Russia is pushing Ukrainian forces out of Crimea, while many in Donetsk call for chance to vote to join Russia:

KYIV — Pro-Russian forces have stormed a Ukrainian air force base in Crimea, firing shots and smashing through gates and walls with armored vehicles.

The troops broke into the Belbek air base facing no apparent resistance from Ukrainian troops, some of whom sang the Ukrainian national anthem during the incident.

Ukrainian defense officials says at least one person was wounded.

Earlier Saturday, Russian forces issued an ultimatum for Ukrainian troops at the base to surrender. The Belbek base outside the Black Sea port city of Sevastopol has been one of the largest holdouts of Ukrainian military forces in Crimea.

The Belbek air base shares facilities with Sevastopol’s international airport. Russia also has a large naval base in Sevastopol.

Also Saturday, Ukrainian troops abandoned a military base in Novofedorovka, north of Sevastopol, after Russian soldiers forced their way into the facility. Witnesses say the Ukrainians tried to repel the Russians with smoke bombs before leaving the base.

Russian forces have been seizing Ukrainian military bases and warships in Crimea as Russia finalizes its annexation of the strategic peninsula. Ukrainian troops have offered minimal resistance thus far.

With Russia’s takeover of Crimea peninsula nearly complete, Reuters is reporting that westernn diplomats are converging on Kyiv, where, a day after the interim government leaders signed a political alignment pact with the European Union, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeir accused Russian of attempting once again to divide Europe between East and West.

“It contradicts what we have experienced for decades,” Steinmeir said. “We cannot accept this situation, cannot allow bloodshed again.”

OSCE mission

Russia’s Foreign Ministry has expressed the hope that dispatching to Ukraine a 200-member team of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe will help ease tensions. However, the ministry rejects any talk of the monitors entering Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula that Russia has now annexed.

The U.S. chief envoy to the OSCE, Daniel Baer, says the mission should have access to Crimea because the rest of the world still recognizes it as Ukrainian territory.

Three months of anti-government rallies in Ukraine, in which more than 100 people died, prompted President Viktor Yanukovych to flee his country. An interim government has been appointed with elections scheduled for May 25th.

The prime minister of that government, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, won praise Saturday from U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for pushing reconciliation at a time many Ukrainians are feeling anger and frustration.

“I’m confident that with such a strong support of international community which you are receiving and under your leadership, as well as courageous people, you will be able to overcome this difficult time,” he said.

The secretary-general added that direct dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow is critical to reducing the current tensions.

However, there is no indication of that occurring any time soon.

In eastern Ukraine, meanwhile, thousands of residents of the city of Donetsk took to the streets Saturday, demanding a chance to vote, as people in Crimea did in a refendum {sic} a week ago (3/16), to break away from Ukraine and become part of Russia.

Among those in the region who want to keep Ukrainian sovereignty, there are fears that at any time the Russian military could move across the border and occupy Ukrainian territory, as it did in Crimea.

Not only is Ukraine losing territory to Russia; its eastward-dependent trade relationship with Moscow also is in danger.

The interim government is moving quickly to work on a trade agreement with the European Union to transform Ukraine’s economy, which has been hobbled by decades of corruption and political upheaval.

If such a pact with the EU is to become a reality, Ukraine’s commissioner for European integration, Valery Pyatnytsky, says there is a need for action on comprehensive economic changes, not just more promises from the country’s political leaders.

“Not to declare the fight with corruption, not to declare the rules of law, not to declare the other values with European Union. Not declare [what] we would like to be, but to be,” said Pyatnytsky.

Ukraine’s 45 million people live on rich agricultural land and the country has a large industrial base, yet the nation is considered the poorest in Eastern Europe.

Russia is moving forward with its plans and Vladimir Putin is taking steps to make his hoped for Eurasian Union a reality.  I am certain that he would as much of Ukraine as he can get (he wants all of it), and must be pleased that Donetsk wants to vote to join Russia.

Obama going to Europe…

White House officials say the situation in Ukraine will be “front and center” during President Barack Obama’s trip to Europe in the coming week…

Also on President Obama’s European schedule is a nuclear security summit with more than 50 other countries, including Russia.

Rice says the United States has every interest in continuing to cooperate with Russia on this issue, which she calls a pillar of the Obama national security policy – making it harder for terrorists to get their hands on nuclear materials.  http://www.voanews.com/content/russia-backs-osce-in-ukraine-not-crimea/1876873.html

As far as USA national security, notice the following that a reader sent me:

The United States is puzzling over how to block cruise missiles that theoretically could be launched from the Gulf of Mexico, even after throwing some of its most advanced technologies at the problem.  Russia and Iran have been cited as possible threats that might, at some point, lurk in the waters just off U.S. shores…

But none of these systems were designed for cruise-missile defense,” Kingston Reif, an analyst with the Center for Arms Control and Nonproliferation, said in an e-mail. While I do not consider that Russia itself would want to launch one or cruise missiles against the USA, Russia has dropped a fairly public hint that it could turn the USA into ashes (see Russian nuclear threat against USA, Crimea, EU, and WWIII).  But that is mainly ‘bravado’ for show.

A more likely scenario would be for Iran (an ally of Russia) to directly or indirectly launch a cruise missile with an electromagnetic pulse (emp) weapon and greatly affect the USA. While Iran would not win an all-out war against the USA, the USA could be affected more than most seem to understand.  Iran, itself, would not do well (see also Iran in Prophecy).

