forever, And his throne as the days of heaven. (Psalms 89:28-29)

4 My covenant I will not break, Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips. 35 Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David: 36 His seed shall endure forever, And his throne as the sun before Me; 37 It shall be established forever like the moon, Even like the faithful witness in the sky. (Psalms 89:34-37)

5 Should you not know that the Lord God of Israel gave the dominion over Israel to David forever, to him and his sons, by a covenant of salt? (2 Chronicles 13:5-6)

5 I promised David your father, saying, ‘You shall not fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’ (1 Kings 9:5)

1 Now these are the last words of David. Thus says David the son of Jesse; Thus says the man raised up on high,
The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel:…5…He has made with me an everlasting covenant (2 Samuel 23:1-5)

Notice the following from the late Living Church of God evangelist John Ogwyn and late Herbert W. Armstrong (who helped teach him):

The Throne of David

God made a remarkable promise to King David of ancient Israel. Speaking through Nathan the prophet, God told David: “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever” (2 Samuel 7:12–16).

God explained to David that while he might punish his descendants for their sins, he would not remove the kingdom from their line as he had done with Saul. What happened to that line of kings? History records that King Zedekiah, a descendant of David, was the last king to sit upon the throne of Judah in Jerusalem. In 586bc Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took Zedekiah captive to Babylon, burned the temple, and destroyed the city of Jerusalem. Notice the statement in 2 Kings 25:7: “Then they killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, put out the eyes of Zedekiah… and took him to Babylon.”

Did God’s promise to David fail?

For the rest of the story, notice the prophecy that God inspired Ezekiel to record in Ezekiel 17. It starts out by posing a riddle that describes an eagle coming to a large cedar tree and cropping off the topmost branch. This small branch was taken to the “city of merchants” (v. 4). What is this riddle describing? Verse 12 tells us: “Say now to the rebellious house: Do you not know what these things mean? Tell them, Indeed the king of Babylon went to Jerusalem and took its king and princes, and led them with him to Babylon.”

That is not the end of the story, however. God went on to tell Ezekiel in verses 22 and 23: “I will take also one of the highest branches of the high cedar and set it out. I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and will plant it on a high and prominent mountain. On the mountain height of Israel I will plant it; and it will bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a majestic cedar. Under it will dwell birds of every sort; in the shadow of its branches they will dwell.”

We have already seen that the “top branch” of the cedar symbolized Judah’s last king, Zedekiah. A twig coming out from that branch would be one of his children. As we have also seen, his sons were killed. This “tender” twig must clearly refer to one of his daughters! God talks of her being taken to a high mountain (used in Bible prophecy to symbolize a nation) where she would be “planted” and would grow into a great tree. This shows that she would marry and produce offspring and that the dynasty would continue! Also note, while David’s line had been reigning over Judah, it would now be “replanted” ruling over Israel.

Irish history records the remainder of this story. It tells of the prophet Jeremiah and his scribe Baruch coming to Ireland after the fall of Judah with a young princess and the coronation stone, called in Gaelic lia fail. In ancient Irish records, the princess was named Tea Tephi. She married the son of the High King of Ireland. Their descendants reigned from Tara in Ireland for many centuries. Later, in the days of Kenneth McAlpine, they transferred their place of rule to Scone in Scotland. This same dynasty continues on down to today in the person of Queen Elizabeth II, a direct descendant of Tea Tephi and her husband. God has fulfilled his promises to King David just as He said! (Ogwyn J. The United States and Great Britain in Prophecy.  Living Church of God, Charlotte, 2006)

David’s Dynasty Forever

David succeeded Saul.  David sat on the Eternal’s throne.  David’s son Solomon succeeded him, also sitting on the Eternal’s throne.  “Then Solomon sat on the throne of the Eternal as king instead of David his father” (I Chron. 29:23; see also II Chron. 9:8).

I wish here to impress another special point.  Before Saul, the Eternal had been King over Israel.  These human kings were sitting upon the Eternal’s throne.  The Eternal – “LORD” – is Jesus Christ who was with the Father before the world was (John 17:5 and 1:1-2, 14).  Jesus is both the “root” and the “offspring” of David (Rev. 22:16).  Since He was the “root,” the throne was His before David was born.  David merely sat upon the Eternal’s throne.  Secondly, since Jesus was David’s lawful fleshly Son, this same throne shall once more become His right by inheritance, continuing David’s dynasty.  And so, when Christ returns to earth, David’s throne will be doubly His right!

Now we come to a seemingly incredible fact – fantastic – almost unbelievable, but true!  While David was king, God made with him a perpetual covenant, unconditionally, which God cannot and will not break!  This covenant is even more amazing, and less understood, than the unconditional covenant with Abraham!

I want you now to plant firmly in mind the specific nature and character of the covenant the Almighty made with David.  For it is a vital link in the purpose and mission of Christ – an important KEY to Bible understanding!

In II Samuel 23:1, 5, we find: “Now these be the last words of David . . . . God . . . hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure.”  In other words, a covenant that shall endure forever and cannot fail!

(Armstrong HW. The United States and Britain in Prophecy. WCG booklet)

Queen Elizabeth II is a descendant of David as are her son Charles and his son William.  The Queen seems to have had various issues with her son Charles, and while she may place him on the throne, there is always a chance that he could be bypassed for someone like William.  And even if that does not happen, if Charles is made king, William is in line to be his successor.

But no matter how many human leaders are left, it should also be mentioned that we in LCG believe that the royal family will be replaced by Jesus when He returns (and recall that Jesus Himself is specifically called “the son of David” in Matthew 1:1):

32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end. (Luke 1:32-33)

15 Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” (Revelation 11:15)

Since Jesus has not yet returned, that throne is still under control of the British royal family. But He will receive the throne His father David and reign over the house of Jacob. Jesus clearly has not done that yet (which is why the British royal family still has the throne), but Jesus will gain it relatively soon.

It may be of some historical interest to realize that when the monarch is crowned head of England, etc. the ceremony is similar to that of ancient Israel as Dr. Douglas Winnail writes:

Ancient Irish legends recount that in addition to the king’s daughters, Jeremiah brought with him “some national treasures from the Temple. The most important of these was the Lia Fail, or Stone of Destiny, Jacob’s stone” (Rogers, pp. 31–32). The Bible relates that Jacob, the forefather of the Israelite tribes, set up a stone pillar after making a covenant with God (Genesis 28:13–22). It was also a custom in ancient Israel to crown kings over a stone (Judges 9:6; 2 Kings 11:12–14).

The stone was later taken to Scotland by a king Fergus, and then to England. It has been used in all three countries for the coronation of monarchs—following the ancient Israelite custom. (Winnail D. Behind the Mists of Ireland.   Tomorrow’s World magazine.  Jan-Feb 2000).

