Last Day ULB: Did You Learn?

Unleavened Bread

COGwriter

Last night began the last day of unleavened bread, which will end tonight at sunset this year.

Christians are supposed to submit to God and eat unleavened bread each of these days (though the basically Christian UCG does not actually teach this, please see UCG and Its Unleavened Bread Study Paper):

6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the LORD; seven days you must eat unleavened bread. 7 On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no customary work on it. 8 But you shall offer an offering made by fire to the LORD for seven days. The seventh day shall be a holy convocation; you shall do no customary work on it.’ ”  (Leviticus 23:6-8)

Avoiding leaven, while consuming unleavened bread, shows us that true Christians are not part of the world.

In several places, the New Testament tries to remind Christians not to be separate from the world.  Here is two examples:

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him (1 John 2:15).

16…For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

“I will dwell in them
And walk among them.
I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.”

17 Therefore

“Come out from among them
And be separate, says the Lord.
Do not touch what is unclean,
And I will receive you.”  (2 Corinthians 6:16-17)

But just being different than the world is not enough.

Just having the outward appearance of true religion is not enough.  Notice something that the Pharisees were condemned for:

1…Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy (Luke 12:1).

23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! 25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness (Matthew 23:22-28).

A primarily outward focus of religion puffs one up and can lead to hypocrisy.

Leaven makes bread appear larger than it should be.  People, including believers, need to take heed that we are not like the Pharisees and focus mainly on the outward appearance of true religion.

To take it a step further, even though God indicated that Job was the most righteous person then on the earth (Job 1:8), Job (being human) was himself puffed up with a “spiritual leaven” in a sense as he justified himself and condemned God (cf. Job 32:2; 40:8).  Job needed to learn that God is truly righteous and does not have any injustice–and this is apparently why he had to endure the severe trial that he did.

We are not to be like Job and try to justify ourselves above God.  After severe trials, Job finally learned that he was wrong about that (Job 42:1-6).

Hopefully we can learn from Job’s example (cf. 1 Corinthians 10:11) so perhaps some of the trials we will fact in the coming years will not have to be so severe.  And even when we do experience various trials, we need to remember the following:

28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing (James 1:2-4).

As difficult as it seems, we are to strive to follow Jesus’ admonition:

48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect (Matt 5:47-48).

That can be hard in the best of times, but more so during times of severe trials.

Since all sin (Romans 3:23) we of ourselves cannot attain to God’s high standards alone.  We need to all recognize that we need not only Christ’s sacrifice, but that we need Jesus to live His life in ours:

20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me (Galatians 2:20).

This is part of the lesson Christians are to learn by observing the Days of Unleavened Bread and the rest of the Holy Days that God has given His people.  God has a plan of salvation that we can be part of know, but on His terms–and all not called now will be called later.  But that will also be on His terms.

Why?

Because God is love (1 John 4:16) and He really does know what is best for us (Romans 8:28), despite the fact that it is not always clear to us (cf. 1 Corinthians 13:12).

Only with God’s help, with Christ living in us, can we obtain that which we diligently strive for in this age.  And the same will be true for others in the age to come.

C. Difficile Pestilence?

A pathogen seems to be re-emerging primarily because of excess use of antibiotics.

A Deadly Germ Unleashed by Antibiotics

New York Times – April 13, 2009
For years, health officials have sounded the alarm about overuse of antibiotics and the emergence of so-called “superbugs” that resist treatment. But the spread of a deadly germ linked with antibiotic use shows just how immediate the threat really is.
The culprit is Clostridium difficile, a bacteria that can cause life-threatening infection, diarrhea and stomach pain.
What is so frightening about C. difficile is that it is typically triggered by a round of antibiotic use. In addition to killing the targeted infections, antibiotics wipe out beneficial bacteria, which can make a body more vulnerable to C. difficile infection.                                                                      http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/13/a-deadly-germ-unleashed-by-antibiotics/?apage=3

Pestilences were one of the signs that Jesus discussed when He mentioned “the beginning of sorrows”:

And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows (Matthew 24:7-8).

Drug-resistant pathogens are likely to cause problems in the next several years.

CGG: Pakistan May Collapse

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Nostradamus

At its website, CGG had the following world news article:

Warning that Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

  • Paul McGeough
  • April 13, 2009

PAKISTAN could collapse within months, one of the more influential counter-insurgency voices in Washington says.

The warning comes as the US scrambles to redeploy its military forces and diplomats in an attempt to stem rising violence and anarchy in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

“We have to face the fact that if Pakistan collapses it will dwarf anything we have seen so far in whatever we’re calling the war on terror now,” said David Kilcullen, a former Australian Army officer who was a specialist adviser for the Bush administration and is now a consultant to the Obama White House.

“You just can’t say that you’re not going to worry about al-Qaeda taking control of Pakistan and its nukes,” he said.