Getting back to Ukraine, the current crisis is dramatically showing the Europeans that the USA does not want to militarily engage Russia. This also is showing that the Europeans that if they want to defend hoped for European Union countries like Ukraine, and even actual European Union countries, that Europe needs to have a stronger, more independent, military. Europe has taken some steps and will take more steps in the future (see, for example, Revelation 13:4, Daniel 11:39-43, and European Technology and the Beast of Revelation).

Many in Ukraine are scared and frightened and need our prayers. While many seem to be placing their hope in the European Union, that will not turn out well according to many biblical prophecies (e.g. Revelation 18-19).

In another attempt by the US Federal government to push the homosexual agenda, another federal judge ignored the votes of the people of Michigan:

Michigan has issued its first gay marriage license to a couple in Ingham County just a day after the state’s ban on same-sex marriage was struck down…

Michigan is the 18th state in the nation to allow gay marriage. At least three counties plan to issue licenses on Saturday.

Muskegon County Clerk Nancy Waters said she’s been prepared to issue licenses since last October but was waiting for an official decision from U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman.

After the decision, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette immediately filed an emergency stay request to prevent gay couples from marrying right away.

With no stay in place, Washtenaw County Clerk Lawrence Kestenbaum said his office will issue 60 licenses on Saturday.  http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/03/22/michigan-gay-marriage/6729809/

MASON, Mich. — Two women were the first gay couple to marry in Michigan on Saturday, one day after the state’s ban on gay marriage, approved by voters in a landslide in 2004, was scratched from the state constitution by a federal judge.  http://bostonherald.com/news_opinion/national/midwest/2014/03/michigans_1st_gay_marriage_license_issued

It is odd that one of the above articles says that Michigan is allowing ‘gay marriage’ as its Attorney General is still trying to stop it.  It was a federal judge who has allowed that.

Of course, this should not surprise us. Although US President Obama took an oath to protect the constitution and defend USA laws, he and his administration were opposed to defending the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA–see Obama Won’t Support Ban on Homosexual ‘Marriages’).

This shows again, that whatever agenda that various politicians have, that this trumps ‘democracy.’

The Bible warns about leaders who go the wrong direction:

12 As for My people, children are their oppressors, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths.” (Isaiah 3:12)

16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err, And those who are led by them are destroyed (Isaiah 9:16).

In the USA and elsewhere, the way the supporters of the homosexual agenda talk, homosexual marriage is all supposedly about fairness, love, and equality. The reality is that this is about morality, society, disease, and protection of children. Sexual immorality has been shown to be harmful, and according to the Bible it is sinful.

Biblically, a marriage exist as a relationship between a man and woman as God intended (Matthew 19:3-6). But, many in the USA, including its President, do not really care what the Bible teaches. And this is dangerous and will lead to destruction (cf. Romans 1:18-32).

Various ones, in and out of the USA can pretend that increasing “homosexual rights” is acceptable, but the Bible teaches otherwise.

Homosexual acts are clearly prohibited in the Bible:

22 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination. (Leviticus 18:22)

13 If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. (Leviticus 20:13)

Those who try to claim that the Bible does not clearly condemn homosexuality are intentionally misreading what it actually teaches. The Bible prohibits and condemns homosexual behavior–the Bible calls it an abomination!

Notice also the following:

9 The look on their countenance witnesses against them, And they declare their sin as Sodom; They do not hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have brought evil upon themselves. (Isaiah 3:9)

13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate. (Proverbs 8:13)

18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18)

49 Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 50 And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me; therefore I took them away as I saw fit. (Ezekiel 16:49-50)

7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. (Jude 7)

6…the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly (2 Peter 2:6)

So the Bible shows that Sodom was destroyed for many things including its pride and the committing of abominations. Homosexuality is an abomination. Sodom and Gomorrah were turned into ashes making them an example–but many leaders in the USA, Scotland, and elsewhere do not wish to consider the ramifications of what they are doing.  Some of the odd weather patterns the USA has been experiencing may be related to the growing acceptance of the homosexual agenda.

The Bible also warns against accepting and condoning practices such as homosexuality and lesbianism, which is something that the USA is doing:

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness…

24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. (Romans 1:18,24-32)

The promotion of sexual immorality, including the ‘gay’ agenda, will end in destruction. Yet various leaders in the USA, including its President and various judges, are doing just it. They apparently do not take the warnings of the Bible seriously.

The USA is in decline and will some day be eliminated–as will its Anglo-Saxon allies such as Canada and New Zealand which already allow homosexual marriage, Australia (which has ‘same-sex unions’) and not only Scotland, but the rest of UK (which is supposed to allow homosexual marriage in Wales and England around now) which are moving closer to it.

Of course, it is not just the USA and the Anglo-Saxon nations that are doing this, many of the Europeans are engaged in this as well.

No one should be pushing the homosexual agenda, yet many in the West foolishly are–and this will be to their peril.

Israel believes it has stopped a major terrorist attack:

JERUSALEM — Israel says it has thwarted a major terrorist attack by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

Israel says it has uncovered a large “terror tunnel” stretching from the Gaza Strip, 400 meters into Israeli territory. Army spokesman Peter Lerner said the sophisticated tunnel was dug by Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that rules Gaza.