Hence we in the Living Church of God (LCG) believe that there is a connection between the old throne of Israel and the current throne of the British royal family.  And there is a chance that Prince William will sit on that throne, and a small chance that he may be the last human to do so before the return of Jesus Christ.

Harold Camping Now to be Wrong About His Third Date: October 21, 2011

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Photo in New Orleans by Bart Everson (from Wikipedia)

COGwriter

Harold Camping, while proven wrong Saturday, May 21, 2011, apparently wants to be proven wrong again:

Apocalypse still imminent: Rapture now coming in October

Harold Camping says his prophecy that the world would end was out by five months, and the Rapture will actually take place on 21 October

Ed Pilkington in New York

He was wrong in 1994, he was wrong about May 21, 2011, and he will be wrong about October 21, 2011.

So why was he, and will he be, wrong?

The short answer is that Harold Camping allegorized away too many key scriptures. In other words, he relied on his own private interpretations and imaginations more than looking at the prophetic sequence that Jesus Himself gave in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21. It is that simple. He ignored the fact that required physical events in the Great Tribulation had not happened, nor did the signs in the heavens preceding Jesus’ return occur.

The Bible is clear that Harold Camping is not one of God’s true prophets. Notice what the Bibles recorded about prophets like Harold Camping:

21 “And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?’– 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him (Deuteronomy 18:21-22).

Harold Camping was wrong twice before and is wrong this time! People do not heed him or fear what he says!

False prophets result in an increase in scoffers, yet despite them, Jesus will return, but not in 2011 or 2012. Please do not allow false prophets to turn you aside from the prophetic and other truths in the Bible.

Turkey Appears Prophesied to Betray Israel and Arab World

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Ruins of Smyrna (Izmir, Turkey)

COGwriter

Turkey has lately seemed somewhat anti-Israel in a lot of its policies lately.  And while its relationship with the EU also seems to be a bit more strained recently, this does not mean that it will remain that way.

My wife and I have been to Turkey on three occasions and really have enjoyed it and the Turkish people.  When we discussed the EU with some Turks, basically we were told that the average Turk had little interest in the EU, but some of the political leaders were determined to move in that direction.

Since the current leadership of Turkey seems a little less pro-Western lately, it may be that little will happen with Turkey as far as being a potential nation to join the EU for some time.

The Bible indicates that the Turks (who are not Arabs, but seem to be Edom in scripture) will make a deal with the rising European power, along with the Arabs and Turkey:

4 They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation,
That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”
5 For they have consulted together with one consent;
They form a confederacy against You:
6 The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites;
Moab and the Hagrites;
7 Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek;
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
8 Assyria also has joined with them;
They have helped the children of Lot. (Psalms 83:4-8, NKJV)

But since Edom seems to escape what happens to the King of the South in Daniel 11:40-43, despite a deal with the Arabs, Turkey is apparently not a going to be a strong supporter of the final King of the South for very long.  But apparently it will be for a while.

Notice also the following:

7 Remember, O Lord, against the sons of Edom
The day of Jerusalem,
Who said, “Raze it, raze it,
To its very foundation!”

8 O daughter of Babylon, who are to be destroyed,
Happy the one who repays you as you have served us!
9 Happy the one who takes and dashes
Your little ones against the rock! (Psalms 137:7-9)

Notice that Edom wants Jerusalem destroyed (consistent with its desires in Psalm 83) and that it is considered part of the “daughter of Babylon”, which is also a term that seems to also represent the compromised religious Beast power (cf. Isaiah 47:1,8; Revelation 18:1-8; Zechariah 2:6-7).  And Turkey apparently will encourage the destruction of Jerusalem.  And while it could do that from an Islamic perspective, since the Bible tells of the King of the North entering Jerusalem and causing abominations (Daniel 11:31), it may be more supporting the King of North with its attitude and not just the King of the South.

Perhaps it should be mentioned that there are many Catholic prophecies that indicate that the Turks will become (ecumenical) Catholic:

Dionysius of Luxemberg (died 1682): With divine assistance this ruler will not only lead erring souls back to the true Faith but also deal a heavy blow to the foes of the empire; the Turks, to take away their empire and restore it to Christianity (Connor E. Prophecy for Today. Imprimatur + A.J. Willinger, Bishop of Monterey-Fresno; Reprint: Tan Books and Publishers, Rockford (IL), 1984, p.84).

Blessed Anna Maria Taigi (died 1837): Millions of men would die by the sword in war and civil strife, other millions would perish in unforeseen death. Then entire nations would return to the unity of the Church, and many Turks, Pagans and Jews would be converted and their fervour cover with confusion the original Christians. In one word she told me that our Lord was intending to cleanse the world and His Church… (Bessieres A. Wife, Mother and Mystic (Blessed Anna Maria Taigi). Nihil Obstat: Carlos Davis, S.T.L. Imprimatur: E Morrough Bernard, Westmonasteri, die Februari, 1952. Reprint TAN Books, Rockford (IL), 1982, p. 166).

Old Saxon Prophecy. “The seven-headed city, now more admirable than Jerusalem, shall be a place more desolate than Jerusalem. The Dog shall enter Germany but shall afterwards forsake his master and choose for himself a new man, whereby Scripture shall be fulfilled. This Dog shall signify the Turk which shall forsake his Mohammed and choose unto him the name Christian…But after all these things the end of the world shall approach, and there shall be heavey and pitiful days.”

Comment: The seven-headed city is probably Rome…(the comment is from Dupont personally, Dupont Y. Catholic Prophecy: The Coming Chastisement. TAN Books, Rockford (IL), 1973, pp.23-24)

Venerable Bartholomew Holzhauser: All heresies shall be banished…the Turkish Empire shall be broken up, and all nations shall come to and worship their God in the true Catholic and Roman faith (Rossi, G. THE CHRISTIAN TRUMPET, OR, Previsions and Predictions about Impending General Calamities, The Universal Triumph of the Church, The Coming of Antichrist, The Last Judgment, and The End of the World. Compiled by PELLEGRINO [Gaudentius Rossi], A Missionary Priest with Superior’s permission. Boston, THOS. B. NOONAND & CO., 1873, p. 121)

Brother Louis Rocco (19th century): In Istanbul (Constantinople) the Cross will replace the half-moon of Islamism…the Turks…will subsequently embrace the Catholic faith. (Dupont, p.76)

Thus, even though it may not always have the best relations, Catholic prophecy indicates that Turkey will ultimately align with the coming compromised “Catholic” beast power.  This is likely to happen around the time the King of the North, who is a prince first (cf. Daniel 9:26-27; Ezekiel 32:29-30) eliminates the King of the South (Daniel 11:40-43)–as this is when the Islamic “Mahdi’s” forces will apparently be defeated.

Interestingly, notice the following Catholic prophecy about betrayal:

Nostradamus: The Great Arab shall progress well forward, But betrayed shall be by the Byzantines. (Turks).