As the US implements a new strategy in Central Asia so comprehensive that some analysts now dub the cross-border conflict “Obama’s war”, Dr Kilcullen said time was running out for international efforts to pull both countries back from the brink.

When he unveiled his new “Afpak” policy in Washington last month, the US President, Barack Obama, warned that while al-Qaeda would fill the vacuum if Afghanistan collapsed, the terrorist group was already rooted in Pakistan, plotting more attacks on the US.

“The safety of people round the world is at stake,” he said.

Laying out the scale of the challenges facing the US in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Dr Kilcullen put the two countries invaded by US-led forces after the September 11 attacks on the US on a par – each had a population of more than 30 million.

“But Pakistan has 173 million people and 100 nuclear weapons, an army which is bigger than the American army, and the headquarters of al-Qaeda sitting in two-thirds of the country which the Government does not control,” he told the Herald . http://www.smh.com.au/world/warning-that-pakistan-is-in-danger-of-collapse-within-months-20090412-a40u.html

What will happen to Pakistan is not totally clear.  But there was an odd prophecy from the Catholic seer called Nostradamus, and followed with the Comment from a Catholic writer named Yves Dupont:

Quatrain 50:

Under the sign of Libra, America shall reign, Shall hold power in the sky and on land, Shall never perish under Asian forces, Until seven Pontificates have passed. (Cited in Dupont, p.94)

Comment: As a great world power, the U.S.A. began its “reign” during the first World War–but it was not the greatest world power; in 1918 … In 1945, however, the U.S.A. was, by and large, the greatest world power. I think it is from the reign of Pius XII that the seven Pontificates must be counted, and this brings us to the last Pope according to St. Malachy’s list–when the world will end. (comment is from the Catholic writer Yves Dupont personally in 1973, Catholic Prophecy: The Coming Chastisement, p.94)

Five “pontificates” have past, one exists, and one is left per the Malachy list of pontiffs.

It appears that these Catholic writings suggest that the end of the USA will thus be in the 21st century as that is when the last pope would need to appear (only one is left on the Malachy list that was put together in 1143 A.D.).  As far as Asian forces go, this could be interpreted to include terrorists from places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, and others parts of Asia (Barack Obama has clearly decided to increase the US military presence  in Afghanistan)–but it could mean nothing at all.

While the Bible does not seem to specify conflict between the USA and Pakistan/Afghanistan, it foretells a time of the collapse and destruction of the USA and its Anglo-allies.

It is highly possible that the situations in Pakistan and Afghanistan may be the straw that helps break the back of the USA’s military as it is already stretched a bit too thin.

Pope Says to Be Unleavened

Pope Benedict XVI Sitting & Wearing White

Pope Benedictus XVI

COGwriter

The Pope has endorsed the idea that the last events of Jesus’ human life paralleled Jewish practices:

Pope Urges Christians to Be “New Dough”

Offers Pauline Reflection on Passover Rituals

VATICAN CITY, APRIL 12, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Just as Jews remove unleavened bread from their households at Passover to signify a new beginning, Christians should remove from their hearts the “yeast of old sin,” says Benedict XVI.

The Pope said this in his homily for Easter Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, in which he reflected on a passage of 1 Corinthians: “Christ, our Paschal lamb, has been sacrificed.” He said the passage “contains, in an impressive synthesis, a full awareness of the newness of life in Christ.”

“The central symbol of salvation history — the Paschal lamb — is here identified with Jesus, who is called ‘our Paschal lamb,'” the Pontiff explained. He noted the Jewish practice of sacrificing a lamb each year at Passover, “commemorating the liberation from slavery in Egypt.”

“In his passion and death, Jesus reveals himself as the Lamb of God, ‘sacrificed’ on the Cross, to take away the sins of the world,” said the Holy Father. “He was killed at the very hour when it was customary to sacrifice the lambs in the Temple of Jerusalem.

“The meaning of his sacrifice he himself had anticipated during the Last Supper, substituting himself — under the signs of bread and wine — for the ritual food of the Hebrew Passover meal. Thus we can truly say that Jesus brought to fulfillment the tradition of the ancient Passover, and transformed it into his Passover.”

Room for the new

Basing himself on this interpretation of the Paschal feast, Benedict XVI then continued to reflect on St. Paul’s interpretation of the “leaven.”

He explained that during Passover the Jewish custom is to remove every scrap of leavened bread from the household, which serves as a reminder of when their forefathers left Egypt, taking with them only unleavened bread.

“At the same time, though,” the Pope added, “the ‘unleavened bread’ was a symbol of purification: removing the old to make space for the new.”

The Holy Father said that St. Paul explains that the ancient tradition acquires a new meaning with Christ, “once more derived from the new ‘Exodus,’ which is Jesus’ passage from death to eternal life.”

“Since Christ, as the true Lamb, sacrificed himself for us, we too, his disciples — thanks to him and through him — can and must be the ‘new dough,’ the ‘unleavened bread,’ liberated from every residual element of the old yeast of sin: no more evil and wickedness in our heart,” he said.

