Laodicea
Ancient Laodicea contains many ineffective structures

COGwriter

In August 2009, UCG decided that although its elders once voted to move to Texas, because they later voted against it, that they would sell the property they had purchased for a Texas headquarters (see August posts titled UCG: What Next? and UCG on Its Governance).

Here is the property listing information:

Australian Senator Speaks of US Economic Armageddon

Friday, December 18th, 2009

COGwriter

Earlier this week, an Australian senator was chastised for telling the truth about the USA:

Senator Joyce, who has never been shy in saying exactly what he thinks on anything, believes Australia should have contingency plans in place in case the US fails to meet its debt obligations and has described that scenario as an “economic Armageddon”…

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/12/11/2769518.htmJoyce’s Armageddon warning

The Age, Australia – Dec 11, 2009

TONY Abbott’s new finance spokesman, Barnaby Joyce, believes the American Government may default on its debt, triggering an ”economic Armageddon” that will make the recent global financial crisis pale into insignificance..

He said the chances of a US debt default were distant but real, and politicians were not doing the electorate a favour by refusing to acknowledge the risk. http://www.theage.com.au/national/joyces-armageddon-warning-20091210-km90.html

Newsweek has also reported some of the truth about what is happening in the USA:

An Empire at Risk
We won the cold war and weathered 9/11. But now economic weakness is endangering our global power.

Call it the fatal arithmetic of imperial decline. Without radical fiscal reform, it could apply to America next. http://www.newsweek.com/id/224694

Without national repentance, the USA is doomed.  Period.  And so is Australia.

Many do not wish to accept that, either here or in Australia, but it is the truth.

Benedict XVI Celebrates Christmas, But Early Christians Did Not

Pope Benedict XVI Sitting & Wearing White

Pope Benedictus XVI

COGwriter

Zenit.org (a pro-Vatican news source) reported:

Christmas Has Mexican Look in Paul VI Hall

VATICAN CITY, DEC. 17, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Christmas decorations in Paul VI Hall have a Mexican flair this year, with a 20-foot Nativity scene and Christmas tree.

The decorations were presented to Benedict XVI on Wednesday during the general audience held in the hall.

The president of the Mexican episcopal conference, Archbishop Carlos Aguiar Retes of Tlanepantla, told ZENIT that “I could see that the Holy Father was very content as he contemplated the Nativity.”

And while this shows that Pope Benedict XVI celebrates Christmas, it is important to realize that according to numerous Catholic and Catholic-accepted sources, early Christians most certainly did not celebrate Christmas, and the date of December 25th is tied to heretical/pagan sources.

For example, The Catholic Encyclopedia clearly teaches that:

Christmas was not among the earliest festivals of the Church (Martindale C. Transcribed by Susanti A. Suastika. Christmas. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume III. Copyright © 1908 by Robert Appleton Company. Online Edition Copyright © 2003 by K. Knight. Nihil Obstat, November 1, 1908. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York).

The above is true.

An Armenian scholar called Ananias of Shirak, circa 600 A.D., wrote:

The Festival of the holy Birth of Christ, on the 12th day before the feast of the Baptism, was not appointed by the holy apostles, nor by their successors either, as is clear from the canons of the holy apostles…which is 6th of January, according to the Romans.

But many years after their fixing the canons, this festival was invented, as some say, by the disciples of the heretic Cerinthus; and was accepted by the Greeks, because they were truly fond of festivals and most fervent in piety; and by them it was spread and diffused all over the world.

But in the days of the holy Constantine, in the holy Council of Nice, this festival was not received by the holy fathers (Ananias of Shirak, On Christmas, The Expositor, 5th series vol. 4 (1896) Translation. pp.323-337, as reported by ccel).

Twelve days before January 6th is December 25th (see also Conybeare F.C. The Key of Truth: A Manual of the Paulician Church of Armenia. Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1898, pp. 185). Hence, the above report suggests that December 25th was originally developed by the heretic Cerinthus.

