Vatican Astronomer on 2012 Movie

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

COGwriter

A Vatican astronomer has made some comments about Sony’s 2012 movie and the end of the world:

Forget doomsayers; stop smoking, fasten seatbelts, advises astronomerCNS – Jan 6, 2010
VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Forget worrying over end-of-the-world predictions; lives are more at risk of being lost from smoking and driving without a seatbelt, said a Vatican astronomer.U.S. Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno said, there is no reason to believe the claims behind the new apocalyptic science fiction film, “2012,” or other doomsday scenarios.”People have been predicting the end of the world since the dawn of humanity. Up until now, none of these theories have turned out to be true and there is no reason to believe (that they will come true) in 2012,” he said in an interview published Jan. 6 in the Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano. The article’s headline read: “2012? It’s not the end of the world, at all.”

Brother Consolmagno said there is a more serious problem behind the many forecasts of doom on the horizon.

“These beliefs spread because we are all tempted by the desire to possess secret knowledge of the future, thinking that it will make us more powerful than others. In reality, this is only a sign of bad science or bad religion,” he said. http://www.catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/1000035.htm

It may be of interest to note that I wrote the following about two years ago:

Furthermore, it is highly likely that representatives of the Roman Catholic Church will teach that the end will not come on December 21, 2012. This will increase the reputation of that church as a “credible source” on matters prophetic.

This seems to be starting to happen.  Yet, certain mystics affiliated with the Church of Rome (some of which it considers to be saints) seem to suggest that the end is likely to come with the next pope.  People need to discern the truth from the hype.  And compare predictions from all sources with those contained within the Bible.

And biblically, despite what many may say about 2012, the Bible indicates that the end of the world as we know is likely to happen within the next decade or so.  Though it will NOT be in 2012.  And it will not be from a flood.

Ambassador College Campus Again Changing Ownership

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Although it is no longer owned by any COG, those who were once affiliated with the old WCG were familiar with the old Ambassador campus. My wife and I were married in one of the buildings shown above.

COGwriter

The former Ambassador College campus is to change ownership again:

The Ambassador Campus has been bought by City Ventures, with escrow closing on January 31, 2010. They are the
fourth developer in 10 years to take on the development of one of the city’s largest open areas which has been a major
concern to neighboring residents. Construction is to begin early next year.

The physical assets of the old WCG helped the church reach world leaders with the message of the Gospel of the Kingdom.  It seems to have become a burden to those who have tried to develop the property since.

But the Gospel message will be proclaimed to the world  as it is not dependent upon physical assets.

Earthquake in Haiti: The End of the World?

Monday, January 18th, 2010

“Orthodox” 16th Century Representation of the “Apocalypse”

COGwriter

Since late 2009, I have been in Europe and unable to post about the situation in Haiti.  LCG, however, posted the following in a commentary by Dr. Scott Winnail that (now that I am in the USA–got back around midnight–I can post):

Commentary: Signs of the end of the age in Haiti?
Tuesday afternoon, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the small island nation of Haiti and its nine-million inhabitants. The quake flattened the president’s palace, the cathedral, hospitals, schools, the main prison and whole neighborhoods. Officials feared thousands – perhaps more than 100,000 – may have perished but there was no firm count. One leading Haitian senator commented that there could be as many as 500,000 dead…
The massive destruction has severed power lines, completely disrupting internal communications in the nation. Relief organizations say it will take days to learn of the extent of the damage. This relatively shallow earthquake was the most severe quake to strike the island in over 200 years (Yahoo.com, January 13, 2009).

But why would a loving God, who made the residents of Haiti in His own image, allow such a horrific catastrophe and such tremendous devastation? And why Haiti, a nation that was already experiencing so much difficulty?

Near the end of His earthly ministry, Christ’s disciples asked Him what signs would precede His second coming. In response, Jesus Christ listed numerous events that would signal His impending return, including “earthquakes in various places” (Matthew 24:7). The recent powerful earthquake in Haiti does not mean Christ will return tomorrow. However, it does fit with the signs Christ Himself gave for His return.   Read more

LCG also reported:

…my secretary, Debbie, was able to make contact with one of our members in Haiti.  Dr. Wilner Pierre was also able to talk to him.  This member wasn’t hurt during the earthquake and all his family was protected as well.  Because of the chaos, he hasn’t been able to make contact with our other brethren but he said he would try to travel to the location where our deacon lives and where the Church meets, to see how conditions are there. We instructed him to let us know and we will keep you informed.  Have a nice Sabbath. – Dibar Apartian

My prayers have often been with the Haitians this past week.

Five More World Events Aligning with “2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect”

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

COGwriter

On January 4, 2010, I reported on five world events that aligned with the predictions in my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect,.

Today, I would like to report about five more (and will start numbering them with 6).

6. 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect explains that once the U.S. dollar is worthless, the European replacement currency will find it useful to greatly increase gold reserves to restore confidence in paper currencies (see Appendix B).