“Let us open our spirit to Christ, who has died and is risen in order to renew us,” Benedict XVI urged,” in order to remove from our hearts the poison of sin and death, and to pour in the life-blood of the Holy Spirit: divine and eternal life.” http://www.zenit.org/article-25643?l=english

Perhaps now, he will reconsider and try turn his church back to original Christianity?

That would be an excellent move, but not one I am anticipating.

The fact of history is that the early faithful Christians actually observed the Days of Unleavened Bread, but Rome does not.

Those who wish to truly understand what happened to his church and many mainline churches should carefully study the following:

Kirill Working Toward Slavic Unity

Metropolitan Kirill

COGwriter

Byelorussian President Alexander Lukashenko met with head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Kirill:

13 April 2009, 14:48

Lukashenko hopes Russian Church to actively help in strengthening Slavic unity

Minsk, April 13, Interfax – Byelorussian President Alexander Lukashenko believes the Russian Orthodox Church will be more active in building unity between Byelorussia and Russia.

“We much anticipate and believe that the Russian Orthodox Church should become a more active participant in the process of uniting our states, and perhaps even in uniting Slavic civilization based on Byelorussia, Ukraine and Russia,” Lukashenko told journalists in Minsk speaking on the results of his Friday meeting with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.

“I asked the Patriarch to get involved in these questions,” he said.

According to Lukashenko, he informed Patriarch Kirill about Byelorussian-Russian relations, “about the problems that are not worth sixpence, but suppress creating of this center of Slavic, Orthodox civilization.”

He is convinced that “the Church shouldn’t stand apart from the processes (of allied building – IF).

Commenting on a long conversation he had with the Patriarch, the Byelorussian head confessed, “We were very frank. God forbid anyone could ever learn what and how we were talking. It’s our private matters connected with our Slavic unity.”

The President said they also discussed relations between Orthodox and Catholic Churches and Patriarch Kirill “opened his eyes on many issues.”

Lukashenko also stressed that Patriarch Kirill stood for “strengthening the entire Christian world” and the Russian Church Primate “doesn’t reject Catholics, the Catholic world.” http://www.interfax-religion.com/?act=news&div=5920

The result of these meetings is likely to assist in the formation of a new ecumenical religion that will, for a while, be accepted around the world.  However, Bible prophecy indicates that Russia (and apparently the rest of the Russian Orthodox) will eventually cause trouble for the leaders of this coming world religion.

Weinland’s 50th “Truth”

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

VS.

COGwriter

In his sermon yesterday, according to the “Don’t Drink the Flavor Aid” website, CGPFK’s Wayne Matthews stated:

I wanted to refer to something that has meaning to me personally, and I’ve had to reflect on it. So — once we had declared a particular timeline earlier in 2008. And then in late June, God in his mercy revealed to us the true timeline of the return of Jesus Christ. That had an impact on me as well. Because we, individually, had to accept error in our thinking. We had preconceived ideas, of which we still have in many other topics we’re not aware of yet. But that was one thing that we had to go through.

Now I did come to see in time that I also, like everybody else, had to challenge my own thinking. How could this be? What was I really thinking? As God revealed the truth to me through the 50th truth, I came to understand that the problem was me, that I had preconceived ideas ,and that I did not like being wrong. It was a painful experience to go through. It went through a process and I saw it reasonably quickly what was wrong. But it took time to continue to mature — and that’s still a lifelong process.

There are several problems with the above.

Let’s start by looking at the the  so-called “50th truth” according to Ronald Weinland is (according to CGPFK’s website):

The 50th Truth

This truth concerns the revelation given by God of the actual timing that leads up to the return of Jesus Christ. The Church of God has long believed that Jesus would return as the King of kings on the Feast of Trumpets. This is not true! God has reserved this revelation, for this very end-time, to be revealed just prior to the actual date that serves as an announcement for the coming of His Son to reign over all the earth.

So what is claimed to be the “50th truth” is a change in doctrine from believing that Jesus would return on the Feast of Trumpets to believing that it will be a different date.

What Wayne Matthews and those at  CGPFK now call the “50th truth” are the “reasons” that Ronald Weinland gave for spouting that one up.  Here are the reasons that CGPFK claims the “50 truth” was needed according to CGPFK’s website):

God has now given the Church to understand some of those reasons why He has chosen to reveal this great truth just before Trumpets of 2008.