“What all of this actually means is that, first of all, Gaza terrorists under Hamas are constantly operating to prepare more attacks; so clearly there’s an immediate danger that could have been posed by this tunnel,” said Lerner.

The army has found several Gaza tunnels fortified in concrete over the past six months, which could have enabled a large number of Palestinian gunmen to infiltrate into Israel. Lieutenant-Colonel Lerner says the tunnel just exposed is the biggest one yet.

“We feel that this type of tunnel would have been used in two main scenarios: either to carry out a substantial terrorist attack, meaning mass murder in one of the Israeli communities adjacent to the opening, or to have abducted a soldier or something to this effect,” he said.  http://www.voanews.com/content/israel-uncovers-gaza-terror-tunnel-/1876379.html

Russia is consolidating its power in Crimea, while the Kiev government signed a deal for Ukraine with the European Union (EU):

Moscow has completed the process of making Ukraine’s Crimea part of Russia, as Ukraine’s prime minister, in a highly symbolic move, signed a political cooperation agreement with the European Union.

President Vladimir Putin signed laws on the incorporation of Crimea into the Russian Federation on March 21 after the upper house ratified the annexation treaty earlier in the day. The State Duma, the lower house of parliament, overwhelmingly backed the treaty in a session the previous day.

Ukraine has said it will continue to fight for Crimea’s “liberation.”…

EU President Herman Van Rompuy said the signing early on March 21 of political chapters of the Association Agreement with Ukraine shows how important the relationship between the two sides is.

“Today, we are signing the [association] agreement’s political provisions,” Rompuy said. “It shows our steadfast support for the course the people of Ukraine have courageously pursued. Today is but the opening act. We expect to soon sign the agreement’s remaining parts, not least the economic provisions. Together with the political ones, they form a single instrument.”

Rompuy and other EU leaders signed the agreement with Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk on the sidelines of an EU summit in Brussels. The two sides signed three of the seven chapters of the agreement.

“This deal covers the most existential and most important issues, mainly security and defense cooperation,” Yatsenyukd said. “This deal will establish a joint decision-making body, which is to facilitate the process of real reforms in my country. And this deal meets the aspirations of millions of Ukrainians that want to be a part of the European Union.”

Ukraine’s Crimean troops make plans to leave peninsula

LIUBYMOVKA, Crimea – During the morning drill on March 20, Colonel Yuliy Mamchur announced to his troops that Ukraine’s commanders had decided to withdraw from Crimea. The personnel of Belbek military airbase near Sevastopol greeted the news with relief and regret…

The Russian invasion caught Ukraine by surprise, including its soldiers in Crimea.

Sobetsky said on Feb. 20 that nobody on the Ukraine side believed that Russia was preparing to take over the peninsula. Living side-by-side with Russian-speaking civilians, as well as staging joint exercises with Russian military stationed in Sevastopol, the Ukrainian soldiers could not imagine that such a long-time relationship could be shattered so rapidly.

In Liubymovka, a village on the outskirts of Sevastopol that houses Belbek airfield, the attitude of the villagers to Ukrainian soldiers changed just as fast. They now refer to Ukrainians as “occupants.”

“They are just blind with Russian propaganda. Let them live under a totalitarian regime for some time and they will see what they’ve got and what they’ve lost,” Sobetsky said.

Born in Mykolayiv Oblast in southern Ukraine, he is now thinking about returning to his home region along with his family. He plans to continue to serve in the army…

Olga, who did not give her last name because of fears for her husband’s fate, is distraught because Ukraine’s navy has not been given an order to evacuate. In fact, they have not been given any clear orders.

“How long is Kyiv going to keep the fleet in uncertainty? They have already given the order to land troops to move away, but what about the navy?” Olga laments…

Those who want to continue serving in the army on mainland Ukraine expect the battle to move with them.

Defense analysts in Kiev say there are between 8,000 and 10,000 Ukrainian troops deployed at about three dozen bases across Crimea, but the Ukrainian military estimates there are up to 20,000 of their troops on the peninsula.

In the Belbek air base, which has so far refused to surrender, some Ukrainian soldiers were seen leaving in pairs or threes, or packing bags and home appliances into cars. Others said they would remain inside until the end…

Nikolai, a middle-aged serviceman in camouflage fatigues, complained about a lack of orders from the higher command in Kiev and said he was willing to continue to serve in the Ukrainian forces.

“We repeatedly asked Kiev for orders, and it was radio silence, as if they were afraid to take responsibility for us,” he said. “The Russians will come, there will be some noise, and that’s it, hopefully. EU leaders have signed an agreement on closer relations with Ukraine, in a show of support following Russia’s annexation of Crimea…

The EU Association Agreement is designed to give Ukraine’s interim leadership under PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk economic and political support.

EU President Herman Van Rompuy said in a statement that the accord “recognises the aspirations of the people of Ukraine to live in a country governed by values, by democracy and the rule of law”.