After the India bought 200 metric tons of gold bullion from the IMF, financial traders and others reported that gold is now being considered to be part of the world’s reserve currency (India, China and Gold.  Seeking Alpha, November 5, 2009.  http://seekingalpha.com/article/171537-india-china-and-gold; Krishnan R. There’s a long-term case for non-dollar assets.  Live Mint, November 6, 2009.  http://www.livemint.com/2009/11/06224817/There8217s-a-longterm-case.html).

According to a November 14, 2009 story at the Center for Research on Globalization, it appears that a new currency with gold backing may be what will replace the U.S. dollar.  Specifically the story states that “the new currency will have gold backing” (Chapman B. A financial system which has almost exclusively benefited the wealthy.  CGR, November 14, 2009.  http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=16048).  Others have noticed that gold is becoming a reserve for currency for various nations (Picerno J.  Should You Buy Gold Now? CBS,  December 9, 2009. http://moneywatch.bnet.com/investing/article/gold-prices-soaring-should-you-buy-gold-now/371892/).

7. 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect warns that there will likely be gaps in the U.S. G.P.S. system and this may require the U.S. to rely on the upcoming European Galileo system (essentially an upgraded and independent European version of G.P.S) to meet that gap (see Chapter 5).

The U.S. Air Force disputed the idea of gaps in military satellite communications (Source: Air Force Official Disputes GAO Report on Projected GPS Failure.  Satellite Today, May 26, 2009. http://www.viasatellite.com/military/headlines/Air-Force-Official-Disputes-GAO-Report-on-Projected-GPS-Failure_31100.html), when that portion of the book was written.

But, on November 10, 2009, Aviation Week reported that the leader of U.S. Strategic Command, Air Force Gen. Kevin Chilton, “says so few satellites are in queue now for launch for critical missions–such as weather observation satcom or ballistic missile warning–that there is a risk of service gaps that could impede the military’s ability to do its job” (Butler A.  U.S. Satellite Coverage Gaps Loom.  Aviation Week,  November 10, 2009.  http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story_channel.jsp?channel=defense&id=news/RISK111009.xml&headline=U.S.%20Satellite%20Coverage%20Gaps%20Loom).

8. 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect warns that the Large Hadron Collider, which was not even functional when the book came out, would likely develop technologies to be used militarily by the coming European power.

On November 22, 2009, it was reported by the BBC that the Large Hadron Collider was now functional and was now providing useful technology for the Europeans (Rincon P. Large Hadron Collider progress delights researchers.  BBC, November 22, 2009.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8372737.stm)

On November 30, 2009, the Large Hadron Collider set a new world record, “the $8-billion collider located on the Franco-Swiss border successfully accelerated the machine’s twin beams of protons to 1.18 trillion electron volts Monday. That surpasses the previous collider record of 0.98 trillion electron volts, set in 2001 by America’s Tevatron collider, located at Fermilab outside Chicago…The collider isn’t even at full power yet.” (Johnson J.  Large Hadron Collider roars to life.  Los Angeles Times, December 1, 2009. http://www.latimes.com/news/nation-and-world/la-sci-hadron1-2009dec01,0,7338976.story).  The New York Times reported that with its November and December  2009 results that its “spinoffs will invigorate the careers and labs in Europe, not the United States (Overbye D. Collider Sets Record, and Europe Takes U.S.’s Lead.  New York Times, December 9, 2009.  http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/10/science/10collide.html).

And even though it will run into technical problems sometimes, it is highly likely that the Large Hadron Collider will spin off significant military technology as 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect suggests.

9. 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect warns that the USA will continue to greatly increase its debt (see Chapter 8).

While the USA national debt clock registered 9.2 trillion dollars in April 2008, was 11 trillion in July 2009, it is expected to be around 14 trillion in 2010 (Republicans Try to Put a Freeze on Debt Limit, as Democrats Call for $1.8T Hike.  FOX, December 11, 2009. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/12/11/republicans-try-freeze-national-debt-limit/).

This debt may impact defense spending (Debt Ceiling Issue Complicates Action on Defense Spending Bill.  CQ Politics, December 10, 2009.  http://www.cqpolitics.com/wmspage.cfm?parm1=5&docID=cqmidday-000003264025) as warned in Chapter 8 of 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect.

10. 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect warns that “for the daily sacrifices to stop, they will have had to start” (Appendix B).

And for the sacrifices to start, while a temple is not biblically required for that (Ezra 3:6), a sacrificial altar is (Ezra 3:2-3).  Such an altar somewhat now exists (Lev Kay, Y. Temple Institute to Build Sacrificial Altar on Tisha B’av.  Israeli National News, December 15, 2009. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/132664).

Concluding Comments

Major world sources reported (though have often not emphasized) many of these significant events.  Most of the public has NOT learned how these events align with end time prophecies and predictions.  But none of these events should have been a surprise for those who have read and understood 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect.  Even President Obama’s recent troop increases to Afghanistan are mentioned as expected in chapters 3 and 8 of 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect.

Prophecies are coming to pass and the groundwork is being shown in significant world events.  Those who consider themselves Christians should heed Jesus’ and the Apostle Paul’s admonitions to watch world events.  Christians and non-Christians should ponder that since some predicted events are coming to pass, that it is highly likely that others will as well.