1) This is part of a continuing process to make a distinction in the Church (the actual physical organization where the spiritual body of the Church is being nurtured and led through whom God is working) and all other organizations who were scattered from the Church (where God is no longer working).
2) This was reserved until now because there is a continuing spiritual battle against Satan and his demons. Satan and the demons know their time of reign is nearly over and then they will be removed from the presence of mankind for 1,000 years, but they have not fully known what that exact timing involved. God is about to expose Satan and the demon world for the true evil they are.
3) God is also going to reveal the perverted attitude and spirit of all who mock Him, His Church, and His servants. Those who scoff, criticize, ridicule, and mock God’s Church have used the occasion of this revelation to find fault with God’s Church for changing doctrine (as they see it) and timing in order to better suit their own false needs. Such critics foolishly and unwittingly put themselves in a position of judging God. The very thing they mock is the very thing that will end up being used to mock them. God is revealing the kind of hatred that has existed in the hearts of men and women toward Him and His people for nearly 6,000 years now.
4) As part of a direct relationship to the previous point, this very thing that scoffers and mockers try to use to discredit God’s end-time prophet and two witnesses is one of the very things that God will use (in a far greater way) to prove who it is through whom He is working. In reality, the fulfillment of the 50th Truth will be great evidence of God’s true servants and the events that reveal the fulfilling of this truth will put mockers and scoffers to shame.

These “reasons” are apparently what Wayne Matthews was referring to as the “50th truth”.

The truth is that Ronald Weinland clearly has changed his prophetic doctrines and timelines.

One of his changes, for example, is that Ronald Weinland claimed on February 2, 2008 that the 1335 days of Daniel began, that the 1290 days started March 18, 2008, and the 1260 days started April 17, 2008.  He stated after those dates that those prophecies were being fulfilled, but essentially that only those with his spiritual discernment could see this.  He later changed the start of the 1335 days to September 30, 2008, the 1290 days to November 14, 2008, and the 1260 days to December 14, 2008.

Certainly that was a doctrinal change to better suit his “own false needs”.

Ronald Weinland has ignored what really is supposed to happen at each of those dates even though he believes that the 1260 days do represent “a time, times, and half a time” in scripture.  So today, let’s simply look at one such scripture:

25 He shall speak pompous words against the Most High,
Shall persecute the saints of the Most High,
And shall intend to change times and law.
Then the saints shall be given into his hand
For a time and times and half a time (Daniel 7:25).

And of course, the saints have not been given into the hand of the Beast or Antichrist–this simply did not happen on December 14, 2008 (nor has it been happening since).

But apparently Ronald Weinland considers one to be a “mocker” for comparing what he claims to what the Bible actually teaches.

Notice what the Bible teaches:

20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’ 21 “And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?’– 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him (Deuteronomy 18:19-22).

According to God’s word, Ronald Weinland is a false prophet and we should be looking to see that what he claimed did not come to pass. He needs to repent or God may strike him down:

1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber (2 Peter 2:1-3).

Furthermore, perhaps I should add that Ronald Weinland’s so-called “50 Truths of God” list is supposed to include the 18 truths that Herbert W. Armstrong stated that God lead him to restore to the Philadelphia portion of the Church of God. However, instead of using the actual list from Herbert W. Armstrong, instead Ronald Weinland used the list that Joseph Tkach put together (see also The 18 Restored Truths: Do You Know What the First Changes the Tkach Administration Made?).

For those unfamiliar with CGPFK or Ronald Weinland, perhaps some background is in order.  Ronald Weinland was once a minister in the United Church of God, he left, became unitarian, declared himself a prophet, wrote a couple of books (like 2008: God’s Final Witness), declared himself one of the two witnesses (then later declared his wife to be the other) declared that the United States would be nuked by June 8, 2008, promised to stop preaching if the nuclear destruction did not occur, but kept preaching anyway.

For years the COGwriter website has warned that Ronald Weinland was a false prophet.  His so-called 50th “truth” actually helps document that.

Those interesting in learning more about the subjects in today’s post may wish to read the following articles:

Concerns About Ronald Weinland’s Church of God-Preparing for the Kingdom of God Ronald Weinland falsely claims to be one of the two witnesses God is raising up and that the end will come in 2008 (first April 17th, then June 2008, now December 14, 2008). History of Early Christianity

Today, most who profess Christ believe that Jesus was resurrected on a Sunday morning (which He was not, see What Happened in the Crucifixion Week?).  However, few realize that Easter Sunday originally was NOT a resurrection holiday, but a change in the date of Passover from the 14th of Nisan to a Sunday.

This is a documented and historic fact that rarely is reported by the main news sources, though it has long been known.

Notice what the Encyclopedia Britannica stated in 1910:

There is no indication of the observance of the Easter festival in the New Testament, or in the writings of the apostolic Fathers…The first Christians continued to observe the Jewish festivals, though in a new spirit, as commemorations of events which those festivals had foreshadowed. Thus the Passover, with a new conception added to it of Christ as the true Paschal Lamb and the first fruits from the dead, continued to be observed (Easter. In: The Encyclopaedia Britannica: A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, Literature and General Information Edition: 11 Published by Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1910 Item notes: v. 8 Original from Harvard University Digitized Jul 24, 2008, p. 828).

