Can ‘big brother’ watch you through your television?

Back in 1972, I watched a movie based upon George Orwell’s book titled Nineteen Eighty Four (1984). In it, there were posters of the government’s top leader, called Big Brother bearing the caption “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.” There were also ubiquitous telescreen (transceiving television set) monitoring the private and public lives of the populace.

While pretty much everyone is aware that this is done in the USA, UK, and elsewhere via surveillance cameras and satellite images, can your own television watch you?

Well, this appears to be possible in what are called “smart” televisions:

So-called smart TVs have an operating system installed that is similar to a smartphone, which hosts third-party apps. People can browse the Internet, launch apps and take photos using their remote controls…researchers told CBSNews.com that the more dynamic a website is, the more opportunities there are for inserting code. They point out that the problem is not with the apps but with the way they were designed for Samsung’s Smart TV…

One of the immediate questions that arises is whether the TV can turn its camera on its owner and open a gateway for home surveillance. The researchers say that a hacker could potentially take control of the TV’s camera and remain undetected.

While the above is expressing concern about ‘hackers,’ could not the governments of the USA, some of its Anglo-allies, and/or the rising European Beast power do this? Some believe that this can also be done when certain devices, such as the new X-Box and cell phones, even when they are not turned on, but are simply on stand-by mode.

Have any modern governments taken steps to implement and/or support a ‘police state’? Many seem to think so:

Threat of a police state

A power that will force worship and control commerce:

So-called ‘smart’ television may be another way the above could be partially implemented.
