Pope meets Turkey’s Erdoğan and ‘Mystery Babylon’ debate

COGwriter

World Net Daily (WND) reported the following:

Prophecy watchers: Why are pope, Turk leader meeting over Jerusalem?

Debate rages over biblical ramifications of future alliances, world events

WASHINGTON – Two rock stars of biblical prophecy with divergent views of future world events sat down for a three-hour debate over whether Islam or the Vatican is going to rule the world leading to the cataclysmic war that results in the return of Jesus to straighten things out.

Then last week the pope welcomed to the Vatican an Islamic world leader attempting to re-establish the Caliphate – with himself in charge. Now they agree that the meeting of Pope Francis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan could have world-shaking consequences – whoever is right.

Erdogan’s spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, said the future status of Jerusalem was high on the agenda and called for an end to racism, xenophobia, “Islamophobia” and discrimination.

The meeting has been hailed as promising “global peace.”

Taking notice of the unprecedented meeting in the Vatican between one of the world’s most powerful Islamic leaders and the head of the Catholic Church, two famous prophecy watchers – New York Times-bestselling author Joel Richardson and Bill Salus – believe the summit has “biblical significance” and potentially explosive political conseqences {sic}.

While Richardson believes the biblical Antichrist will emerge from the Islamic world, Salus believes Rome is the future “Mystery Babylon” mentioned in the Bible. http://www.wnd.com/2018/02/prophecy-watchers-why-are-pope-turk-leader-meeting-over-jerusalem/#ljZAhDVzPixeUHWX.99

While the Pope is involved in matters with prophetic ramifications, WND has a history of promoting Protestant prophecy teachers who promote various errors. WND’s founder is a Messianic and they have various issues (see Messianic Judaism Beliefs Differ from the Continuing Church of God).

Of course, all that the Messianics, Joel Richardson, and Bill Salus teach is not wrong.

Joel Richardson, for one example, is right that the Bible does not teach a pre-tribulation rapture (see Joel Richardson is actually right about the rapture, but wrong about THE Antichrist). But he is completely wrong about THE Antichrist being Islamic.

And as far as Turkey’s President and Joel Richardson goes, World News Daily reported that Joel Richardson believes that Turkey’s President Erdoğan is either the final Antichrist or essentially his close predecessor:

September 17, 2016

It’s one of the most controversial topics in Christianity. But biblical teacher Joel Richardson, the New York Times bestselling author of “The Islamic Antichrist” and the host of the new teaching series “The Battle for Jerusalem,” says he knows where the Antichrist is going to come from. And a familiar face in the headlines is, at the very least, a “foreshadow” of the Antichrist.

Turkey.

“The current president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is consolidating his power, his absolute, autocratic power, his dictatorship over this nation,” says Richardson in a new episode of his online television show “The Underground.”

“What’s unfolding in Turkey right now is incredible.”

Richardson has been a longtime critic of the Turkish strongman, whose autocratic tendencies have only grown since Erdogan crushed an attempted coup. There are even some reports the failed coup was a false flag operation because of how Erdogan has benefited from the aftermath.

Richardson argues Erdogan is taking on a quasi-divine status in the eyes of his supporters. …

Richardson concedes Erdogan himself may not be the Antichrist or the Gog of the Bible, who is prophesied in Ezekiel 38 to lead a great war against Israel. But he takes a strong stand in specifically identifying Turkey as the region from which the Antichrist will arise. …

Richardson claimed there are “dozens and dozens of examples which point to Turkey as the head, as the leader of the coming Ezekiel invasion.”

“I’m not saying that Erdogan is Gog. But I’m saying we need to be paying attention to Turkey because it’s out of Turkey, this culture, this society, this geography, this region, that I believe we will see the emergence of the Antichrist. I’m not saying Erdogan is the Antichrist. But if he’s not, and anyone could, he is certainly emerging as a clear foreshadow of the Antichrist. Even if you don’t believe in Bible prophecy, we need to be paying attention to what is happening in Turkey because the geopolitical ramifications are dramatic.” http://www.wnd.com/2016/09/turkey-source-of-the-antichrist/#UUF9wgSApISHcTGy.99

This is not possible as Ezekiel 38 is NOT to be fulfilled until well AFTER Jesus returns (see Ezekiel 38: For Russia & Iran in Our Day?).

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is not the final Antichrist, even though he wants an Islamic caliphate (see Some Doctrines of Antichrist). Nor is the final Antichrist apt to come out of Turkey.

While Turkey is mentioned in biblical prophecies (watch What Should You Know About Turkey in Prophecy), Joel Richardson completely misunderstands both the role of Turkey as well as the possible identity of the final Antichrist.