Beginning with possibly Telesphorus or possibly Hyginus or maybe Sixtus (there are no contemporaneous records, only an unclear report 5-6 decades later written by Irenaeus), what is now called Easter began to be observed in Rome. First, it was apparently a change in date of Passover from the 14th of Nisan to a Sunday. This is believed to have happened because there was a rebellion by Jews and that any distancing between Jews and Christians seemed physically advantageous (at least to some in Rome and the Greeks in Jerusalem). I suspect they made this change because their fear of death was greater than their fear to violate God’s word.

The late Samuele Bacchiocchi noted that the change to Easter-Sunday and to a weekly Sunday was due to persecution (the new Gentile hierarchy he is referring to are Greek bishops in Jerusalem, which took over after the rebellion was crushed):

The actual introduction of Easter-Sunday appears to have occurred earlier in Palestine after Emperor Hadrian ruthlessly crushed the Barkokeba revolt (A.D. 132-135)…

The fact that the Passover controversy arose when Emperor Hadrian adopted new repressive measures against Jewish religious practices suggests that such measures influenced the new Gentile hierarchy to change the date of Passover from Nisan 14 to the following Sunday (Easter-Sunday) in order to show separation and differentiation from the Jews and the Jewish Christians…

A whole body of Against the Jews literature was produced by leading Fathers who defamed the Jews as a people and emptied their religious beliefs and practices of any historical value. Two major causalities of the anti-Jewish campaign were Sabbath and Passover. The Sabbath was changed to Sunday and Passover was transferred to Easter-Sunday.

Scholars usually recognize the anti-Judaic motivation for the repudiation of the Jewish reckoning of Passover and adoption of Easter-Sunday instead. Joachim Jeremias attributes such a development to “the inclination to break away from Judaism.” In a similar vein, J.B. Lightfoot explains that Rome and Alexandria adopted Easter-Sunday to avoid “even the semblance of Judaism” (Bacchiocchi S. God’s Festival in Scripture and History. Biblical Perspectives. Befriend Springs (MI), 1995, pp. 101,102,103).

J.B. Lightfoot himself specifically wrote:

But the Church of Ælia Capitolina was very differently constituted from the Church of Pella and the Church of Jerusalem…not a few doubtless accepted the conqueror’s terms, content to live henceforth as Gentiles…in the new city of Hadrian. But there were others who hung to the law of their forefathers…

…the Churches of Asia Minor…regulated their Easter festival by the Jewish Passover without regard to the day of the week, but…those of Rome and Alexandria and Gaul observed another rule; thus avoiding even the semblance of Judaism (Lightfoot, Joseph Barber. Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians: A Revised Text with Introduction, Notes and Dissertations. Published by Macmillan, 1881. Original from Harvard University. Digitized Oct 16, 2006, pp. 317, 331).

This change was abhorrent to those of Asia Minor.  In the mid-2nd century, Polycarp of Smyrna actually went to Rome and tried to persuade Bishop Anicetus to change back, but ishop Anicetus refused.

Polycrates of Ephesus, in the late 2nd century, told then Bishop Victor that the faithful Christians, beginning with the Apostles John and Philip (who had lived in Asia Minor) and their spiritual descendants would continue to follow the biblical practice of observing Passover on the 14th and not switch to Sunday.

Over time, “Sunday Passover” became a resurrection holiday as opposed to a switch in the day of Passover.  Furthermore, apparently to make it more enticing to pagans, in the English language it was renamed Easter.

The Catholic Encyclopedia notes:

The English term, according to the Ven. Bede (De temporum ratione, I, v), relates to Estre, a Teutonic goddess of the rising light of day and spring...

The connection between the Jewish and the Christian Pasch explains the movable character of this feast… Nisan of the Semitic calendar was shifting from date to date on the Julian calendar. Since Christ, the true Paschal Lamb, had been slain on the very day when the Jews, in celebration of their Passover, immolated the figurative lamb, the Jewish Christians in the Orient followed the Jewish method…For this observance they claimed the authority of St. John and St. Philip…

Men and women…In the Neumark (Germany) on Easter Day the men servants whip the maid servants with switches; on Monday the maids whip the men. They secure their release with Easter eggs. These customs are probably of pre-Christian origin (Reinsberg-Düringsfeld, Das festliche Jahr, 118)…

The Easter Rabbit The Easter Rabbit lays the eggs, for which reason they are hidden in a nest or in the garden. The rabbit is a pagan symbol and has always been an emblem of fertility (Simrock, Mythologie, 551)…

The Easter Fire
The Easter Fire is lit on the top of mountains (Easter mountain, Osterberg) and must be kindled from new fire, drawn from wood by friction (nodfyr); this is a custom of pagan origin in vogue all over Europe, signifying the victory of spring over winter

(Holweck F. G. Transcribed by John Wagner and Michael T. Barrett. Easter. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume V. Copyright © 1909 by Robert Appleton Company. Online Edition Copyright © 2003 by K. Knight. Nihil Obstat, May 1, 1909. Remy Lafort, Censor. Imprimatur. +John M. Farley, Archbishop of New York).