If world prophecies over the past 3,000 years are coming to pass, perhaps all may wish to understand them and the aligning world events.  Those who know can help themselves and their loved ones.

People today need to realize that we are rapidly heading towards the end and that world events are aligning themselves with the predictions in the Bible (or that can be deduced from careful comparisons of world events and biblical prophecy).

Those who wish to learn more about end-time prophecies may wish to check out the following book and compare what it teaches with Bible prophecy and world events–“For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (Revelation 19:10):

Herbert W. Armstrong Died 24 Years Ago

Order of the Sacred Treasure

COGwriter

Hebert W. Armstrong died on January 16, 1986, at age 93 1/2.  Many never heard of him, but millions did.

To learn a little about how he approached religion as a young man, here are some excerpts from his Autobiography:

Before our marriage my wife had been quite interested in Bible study. She had been for years an active Methodist.

After marriage, although she had not lost her interest in the Christian life and the Bible, she had not had the same opportunity to express it, or participate in religious fellowship with others. While we lived in Maywood, suburb of Chicago, we had joined the River Forest Methodist Church. The fellowship there had been more social than spiritual or Biblical.

But all Mrs. Armstrong’s active interest in things Biblical was reawakened when she became acquainted with Mrs. Runcorn. One day Mrs. Runcorn gave her a Bible study. She asked my wife to turn to a certain passage and read it. Then a second, then a third, and so on for about an hour. Mrs. Runcorn made no comment — gave no explanation or argument — just asked my wife to read aloud a series of Biblical passages.

“Why!” exclaimed Mrs. Armstrong in amazement, “do all these Scriptures say that I’ve been keeping the wrong day as the Sabbath all my life?”

“Well, do they?” asked Mrs. Runcorn. “Don’t ask me whether you have been wrong — you shouldn’t believe what any person tells you, but only what GOD tells you through the Bible. What does He tell you, there? What do you see there with your own eyes?”

“Why, it’s as plain as anything could be!” exclaimed Mrs. Armstrong. “Why, this is a wonderful discovery. I must rush back to tell my husband the good news. I know he’ll be overjoyed!”

A minute or so later, Mrs. Armstrong came running into my parents’ home, with the “good news.”

My jaw dropped! This was the worst news I had ever heard! My wife gone into religious fanaticism!

“Have you gone CRAZY?” I asked, incredulously. “Of course not! I was never more sure of anything in my life,” responded my wife with enthusiasm.

Indeed, I wondered if she really had lost her mind! Deciding to “keep Saturday for Sunday!” Why, that seemed like rank FANATICISM! And my wife had always had such a sound mind! There was nothing shallow about her. She had always had a well-balanced mind, with depth.

But now, suddenly — THIS! It seemed incredible — preposterous! “Loma,” I said sternly, “this is simply too ridiculous to believe! I am certainly not going to tolerate any such religious fanaticism in our family! You’ll have to give that up right here and now!”

But she wouldn’t! “Doesn’t the Bible say that wives must be obedient to their husbands?” I asked.

“Yes, in the Lord, but not contrary to the Lord,” she came back.

It was amazing how many logical arguments came to my mind. But always she had the answer.

I felt I could not tolerate such humiliation. What would my friends say? What would former business acquaintances think? Nothing had ever hit me where it hurt so much — right smack in the heart of all my pride and vanity and conceit! And this mortifying blow had to fall immediately on top of confidence-crushing financial reverses!

In desperation, I said: “Loma, you can’t tell me that all these churches have been wrong all these hundreds of years! Why, aren’t these all CHRIST’S churches?”

“Then,” came back Mrs. Armstrong, “why do they all disagree on so many doctrines? Why does each one teach differently than the others?”

“But,” I still contended, “Isn’t the Bible the very source of the teaching of all these Christian churches? And they do all agree on observing Sunday! I’m sure the Bible says, ‘Thou shalt keep SUNDAY!’ “

“Well, does it?” smiled my wife, handing me a Bible. “Show it to me, if it does — and I’ll do what it says.”

“I don’t know where to find it. You know I’m no Bible student, I could never understand the Bible. But I know the Bible must command the observance of Sunday, because all the churches observe Sunday, except the Seventh-Day Adventists, and they’re regarded as fanatics. The Sabbath was the day for the Jews.”

I even threatened divorce, if my wife refused to give up this fanaticism, though in my heart I didn’t really mean it. In our family divorce was a thing unheard of — and beside, I was very much in love with my wife — though at the moment I was boiling over with anger.

“If you can prove by the Bible that Christians are commanded to observe Sunday, then of course I’ll do what I see in the Bible!”

This was her challenge. “O.K.,” I answered, “I’ll make you this proposition: I don’t know much about the Bible — I just never could seem to understand it. But I do have an analytical mind. I’ve become experienced in research into business problems, getting the facts and analyzing them. Now I’ll make a complete and thorough study of this question in the Bible. All these churches can’t be wrong. I’ll prove to you in the Bible that you are mistaken!”