Why would Cerinthus pick December 25th?

Probably because that was the day of celebration of the birthday of the sun-god Mithra. December 25th also took place during the Saturnalia, hence it was acceptable to at least two groups of pagans. Followers of Mithra represented an influential group in the Roman Empire. Other practices associated with Mithraism have become part of the Roman and Orthodox Catholic churches (such as their communion services).

Cerinthus was a heretic who the Apostle John publicly denounced towards the end of the first century. Notice that Irenaeus wrote that John detested Cerinthus so much that he would not even take a bath in the same building as him:

There are also those who heard from him that John, the disciple of the Lord, going to bathe at Ephesus, and perceiving Cerinthus within, rushed out of the bath-house without bathing, exclaiming, “Let us fly, lest even the bath-house fall down, because Cerinthus, the enemy of the truth, is within.” (Irenaeus. Adversus Haeres. Book III, Chapter 3, Verse 4).

Why would anyone want to observe a holiday started by an “enemy of truth” that was denounced so strongly by the Apostle John?

Well, at least until the Council of Nicea, the December 25th Christmas holiday was not even accepted by the Roman Catholics.

The Roman Catholics have also condemned Cerinthus as a heretic:

Cerinthus A Gnostic-Ebionite heretic, contemporary with St. John…Cerinthus was an Egyptian, and if not by race a Jew…Cerinthus’s doctrines were a strange mixture of Gnosticism, Judaism, Chiliasm, and Ebionitism (Arendzen J.P. Transcribed by William D. Neville. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume III. Published 1908. New York: Robert Appleton Company. Nihil Obstat, November 1, 1908. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York).

Yet, the Church in Rome did endorse Christmas, however, no later than by the latter half of the fourth century. Astoundingly the Roman Catholics adopted it when it essentially absorbed the followers of Mithraism.

Notice the following from The Catholic Encyclopedia:

Mithraism A pagan religion consisting mainly of the cult of the ancient Indo-Iranian Sun-god Mithra. It entered Europe from Asia Minor after Alexander’s conquest, spread rapidly over the whole Roman Empire at the beginning of our era, reached its zenith during the third century, and vanished under the repressive regulations of Theodosius at the end of the fourth century…Helios Mithras is one god…Sunday was kept holy in honour of Mithra, and the sixteenth of each month was sacred to him as mediator. The 25 December was observed as his birthday, the natalis invicti, the rebirth of the winter-sun, unconquered by the rigours of the season (Arendzen. J.P. Transcribed by John Looby. Mithraism. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume X. Published 1911. New York: Robert Appleton Company. Nihil Obstat, October 1, 1911. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York).

The World Book Encyclopedia notes,

In 354 A.D., Bishop Liberius of Rome ordered the people to celebrate on December 25. He probably chose this date because the people of Rome already observed it as the Feast of Saturn, celebrating the birthday of the sun (Sechrist E.H. Christmas. World Book Encyclopedia, Volume 3. Field Enterprises Educational Corporation, Chicago, 1966, pp. 408-417).

It needs to be understood that some scholarly sources believe that the celebration in Rome of Christmas may have began 2-3 decades earlier (by Constantine), but none I am aware of suggest it was prior Constantine in the fourth century.

It should also be understood that the Feast of Saturn was condemned in the late 2nd century by Tertullian, a historian that the Vatican accepts as one of the most important in the 2nd century:

The Minervalia are as much Minerva’s, as the Saturnalia Saturn’s; Saturn’s, which must necessarily be celebrated even by little slaves at the time of the Saturnalia. New-year’s gifts likewise must be caught at, and the Septimontium kept; and all the presents of Midwinter and the feast of Dear Kinsmanship must be exacted; the schools must be wreathed with flowers; the flamens’ wives and the aediles sacrifice; the school is honoured on the appointed holy-days. The same thing takes place on an idol’s birthday; every pomp of the devil is frequented. Who will think that these things are befitting to a Christian master, unless it be he who shall think them suitable likewise to one who is not a master? (Tertullian. On Idolatry, Chapter X. Translated by S. Thelwall. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 3. Edited by Alexander Roberts and James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