Mr Yatsenyuk said this was a “historic day”, adding: “We want to be a part of the big European family and this is the first tremendous step in order to achieve for Ukraine its ultimate goal, as a full-fledged member.”…

Speaking at the end of the summit in Brussels, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was returning home “very happy,” as European leaders had been able to find a joint position on the Ukraine crisis.  http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26680250

Despite USA and EU rhetoric, as I have reported since late 2013, a split was possible, and now seems to have occurred.  Assurances by the USA seem hollow to many of the Ukrainian troops that are/were in Crimea.  Notice also the following:

Obama doesn’t grasp Putin’s Eurasian ambitions

Mr. Putin advanced a radical and dangerous argument: that the collapse of the Soviet Union left “the Russian nation” as “one of the biggest, if not the biggest ethnic group in the world to be divided by borders.” That, he suggested, gave Moscow the right to intervene in Crimea, and, by extension, anywhere it considers ethnic Russians or their culture to be threatened…

Western officials seem to be betting that Mr. Putin won’t dare to extend his aggression beyond Crimea. But then, just last week they were saying they did not expect Moscow to move quickly on Crimean annexation. The Obama administration and its European allies have been too slow to grasp that Mr. Putin is bent on upending the post-Cold War order in Europe and reversing Russia’s loss of dominion over Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

Vladimir Putin has long wanted to restore his version of a new Soviet Union which he calls the Eurasian Union.  Bible prophecy does show that a Russian-led Eurasian confederation will ultimately form (for details, see The Eurasian Union, the Kings of the East, and Bible Prophecy).

In my view, the current crisis in Ukraine is dramatically showing the Europeans that Russia does not consider Europe a credible military threat without direct USA involvement, and that the USA does not want to militarily engage Russia.  This also is showing that the Europeans that if they want to defend hoped for European Union countries like Ukraine, and even actual European Union countries, that Europe needs to have a stronger, more independent, military.   Europe has taken some steps and will take more steps in the future (see, for example, Revelation 13:4, Daniel 11:39-43, and European Technology and the Beast of Revelation).

History and Prophecy

There are descendants of the ancient Medes in the territory taken up by modern day Ukraine and Crimea.

In the first century, Josephus wrote:

Japhet, the son of Noah, had seven sons: they inhabited so, that, beginning at the mountains Taurus and Amanus, they proceeded along Asia…they called the nations by their own names…Now as to Javan and Madai, the sons of Japhet; from Madai came the Madeans, who are called Medes, by the Greeks… Thobel founded the Thobelites, who are now called Iberes; and the Mosocheni were founded by Mosoch…And so many were the countries that had the children of Japhet for their inhabitants. (Josephus. Antiquities of the Jews. VI, 1).

Some of the Russians themselves appear to have been from the Medes. Notice the following account:

But how are we to explain the name Russia? The old-fashioned view was to derive the word from the Rhoxolani. This, however, has long been abandoned. One thing is certain, namely, that these Rhoxolani were of Oriental descent, a Medic or Iranic tribe. They disappear from history, having, like so many other tribes — as, for instance, the Pechenegs and the Khozars—been swallowed up by the huge waves of immigration which overflowed the country (Morfill WR. Russia. Published 1890 by T.F. Unwin, London).

There are many disputes among academics as to who derived from whom, thus it is not completely clear, for example, that the Rhoxolani were Medes who went to Russia.  However, if the Rhoxolani were Medes and they are essentially Russian, then it would seem to be consistent with certain biblical prophecies.

If the Medes are instead the main people in the west of Ukraine, ultimately, even if they some day join Europe, the Bible shows that they will support a force against end time Europe. Those called Medes are also shown to destroy the final Babylon according to both Isaiah and Jeremiah:

1 The burden against Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw…

17 “Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them,
Who will not regard silver;
And as for gold, they will not delight in it.
18 Also their bows will dash the young men to pieces,
And they will have no pity on the fruit of the womb;
Their eye will not spare children.
19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms,
The beauty of the Chaldeans’ pride,
Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. (Isaiah 13:1, 17-19)

11 Make the arrows bright!  Gather the shields! The Lord has raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes. For His plan is aagainst Babylon to destroy it, Because it is the vengeance of the Lord, The vengeance for His temple. (Jeremiah 51:11)

27 Set up a banner in the land, Blow the trumpet among the nations! Prepare the nations against her, Call the kingdoms together against her: Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. Appoint a general against her; Cause the horses to come up like the bristling locusts. 28 Prepare against her the nations, With the kings of the Medes, Its governors and all its rulers, All the land of his dominion. 29 And the land will tremble and sorrow; For every purpose of the Lord shall be performed against Babylon, To make the land of Babylon a desolation without inhabitant. (Jeremiah 51:27-29)

Catholics may find it of interest to note that even among their scholars, it is taught that the “Babylon” of Jeremiah 51:11 is referring to a European power: “the Roman Empire” (Kurz W. What Does the Bible Say About End Time? A Catholic View. Nihil Obstat: Hilarion Kistner, Imprimatur: +Carl Moeddel, July 19, 2004. Servant Books, 2004, pp. 48-49).

Both Russia and the European Union are truly interested in Ukraine.

But what about Europe?

In the Book of Daniel, it is prophesied that a little horn would develop and would mainly expand South and East into what apparently is becoming a European entity (Daniel 8:9-12). Ukraine is south and mainly east of the nations that once were part of Benelux–the ‘entity’ that eventually grew into the European Union. So Ukraine, for a while at least, may end up supporting Europe. The Bible shows that all the world will worship the beast (Revelation 13:4,8), so that will include those of the Ukraine. However, that does not mean that all Ukrainians must be part of the Beast’s empire.