Thus the truly faithful did not change the date, nor ever adopt the pagan name Easter.  Nor the pagan practices associated with it.

And that is still true today.

Legacy on New Currency

Today, the latest newsletter from Legacy Institute’s Leon Sexton (who is based in northern Thailand) arrived.

Here is some of what he reported:

I have here on my desk a copy of The Nation, one of Thailand’s two leading English language newspapers. The front page headline says: “IMF Chief Backs Currency Talks.” The article states, “International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn on Wednesday said talks on a new world reserve currency to replace the U.S. dollar were ‘legitimate’ and could take place ‘in the coming months.’”…

There is no doubt that we are headed for a major shift in the world’s monetary system. The United States is rapidly losing its place as the world’s number one financial broker.

The dollar will be replaced by a new world currency. One way or another, this is going to happen. The world is rapidly shifting away from the U.S. dollar as the number one currency in use. In October, 2006, the European currency (Euro) passed up the dollar in the combined value of currency in circulation.  Every year, more and more international transactions are being done in Euros and no longer in dollars. Now the Chinese have thrown in their own economic and political power behind replacing the U.S. dollar with something else. This will not be the Chinese Yuan or even the Euro. It will probably be something new and not known before. China “advocated a ‘super-sovereign reserve currency’ that’s disconnected from any individual nation.”

The Bible tells us that at the End of the Age, a final world ruling government will emerge from the legs of iron in King Nebuchadnezzar’s vision of the image in Daniel 2. There will be ten leaders or kings, represented by the ten toes. These will give their power over to a worldwide economic system.

Now, I am not going to pretend that I can tell you who those ten kings are or even how all this will happen. All I know is that IT WILL HAPPEN! And what I see on TV and read in the news tells me that it is rapidly unfolding…

The Bible tells us that someday we will not be able to buy or sell without some special “mark.”…

Rev 13:16-17 “He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.”

This includes everyone from all walks of life…

Rev 14:9-10 “Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, ‘If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation.’”

The temptation to give in will be great. We will not be able to buy anything, including food for our families. We will not be able to have jobs and earn a living. We will be unable to function in the society. How many of us will give in to temptation? How many of us will compromise and justify our actions—all the time thinking, “But God will understand?

The problem is God will not understand! That is why He gives us the warnings of Revelation 14. Will we listen to His divine warnings?

While much of what he wrote is correct, I would like to point out that we in the Living Church of God do believe that we know basically who the ten kings will be.  They will be ten European leaders.

Asia will not be officially part of this, though it will temporarily accept the religion that the Beast will endorse.  But, according to the Bible, it will cause trouble for the European King of the North.

Resurrection Was on Saturday

History of Early Christianity

COGwriter

While many Catholics consider today to be “Holy Saturday”, they (and others) often overlook the fact that Jesus was not resurrected on Sunday morning, but was resurrected late on Saturday.

First, here is one passage from the Bible:

1 On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb (John 20:1).

Notice that the Apostle John is teaching that before Sunday morning, the stone had been taken away from the tomb, hence Jesus had risen prior to Sunday morning.

Notice what was understood by some in the late second/early third century:

And again (there was) the day of the Sabbath; and then three hours of the night after the Sabbath, wherein our Lord slept. And that was fulfilled which He said: The Son of man must pass three days and three nights in the heart of the earth [Mt 12.40], as it is written in the Gospel. And again it is written in David: Behold, thou hast set my days in measure [Ps 38.6 LXX] (Didascalia Apostolorum, Chapter 21. R. Hugh Connolly, version. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1929).

Notice that the above account teaches that Jesus was resurrected late evening on a Saturday. And while we in the Living Church of God would suggest that the resurrection occurred a few hours earlier, the above account (which is often used by Roman Catholics and others) shows that Jesus was NOT understood to have been resurrected on a Sunday!

Now there was some confusion in the third century as to when Jesus rose. However, to answer that Dionysus explained that Jesus arose Saturday evening. Notice:

For the evangelists have given different descriptions of the parties who came to the sepulchre one after another, and all have declared that they found the Lord risen already. It was “in the end of the Sabbath,” as Matthew has said; it was “early, when it was yet dark,” as John writes…It is admitted, however, that those who came to the sepulchre in the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, found Him no longer lying in it. And let us not suppose that the evangelists disagree or contradict each other. But even although there may seem to be some small difficulty as to the subject of our inquiry, if they all agree that the light of the world, our Lord, rose on that one night, while they differ with respect to the hour, we may well seek with wise and faithful mind to harmonize their statements. The narrative by Matthew then, runs thus:

“In the end of the Sabbath as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. And his countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: and for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said.”

Now this phrase “in the end” will be thought by some to signify, according to the common use of the word, the evening
of the Sabbath…And Luke says:

“They rested the Sabbath-day, according to the commandment. Now, upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared; and they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.”