Comment on above from Catholic writer Yves Dupont: Here, we are told that Turkey will break its faith with the rest of the Arab world. (Dupont, Yves. Catholic Prophecy: The Coming Chastisement. TAN Books, Rockford (IL), 1973, p. 107).

The “Great Arab” is probably supposed to represent the Mahdi/Caliph, the final King of the South. The Turks currently control Bzantium and have for many centuries. Hence, Catholic prophecy indicates that Turkey will betray the Islamic Arabic power. Daniel 11:25-26 is clear that an ally of the King of the South will betray the King of the South. If Daniel 11:25-26 has future fulfillement (and as it seems to parallel Daniel 11:40-43 it may), it would seem that there will be close allies (like Turkey) that will betray the King of the South according to scripture as well.

Probably sometime after this, Islamic Asian nations, like Indonesia, will likely align with China and others in Asia and turn against the Europeans (for details, see Asia in Prophecy).

It may be of interest to note that there is an annual celebration for Mary in the area near Ephesus that Islamic Turks put on and participate in.   The name of Mary (or Miriam/Maryam/etc. depending on the translated spelling) is mentioned more times in the Qur’an than Jesus’ is (I have read many passages in it about her).  And while some may think that Islamic interest in Mary is odd, notice also the following:

In the Koran, the holy name of the Blessed Virgin Mary is mentioned no less than thirty times. No other woman’s name is even mentioned, not even that of Mohammed’s daughter, Fatima. Among men, only Abraham, Moses, and Noah are mentioned more times than Our Lady…Make no mistake about it, there is a very special relationship between the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Moslems!  (Cizik LJ Priest.  OUR LADY AND ISLAM: HEAVEN’S PEACE PLAN.  Soul Magazine.  September – October 2001, © 2001 The Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima, U.S.A., Inc.,  page 6 http://www.ewtn.com/library/mary/olislam.htm viewed 11/02/10)

Because of Islamic fascination with Mary, it is possible that an apparition claiming to be Mary might appear in Turkey and/or elsewhere.  This also seems consistent with another Catholic prophecy:

Blessed Maria of Agreda (died 1665): The power of Mary in the latter days will be very conspicuous.  Mary will extend the reign of Christ over the heathens and the Mohammedans (Dupont, p. 33).

St. Louis-Marie Grignion De Montfort (18th century): The power of Mary over all the devils will be particularly outstanding in the last period of time. She will extend the Kingdom of Christ over the idolaters and Moslems, and there will come glorious era when Mary is the Ruler and Queen of Hearts.(Dupont, p. 33)

Perhaps I should add that ever since the Turks took over Constantinople (now called Istanbul) in the 15th century, Eastern Orthodox Catholics have believed that Istanbul would once again embrace their religion (and likely it will embrace some version of it for a short while per Revelation 13:3-4,8).

The Bible indicates that Turkey will suffer mightily for some of its actions, including apparently how it will help destroy the Jewish nation of Israel (perhaps as venegance for what Israel might do if Iran attacks it–which is something that I have suspected in the past):

12 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Because of what Edom did against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has greatly offended by avenging itself on them,” 13 therefore thus says the Lord God: “I will also stretch out My hand against Edom, cut off man and beast from it, and make it desolate from Teman; Dedan shall fall by the sword. 14 I will lay My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel, that they may do in Edom according to My anger and according to My fury; and they shall know My vengeance,” says the Lord God. (Ezekiel 25:12-14)

15 As you rejoiced because the inheritance of the house of Israel was desolate, so I will do to you; you shall be desolate, O Mount Seir, as well as all of Edom — all of it! Then they shall know that I am the Lord. (Ezekiel 35:15)

19 “Egypt shall be a desolation,
And Edom a desolate wilderness,
Because of violence against the people of Judah,
For they have shed innocent blood in their land. (Joel 3:19)

11 Thus says the Lord: “For three transgressions of Edom, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because he pursued his brother with the sword,
And cast off all pity;
His anger tore perpetually,
And he kept his wrath forever. (Amos 1:11)

8 “Will I not in that day,” says the Lord,”Even destroy the wise men from Edom, And understanding from the mountains of Esau? 9 Then your mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, To the end that everyone from the mountains of Esau
May be cut off by slaughter.
10 “For violence against your brother Jacob, Shame shall cover you, And you shall be cut off forever. 11 In the day that you stood on the other side— In the day that strangers carried captive his forces, When foreigners entered his gates
And cast lots for Jerusalem— Even you were as one of them. (Obadiah 8-11)

17 “Edom also shall be an astonishment;
Everyone who goes by it will be astonished
And will hiss at all its plagues.
18 As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah
And their neighbors,” says the Lord,
“No one shall remain there,
Nor shall a son of man dwell in it. (Jeremiah 49:17-18)

Though, like others, salvation will be available to the Turks. But apparently because the Turks are expected to betray Israel, God has a special punishment first.

So, Turkey apparently will have serious negative involvement with the nation of Israel in a relatively short period of time.  Watch (Mark 13:35-37).

Some Differences Between the Eastern Orthodox and the Living Church of God

Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople

Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople

COGwriter

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about some of the beliefs that the Eastern Orthodox shared with the Living Church of  God (see Similiarities Between the Eastern Orthodox and the Living Church of God).

So, perhaps today would be a good time to go over some of the many differences between the groups.

Head Coverings for Overseers/Bishops/Patriarchs?

Orthodox:

The Rheims New Testament (used by Catholics, including some English-speaking Orthodox) in 1 Corinthians 11 teaches:

3. And I will have you know, that the head of every man, is Christ: and the head of the woman, is the man: and the head of Christ, is God. 4. Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered: dishonorest his head.

The Catholic Encyclopedia notes:

In the Orthodox Greek Rite (the other Greek Rites need not here be considered) a liturgical head-covering was not worn until the sixteenth century. Before this only the Patriarch of Alexandria, who wore one as early as the tenth century, made use of a head-covering, and his was only a simple cap (Braun J. Transcribed by William Stuart French, Jr. Mitre. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume X. Published 1911. New York: Robert Appleton Company. Nihil Obstat, October 1, 1911. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York).

All the Orthodox patriarchs I have ever seen photographs of were wearing head coverings of some type. And they seem to pray wearing them, thus they seem to ignore the early biblical practices and thus biblically appear to be dishonoring Christ. And while some try to tie the wearing of mitres to the Old Testament (and the Apostle John may have had some type of Levitical role prior to becoming a disciple of Jesus, and hence may have worn a mitre prior), the reality is that if the Orthodox did not adopt them until the 10th or 16th century, it obviously was not an original practice–or if it were an original practice, then they did not follow it for most of the time of their existence as a church.

Living Church of God:

Living Church of God leaders follow the teachings of the Bible, including 1 Corinthians 11:3-4. They do not pray or conduct church services wearing hats, mitres, or other head coverings. However, just like the Bible allowed the priests in the Old Testament to have beards (e.g. Leviticus 21:1-5; Psalm 133:22), church leaders can have beards or other facial coverings (though in modern times few do).