As I have mentioned before, if most of those in western Ukraine are not descendants of the Medes (and I have not seen DNA or specific genetic evidence on this, mainly reports from historians related to the general region), I had expected a split in Ukraine, with the western portion attempting to be part of the European Union, which is now what seems to be happening (although Russia could stop this militarily). Yet, even if those in the west are Medes and even if they do end up in the European Union, note that Bible prophecy teaches that the Medes will turn against the end time Babylonian power that will fully arise in Europe.

Many in Ukraine are scared and frightened and need our prayers.  While many seem to be placing their hope in the European Union, that will not turn out well according to many biblical prophecies (e.g. Revelation 18-19).

Tomorrow, March 22, 2014 has been designated as “Global Water Day” by the United Nations. Here is are some reports about the day and water:

International Water Day, in which UNESCO is the lead agency, is celebrated annually on 22 March. This year, the theme is: “Water and Energy”.

In her annual World Water Day message, the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, took the time to highlight that, “Water is fundamental to life and it is the common denominator of all sustainable development challenges and that we need water to produce food and also to produce energy”.

We were also reminded that on this World Water Day 2014 that, “We need to better understand the complex interactions between resources that are closely interlinked, such as water, food and energy and we must acknowledge that it is impossible to manage these resources sustainably if we treat them in isolation as each mode of energy production has implications for the quantity and quality of water available”, she continued.  http://www.sknvibes.com/news/newsdetails.cfm/86260

In California, we are having a severe drought. Because of the ability to pump water from wells (which requires electricity) mainly only farmers have noticed some of the severe affects of the drought.  But California, and other places, are being impacted.

783 million people lack access to clean or relatively safe water and 37 percent of the world’s population doesn’t have access to toilets…

“Access to sanitation facilities around the world, more than any other service, provides a window into the vast difference between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots.” Catarina de Albuquerque, UN Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation, said in a press release.

In Africa alone, women and children spend 40 billion hours annually collecting water. While taking on this backbreaking effort, they’re also subjected to harassment and sexual assault along the way in unprotected areas…

Water scarcity could cause major food shortages in the foreseeable future, experts have warned…

Diarrhea is the second biggest killer of kids globally — an issue that is completely preventable. The United Nations has launched a campaign to lift a deadly taboo on talking about toilets and to turn the world into an “open defecation-free zone”.

The move is part of activities to mark the World Water Day.

The initiative aims to cut the 3,000 children under five who die each day from water-borne diseases like cholera, dysentry and diarrhea, and the 2.5 billion people without access to a toilet.

“Here is a silent disaster which needs to have attention,” UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson, a pioneer in unsanitised talk about toilets, said on Friday…

The practice is “a fact of life” for the hundreds of millions of chronically poor people who have to go to toilet in the open air.

Can you imagine the lack of dignity around this act, the risk of being raped if you are a woman or a girl going out at night, but also the health risk for personal health and the environment?” the UN official asked.

Cutting by half the number of people with no access to fresh water by 2015 was one of the eight Millennium Development Goals on health and poverty set in 2000.

Without mentioning here what the Bible teaches about weather and rain (some of which can be found in the article Weather Blessings and Sorrows), a point about sanitation should be considered now. Notice the following:

12 “Also you shall have a place outside the camp, where you may go out; 13 and you shall have an implement among your equipment, and when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and turn and cover your refuse. 14 For the Lord your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and give your enemies over to you; therefore your camp shall be holy, that He may see no unclean thing among you, and turn away from you. (Deuteronomy 23:12-14)

So, the Bible teaches that there should be places designated for defecation and that human feces should be covered and not seen. This was written over three thousand years ago and still would improve human health today if places that do not heed this would now do so.

While obviously it would be helpful to have toilets in private locations, as far as the water-borne diseases like cholera, dysentery, and diarrhea that accompany poor elimination habits, if the biblical injunction to cover human feces was followed, the incidents of those diseases would be reduced.

The laws of God work and will be implemented around the world when Jesus returns and sets up His kingdom. But until then, there are even more troubles and sorrows expected.

(Reuters) – Europe took the final step to complete a banking union on Thursday with an agency to shut failing euro zone banks, but there will be no joint government back-up to pay the costs of closures.

The breakthrough ends an impasse with the European Parliament, which persuaded euro zone countries to strengthen the scheme. It completes the second pillar of banking union, which starts at the end of the year when the European Central Bank takes over as watchdog.

But there still are issues that really have not been fully resolved:

The 18 euro zone countries do not intend to cover jointly the cost of dealing with individual bank failures, a central tenet of the original plan for banking union.

Germany resisted pressure from Spain and France to make such a concession. Its finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble welcomed new rules forcing bank creditors to take losses and that “the mutualised liability … remained ruled out” – a reference to sharing the burden of a bank collapse.

So, when this has problems, Germany will not be contractually required to bail it out.  It may, of course, decide to later do so, but more on its terms.  There remains major differences in Europe, but those were actually prophesied.

The Bible clearly shows that the end time European Beast power will not be totally cohesive, will contain weak and strong parts, and be partly fragile:

41 Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. 43 As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. (Daniel 2:41-43)

The Bible also teaches that a European power will control much of the world’s economy and for a time:

15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666. (Revelation 13:15-18)

A ‘banking union’ is a step towards the ability to control buying and selling.

The Bible also teaches that a successfully warring power will emerge again in Europe (Daniel 11:29-44). The Bible specifically shows that this warring Babylonian Beast power will be so successful the world will marvel (Revelation 13:4).