As far as the final Antichrist goes, he will be primarily a religious, not political leader. All the verses in the Bible that mention the term ‘antichrist’ or antichrists’ are referring to someone in a religious context (see 2 John 7, 1 John 2:18, 1 John 2:22, and 1 John 4:3). Furthermore, the final Antichrist will claim to be some type of Christian (in my view, he will claim to accept some changed version of Roman Catholicism).

While I believe that Bible prophecy shows that Turkey will turn against the USA (cf. Psalm 83:3-8), that does not mean that the final Antichrist has to be Turkish (that seems quite unlikely as nearly all Turks are Muslim).

Joel Richardson is wrong about this.

As far as Bill Salus goes, he is correct that the Mystery Babylon is connected to Rome (for some biblical proof, watch: Mystery Babylon USA, Mecca, or Rome?).

Unlike Joel Richardson, Bill Salus is also correct that Ezekiel 38 is NOT for now. Here is something from him that I found in a search today:

December 2, 2015

Ezekiel 38 has significant preconditions preventing its prophetic fulfillment. Ezekiel 38:8-13 mandates that Israel must be dwelling securely, without walls, bars, or gates, and in the center of their land, probably alluding to the landmass described in Genesis 15:18. Additionally, the Jewish State must be in receipt of great spoil. In my estimation, Israel today is not fulfilling these conditions.

Israel is unable to dwell securely as a result of the hostile Arab volatility that surrounds them. Walls, bars, and gates exist in Israel today in order to protect the Israelis from being terrorized by Hamas, Hezbollah, ISIS and the Palestinians in general. In fact, Israel is probably the most fenced in country in the world. It has fencing at various stretches along all of its land based borders.

Additionally, the goal of the Ezekiel 38 invaders is to destroy Israel and take plunder and great spoil. Although Israel’s economy is flourishing, it’s debatable if it presently possesses the great spoil that Russia and their coalition someday come after.

Ezekiel 38 describes nine distinct populations by their ancient names including Russia, Iran, Turkey, and Libya but omits the historic name equivalents of Arab states and terrorist populations that share common borders with Israel. Some of those who advocate that Ezekiel 38 is imminent teach that the surrounding Arab nations are identified indirectly in Ezekiel 38:6. They teach that the clause, “many peoples with thee,” includes the neighboring Arab states. However, there are three potential problems with this line of teaching.

1. The Arab states and terrorist populations within them are pinpointed directly in a distinctly different prophecy described in Psalm 83. The Psalm lists ten entirely separate members not included among the Ezekiel 38:1-6 invaders. Thus, it is probable that they are not among the “many peoples with thee” in Ezekiel 38:6, but are “many peoples distinct from thee”, not listed in Ezekiel 38 among the invaders.

2. The hordes of Ezekiel 38 invaders must cross over much of the land possessed by these Psalm 83 nations and / or territories presently occupied by the terrorist populations in order to invade the nation of Israel. This beckons the question; why aren’t these nations, terrorists, or refugees listed among the Ezekiel 38 invaders?

3. Most importantly, Ezekiel 38 identifies nine specific invading populations, but oddly doesn’t mention any of the Psalm 83 Arab confederates among them. http://www.prophecydepotministries.net/2015/why-ezekiel-38-is-not-a-now-prophecy/

For more on Ezekiel 38, check out the article: Ezekiel 38: For Russia & Iran in Our Day?

Now the WND article at the beginning of this post had the following picture (which comes from Bill Salus’ site):

The above is used by Bill Salus for some of his other teachings. Related to that he taught, “Psalm 83 is an “Inner Circle” confederation of Israel’s Arab enemies that share common borders with the Jewish state” (http://www.prophecydepotministries.net/2012/the-psalm-83-and-ezekiel-38-prophecies/).

Basically, Bill Salus, like most Protestants misunderstands Psalm 83. Basically, for two reasons:

  1. He and various others think the Assyrians are Syria. It is not that there are no modern day Assyrians in Syria, but the bulk are in central Europe (see Germany’s Assyrian Roots Throughout History). Many do not understand what happened to the ancient Assyrians and the traits they had which modern Germans also have.
  2. He and various others tend to think that biblical references to ‘Israel’ are references to Judah only–but Israel placed his name on Ephraim and Manasseh (Genesis 48; see also Anglo – America in Prophecy & the Lost Tribes of Israel).