This was in the autumn of 1926…

WE HAD MOVED TO the Pacific Northwest in the summer of 1924. My wife’s brother, Walter Dillon, and her sister Bertha, had driven Walter’s Model T Ford back to Iowa in August…In June, 1925, Walter and his young wife, together with Bertha and my wife’s father, had returned to Oregon…

Walter’s wife had been indoctrinated with the theory of evolution in college. One day she and I became engaged in a discussion. The evolutionary doctrine came into the conversation. I mentioned that I was not convinced of its validity.

“Herbert Armstrong, you are simply IGNORANT!” accused Hertha. Her words stabbed deeply into what was left of my ego. “One is uneducated, and ignorant, unless he believes in evolution. All educated people now believe it.”

That accusation came hot on the heels of this Sabbath challenge from my wife. Of course, Bertha was only about 19, and had had but her freshman year in college. She was yet immature enough to be a bit oversold on what had been presented to her as a mark of intellectual distinction. Nevertheless, her manner was cutting, and a bit sarcastic, and I accepted it as a challenge.

“Hertha,” I responded, “I am just starting a study of the Bible. I intend to include in this research a thorough study of the Biblical account of creation. Since it is admittedly one of the two — evolution or special creation — I will include an in-depth study of evolution. I feel sure that a thorough study into both sides will show that it is you who are ignorant, and that you merely studied one side of a two-sided question in freshman biology, and accepted what was funneled into your mind without question. And if and when I do, I’m going to make you EAT those words!

And so it developed that I now had a double challenge to go to work on — a dual subject involving both the Biblical claims for special creation, and also a more in-depth study than before into texts on biology, geology, paleontology, and the various works on the theory of evolution.

As one exposed to a fair amount of the worlds’ education, I would simply state here that most who claim evolution as truth simply have not studied into it enough. Two articles of related interest may include Is God’s Existence Logical? and Is Evolution Probable or Impossible or Is God’s Existence Logical? Part II.

Part of Herbert W. Armstrong’s legacy is that he took the Bible to be the word of God and taught:

…the Bible tells us to PROVE all things (Armstrong HW. The RESURRECTION was NOT on Sunday. 1952).

Which of course, it does as the Apostle Paul wrote:

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21, KJV).

Sadly many have falsely maligned Herbert W. Armstrong (please see the article 15 Accusations and Truthful Responses About Herbert W. Armstrong), while others have exalted him beyond appropriateness (please see the article The Elijah Heresies ).  Since his death, only relatively few seemed to really understand his work and what he felt Christ expected of the church.

Those truly interested in learning more about Herbert W. Armstrong, should read the article Who Was Herbert W. Armstrong? How is He Viewed Today?.

And everyone should try to live by the following teaching of Herbert W. Armstrong:

Don’t believe me BELIEVE YOUR BIBLE BELIEVE GOD! I always say…check up! Listen without prejudice, with open mind, then check up–go to your BIBLE, and BELIEVE what you read there.

CG7 Does Not Understand the Book of Revelation

Rebuilt Gymnasium in Sardis

COGwriter

As regular readers of this page are aware, the Bible warns the following about the Church of God in Sardis:

3:1 “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write,

‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you (Revelation 3:1-3).

Historically, we in the Living Church of God have felt that this was a prophecy that CG7-Denver tended to fit.

In recent years, CG7 has given people like me more reason to conclude this.

Why?

Because of what CG7-Denver has published about the Book of Revelation.  Here is one such quote:

Revelation…The Bible’s last book is both intriguing and puzzling. More than any other, it uses figurative and symbolic language. Every word is true, but not every word can be read in its usual sense…

The book is formidable, to be sure…It is peculiar that a volume this obscure should be called Revelation…

The prophecy

The Apocalypse speaks the lyrical language of dream; our old senses cannot comprehend it (Overman, Jason. Songs of the Apocalypse. Bible Advocate Online, December 2007).

If one does not believe that the Book of Revelation can be understood, one is not likely to heed Jesus’ admonition to watch.

Here is another CG7 quote from former CG7 President Robert Coulter:

Many teach that the mark of the beast is yet to be enforced by a latter-day antichrist. That is impossible if John’s time allocations are taken literally. The time God allowed the saints to be persecuted and overcome was 1,260 days, or three-and-one-half years (12:6, 14; 13:5), equaling 1,260 years. This period indicated by John is identical with the time given to Daniel’s little horn to oppress the saints (Daniel 7:25)…That time is now past. For all practical purposes, the beasts of Revelation 13 have been rendered impotent, even if the dregs of their heresies and idolatries linger on in the world. (Coulter R. The Persecution of Christianity. Bible Advocate, December 2009)

Now while I personally like Robert Coulter, the teaching that Revelation 13 is completely past or impotent for the future is a major heresy. The whole world has not yet worshiped the beast (Revelation 13:3-4), his mark is not past, and people were able to buy and sell without the “mark of the beast” during the Middle Ages, hence Revelation 13 has not yet been fulfilled. A careful read of Daniel 7:25-26 shows that God’s kingdom is established right at the end of that particular, and future, persecution. Persecution also clearly affects Christians just prior to and during the Great Tribulation according to what is recorded in Matthew 24:9-22, Mark 13:9-20, Luke 21:12-24, and Revelation 12:13-17. Daniel clearly teaches that this happens at the appointed time of the end (11:28-39, 7:25). To teach otherwise is wrong, major heresy, and dangerous.