But “let your works shine,” saith He; but now all our shops and gates shine! You will now-a-days find more doors of heathens without lamps and laurel-wreaths than of Christians. What does the case seem to be with regard to that species (of ceremony) also? If it is an idol’s honour, without doubt an idol’s honour is idolatry. If it is for a man’s sake, let us again consider that all idolatry is for man’s sake; let us again consider that all idolatry is a worship done to men, since it is generally agreed even among their worshippers that aforetime the gods themselves of the nations were men; and so it makes no difference whether that superstitious homage be rendered to men of a former age or of this. Idolatry is condemned, not on account of the persons which are set up for worship, but on account of those its observances, which pertain to demons (Tertullian. On Idolatry, Chapter XV. Translated by S. Thelwall. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 3. Edited by Alexander Roberts and James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

What Tertullian seems to be saying is that observing mid-winter celebrations make Christians appear to be followers of pagan gods, and since the pagans would not intentionally celebrate days considered by many to be Christian, Christians should not celebrate days that are honored by the heathen. Specifically, he felt that those who profess Christ should not celebrate Saturnalia, New Year’s, or other pagan days, as even the observance is a form of idolatry (click here for an article titled Is January 1st a Date for Christians Celebrate?).

Since the modern Christmas celebration is at the same time as the old Gentile Saturnalia holiday (and with many of the same elements, like wreaths and gift-giving), it is clear that Tertullian is condemning these practices by stating that those that keep it are of the pagan god Saturn.

So, practices that were condemned by early professors of Christ would seem not be appropriate for those who claim to have the practices of the original Christians.

Those interested in learning more about Christmas, early Christianity, and changes that many have adopted may wish to carefully study the following articles:

Obama’s Poll Numbers Down, But He is Not Out

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

US President Obama’s approval ratings are again in the news:

Obama’s ratings sink on economy, healthcare

Steve Holland – Analysis

“It was inevitable,” Obama told interviewer Oprah Winfrey. “We have 10 percent unemployment. I told (my wife) Michelle when we got here that in six months my poll numbers will start crashing, so we can’t play to the polls. I’m concerned with where we’ll be in two to three years.”  http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE5BG0NO20091217

President Obama’s approval ratings have dropped more quickly than most first term USA presidents so far.  But that does not mean that he necessarily will not get re-elected.  Poll numbers for USA presidents vary widely and current numbers are not really an insight as to where they will end up in 2012 (the next USA presidential election).

Future elections aside, the Obama administration has been accelerating the USA debt accumulation that happened under many previous administrations in Washington (see US Debt Limit to be Raised, Disaster is Waiting Long Term), but which really began to accelerate towards the end of the Bush administration.

According to biblical prophecy, debt is a curse (Deuteronomy 28:42-45).  And according to a prophecy in Habakkuk 2:1-8, it will lead to the taking over of the end-time debtor nation.  President Obama seems to be pursing policies that will result in increased debt.

New Finding: Evidence Suggests that the Shroud of Turin Is Fake

History of Early Christianity

COGwriter

An ancient burial cloth has been found that seems to provide evidence that the Shroud of Turin is not authentic:

‘Jesus-era’ burial shroud found
BBC – Dec 16, 2009

A team of archaeologists and scientists says it has, for the first time, found pieces of a burial shroud from the time of Jesus in a tomb in Jerusalem.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/8415377.stm

Even if the actual burial cloth of Jesus is the “Shroud of Turin” or some other relic, it would not seem that it should be venerated by Christians as the early Christians opposed venerating such relics.  Many do not seem to realize how early Christians viewed such items.  Most know very little about early church history–and what many think they know is clouded by misinformation and misconceptions.

Arab Monetary Union Planned to Basically Replace Dollar: Might it Become the King of the South?