In 1966 and 1979, the old Radio/Worldwide CG taught that the following were peoples were in Psalm 83:

But who is the “king of the south”?…in verse 40 we skip to “the time of the end”…The verse undoubtedly found partial fulfillment in the offensive of 1896…But Mussolini did not finish the prophecy…Just as there is yet to be a final “king of the north”…there may very well emerge in the same manner a final “king of the south”–an overall leader of an Arab-Moslem confederation, possibly bearing the very title Mahdi…a prophetic psalm (Psalm 83) provides additional insight into the Mideast picture. Germany (Assyria in Bible prophecy) and perhaps the rest of Europe will be in league in the future with a union of Arab nations…But in the end, this European-Arab alliance will prove short-lived…And the king of the north shall come against him [the king of the south]…Daniel 11:40-41…The Arab-Moslem Confederation will, of course, be thrown into chaotic disarray in the fact of invasion. (Stump K. The Arab World in Prophecy. Plain Truth, December 1979, pp. 11-12).

They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee: The tabernacles of Edom [Esau or modern-day Turkey, a non-Arab but Islamic nation] and the Ishmaelites [Saudi Arabia]; of Moab [part of Jordan] and the Hagarenes [anciently these people dwelt in the land known as Syria today]; Gebal [Lebanon], and Ammon [modern Jordan], and Amalek [part of the Turks]; the Philistines [the modern Palestinian Arabs] with the inhabitants of Tyre [Lebanon]; Assur [whose descendants, the Assyrians, migrated to Germany] also is joined with them: (Stump K. The Arab World in Prophecy. Plain Truth, December 1979).

Turn to the astounding prophecy found in Psalm 83:1-8. David, inspired of God, predicted the coming time when ALL of Israel’s enemies would join together in an effort to crush out even the name “Israel” from the face of the earth! (Verse 4) “For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee…” (verse 5). Notice the nations making up this confederation. “Edom [Turkey], and the Ishmaelites [Saudi Arabia]; Moab [Jordan], and the Hagarenes [they anciently dwelt in the land known as Syria today]; Gebal {Lebanon}, and Ammon [Jordan] and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre; Assur [whose descendants migrated to Germany] is joined with them; they have helped the children of Lot” {Moab and Ammon in modern Jordan). Here we see that the Arab nations mentioned are allied with Germany (Assur) which we know from other prophecies will be the military leader — naturally so — of a United States of Europe…Egypt…will provoke the prophesied United Europe (Dan. 11:40). This European power — called the “king of the north” in Daniel 11 — shall invade and occupy the “glorious land” of Palestine (verse 41). “And the land of Egypt shall not escape”(Boraker R. SYRIA RAIDS ISRAEL – Where Is It Leading? Plain Truth. November 1966)

Because Bill Salus does not understand that Germanic connection, this leads him to conclusions that are not consistent with other passages in the Bible about Assyria in prophecy (cf. Isaiah 10:5-12; see also Germany in Biblical and Catholic Prophecy).

Psalm 83 is very likely to involve terrorism–taking “crafty counsel” sounds like plotting terrorism (see also Why Terrorism? Is Terrorism Prophesied?). The Europeans will make a destructive deal with those of the Middle East and North Africa. It would seem that the King of the South will employ some type of warfare and terrorism against the descendants of Israel. The Bible specifically warns about “terror” as a curse for the descendants of Jacob (Leviticus 26:16; Jeremiah 15:8; Deuteronomy 32:25) and since terrorism has often been used by Islamists, this may be part of how they will contribute to the destruction of the nation of Israel and the Anglo-descended peoples that Psalm 83 and Daniel 11:39 alludes to. Some Muslims want a leader called the Imam Mahdi, while others call for a Caliph, to lead them and create some type of Islamic empire in the 21st century (see also The Prophesied ‘Islamic’ Confederation. This deal in the 83rd Psalm will affect the USA, Canada, UK, and possibly Australia and even New Zealand.

Though not all Muslims expect the Imam Mahdi, many still seem to long for a leader to unify the Arab World. Some Muslims are looking for a political-spiritual leader, sometimes called the Caliph in English, to rise up (Caliph is a shortened version of “Khalifah rasul Allah” meaning “Successor to the Messenger of God”). The Turkish President would like to be that man, but will not be. The title caliph has been given to the head of state in Muslim-governed countries in the past (which included Turkish caliphs), though the latter ones lacked the power of the earlier ones.

Do not think that you need to believe either Bill Salus or Joel Richardson. They both have long promoted erroneous prophetic teachings.

The Apostle Peter wrote:

19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed (2 Peter 1:19, KJV).

This is the case with the Continuing Church of God. For example, details about what biblical signs to watch for and WHY the end cannot happen this year, etc. are in the article 18 items to prophetically watch in 2018; here is a link to a related sermon: 18 items to prophetically watch in 2018.