This will likely take technology to fulfill this as the European King of the North power will takeover the country with the “strongest fortresses” according to Daniel 11:39. In the 21st century, is that not now the USA?. The Bible shows that the USA will be taken over by a European power (see also the video: Can You Prove that the Beast to Come is European?), despite its current and future fragility.

A fragile banking union is a step towards the prophesied ‘unity’ coming to Europe.

US President Barack Obama sent a message to Iran today:

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama sent a video message to Iranians on Thursday to say there is a chance to reach a nuclear agreement with Iran if Tehran takes verifiable steps to assure the West its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

“I’m under no illusions. This will be difficult,” Obama said in a message to mark the Iranian holiday Nowruz. “But I’m NEWS1committed to diplomacy because I believe there is the basis for a practical solution.”

The United States and five other major powers are trying to reach a comprehensive deal to deny Iran a nuclear bomb capability after reaching a six-month temporary deal implemented on Jan. 20…

Obama’s Nowruz message was aimed at fostering good will with the Iranian people and encouraging them to welcome a nuclear agreement.

“There is a chance to reach an agreement if Iran takes meaningful and verifiable steps to assure the world that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only,” he said. “Iran would have access to peaceful nuclear energy.”

Obama’s Iran overture is not without controversy in the US Congress. A wide majority of US senators this week urged Obama to insist that any final agreement state that Iran “has no inherent right to enrichment under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.”

In his Nowruz message, Obama said a comprehensive agreement would help move Iran along a new path and ease the economic hardships that sanctions have caused.

“If Iran meets its international obligations, we know where the path of dialogue and greater trust and cooperation can lead. Some in Israel do not have confidence that Barack Obama will stop Iran and that Israel will have to take steps itself:

Ukraine may have been the final straw to convince Ya’alon that Obama is really going to let Iran go nuclear. And that if the Shiite bomb is going to be stopped, it’s going to be stopped by Israel…

Jerusalem could not afford to rely on US President Barack Obama to lead an action against Iran’s nuclear program, Ya’alon reportedly said. Israel had believed that “the one who should lead the campaign against Iran is the US,” but instead, “the US at a certain stage began negotiating with them, and unfortunately in the Persian bazaar the Iranians were better,” he said. Therefore, “we have to look out for ourselves.”

Obama Inc. is predictably reacting by throwing a fit. Obama inc. was furious after Ya’alon called Kerry “messianic”. I reported about the Israeli Defense Ministers comments a couple of days ago (see Israelis worried that USA’s approach to Ukraine leaves them vulnerable to Iran, etc.).  It may be because of his comments that Barack Obama decided to make and send the video.  But, many are having doubts about the USA President’s rhetoric because of what happened in Crimea.

Since its meetings with the West about its nuclear intentions this past Fall, Iran has announced new nuclear centrifuges. Evidence has also come out that its nuclear intentions have not clearly been entirely peaceful (see Iranian report suggests Iran has wanted nuclear weapons because of the mystical 12th Imam).

Nuclear centrifuges, which Iran keeps trying to perfect (see Iran boasts of new nuclear centrifuges), basically help enrich uranium to the point that it can be used to develop nuclear energy or nuclear bombs. It is not necessary to substantially enrich uranium for peaceful nuclear power purposes. While Iran is publicly claiming their intentions are peaceful, many believe that its real goal is to produce nuclear weapons, hence improved centrifuges will give it a better ability to make weapons.

Iran’s use of nuclear bombs or dirty bombs (conventional bombs containing radioactive materials) would be dangerous and may well result in its neutralization. As regular readers of the COGwriter news page are aware, I have been warning for some time that a regional war involving Iran, Israel, the USA, and/or Syria seems likely.  Since US President Obama has been a bit disgraced by the Crimean situation, it is likely that he is looking for an opportunity to make a show of force to prove that he is not just about rhetoric.  The fact that he was involved in bombing Libya, etc., shows that he will engage USA forces when he feels he wants to.  He may or not do so to support Israel.  But Iran at some point in time will be neutralized (which could possibly instead come from internal unrest and change).

“Neutralizing” Iran would allow most of the other Islamic states (like Saudi Arabia and Egypt) to continue to exist (Syria might not do well per Isaiah 17:1) and allow for the rising of the prophesied King of the South to rise up.

The top leadership of Iran has a Shi’ite Muslim agenda, which they have concluded includes causing chaos and war. I, for one, do not believe that Iran’s leaders have given up on their goals of Islamic domination.

What are the origins of the non-indigenous peoples of Canada?

Since the word Canada is not mentioned directly as such in the Bible, in order to find out about Canada in the Bible, we need to try to identify the ancestors of the Canadians. Now, like many nations, Canada is made up of peoples of all races, so to be more specific to Canada, the identity of the primary ancestors of the Canadians needs to be identified.

As far back as the Book of Genesis, God promised Abram that he would be the father of many nations:

As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. 5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you (Genesis 17:4-6).

Notice that the promise was for Abraham’s descendants to be “many nations”—this simply is not fulfilled by the split into the two nations of Judah and Israel (1 Kings 12:17-20) in the Old Testament.  Also, since Sarah Abraham’s wife was promised to be the mother of “nations” (Genesis 17:16) this shows that there are nations descended from Sarah’s only son Isaac—hence the descendants of Abraham through Ishmael is not what God was referring to.

And Canada is one of those “many nations” that descended from Abraham.