COGwriter

In order to be less dependent upon the shaky US dollar and to show their own strength, Arab nations are inching closer to having their own replacement currency:

Gulf petro-powers to launch currency in latest threat to dollar hegemony

The Arab states of the Gulf region have agreed to launch a single currency modelled on the euro, hoping to blaze a trail towards a pan-Arab monetary union swelling to the ancient borders of the Ummayad Caliphate.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/economics/6819136/Gulf-petro-powers-to-launch-currency-in-latest-threat-to-dollar-hegemony.html

The Europeans who, and not Russia (see Is Russia the King of the North?), will be the final King of the North (see Who is the King of the North?), have a certain monetary union with the Euro that all signers of the Lisbon Treaty will ultimately essentially have to adopt if they are to remain in the EU.

Thus, it makes sense that an Arab monetary union may become the basis for the coming empire of the final King of the South.

Sacrificial Altar to Be Built in Jerusalem

There is a news report from Israel that the Temple Institute will begin to build an altar for sacrifices:

Temple Institute to Build Sacrificial Altar on Tisha B’av

by Yehudah Lev Kay     December 15, 2009

http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/132664

This is big news.  For while an actual temple is not needed for sacrifices  according to the Bible (Ezra 3:6) and the Temple Institute (Why is a Jewish Temple in Jerusalem Not Required?), a sacrificial altar is (Ezra 3:2-3).

The Bible tells of a time when sacrifices will be stopped (Daniel 9:27; 11:31) and they must be started before they are stopped.

Prophetic events are moving forward.

This Debt now exceeds 12,000,000,000,000 and is headed toward 14,000,000,000 in 2010

COGwriter

The USA is set to increase its debt at record levels once again:

Increasing the debt limit, along with the peril

Carolyn Lochhead, Chronicle Washington Bureau

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

Washington — After passing a $447 billion spending bill Sunday, Congress faces a Jan. 1 deadline to raise the ceiling on the national debt even as a bipartisan expert panel warned Monday that the United States faces a potential funding crisis.

As long-term readers of the COGwriter page are aware, increasing debt is a much greater peril than most in the news media report.  Also, once interest rates raise dramatically (and they will), it will be a whole new ballgame (to use an American expression) that will be even worse for the USA.

Here are two passages of scriptures that shed some light on the danger for the national debtor:

43 The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail. 45 Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you (Deuteronomy 28:42-45).

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry…
6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases
What is not his–how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’? 7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. 8 Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you (Habakkuk 2:3,6-8).

Note that debt is a biblical curse and that destruction of the main debtor appears to be an end time prophecy.  The USA is in more total debt than any nation in history and it plans to greatly increase that debt.  Without national repentance, the USA is doomed.

I should also point out that the debt clock does not include items such as foreign investment in the USA outside of items like treasury bills. The Europeans have over 5,000,000,000,000 invested in the USA that could become nearly worthless if the USA defaults on its other debt or if its economy succumbs to the debt.  That will not please them.

UCG’s Paul Kieffer Resigns, Replaced by Dave Baker

Laodicea
Laodicea Has Many Scattered Structures that Are Relatively Ineffective

COGwriter

UCG’s Mike Bennett reported:

UCG Council of Elders Chairman Roy Holladay announced today that Paul Kieffer had resigned from the Council and Dave Baker, who was next in line in the last ballot, has accepted the position. Mr. Holladay wrote:

“On Wednesday, December 9th Paul Kieffer voluntarily resigned from his position on the Council of Elders.  Paul’s statement concerning his resignation is copied for your information below.  Paul’s sincere desire is to do what is best for the United Church of God.  I know that both he and Monica will appreciate your prayers.