Additionally, the Bible is clear that the beast powers persuade the world through sorceries (Revelation 18:23; 13:12-15), and while some may have occurred duing the Middle Ages, the reality is that it was a political-religious alliance that existed in the Middle Ages as opposed to a highly sorcery-based empire. The prophecies related to the sorceries have not come to pass as the merchants of the world did not mourn the fall of the “Holy Roman Empire” which they will for the coming one (Revelation 18:23).

If one believes that persecution is over, there is no final Beast, etc. one will also be less likely to heed Jesus’ admonition to watch.

Those affiliated with CG7-Denver need to watch and repent now, as it will soon be too late for nearly all there.

Short Explanation Disproving Evolution as the Origin of Life

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

COGwriter

People who have seen Ben Stein’s movie, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, realize that the academic community tends to hurt the careers of those who actually have scientific evidence against evolution.  Most academics teach that in violation of the law of biogenesis, primitive life somehow sprung up.

But what if we allow the impossibility of spontaneous primitive life to have occurred?

The primitive life would have to die. Part of the reason for this is that even a single-cell is so complex, and so full of various biological subsystems, that scientists have learned that many systems are essentially necessary for life to exist or continue. Science recognizes that living organisms must be self-contained, eat, digest, and reproduce to continue to exist.

Spontaneously alive lined-up amino acids (with other substances coincidentally there) would die because:

1) All living organisms need biological structures such as organelles and membranes. Without a membranous structure, the proteins would ultimately diffuse and destroy the living organism. Living organism must be somewhat self-contained.
2) All living organisms need nourishment and direction. Since randomness would not have created the biological structure known as a DNA-containing nucleus (or some primitive equivalent), the cell would die. Even if it had some type of nucleus to provide direction, the nucleus would have to have come into existence with ability to determine what to eat and how to find food, another impossibility.
3) Even if the cell had all the above, it would die, because there would have been no reason for it to have spontaneously generated a digestive system in order to utilize the food.
4) Even if evolutionists are granted all the improbabilities and impossibilities this article discusses, the primitive life would quickly die out as there would have been no reason for it to have spontaneously generated an ability to reproduce, nor would it have any innate ability to do so.

It is in the Bible that we are told that when God made life He intended it to reproduce (Genesis 1:11,28,29). The idea of an ‘intelligent design’ by a Spirit being is the only explanation that does not defy scientifically provable knowledge–for all other explanations result in something that must die out.

And the scientific fact is that evolution as a model for explaining how life began makes no scientific sense.

So, no I do not believe in the “theory of evolution” as a viable explanation of the origin of life.  Evolution requires simply too many impossibilities to make sense.  And it only takes one impossibility to disprove a theory.

SDA Ellen White and the Two-Horned Beast

James and Ellen White
James and Ellen White

COGwriter

The following gives an idea of what the late SDA Ellen White taught about the two-horned beast of Revelation 13:

Prophecy Speaks
_____And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him . . . He causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.” (Verses 11, 12, 15-17).
++++It is well known, particularly in Adventists circles, that this two-horned non-royalist power represents our blessed country, the United States of America.2 No doubt you’re also familiar with the reasons. Unlike the other beasts of Daniel 7 and Revelation 13, this two-horned beast comes up out the earth, the new World3–the domain away from the “sea”–the old world.4 The two crownless horns show two non-royalist rulers, while their lamb-like appearance forecasts youthful innocency–Christian–in profession pure, gentle, and harmless, established upon the principles of peace and liberty, but later one speaks as a dragon. Then, the face that he has the power to dictate who should buy and who should not, shows that he represents a nation that leads in controlling the world’s wealth and industry.
++++Having only two horns, not ten, the beast therefore depicts a local, not a universal government. Nevertheless, he will influence all Christendom to “make an image to the beast, while had the wound by a sword, and did live.” That is, he will engineer a worldwide government set-up, re-enthroning the principles of the church-state rule of Ecclesiastical Rome; a system now characterized by Catholicism, apostate Protestantism, and Capitalism. “The prediction that it will speak ‘as a dragon,'” wrote Inspiration, “and exercise ‘all the power of the first beast,’ plainly foretells the development of the spirit of intolerance and persecution that was manifested by the nations represented by the dragon and the leopard-like beast.”5
++++Put still another way, it means that America will urge the world to reestablish an apostate religious-political system after the model of Western society, with principles, imagining those of the Dark Ages. (Verse 12). Note that it did not say that the Two-horned beast urged the world to worship the “head”–the Papacy, (more about this another time) but the “beast”–the system–Catholicism, apostate Protestantism, and Capitalism, topped off with Spiritualism! This is when, “Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and republican government…”6

(As cited in Vance MP. The Future of Democracy. Plain View, Jan-Mar 2005, pp.5-6).