Furthermore, notice what God promised to Sarah’s grandson Jacob:

14 Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed (Genesis 28:14).

11 Also God said to him: “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body (Genesis 35:11).

Thus it should be clear to those willing to see that the descendants of Jacob would include multiple nations, and not be limited to just the area of Palestine.  The old British Commonwealth would seem to fit the description of “a company of nations” better than any other group throughout history because of its vast size and its wealth.  And the nations of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (who were all part of that Commonwealth) still do to this day.

This expansion to a group of nations simply did not happen to the ancient nations of Judah and Israel in Palestine. Thus, many of the prophecies in the Bible are referring to places other than the tiny nation of Israel in the Middle East.

Moses himself wrote that God promised blessings to Joseph’s sons:

13 And of Joseph he said:

“Blessed of the LORD is his land,
With the precious things of heaven, with the dew,
And the deep lying beneath,
14 With the precious fruits of the sun,
With the precious produce of the months,
15 With the best things of the ancient mountains,
With the precious things of the everlasting hills,
16 With the precious things of the earth and its fullness,
And the favor of Him who dwelt in the bush.
Let the blessing come ‘on the head of Joseph,
And on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.’
17 His glory is like a firstborn bull,
And his horns like the horns of the wild ox;
Together with them
He shall push the peoples
To the ends of the earth;
They are the ten thousands of Ephraim,
And they are the thousands of Manasseh.” (Deuteronomy 33:13-17).

Thus, blessings were promised to these peoples. These are blessings that history seems to show were given to the British and American-descended peoples.

Furthermore, notice these prophecies for the latter days by Jacob for his descendants:

1 And Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days:

2 “Gather together and hear, you sons of Jacob, And listen to Israel your father…

22 “Joseph is a fruitful bough, A fruitful bough by a well; His branches run over the wall.
23 The archers have bitterly grieved him, Shot at him and hated him.
24 But his bow remained in strength, And the arms of his hands were made strong
By the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob (From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel),
25 By the God of your father who will help you, And by the Almighty who will bless you
With blessings of heaven above, Blessings of the deep that lies beneath, Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26 The blessings of your father Have excelled the blessings of my ancestors, Up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills.
They shall be on the head of Joseph, And on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers (Genesis 49:1-2,22-26).

It is only the United States and the groups of English nations now composed of the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand who have historically fulfilled these prophecies given to Abraham and his descendants (and they are separated from their “brothers” on continental Europe). Perhaps it should be pointed out that a “fruitful bough” with “branches run over the wall” implies a colonizing people–and perhaps no peoples did more colonizing than the British.

Jacob also taught about two of Joseph’s sons:

16 Bless the lads; Let my name be named upon them, And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; And let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth…

19 “…He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.” 20 So he blessed them that day, saying, “By you Israel will bless, saying, ‘May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!’ ” (Genesis 48:19-20).

It should also be mentioned that since Jacob’s name was changed to Israel (Genesis 32:28), that in the first statement above he is clearly indicating that biblically one or both of the sons of Joseph could be referred to by the name Israel.  And although Manasseh was born first, God had Jacob give the “right hand” blessing to Ephraim (Genesis 48:13-14) and God later declared, “Ephraim is my firstborn” (Jeremiah 31:9).  This may be why Ephraim (the British Commonwealth, including Canada) emerged as a major power before the USA (and of course it lost its position as the top international power).

Notice also the following related to origins:

JOSEPH – Canada.

Canada, on the whole, belongs to the Domain of Joseph.

The motto means from “Sea to Sea” and refers to the extent of Canada’s area but the phrase itself is a quotation from the Bible where it is used three times, once (Amos 8 12-13) describing the future thirst before the Messianic era and twice (Zechariah 9:10 and Psalms 72:8) in conjunction with the Reign of Messiah in the Future. While I would have preferred that the above author specified ‘millennial era’ as opposed to ‘Messianic era,’ the motto of Canada is consistent with biblical prophecies. Ephraim is mentioned in Zechariah 9:10, though the dominion from sea to sea appears to be a reference to Jesus.  The motto from “Sea to Sea” is on the Canadian Coat of Arms (shown at the beginning of this article).

What about the French speakers of Quebec?

The French-speaking (Francophone) peoples in Canada may be made up of the descendants of Jacob through his son Joseph (via his son Ephraim) and/or his son Reuben along with some of other groups. Reuben was the firstborn of Jacob, but because of his sexual misbehavior (Genesis 35:22), he lost that birthright (Genesis 49:3-4; 1 Chronicles 5:1-2).

At least one writer has asserted that those in Quebec are primarily descended from those of Ephraimite background, as well as from Benjamites and Simeonites. Notice the following:

The French Canadians originated mainly in the Provinces of Normandy and Britanny. Normandy had been settled by the Normans who later conquered England and who derived from Benjamin while Brittany had previously been populated by the Samnete (from Simeon) and was later occupied by “Celtic” refugees from Britain who gave it its name (“Britanny” and Britain) and who also comprised contingents from Simeon, such as the Simeni, Semoni, Iceni, and the sons of Semuen.

