World hits record Covid cases in a week as WHO warns over Omicron

Paris (AFP) – The world hit a record number of Covid infections in a week, an AFP tally revealed Wednesday, as the WHO warned that Omicron poses a “very high” risk and could yet overwhelm healthcare systems.
The highly transmissible variant has seen case records in multiple countries and registered infections were up 37 percent globally from December 22-28 compared to the previous seven-day period, according to the AFP tally based on national databases.
A total of 6.55 million cases were detected between 22-28 December, the highest figures since the World Health Organization declared a pandemic in March 2020.
The surge, currently worst in Europe,
has forced governments to walk a tightrope between re-imposing restrictions designed to stop hospitals becoming overwhelmed and the need to keep economies and societies open two years after the virus first emerged in late 2019.
Studies suggest Omicron, now the dominant strain in some countries, carries a reduced risk of being admitted to hospital, but the World Health Organization still urged caution. …

France on Wednesday extended by another three weeks the closure of nightclubs — with financial aid to help mitigate the loss of business over the Christmas and New Year period.
“I can imagine the distress for these employees and entrepreneurs,” Tourism Minister Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne told France Inter radio.
French lawmakers were on Wednesday to start debating a new law that will only allow those vaccinated — and no longer accept proof of a negative Covid test — to enter restaurants, cinemas, museums and other public venues.

Globally, the number of newly confirmed COVID cases topped 1M for a second straight day as the hyper-infectious omicron has helped to drive the latest seasonal wave.
As a result, countries are tightening restrictions on international travel targeted at Americans, while Dr. Fauci exhorts Washington to respond with restrictions on domestic travel for all Americans, along with more restrictions on foreigners traveling to the US, per BBG.
The Netherlands will now require travelers arriving from the US to self-quarantine for up to ten days.
Hospitalizations are spiking from New South Wales to New York State (although Australia is still nowhere near the level of virality seen in the US).
As cases surge to record levels down under, the Australian government is scrambling to change its testing rules to clear up congestion at test sites.
Their problem isn’t so different from what’s happening in the UK and the US, per Reuters.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Wednesday Australia needed “a gear change” to manage overburdened laboratories and get people out of isolation. He called a snap meeting of the national cabinet on Thursday.
“We just can’t have everybody just being taken out of circulation because they just happen to be at a particular place at a particular time,” Morrison said during a media briefing.
Morrison’s plan would prioritize urgent cases while relying more on rapid antigen tests, which are being used in the US.
Since cases are surging, omicron has proven it has a lower hospitalization rate than previous variants. The only problem is that with so many new cases, inevitably, there are going to be more hospitalizations as well.

CDC has been collaborating with global public health and industry partners to learn about Omicron, as we continue to monitor its course. We don’t yet know how easily it spreads, the severity of illness it causes, or how well available vaccines and medications work against it.

The Omicron variant likely will spread more easily than the original SARS-CoV-2 virus and how easily Omicron spreads compared to Delta remains unknown. CDC expects that anyone with Omicron infection can spread the virus to others, even if they are vaccinated or don’t have symptoms.
Severe Illness

Governments are scrambling to see how to restriction the transmissibility of the highly transmissible Omicron variant.
But, of course, it is still spreading.
As part of the beginning of sorrows, Jesus warned of pestilences in the 24th chapter of the Book of Matthew, and we certainly are seeing that now.

With variants, closures, and restrictions, we have not gone back to a “pre-coronavirus world.”
The fact that Omicron is believed to spread so much faster gets me to wonder if some aspect of this variant will be found in the coming pestilence prophesied to be associated with the rise of the fourth horseman of the Apocalypse.
So, what will happen in a few years?
The Book of Revelation shows that a worst pestilence will come:
7 When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.” 8 So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth. (Revelation 6:7-8)
The ride of the fourth horseman will result in the death of 1/4 of humanity–with much of that from disease!
That is much worse than what we now expect for COVID-19.
What will then happen a few years from now?
The Bible shows that the coming European King of the North beast will gain power after a time of death and pestilence.
While COVID-19, itself, is not that, it is setting the stage for people to turn to such a leader.

Biological Warfare and Prophecy. Is biological warfare possible? Was it prophesied? Scientists have long warned that pathogenic organisms like the coronavirus could be weaponized.