This phrase “very early in the morning” probably indicates the early dawn of the first day of the week; and thus, when the Sabbath itself was wholly past, and also the whole night succeeding it, and when another day had begun, they came, bringing spices and myrrh, and then it became apparent that He had already risen long before. (Dionysus. The Epistle to Bishop Basilides, Canon I. The Writings of the Fathers Down to AD 325. ANTE-NICENE FATHERS, VOLUME 6. Gregory Thaumaturgus, Dionysius the Great, Julius Africanus, Anatolius and Minor Writers, Methodius, Arnobius. Edited by Alexander Roberts, D.D. & James Donaldson, LL.D. Revised and chronologically arranged, with brief prefaces and occasional notes, by A. Cleveland Coxe, D.D. T&T CLARK, EDINBURGH, WM. B. EERDMANS PUBLISHING COMPANY. GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN).

Furthermore, according to a 19th century Roman Catholic nun called the Venerable Anne Catherine Emmerich, Jesus was resurrected by 9:00 pm on a Saturday evening:

At the close of the Sabbath…I saw an angel appear to the Blessed Virgin. He announced to her that the Lord was near…It may have been almost nine o’clock when, in a solitary place near the gate, I saw the Blessed Virgin suddenly halt in her hurried walk…I saw the most holy soul of Jesus, resplendent with light and without a trace of wound…He uttered the words: “Mary, My Mother!” and appeared to embrace her. Then He vanished…

And I now had another vision…The risen Redeemer held in His hand a delicate white staff…At the instant the angel shot down to the tomb and the earth quaked, I saw the risen Lord appearing to His Blessed Mother (Emmerich AC. Edited by Carl E. Schmoger and translated by an American nun. The Life of Jesus Christ and Biblical Revelations: From the Visions of the Venerable Anne Catherine Emmerich as recorded in the journals of Clemens Brentano, Volume IV. Nihil Obstat: Em. De Jaegher Can lib. cens. Brugis, 14 Februarii 1914. Imprimatur: A.C. De Schrevel Vic. Gen. Brugis, 14 Februarii 1914. TAN Books, Rockford (IL), 2004, pp. 357,363,364).

And while there are many scriptural errors in the above accounts, this is an approved vision from the Roman Church and it too teaches seems to teach that Jesus was resurrected before the time we now commonly call Sunday. Later portions of the above suggest that other “holy women” learned that Jesus was resurrected sometime on Sunday. Thus, it appears from A. Emmerich’s account that she believes she saw Jesus resurrected on Saturday, Jesus appeared to Mary on Saturday, and that on Sunday He appeared to others.

In 1907, a Protestant scholar wrote:

…the Bible nowhere says or implies that Jesus was crucified and died on Friday. It is said that Jesus was crucified on “the day before the Sabbath”…Now, the Bible does not leave us to speculate which Sabbath is meant in this instance; for John tells us, in so many words, in John 19:14, that the day on which Jesus was tried and crucified was “the preparation of the Passover” (emphasis added). In other words, it was not the day before the weekly Sabbath (that is, Friday), but it was the day before the Passover Sabbath, which came that year on Thursday–that is to say, the day on which Jesus Christ was crucified was Wednesday. John makes this as clear as day…

To sum it all up, Jesus died just about sunset on Wednesday. Seventy two hours later, exactly three days and three nights, at…Saturday at sunset, He arose again from the grave. (Torrey R.A. Difficulties in the Bible. Originally published 1907; Whitaker House; Updated edition, October 2003, pp. 168-169, 173).

While Jesus did die a few hours before sunset, but was put in the grave just at sunset, He would have left the grave near sunset on Saturday.

Notice also the following:

Time is relative in determining chronology of Holy Week
by Michael Miller

There’s a possibility that Good Friday should actually be Good Thursday – or maybe even Good Wednesday.

And there’s a probability that Easter Sunday should be considered Easter Saturday Evening.

Whether the events of Holy Week, the days leading up to Jesus’s death and resurrection, occurred as they are now celebrated continues to be an occasional topic of discussion and study, scholars like Kevin Zuber of Moody Bible Institute say.

The traditional chronology has Jesus having his Last Supper with his disciples on Thursday night, being crucified on Friday afternoon and being resurrected sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning.

But the only clear time references of the events in the Gospels are that he was crucified on “preparation day” for a Sabbath and his tomb was found empty early “on the first day of the week.” Jesus’s own prophecy is that he would be in the “heart of the earth” for “three days and three nights” (Matthew 12:40).

Different calendars and understandings of time have to be taken into consideration, though.

Jewish days begin and end with sunset, meaning the “first day of the week” starts at sunset Saturday. Also, with the Feast of Unleavened Bread beginning that fateful week, there may have been Sabbaths on two separate days that week – first the annual Sabbath of the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread and then the regular, weekly Sabbath on the seventh day of the week – much like there was recently. That means there could have been two separate preparation days in the same week. http://www.bendweekly.com/Living/3733.html (Miller M. Bend Time is relative in determining chronology of Holy Week. Weekly News for Oregon. March 16, 2007).