The “British” colonizers of French “Brittany” were Celts who were fleeing from the Anglo-Saxons and their federates…The Normans included a good proportion of Breton natives of Celtic origin who had been Normanicised…The descendants of Ephraim were paramount amongst the Anglo-Saxon invaders and seem to have been also present amongst the Celtic British natives, apart from Eran in Ireland and Scotland. Scientists are expecting a solar event in the next several months:

In a major relief to all living on Earth, the scientists have said that our planet has fortunately missed encounter with a fierce solar magnetic storm in the year 2012, an event that could have wreaked havoc with the electrical grid, disabling satellites and GPS had it come nine days earlier.According to the researchers, if the massive eruptions had came nine days earlier it would have hit the planet badly with destroying the electrical grid, disabling satellites and Global Positioning System, besides disturbing our electronic lives.

They say, the ignition spot on the solar surface was aimed at Earth nine days before.

Following analysis of the 2012 event, researchers concluded that a huge outburst on the Sun on July 22 propelled a magnetic cloud through the solar wind at a peak speed of more than 2,000 kilometres per second – four times the typical speed of a magnetic storm…

Researcher Janet G Luhmann from the University of California, Berkeley says, “Had it hit the Earth, it probably would have been like the big Carrington event of 1859, but the effect today, with our modern technologies, would have been tremendous.”

Researchers have carried a study to analyse the total losses of such events. The study, conducted last year, estimated that the cost of a solar storm like the Carrington Event could reach USD 2.6 trillion worldwide.

“An extreme space weather storm – a solar super-storm – is a low-probability, high-consequence event that poses severe threats to critical infrastructures of the modern society. The cost of an extreme space weather event, if it hits Earth, could reach trillions of dollars with a potential recovery time of 4-10 years. Because of the dependency of Western societies on electricity, computers, etc., the West is certainly vulnerable to massive upheavals in the event of a massive solar flare or something that affects the earth electrically (emp-type bombs also come to mind). I suspect that there will be major electrical sorrows and troubles before the end (cf. Mark 13:8b,c).

Solar storms and the related damage were discussed in my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect. Here are several passages related to them, which helps show what could happen if a massive solar flare-up did not miss:

Solar Storm Warning: Researchers announced that a storm is coming—the most intense solar maximum in fifty years. The prediction comes from a team led by Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)…

Solar physicist David Hathaway of the National Space Science & Technology Center (NSSTC)…has confidence in the conveyor belt model and agrees with Dikpati that the next solar maximum should be a doozy. But he disagrees with one point…a storm is coming.

Solar outbursts have been proposed that could essentially wipe out modern civilization.

Notice a scenario that is based on a report from the U.S. National Academy of Scientists (although the precise date seems to be speculative):

IT IS midnight on 22 September 2012 and the skies above Manhattan are filled with a flickering curtain of colourful light…Within 90 seconds, the entire eastern half of the US is without power.

A year later and millions of Americans are dead and the nation’s infrastructure lies in tatters. The World Bank declares America a developing nation. Europe, Scandinavia, China and Japan are also struggling to recover from the same fateful event – a violent storm, 150 million kilometres away on the surface of the sun…

According to the NAS report, a severe space weather event in the US could induce ground currents that would knock out 300 key transformers within about 90 seconds, cutting off the power for more than 130 million people…

First to go – immediately for some people – is drinkable water…With no electricity to pump water from reservoirs, there is no more…There is simply no electrically powered transport: no trains, underground or overground…For hospitals, that would mean about 72 hours of running a bare-bones, essential care only, service. After that, no more modern healthcare.

The truly shocking finding is that this whole situation would not improve for months, maybe years…

There also seems to be a couple of Mayan predictions recorded in the 16^th century that suggest some type of solar flare-up will affect the earth:

Chilam Balam (Mayan priest): Heaven and earth shall burn…It is the holy judgment, the holy judgment.

Napuctun (Mayan priest): It shall burn on earth; there shall be a circle in the sky.

Another N.A.S.A./N.O.A.A. report has indicated that the next solar cycle peak may be later, like May 2013… The Bible itself warns of a time of scorching solar heat (Revelation 16:8-9…)…

that flood and other prophecies are expected before 2030 (but after 2012)…

Whether or not one believes secular scientists who assert that humans are causing “global warming,” and islands will be submerged, the Bible is clear that a time of high heat will happen, probably worsened by a solar flare-up of some type. It also mentions the islands being gone:

⁸ Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. ⁹ And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory…every island fled away (Revelation 16:8-9, 20).

The signs will be powerful. And the Babylonian power will fall during the Day of the Lord (Revelation 18:2).

So, my 2012 book was right that the scorching heat and certain other prophecies would not happen until after 2012.  But heat and others troubles will happen.

The Bible warns about a time in the Book of Revelation of solar disturbances:

8 Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. 9 And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory. (Revelation 16:8-9)

Although at least one “2012” book has tried somewhat to tie the “solar flare” disaster into the Mayan date (Joseph LE. Apocalypse 2012: An Investigation into Civilization’s End. Broadway, 2008; and that author distanced himself from aspects of his book before the Mayan date), the prophesied real time of scorching solar heat cannot come for several years. Though electrical problems with solar flares have happened in the past, and those can occur almost any time.

On December 19, 2102 I reported:

Even though there could be some solar flare damage on 12/21/12, the “big one” that many scientists are concerned about will not happen this week. (see Solar flare threat is real, but the biblical ‘big one’ is not this week)

And there was no major solar storm damage then.

Of course, in the future, there are real electrical risks for the USA, Canada, UK, and other nations. But most ignore warning signs. Will you?