The following is from one of Ellen White’s most popular books (note the prophet she is referring to is the Apostle John):

Says, the prophet, “I beheld another beast coming out of the earth and he had two horns like a lamb.” Revelation 13:11…One nation, and only one. meets the specifications of this prophecy; it points unmistakably to the United States of America…

“And he had two horns like a lamb.” The lamb-like horns indicate youth, innocence, and gentleness, fitly representing the character of the United States when presented to the prophet as “coming up” in 1798…But the beast with lamb-like horns “spake as a dragon…”…

But what is the “image to the beast”? and how is it to be formed? The image is made by the two-horned beast, and is an image to the first beast. It is also called the image of the beast. Then to learn what the image is like, and how it is to be formed, we must study the characteristics of the beast itself,–the papacy…

“The beast”…is the first…beast of Revelation 13,–the papacy (White E.G. Will America Survive? 1888; Reprint, 1988 by Inspiration Books East, Jemison (AL), pp. 420-423,425).

This view is not only held by Ellen G. White and the Plain View, SDA minister A. Jan Marcussen, in his book, National Sunday Law, also states the United States is the two-horned beast that comes from the earth (pp. 2-3) and cites Ellen G. White’s Cosmic Conflict, p.388.

I should add, however, that A. Jan Marcussen does consider that a Pope is the 666 of Revelation 13:18 (pp. 21-22, 27) and other SDAs may as well–and the context of Revelation 13 suggests that the two horned beast is involved with the one whose number is 666. But we in the Churches of God do not believe that the Bible teaches that the first beast represents the papacy.

The Church of God Position on the Two Horned Beast

The position held by many in the COGs differs completely that held by the Seventh Day Adventists and its leaders. The following are taken from a booklet written in 1960 by Herbert W. Armstrong, titled Who is the Beast?:

The “Two-horned Beast”

Satan has his civil government on earth. He gave it “his power, and his seat, and great authority.”
_____He also has an ecclesiastical organization — a CHURCH —as his instrumentality in deceiving the world. In 2 Corinthians11:14, we find Satan is transformed into an “ANGEL OF LIGHT.”According to Revelation 12:9 and 20:3, he has DECEIVED the whole world. How?
_____Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, Satan has HIS ministers who pretend to be the ministers of righteousness, but are actually false apostles, deceitful workers, calling themselves the ministers of Christ! Therefore they claim to be CHRISTIAN ministers. They are the MANY, not the few, because all prophecies say it is the MANY, not the few, who have been DECEIVED. Satan’s main labor for six thousand years has been the deceiving of the world. Now turn to the 13th chapter of Revelation, beginning with verse 11:
_____“And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth;and he had two horns like a LAMB, and he spoke as a DRAGON.”
_____ Who — what — is this “beast”?
_____ Some say it will be the United States aligned with the papacy. Some believe it is a federation of Protestant churches. Others declared it the Pan-American Union. MOST church organizations ignore this very vital subject completely, or say frankly, “WE DO NOT KNOW!”
_____ Why this ignorance, when the answer is so plain? Yes,why indeed?

The Bible Interpretation

Remember, first, THE BIBLE INTERPRETS ITS OWN SYMBOLS! When men put their OWN interpretation on Bible symbols, their conclusions are always false!
_____Notice, after John saw one BEAST, which we have proved to be the ROMAN EMPIRE, he now sees ANOTHER — a different — beast rise up. We have learned that “BEAST” is a symbol for a kingdom, or government (Dan. 7:17, 23), and the term represents either the kingdom or its leader, as the case may be (Dan. 7:17, 23).
_____So this other beast with the two horns is the prophecy of another kingdom or government. In these prophecies, God pictures to us the earthly Gentile governments as the wild beasts whose characteristics describe them. This two-horned beast appeared as a Lamb. But actually it spoke as a DRAGON— its true characteristic — for “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matt. 12:34).
_____What does the word “Lamb” symbolize, in the Bible? The answer is, CHRIST (John 1:29; Rev. 17:14). And “DRAGON” is a symbol of the DEVIL (Rev. 12:9, 20:2).
_____So here is some kingdom or government masquerading as that of CHRIST, or the KINGDOM OF GOD, but actually being a government of SATAN!
_____Christ did not set up a government (kingdom), at His first appearing on earth. After His resurrection the disciples asked Him if He would at that time restore the KINGDOM (Acts1:6); but He did not. The Church is not the Kingdom. Because some thought it was, Jesus spoke the parable of Luke 19:11-27 to show that He first must ascend to His Father’s throne in heaven to receive the royal power to become King of kings, to set up the world-ruling Kingdom of God.
_____But Satan is a deceiver, and he has deceived the world into supposing his (Satan’s) CHURCH, and system of churches, is the Kingdom of God.
_____Now notice carefully (Revelation 13) verse12:
_____“And he exerciseth ALL the power of the first beast before him.”The first beast is the Roman Empire. Here is ANOTHER government, also controlled by Satan, pretending to be CHRIST’S government, the Kingdom of God, taking, exercising, using, employing, ALL the power of the first kingdom, the Roman Empire.
_____Now when? “He exerciseth ALL the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to WORSHIP the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed” (verse 12). So, it was AFTER the deadly wound (of A.D.476) was healed. It was healed when Justinian brought about the restoration of the Empire in the West in A.D. 554.Consequently this RELIGIOUS government took over, exercised,by ruling, all the power of the Roman Empire AFTER A.D. 554 when it was called the Holy Empire and, later, the Holy Roman Empire.