While we in the Churches of God would not agree that “time is relative” in this case, we believe that because Protestants and others do not keep the biblical Holy Days, that this is one of the reasons that they have not given much thought in the past to the idea that there were two days of preparation mentioned in the Gospels concerning Jesus death, burial, and resurrection.

But it is nice that Moody Institute (a Protestant-supporting organization) finally is realizing that the idea that Jesus died late Friday and was resurrected early Sunday appears to be problematic.

Furthermore, see what Jerry Falwell, a Sunday-keeper, and others have:

The Bible is actually silent on the precise moment of resurrection. Jesus’ followers came to His tomb before dawn on the first day of the week (Sunday), but they did not witness Him coming back to life. They merely found an empty tomb.

Even the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, a Sunday-keeper and chancellor of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., agreed with that timetable, telling WND in 2001, “I personally believe He was crucified on Wednesday evening … and rose after 6 p.m. Saturday evening.”

Most Christians today think Jesus died on a Friday and rose on Sunday. They point to Scriptures indicating a Sabbath day followed Jesus’ execution. But Sabbath-keepers claim it was not the weekly Sabbath of Saturday approaching. Rather, they say it was an annual Sabbath, a “high” holy day in the Hebrew calendar known as the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which supposedly occurred on a Thursday the week Jesus was killed. The Gospel of John mentions that Sabbath was the annual type.

“The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) … .” (John 19:31)

In other words, Sabbatarians say there was more than one day of rest that week. Their timeline has Jesus slain on Wednesday – the day before the “high day” annual Sabbath on Thursday. They believe Jesus was in the grave for a full three days and three nights, finally arising Saturday evening, the second Sabbath of the week.

The mention of “three days and three nights” is important for many, as Jesus used that phrase to prove His divine identity:

“For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so I, the Son of Man, will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.” (Matthew 12:40, New Living Translation) (Kovac, Joe. ‘Deception’: Christians war over worship day. Posted: March 16, 2008 5:24 pm Eastern. WorldNetDaily).

Hence, some do know the truth.

It is interesting to note that even into the 19th century, there was a ceremony in Rome that indicated a Saturday resurrection. Notice:

This ceremony is thus graphically described by the authoress of Rome in the 19th Century:”…the Pope himself, who walked beneath a crimson canopy, with his head uncovered, bearing the Host in a box; and this being, as you know, the real flesh and blood of Christ, was carried from the Sistine chapel through the intermediate hall to the Paulina chapel, where it was deposited in the sepulchre prepared to receive it beneath the altar…I never could learn why Christ was to be buried before He was dead, for, as the crucifixion did not take place till Good Friday, it seems odd to inter Him on Thursday. His body, however, is laid in the sepulchre, in all the churches of Rome, where this rite is practised, on Thursday forenoon, and it remains there till Saturday at mid-day, when, for some reason best known to themselves, He is supposed to rise from the grave amidst the firing of cannon, and blowing of trumpets, and jingling of bells…*”

* The above account referred to the ceremonies as witnessed by the authoress in 1817 and 1818. It would seem that some change has taken place since then, caused probably by the very attention called by her to the gross anomaly mentioned above; for Count Vlodaisky, formerly a Roman Catholic priest, who visited Rome in 1845, has informed me that in that year the resurrection took place, not at mid-day, but at nine o’clock on the evening of Saturday. This may have been intended to make the inconsistency between Roman practice and Scriptural fact appear somewhat less glaring. Still the fact remains, that the resurrection of Christ, as celebrated at Rome, takes place, …on the day of Saturn…(Hislop, Alexander. Two Babylons. Loizeaux, Neptune (NJ), Second American Edition, 1959–originally expanded in 1858).

Whether the above ceremony still exists, this writer does not know. But it is interesting that at least one Roman ceremony involving the pope acknowledged a Saturday resurrection that late. Perhaps, this ceremony was originally adopted by Rome partially because the early Romans knew that Jesus was actually resurrected on Saturday.

Thus, some have realized that Jesus was resurrected on a Saturday.

Centamin ups reserves view at Egypt gold mine
Reuters – April 9, 2009

LONDON (Reuters) – Gold explorer Centamin Egypt (CNT.AX) said the reserves estimate for its Sukari gold mine in Egypt had increased by 72 percent to 6.4 million ounces.

The firm said on Thursday this marked an increase of 2.7 million ounces from the previously reported 3.7 million ounces in March 2007.

The new reserves were based on drilling up to January 25 and used a gold price of $700 per ounce, it said.

“The ongoing drilling program has been very encouraging, and the company is confident that this will result in further additions to the reserve and resource inventory,” said Chief Executive Josef El-Raghy. http://uk.reuters.com/article/businessNews/idUKTRE5381II20090409