Those Orthodox male leaders wearing head coverings would appear to be dishonoring their head, who is supposed to be Christ. Hence, it may be that they are disqualifying themselves as true ministers of Christ by their head coverings.

Therefore, just seeing the appearance of any Orthodox bishop/patriarch should show people that the Living Church of God is more faithful than the Orthodox Church to the Bible and early traditions of the Church. Icons

While the early church condemned all idols and icons, the Orthodox now have a different view.

Orthodox:

“…one will not find in the early Church any clear exposition of the current Eastern Orthodox theology of icons” (Cleenewerck L. His Broken Body: Understanding and Healing the Schism Between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches (An Orthodox Perspective). Euclid University Consortium Press, Washington (DC), 2007, p. 43)

“…within Christianity itself there had always existed a ‘puritan’ outlook, which condemned icons because it saw in all images a latent idolatry…The final victory of the Holy Images in 843 is known as ‘the Triumph of Orthodoxy’…One of the distinctive features of Orthodoxy is the place which it assigns to icons. An Orthodox church today is filled with them…An Orthodox prostrates himself before these icons, he kisses them and burns candles in front of them…Because icons are only symbols, Orthodox do not worship them, but reverence or venerate them…icons form a part of Holy Tradition…The Iconoclasts, by repudiating all representations of God, failed to take to full account the Incarnation” (Ware, pp. 31-33).

The first Sunday in Lent, commemorating the definitive restoration of holy ikons in 843 at the end of the iconoclast controversy, is known as the ‘Sunday of Orthodoxy’ or the ‘Triumph of Orthodoxy’ (The Philokalia, Volume 4: The Complete Text; Compiled by St. Nikodimos of the Holy Mountain & St. Markarios of Corinth. G.E.H. Palmer (Translator), Philip Sherrard (Translator), Kallistos Ware (Translator). Faber & Faber, January 31, 1999, p. 287).

“The Orthodox Church uses icons for veneration with the understanding that the respect is paid not to the material icon but to the person represented “in spirit and truth”…The Seventh Ecumenical Council (787 and 843) decreed the use of icons, following in the main the teaching of St. John of Damascus” (Litsas FK. A Dictionary of Orthodox Terminology – Part 2. http://www.goarch.org/en/ourfaith/articles/article9152.asp 8/27/05) .

Icons are absolutely central to Orthodoxy, distinguishing it from both Catholicism and Protestantism. In the Orthodox calendar, the first Sunday of Lent celebrates the Triumph of Orthodoxy, a commemoration of the final triumph of icons in the long and bitter battle with the iconoclasts (literally, “image-smashers”) on March 11, 843. Included in this liturgy is an anathema on all those who reject icons.

Timothy Kallistos Ware…”In every Orthodox church the sanctuary is divided from the rest of the interior by the iconostasis, a solid screen, usually of wood, covered with icons…Orthodox churches are full of icons…When Orthodox people enter a church, their first action will be to buy a candle, cross themselves, kiss the icon, and light a candle in front of it…(Clendenin, pp. 17,18)

the church, through the voice of its councils and its hierarchs, ordains that icons be painted as they were formerly painted by the holy iconographers” (Clendenin, p. 50).

The Orthodox Church has a book called The Synaxarion which contains stories, handed down through some type of tradition, about early church leaders. The Synaxarion seems to have been composed between the ninth and eleventh centuries and apparently was motivated by the Orthodox devotion to icons:

The iconoclast heresy of the eighth and ninth centuries was directed against veneration of saints as well as against their holy images and, in general, opposed the presence of any intermediary between ourselves and God. The Orthodox reacted by attaching even more importance to veneration of the saints. Once the heresy was overthrown, they covered the walls of the churches with icons, were zealous in writing long lives of the heroes of Orthodoxy and completed the calendar and the Church service. The holy hymnographers of the Monastery of the Stoudion, Saint Theodore, Saint Joseph and others, ordered our Church services in the form they have retained ever since. After the sixth ode of the Matins canon, because of the number of hymns, the reading of the lives of the saints of the day was restricted to brief notices, called the Synaxarion, as a vestige of the practice of the first liturgical assemblies. From the ninth to the eleventh century, the compilation of the short notices that appear in the Synaxarion was completed (Hieromonk Makarios of Simonos Petra, Mount Athos. Introduction to The Synaxarion: The Lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church. From Volume One of The Synaxarion: The Lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church. Published by the Holy Convent of the Annunciation of Our Lady, Ormylia (Chalkidike, Greece), 1998. From http://www.orthodoxinfo.com/general/synaxarion_intro.aspx 03/31/06).

Perhaps it should be mentioned that the earliest “portraits” of the Apostles Peter, Paul, Andrew, and John that have been found date from the late fourth/early fifth century according modern researchers such as Professor Fabrizio Bisconti, the head of archaeology for Rome’s numerous catacombs (Oldest portraits of Christ’s apostles found.  Reuters, June 23, 2010.  http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/06/23/2934293.htm?section=justin viewed 06/23/10). Despite this fact, notice the following from Eastern Orthodox scholar Leonid Ouspensky:

The Orthodox church has never accepted the paintings of icons according to the imagination of the artist or from a living model, which would signify a conscious and total break from the prototype.  The name which the icon bears would then no longer correspond to the person represented, and this would be a flagrant lie which the church could not tolerate…The ancient iconographers knew the faces of the saints as well as they knew those of their close relatives.  They painted them from memory or by using a sketch of portrait…all kinds of accounts, and particularly sketches…were preserved on icons. (Ouspensky L.  Theology of the Icons.  Translated by Anthony Gythiel and Elizabth Meyendorf, 1992. As cited in Clendenin, p. 48)

But theological scholar Daniel Clendenin commented that at least part of the above was false as well as made other related comments:

This general rule has frequently been broken or abused in the past few centuries. (Clendenin D.B. ed. Eastern Orthodox Theology, 2nd ed. Baker Academic, 2003, p. 48)

This is no archaic, dusty doctrine, either. Recently I worshiped at an Orthodox church in Palo Alto on this celebration of the Triumph of Orthodoxy. In his homily, Father Vladimir explained the history and theology of icons, adding that the heresy of iconoclasm was alive and well…

Icons are not merely sacred art. Rather, they are a source of revelation. According to the Second Ecumenical Council of Nicea in 787, icons are of equal benefit as Scripture in presenting the gospel message. What Scripture proclaims by word, the icon proclaims by color. Thus, when an Orthodox believer once asked why his church did not do more doctrinal teaching, his priest responded, “Icons teach us all that we need to know.” Icons are, quite literally, a “theology in color.” (Clendenin D. Why I’m Not Orthodox. January 6, 1997. Copyright © 1997 Christianity Today)

Living Church of God:

“Man is incomplete, having cut himself off from the true worship of the true God. Yet he is to worship that God alone: “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:3). The second commandment tells us how to worship the true God, what pitfalls to avoid in our worship, and of the continuing blessing or penalty that comes to our progeny as a result of the way in which we worship Almighty God. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord [Eternal] your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments” (Exodus 20:4–6). The natural physical mind cries out for something to help in the worship of God. Physical human beings want some physical object—some “aid” to worship—to “remind” them of the invisible God. Yet that is exactly what is forbidden in this commandment! Jesus said: “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth: for the Father is seeking such to worship Him” (John 4:23). Notice that it is only the “true” worshipers who are able to worship the Father in spirit and truth. Many others attempt some form of worship but, because they limit their worship by a false concept of God, it is largely in vain. “God is Spirit: and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (v. 24). The instant that human beings set up any representation of God, they deny what is essential in God. God is the essence of all power—all wisdom—all love. God is limitless. When a man invents his own mental or physical image of God, he automatically limits in his own thought and worship the God who will not be limited!” (Meredith RC. The Ten Commandments. LCG Booklet).

“Thousands of professing Christians employ representations or pictures of a so-called Jesus Christ in their worship—and even display them in their homes. What does your Bible say about such pictures? First of all, the second commandment itself obviously prohibits the use of anything that represents God or could easily become an object of worship. Certainly, since Jesus Christ is God (Hebrews 1:8), this would directly prohibit any picture or likeness of His person! In addition, for those who might wish to “reason” or argue about this point, these so-called pictures of Christ have no similarity whatever to the way Jesus Christ really looked! Jesus—when in human flesh—was a Jew (Hebrews 7:14). The features in most of His supposed pictures are obviously not Jewish! As the Word of God, Christ inspired the Apostle Paul to write: “Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him?” (1 Corinthians 11:14). Yet these pictures invariably show a man with long hair, soft feminine features and a sentimental, sanctimonious look in His eyes. This is not the Christ of your Bible!” (Meredith RC. The Ten Commandments. LCG Booklet).

The Bible and some considered as early saints and/or “fathers” by the Orthodox condemned idols. This is documented in an article titled What Did the Early Church Teach About Idols and Icons? We in the Living Church of God do not believe that icons are needed for the gospel message, nor are they at a level related to scripture.

Perhaps I should add that when I spoke to an Eastern Orthodox scholar and priest about this on July 8, 2009, he clearly admitted to me that there was no veneration of icons by Christians in the second century. He (correctly) stated that the acceptance of icons was essentially a slow development. My response was to the effect of, “The Orthodox claim to be the original faith that has not been corrupted by changes that Rome and others adopted. Obviously the adoption of icons, Easter Sunday, anti-millenarianism, etc. were changes. Hence, the Orthodox should look into the practices and beliefs of the faithful in the true early second century church, which are the beliefs and practices of the Living Church of God.”

Tradition

Orthodox:

“While the Bible is treasured as a valuable written record of God’s revelation, it does not contain wholly that revelation. The Bible is viewed as only one expression of God’s revelation in the on-going life of His people. Scripture is part of the treasure of Faith which is known as Tradition. Tradition means that which is “handed on” from one generation to another. In addition to the witness of Faith in the Scripture, the Orthodox Christian Faith is celebrated in the Eucharist, taught by the Fathers, glorified by the Saints, expressed in prayers, hymns, and icons; defended by the seven Ecumenical Councils; embodied in the Nicene Creed, manifested in social concern; and, by the power of the Holy Spirit, it is lived in every local Orthodox parish” (Fitzgerald T. Teachings of the Orthodox Church. Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. http://www.goarch.org/en/ourfaith/articles/article7062.asp 8/21/05).

“Orthodox are always talking about Tradition…It means the books of the Bible; it means the Creed; it means the decrees of the Ecumenical Councils and the writings of the Fathers; it means the Canon, the Service, Books, the Holy Icons — in fact the whole system of doctrine, Church government, worship, spirituality and art which Orthodoxy has articulated over the ages…Note the the Bible forms a part of Tradition. Sometimes Tradition is defined as the oral teachings of Christ, not recorded in writing by His immediate disciples. Not only non-Orthodox but many Orthodox writers have adopted this way of speaking, treating Scripture and Tradition as two different things, two distinct sources of Christian faith. But in reality there is only one source as Scripture exists within Tradition. To separate and contrast the two is to impoverish the idea of both alike…Among the various elements of Tradition, a unique pre-eminence belongs to the Bible, to the Creed, to the doctrinal definitions of the Ecumenical Councils: these things the Orthodox accept as something absolute and unchanging, something which cannot be cancelled or revised. The other parts of Tradition do not have quite the same authority” (Ware, pp. 196-197).

Yet it also acknowledges,

“Jesus said in the Matthew passage that the tradition of men produced hypocrisy and even vain worship” (Gillquist, p.67).

But also teaches,

“Tradition is there not just to preserve the Bible but to interpret it” (Gillquist, p.76).

Living Church of God:

“We believe that if religious people say they “believe” in the God of the Bible, they should really teach and believe what the Bible actually says.

..Although most western nations profess Christianity, do they get their version of “Christianity” from the Bible, or from human tradition?

…it is good to be sure that we understand what the Bible really saysnot what people tell us the Bible says. For, if you are careful with this and truly honest, you will find that most of the churches of this world do not really understand the Bible or teach it in this way at all. Most individuals and religious organizations are more concerned with “tradition,” and “going along” with what the majority thinks, than they are with genuinely studying and then living by every word of the Bible—with the Old Testament, of course, magnified and interpreted by the New Testament” (Meredith RC. The Bible or Human Tradition? Tomorrow’s World. LCG Magazine. September-October 2004).

Even some who the Orthodox consider to have been early saints (such as Melito and Irenaeus) condemned tradition when it conflicts with scripture.

Furthermore, the Bible warns that eventually those who accepted the traditions of idols will realize that they have inherited lies. Notice what God’s prophet Jeremiah was inspired to write:

From the ends of the earth and say, “Surely our fathers have inherited lies, Worthlessness and unprofitable things.” Will a man make gods for himself, Which are not gods? ”

Therefore behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know My hand and My might; And they shall know that My name is the LORD (Jeremiah 16:19-21).

Thus the time will come, and it has not yet come, that the vast majority of those whose religion is based upon traditions that contradict the Bible will realize that they have inherited lies. Once they realize that, God will then cause them to know Him.

Do you want to wait until then to know God or do you want to know God now?

We in the Church of God believe that Scripture itself provides the answers about reliance on tradition.

Eucharist/Lord’s Passover

Orthodox:

“the Eucharist is offered. This sacrament is performed by a bishop or a presbyter using leavened (never unleavened) bread… (Clendenin, p. 28).