Did a Church Government Rule Rome?

So here we have pictured a government — a RELIGIOUS government — appearing as CHRIST’S government, masquer-ading as the KINGDOM OF GOD, actually ruling the civil Roman Empire, AFTER A.D. 554. Was there such a government? Indeed there was! And only ONE!
_____Prior to 554, Justinian had written a letter to the pope, acknowledging his supremacy in the West. And when he restored the empire in the West in 554, the popes dominated the Western Empire from Rome. The Roman Empire, thus restored to continue until 1814 (1260 years), became known later as “The HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE.” We read in history that the popes were accepted as the “Vicars of Christ,” which means “IN PLACE OF Christ.” The teaching was that the Second Coming of Christ had occurred — Christ had returned to earth, as KING of kings and as LORD of lords, in the person of the popes. The millennium had begun.
_____For the entire 1260 years, the emperors accepted the popes as such, ruling the nations with a “rod of iron” as Christ is to do WHEN He really comes. Consequently they acknowl-edged the supreme religious power of the popes. The Church was organized as a GOVERNMENT — as a dual, two-fold government (symbolized by its TWO horns or kingdoms — for“horns” symbolize kingdoms also — see Dan. 7:24). It embodied CHURCH government, and it also was a STATE, or civil government, always occupying a certain amount of territory over which it, alone, ruled as an independent sovereign state— in addition to actually ruling over the vast civil kingdom called the Holy Roman Empire. Even today, it is a separate, independent, sovereign STATE. Most nations send ambassa-dors to the Vatican, just as they do to the United States, or to Italy, Britain or the USSR.
_____Notice, this second beast was to wield power over ALL THE EARTH, because it was to CAUSE the earth, and them that dwell therein, to WORSHIP this first beast “whose deadly wound was healed” after 554. In most any encyclopedia, under article “MILLENNIUM,”you will read the history of this very event — of how the“Holy Roman Empire” was called the “Kingdom of God upon earth.” They claimed the MILLENNIUM had arrived!
_____Notice verse 14: “And DECEIVETH them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast.” Verse 13 says “he doeth great wonders.”
_____So notice these three points:
_____(1) This beast performs miracles.
_____(2) He performed them “in the sight of” the Holy Roman Empire, or the first beast.
_____(3) With them he DECEIVED all nations.

All Nations Deceived

Where else, in the Bible prophecies, do we find these same identical facts?
_____First, note Rev. 17. Here is pictured a woman. In II Cor.11:2, Eph. 5:22-27, and elsewhere, we learn that “woman” is a symbol for CHURCH…

_____Now notice the last battle of “the great day of God Almighty.” It is in Rev. 19:19-20. Here is pictured the beast —“and WITH him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, WITH WHICH HE DECEIVED them that had received the MARK of the beast, and them that had worshipped HIS IMAGE.
_____”Note it! Compare with the two-horned beast of Rev.13:11-17.
_____(1) BOTH perform miracles.
_____(2) BOTH perform them before, or in the sight of, the beast.
_____(3) WITH them, BOTH the false prophet and two-horned beast DECEIVE them that have the MARK of the beast — cause them to receive that mark (Rev. 13:16).
_____Certainly, then, this two-horned beast, the false prophet, …and the woman that rode the beast are all one and the same thing — the {final revised} ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH with its pope, its other bishops, its priests and deacons, comprising the hierarchy of order!
_____Now did the two-horned beast deceive the very ones who have the MARK of the beast? He did! Continue in Rev. 13:
_____“And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth” — HOW?“…saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an IMAGE to the beast, which had the wound by the sword and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and CAUSE as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. AND HE CAUSETH ALL, BOTH SMALL AND GREAT,RICH AND POOR, FREE AND BOND, to receive a MARK in their right hand, or in their foreheads: and that no man might buy or sell [trade, earn a living, hold a job], save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name” (verses 14-17).
_____So, notice: This two-horned beast not only CAUSED people to receive the MARK of the beast (compare Rev. 19:20), but also perpetrated the forming of an image that caused the martyrdom of saints. As many as would not worship this image were caused to he killed. This false church did not kill them — she CAUSED them to he killed. History shows that the civil government of the Roman Empire martyred millions who were declared “anathema from Christ,” or “heretics” by the church.
_____Compare with the WOMAN who rode the Beast in Rev. 17:“And I saw the woman DRUNKEN WITH THE BLOOD OF THE SAINTS, AND WITH THE MARTYRS OF JESUS’ (verse 6).
Certainly these are one and the same!

The IMAGE of the Beast

Now this great church, which is a twofold government, deceived the people by SAYING THEY SHOULD MAKE AN IMAGE OF THE BEAST. Note it (Rev. 13:14) — that is HOW this church deceived people. What is an IMAGE? The dictionary says a “likeness,” a“copy, representation, model, semblance, counterpart.” So here is a great CHURCH saying, “Let us make a MODEL, or counterpart, of the civil Roman GOVERNMENT” — for that is what the BEAST is — a PAGAN GOVERNMENT. (Armstrong HW. Who is the Beast?)