Since my election to the Council of Elders in May 2008, various allegations people have made about me have made me a lightning rod among some in the ministry and membership. Due to the concern this has caused for some, I have decided it is best for me to voluntarily resign from the Council of Elders in the hope that this will lay these issues to rest. It is my sincere hope that this will lead to greater unity in the Church, help all of us focus on our mission of preaching the gospel and preparing a people, and move forward together.–Paul Kieffer

“Paul was one of the three international Council members.  David Baker was the runner-up of the International candidates in the 2009 balloting.  David Baker has accepted the responsibility of replacing Paul on the Council.  We welcome David to the Council of Elders and will look forward to working closely with him in the future.  David and Dorrie will likewise solicit your prayers for these additional duties.”

This had been rumored, but now apparently is official.  UCG has had a tendency for governmental leadership changes.

Ronald Weinland’s Great Tribulation, 1 Year Later

Monday, December 14th, 2009

VS.

COGwriter

In 2008, Ronald Weinland of CGPFK made many provably false declarations.  He claimed that the USA would be nuked by the summer of 2008, that he would step down and not preach any more if the USA was not nuked by then, that the dollar would collapse in 2008, that the USA would not have a new president take office in January 2009, etc.  All of those were wrong.

He also declared twice when he felt that the final 3 1/2 years, the beginning of the Great Tribulation, would start.  The first date was April 17, 2008.  He claimed that God gave him power that day to destroy his critics and that his wife was the other of the two witnesses (he had claimed that he was one of the two witnesses prior to that).  But the critics were not destroyed.

When the USA was not nuked, he instead of keeping his word and stepping down, claimed that he understood additional “truth” and that the Great Tribulation was to begin on December 14, 2008.  Today, is the one year anniversary of when the Great Tribulation started according to Ronald Weinland.  Throughout 2009, he has hung on to that December 14, 2008 start date.

Even though many world events which are aligning towards the end of the world as we know it occurred, the Great Tribulation has not started.  Ronald Weinland forgets that the following should have happened to many of the faithful if the final time, times, and half a time began on December 14, 2008:

23…’The fourth beast shall be
A fourth kingdom on earth,
Which shall be different from all other kingdoms, And shall devour the whole earth, Trample it and break it in pieces.  24 The ten horns are ten kings
Who shall arise from this kingdom. And another shall rise after them; He shall be different from the first ones, And shall subdue three kings.  25 He shall speak pompous words against the Most High, Shall persecute the saints of the Most High, And shall intend to change times and law. Then the saints shall be given into his hand
For a time and times and half a time (Daniel 7:23-25).

This did not occur.  Nor did the Philadelphia Christians receive special divine protection that was promised to them (Revelation 3:10, see also There is a Place of Safety for the Philadelphians. Why it May Be Petra) and not other Christians.

Essentially, Ronald Weinland has “spiritualized” prophetic events away and now claims that some real events will eventually happen–he claims that God is testing his followers now to remain faithful to Ronald Weinland–I disagree.  The most real events in 2009 related to him probably have been that he is wrong again and that last month he improperly declared himself to be an apostle (Ronald Weinland Apostle? Another False Declaration).

There are several scriptures that come to mind when I look at his declarations:

But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.  And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.  By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber (2 Peter 2:1-3).

13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

…when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him (Deuteronomy 18:22).

Because of those scriptures, I have considered that Ronald Weinland is a false prophet, false teacher, false apostle, not one of the two witnesses, and that he has caused some to blaspheme the way of God.  When will he and his followers realize that?

Biblically-predicted events are happening and will happen, but Ronald Weinland is not a reliable source for understanding many of them.

Concerns About Ronald Weinland’s Church of God-Preparing for the Kingdom of God Ronald Weinland falsely claims to be one of the two witnesses God is raising up and that the end will come in 2008 (first April 17th, then June 2008, now December 14, 2008). Why does the Bible show that Ron Weinland is a false prophet? He also has at least one other view that suggests that he is not part of the Church of God.

2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect This is a link related to a book by Bob Thiel (COGwriter). This also has YouTube videos related to 2012. The book is for those truly interested in understanding how prophecies inter-relate and who want to see a real sequence of end time events. Unlike Ronald Weinland’s statements, world events are aligning with the predictions in this book as it is based on the Bible.