Living Church of God:

“At the end of Jesus’ human life, Luke tells us: “Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed. And He sent Peter and John, saying, ‘Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat…. ’ Then He said to them, ‘With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer’” (Luke 22:7–8, 15)…Also, the Apostle Paul clearly commanded the Gentile Church at Corinth to observe the Days of Unleavened Bread. Speaking of these days, Paul wrote: “Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us KEEP THE FEAST, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth” (1 Corinthians 5:7–8). Paul was obviously speaking of “keeping the Feast” of Unleavened Bread…First comes the solemn observance of Christ’s suffering and death on our behalf. The Bible calls this the “Passover.” It pictures our acceptance of Christ’s broken body and shed blood, which He offered as our Savior. But remember, this is only the first step in God’s Plan for us! Next, we need to GROW in grace and knowledge (2 Peter 3:18) and begin to put our old sinful ways and habits completely out of our lives. This “overcoming” process is pictured by the Days of Unleavened Bread (Meredith RC. THE HOLY DAYS—God’s Master Plan. LCG Booklet, on-line version c. 2006).

There is no indication in the biblical text that leavened bread was ever used, which is why the Living Church of God (LCG) uses unleavened, and never leavened, bread. Why the Orthodox intentionally use leavened bread in violation of the practice of Jesus and Paul is unclear to this writer–especially since early Christians, including leaders recognized by the Orthodox kept the Days of Unleavened Bread (for details, please see Should Christians Keep the Days of Unleavened Bread?).

Worship Calendar

Orthodox:

“One of the major characteristics of the Byzantine liturgical tradition is the wealth and variety of hymnodical texts marking the various cycles of the liturgical year. A special liturgical book contains the hymns for each of the main cycles. The daily cycle includes the offices of Hesperinos (Vespers), Apodeipnon (Compline), the midnight prayer, Orthros (Matins), and the four canonical “hours”–i.e., offices to be said at the “First” (6:00 AM), “Third” (9:00 AM), “Sixth” (12:00 noon), and “Ninth” (3:00 PM) hours. The liturgical book covering the daily cycle is called the Horologion (“The Book of Hours”). The Paschal (Easter) cycle is centered on the “Feast of Feasts”–i.e., of Christ’s Resurrection; it includes the period of Great Fast (Lent), preceded by three Sundays of preparation and the period of 50 days following Easter. The hymns of the Lenten period are found in the Triodion (Three Odes), and those of the Easter season in the Pentekostarion (called the “Flowery Triodion”). The weekly cycle is the continuation of the Resurrection cycle found in the Triodion and the Pentekostarion; each week following the Sunday after Pentecost (50 days after Easter) possesses its own musical tone, or mode, in accordance with which all the hymns of the week are sung. There are eight tones whose composition is traditionally attributed to St. John of Damascus (8th century). Each week is centered around Sunday, the day of Christ’s Resurrection. The Easter and weekly cycles clearly dominate all offices of the entire year and illustrate the absolute centrality of the Resurrection in the Eastern understanding of the Christian message. The date of Easter, set at the Council of Nicaea (325), is the first Sunday after the full moon following the spring equinox” (Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Raska and Prizren. Worship and Sacraments. http://www.kosovo.com/doctrine3.html#Sacraments 8/20/05).

“In 190, the issue of Easter is in its agenda and a Synod is held, via the Eparch of Narkissos” (The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem. The Church of Jerusalem. http://www.jerusalem-patriarchate.org/en/home/homefr.htm 01/20/06).

“Orthodox Answers” reported the following Q&A:

QUESTION:

11/30/2008: Is it the Orthodox view that Sabbath has been transferred to Sunday? What is the Orthodox view on Sabbath?

ANSWER:

The Orthodox believe that Sabbath is Saturday (to this day, the Greek word for Saturday is pronounced ‘sabbado’ – as is the case in many other languages). Hence, Saturday is the old Sabbath and Sunday is the Lord’s Day or the Day of Resurrection. In the Orthodox tradition, Saturday always has the feastly character of the Jewish sabbath; it is never a strict fasting day. Moreover, it has always been the liturgical practice to serve Divine Liturgy both on Sabbath and the Lord’s Day, and this remains the case in Orthodox monasteries. However, Christians are not under the Law and they are not subjects of the Old Creation. The old Sabbath was the seal of the old creation, whereas Sunday is seal of the New Creation, the first or eighth day. For this reason, Gentile Christians have never been bound by Sabbatical laws on the old Sabbath. (Cleenewerck L, editor. Orthodox Answers: Sabbath. http://www.orthodoxanswers.org/details.asp?ID=10 viewed 06/13/09)

The Orthodox Church reports this brief explanation in one of its timelines:

193 A.D. – Council of Rome, presided over by Bishop Victor, condemns the celebration of Pascha on Nisan 14, and addresses a letter to Polycrates of Ephesus and the Churches in Asia.

193 A.D. – Council of Ephesus, presided over by Bishop Polycrates, and attended by several bishops throughout Asia, reject the authority of Victor of Rome, and keep the Asian paschal tradition (Markou, Stavros L. K. An Orthodox Christian Historical Timeline. Copyright © 2003 OrthodoxFaith.com).

Although it appears that the Orthodox Church officially began to accept Easter around 190 A.D. (as it, as a Sunday holiday, originated in Rome a few decades earlier, though the churches in Asia Minor did not accept the change from Passover on the 14th of Nisan), those in Asia Minor (where it claims apostolic succession) did not accept the Roman change.  Yet, the Orthodox Church officially made the change, based not on the Bible, but on a church council/synod.

Living Church of God:

“ANNUAL FESTIVALS PICTURE GOD’S MASTER PLAN OF SALVATION God’s annual Festivals are listed in Leviticus 23 and in Deuteronomy 16. These God-given holy days were commanded to be observed “forever” (Leviticus 23:14, 21, 31, 41). The Apostolic Church observed the annual Sabbaths (Acts 2; 12:3-4; 18:21; 20:6, 16; 27:9; 1 Corinthians 16:8). These Sabbaths will continue to be observed during Christ’s millennial rule (Zechariah 14:1, 9, 16-19). God’s annual Festivals picture the seven vital steps in His plan of salvation” (Official Statement of Fundamental Beliefs. LCG, 2004).