Or to put it more succinctly, the COG teaches that the two-horned beast represents the final (and revised) large church ran by the false prophet claiming the papacy, while the other beast is the revived Roman Empire (which we normally believe is the going to arise out of the current European Union).

Why the Basic Position of HWA is Right

Although I feel that Herbert W. Armstrong adequately explained the LCG position, the reason that it is right because the Bible itself is to be the source of doctrine (II Timothy 3:16).

When I first read the first SDA article quoted (which was 1/29/05), I was wondering what part of the Bible they were quoting. And while I knew it had to be from the Book of Revelation, I was a little unsure of the chapter (the article stated neither). I thought that was peculiar, and then I considered it misleading.

Why?

Because in order to not expose the fallacy of the SDA position, I believe the author of that initial article (M.P. Vance) may have intentionally left out several verses (though to his credit, A. Jan Marcussen did mention them in his booklet).

Here is the entire passage that should have been quoted,

11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six” (Revelation 13:11-18, KJV).

I intentionally left the verse numbers in there to demonstrate that the initial SDA article by M.P. Vance:

1) Left out 1/2 of verse 12, even though the article suggests they quoted it
2) Left out verse 15, even though the article suggests they quoted it
3) May have intentionally left out verses 13-15 as it would show some of the fallacy of the SDA position
4) May have intentionally left out verse 18 as it would show some of the fallacy of the author’s position
5) Did not mention the book (Revelation) nor the chapter (13) that these verses were in, thus making it much more difficult for the casual reader to see if these things were so.

HWA explained adequately about verses 13-15, so I will not repeat that here.

While we in the Living Church of God observe the seventh-day Sabbath, we have many differences with the Seventh-day Adventist Church.  Basically, we do not accept that Ellen White was a prophetess.  Hence, we do not accept her interpretations as being above scripture.  Nor do we believe that the USA is the two-horned beast of Revelation 13.

Why Europe Needs Galileo

Monday, January 11th, 2010

COGwriter

The European Space Agency reported why it needs the Galileo system:

Why Europe needs Galileo…

As far back as the early 1990s, the European Union saw the need for Europe to have its own global satellite navigation system…

European independence is the chief reason for taking this major step. http://www.esa.int/esaNA/GGG0H750NDC_galileo_0.html

Those in North America who think that Europe developed this program because they want to be close allies with the USA are in for a major awakening.

Europe wants its own independent satellite navigation system.  And it will likely have the most technologically advanced one when Galileo becomes functional.

And the Europeans are doing this at a time when the US military admits that it is having problems with its GPS system (Aviation Week Confirms That Satellites May Have a Gap in Coverage for U.S. Defense).

Despite civilian uses for Galileo, the European Union specifically decided to finally fund Galileo because of its military applications (EU Approves Galileo For Military Use).  As pointed out in my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect, it is likely that the USA will temporarily decide to rely on Galileo for part of its military defense.  According to biblical prophecy, that will be a major mistake.

Steps are happening now to insure that the Europeans will have a remarkably powerful military.

PCG’s Armstrong Auditorium to Begin Concerts

Rendering of Armstrong Auditorium (Rees Associates)

The Philadelphia Church of  God (PCG) is reporting that is plans to have its “inaugural concert” featuring the Irish Guard on February 14, 2010.

PCG has 7 concert events scheduled from February to April 2010.  The concerts are put out by an arm of PCG called the Armstrong International Cultural Foundation.  Here is some of what its auditorium website says about it:

Armstrong International Cultural Foundation

The Armstrong International Cultural Foundation is a non-profit, humanitarian organization sponsored by the Philadelphia Church of God and headquartered on the Herbert W. Armstrong College campus in Edmond, Oklahoma…

The foundation began in 1996 as the Philadelphia Foundation…The foundation began sponsoring a small concert series in 1998. Since then, the series has grown significantly, attracting hundreds of guests to the John Amos Field House on the Herbert W. Armstrong College campus…

The foundation’s concert series is patterned after the famed Ambassador International Cultural Foundation’s series, hosted in the Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena, California. Under Herbert Armstrong, the auditorium, known as the “Carnegie Hall of the West Coast,” hosted greats such as Luciano Pavarotti, Vladimir Horowitz, Joan Sutherland, the Vienna Philharmonic and other musical legends. Beyond Pasadena, the foundation stretched from Bombay to Brussels, Tokyo to Cairo, Jerusalem to London, Nepal to Okinawa, and the Netherlands to the Philippines.

PCG has had a long history of attempting to try to LOOK similar to the old WCG.  It, however, has changed emphasis, doctrine, governance, and even added extra-biblical requirements to be part of the church.

In my opinion, PCG is NOT faithful, but fixated on trying to give a physical impression that they are.  Its doctrines and emphasis are simply not “Philadelphian”.

To learn more about why, please carefully study the following article:

Teachings Unique to the Philadelphia Church of God Simply calling oneself ‘Philadelphia’ does not make one so (see Revelation 3:7-9), nor does Gerald Flurry calling himself “that prophet” make it so. This article provides many quotes from this group which tries to look faithful.