“1.  The Passover pictures the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the “Lamb of God” (John 1:29, 36; Revelation 5:6) sacrificed for us, (1 Corinthians 5:7). Jesus established the New Testament Passover with the symbols of bread and wine (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).
2.  The Seven Days of Unleavened Bread
typify purging the leaven of malice and wickedness out of the believer’s life, and partaking of God’s nature, the “unleavened bread of sincerity and truth” (1 Corinthians 5:6-13; Luke 12:1).
3.  The Feast of Firstfruits (Pentecost)
pictures the small harvest of “begotten” followers of Christ who will be harvested at the “first resurrection” (Revelation 20:4-5), as “a kind of firstfruits” (James 1:18).
4.  The Feast of Trumpets
points prophetically to the second coming of Jesus Christ (Matthew 24:31; 1 Corinthians 15:52; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17; Revelation 11:15-18; 19:15; Zechariah 14:9).
5.  The Day of Atonement
pictures the banishment of Satan, and man’s becoming “at one” with God (Leviticus 16:8, 10, 15-27; Revelation 20:1-3).
6.  The Feast of Tabernacles
pictures the soon-coming wonderful world under the government of Jesus Christ and His saints (Zechariah 14; Matthew 9:37-38; 13:1-30; Luke 12:32; John 7:6-14; Acts 17:31; Revelation 12:9; 20:4-6).
7.  The Last Great Day features the great judgment that will occur at the end of the millennial reign of Jesus Christ on earth (John 7:37; Leviticus 23:36, 39, 33-34; Revelation 20:11-12)” (Official Statement of Fundamental Beliefs. LCG, 2004).

“GOD’S SABBATH The Word of God reveals that “the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord” (Exodus 20:10; Deuteronomy 5:14). It is to be observed from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. It is God’s “sign” between Him and His faithful people—picturing God’s “rest” and reminding us that He is the Creator. It also pictures the Millennium—the coming 1,000-year “rest” when Christ returns as King of kings (Hebrews 4:1-4; Revelation 20:4-6). Jesus Christ, the Apostles, and the early Church always observed God’s commanded Sabbath, (Luke 4:16; Acts 17:2), and it will be observed by “all flesh” during Christ’s coming millennial rule over the earth (Isaiah 66:23)” (Official Statement of Fundamental Beliefs. LCG, 2004).

The original worship calendar for early Christians was essentially the same one used by the Jews and the Church of God.

It is important to note that the Greek term Κυριακή DID NOT mean Sunday in classical nor koine Greek, even though it does in modern Greek. The second century expression that Justin Martyr used, that has been translated as “on the day called Sunday”, was the classic Greek expression ῾Ηλίου λεγομένη ἡμέρᾳ (which literally means “Helios said day”). And he was the first known writer associated with Christianity to use that expression. Of course, the modern and classic Greek term for Sabbath, meant Saturday, then and now. The reality as those considered as “Fathers” and saints by the Orthodox Church did keep Passover on the 14th of Nisan and did not observe Lent.

The Church of the Seven Councils vs. One of the Seven Churches of Revelation 2 & 3

Orthodox:

“Constantine summoned the first General or Ecumenical Council of the Christian Church at Nicea in 325… Orthodox often call themselves ‘the Church of the Seven Councils’…Nicea was the first of the seven general councils; and these…occupy a central position in the history of Orthodoxy…next to the Bible, it is the seven councils which the Orthodox Church takes as its standard and guide” (Ware, pp.19,35).

“Why are the Seven Ecumenical Councils so important? Because they point out what the Church universally held to be the true teaching concerning the Person of of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Trinity” (Gillquist, p. 102).

“It is interesting that the Book of Revelation–although it is accepted as part of the scriptural canon–is never read during public worship” (Clendenin D.B. ed. Eastern Orthodox Theology, 2nd ed. Baker Academic, 2003, p. 81).

It may be of interest to note that a Roman Catholic scholar and historian basically has admitted that the 4th century Nazarene Christians held Christian doctrines, but that their real problem was that they would not accept most of the decisions of the Councils of Greco-Roman churches:

…the Nazarenes did not differ much in faith from the gentile Christians…

St. Epiphanius, speaking of the Nazarenes…they observed the Sabbath, and they celebrated Easter on the 14th…

They live in the city of Boroea (Aleppo), in Coelo-Syria, in the Decapolis near Pella and in Batanea in the place they call Cochabe and in Hebrew Kocabe. There name Nazarene comes from Nazareth “which today is a village in which the house of Joseph (Jesus) was educated”.

…they observe the Sabbath, but have no animal sacrifices…

St. Jerome, writing…”Nazarenes. They believe in Christ, Son of God, born of the Virgin…”

In conclusion, regarding the Nazarenes, both St. Epiphanius and St. Jerome have nothing to condemn them for except the observance of customs forbidden by the Councils (Bagatti, Bellarmino.  Translated by Eugene Hoade.  The Church from the Circumcision.  Nihil obstat: Marcus Adinolfi. Imprimi potest: Herminius Roncari. Imprimatur: +Albertus Gori, die 26 Junii 1970.  Franciscan Printing Press, Jerusalem, pp.31,34,35).

And since those councils basically wanted to enforce Sunday instead of the biblical Sabbath, Easter Sunday as a replacement for the biblical Passover, and define Catholics as those that believe in a certain type of trinity (a concept that was only held by second century heretics such as Valentinus), it should be clear to all that the “Nazarenes”, therefore were faithful to the earliest teachings of the true Church. It was the Councils that often made changes (the early church was not trinitarian–for proof, please see the article Binitarian View: One God, Two Beings Before the Beginning). We in the Living Church of God trace our history through groups like the Nazarenes.

It should also be noted that an 8th Ecumenical Council is expected:

Orthodox St. Neilos the Myrrh-Gusher (16th century): During that time the Eighth and last Ecumenic Synod will take place, which will pacify the contentions of the heretics…(Tzima Otto, p. 111).

This 8th conference will likely grant the Orthodox certain doctrinal compromises from the Church of Rome (they too are looking for an ecumenical council), but will ultimately result in the destruction from God’s judgment. Also, the fact that this synod is expected to “pacify the contentions of the heretics” suggests that the Orthodox will have to commit doctrinal compromise as well.

Living Church of God:

“God’s Church has endured through the ages. It is a “little flock” (Luke 12:32), but God has always remained true to His promise that “the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18)…the true Church of God….In the aftermath of the Council of Nicea, Emperor Constantine and his successors sought to stamp out all non-conforming brands of Christianity. Groups that refused to conform to the teachings and practices of the “established” church, which now called itself the Catholic (universal) Church of God, were viewed not merely as heretics, but as subversive enemies of the Roman state…The true Church, symbolized by a woman in Revelation 12, was forced to flee into the wilderness…Thus, the true Church would have to remain in hiding for 1,260 years following the Nicene Council. Historically, that is what happened. Though these were truly dark ages, there was a light that continued to burn. Its flame sometimes flickered, but it was never extinguished.  Several problems confront any church scholar or historian who wishes to trace the wanderings of the true Church during this 1,260-year period. This is because the true Church’s history is not about one continuous human organization. The preserved history of the Sabbath-keeping Church of God has been almost entirely written by its enemies who viewed it as heretical” (Ogwyn J. God’s Church Through the Ages. LCG Booklet, 2004).

“In chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation, Christ reveals the characteristics of the seven ages of ‘eras’ of God’s true Church. He finds some fault with most of the seven churches or ‘eras’ — but not Philadelphia…The Living Church of God…strives to retain the Philadelphian emphasis even in our Laodicean age” (Meredith RC. Where is God’s True Church Today? LCG booklet, 2005).

“The Living Church of God traces its history from the Apostolic Church in the Book of Acts (the Ephesian era) to the present. The message to the seven Churches in Revelation two and three successively shows the history of the true Church from that time forward. These seven Churches describe succeeding eras, or ages, of God’s Church. We believe that the Philadelphia era began in the 1930s, and that we are a continuation of that Philadelphia era” (Official Statement of Fundamental Beliefs. LCG, 2004).

One point that should be made here is that the Orthodox Church essentially believes that there were five patriarchs, including Rome which it now considers to be a little bit heretical (but usually only a little). Currently there seem to be about five main Orthodox patriarchs (Alexandria, Antioch, Constantinople, Jerusalem, Russian) which (with the possible exception of the Russian one) do claim a list of successors that claim at least one of the original apostles. However, the Patriarch of Constantinople (an area in Asia Minor, now Turkey) is essentially recognized as having pre-eminence over all of them (except perhaps Russian, which appears to be the largest).

It is recognized that there are various parts/branches of the true Church, with many believing that the Living Church of God is the group that best represents the remnant of the Philadelphia portion of the Church that the Apostle John wrote about.

Furthermore, it should be noted that there actually is no contemporaneous proof of the validity of the earliest portions of the lists of apostolic successors claimed by the Orthodox Churches of Alexander, Antioch, Constantinople, and Jerusalem. This is discussed in detail in the article titled Apostolic Succession.

LCG essentially teaches that since there are seven semi-consecutive Churches with different characteristics in Revelation 2 & 3, that there could not be one continuous organization. Another important differences is that the Orthodox Church teaches that the Council of Nicea was a very good thing, while the LCG has the opposite view of that Council. It is astounding that the Orthodox are taught much about the councils and relatively little about the Book of Revelation–people of the Book should know the Book of Revelation.

Perhaps I should mention that as far as I have been able to tell, the official Orthodox position on the Book of Revelation, which they call the Apocalypse is that within Orthodoxy there is “No dogmatic interpretation” (REVELATION UNVEILED UNDERSTANDING THE BOOK OF “THE REVELATION OF JESUS CHRIST WHICH HE HAS GIVEN TO HIS SERVANT JOHN”. ST INNOCENT PUBLIC LECTURES Sponsored by Russ Jones, DDS, Powerpoint p. 11) and has not been normally read in Orthodox Church services.

Now, despite that there are many obvious differences, there are some similarities between the teachings of the Eastern Orthodox and the Living Church of God.

Of course, both groups claim to have the faith of the original church that Jesus founded through His apostles. Yet, as documented here, while the Orthodox changed on other doctrines, this has not been the case for the Church of God, specifically (for details, please see Some Similarities and Differences Between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Living Church of God).

The Living Church of God has held fast to many original doctrines that the Orthodox still have, as well as many that the Orthodox ended up changing.

PCG has Psalm 83 Out of Order Because of its Iranian King of the South Position

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Gerald Flurry of the Philadelphia Church of God
Gerald Flurry

COGwriter

PCG’s Gerald Flurry, who has declared himself both a prophet and apostle, has the following in the May-June 2011 edition of the Philadelphia Trumpet:

Psalm 83 is fulfilled almost immediately after a Germany-led Europe conquers Iran and radical Islam (Daniel 11:40-43).“Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God. For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head. They have taken crafty counsel against thy people [Israel], and consulted against thy hidden [or sheltered] ones” (Psalm 83:1-3).

These enemies are conspiring against biblical Israel.

Because he falsely claims that Iran is the King of the South (see details in PCG, Iran is Not the King of the South), he misunderstands Psalm 83.

Since Herbert W. Armstrong believed that king would be Egypt and/or an Arabic Muslim leader and that Psalm 83 happens prior to the King of the South being taken over by the German-led King of the North, as that is what was published while he was alive by the church he was the physical leader of (see Is There A Future King of the South?), Gerald Flurry did not get this from Herbert W. Armstrong.

So, in my view, he got it from his own imagination.

Here is what Psalm 83 states:

3 They have taken crafty counsel against Your people,
And consulted together against Your sheltered ones.
4 They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation,
That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”

5 For they have consulted together with one consent;
They form a confederacy against You:
6 The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites;
Moab and the Hagrites;
7 Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek;
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
8 Assyria also has joined with them;
They have helped the children of Lot. (Psalms 83:3-8, NKJV)

This deal happens while the prince/King of the North is still on speaking terms with the King of the South, though they both lie to each other:

27 Both these kings’ hearts shall be bent on evil, and they shall speak lies at the same table; but it shall not prosper, for the end will still be at the appointed time. (Daniel 11:27)

In a December 1979 Plain Truth article by Keith Stump titled The Arab World in Prophecy it states

But who is the “king of the south”?…in verse 40 we skip to “the time of the end”…The verse undoubtedly found partial fulfillment in the offensive of 1896…But Mussolini did not finish the prophecy…Just as there is yet to be a final “king of the north”…there may very well emerge in the same manner a final “king of the south”–an overall leader of an Arab-Moslem confederation, possibly bearing the very title Mahdia prophetic psalm (Psalm 83) provides additional insight into the Mideast picture. Germany (Assyria in Bible prophecy) and perhaps the rest of Europe will be in league in the future with a union of Arab nations…But in the end, this European-Arab alliance will prove short-lived…And the king of the north shall come against him [the king of the south]…Daniel 11:40-41The Arab-Moslem Confederation will, of course, be thrown into chaotic disarray in the fact of invasion. (Stump K. The Arab World in Prophecy. Plain Truth, December 1979, pp. 11-12).

So notice carefully that in the above, the deal in Psalm 83 is taught to occur BEFORE the King of the North overpowers the King of the South.  So, once again, we have another change of doctrine by PCG.  A group that has claimed:

The PCG is the only Church that holds onto ALL of what Christ established through Mr. Armstrong (Flurry, Gerald and Leap, Dennis. Ezra and Nehemiah: Building God’s Temple. Booklet. 1997. p.29).

But, of course, that and some of their other claims are false.

The Apostle Paul Paul warned that there would be false apostles as he wrote:

12 But what I do, I will also continue to do, that I may cut off the opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things of which they boast. 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. (2 Corinthians 11:12-13, NKJV)

And I consider that Gerald Flurry is a false apostle and not God’s prophet. Nor have I ever considered that PCG is Philadelphian. Of course, I do not consider any of those who have declared themselves apostles this century, thus far, are true apostles.

No matter how much they boast.

Anyway, Iran is not the final King of the South, and the deal of Psalm 83 (which for obvious reasons, the details of which will not be made public) happens prior to Daniel 11:40, not after as Gerald Flurry is now claiming.

There have been many false leaders–here is some of why you should be concerned about them.
