Leaders arrived in Evian, France for the Group of Seven (G7)
‘An awkward family gathering’: Trump and G7 leaders convene in France amid geopolitical divergences
June 15, 2026
For weeks, President Donald Trump and his advisers have looked ahead warily to this week’s Group of Seven summit in France.
Overseeing a Middle East war stuck in a dangerous limbo between ceasefire and full-blown conflict, Trump risked arriving to the lakeside resort of Évian-les-Bains without a deal and under scrutiny from some of the world’s most powerful people.
Instead, Trump will touch down Monday eager to trumpet the accord he announced over the weekend that appears to end hostilities with Iran for now and, in the president’s telling, reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump had wanted to enter the summit of leading industrialized nations in a position of strength and with an agreement in hand, sources say. And after months of conflict and negotiations that drew immense skepticism from his fellow G7 leaders, he’ll now get that — albeit with significant, lingering questions about the specifics of the agreement and the extent to which each side will abide by it. …
Max Bergmann, the program director for Europe at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, likened the summit to an “awkward family gathering … where you have to go to your in-laws and there’s an uncle that you don’t quite like.”
“No one wants to have a confrontation, even if things get quite passive aggressive at times,” Bergmann said. “But there’s always the possibility that things might snap, and it might get rather dramatic.” https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/15/politics/g7-trump-france-gathering
Despite the potential for awkwardness, the president is not expected to play nice in the French resort town of Evian-les-Baines.
“The president is always candid with his colleagues,” a senior administration official said ahead of Trump’s departure to Europe early Monday. “We’re not afraid to have these hard conversations.”
“The reality is when we go to these meetings behind closed doors, we have very straight, straightforward conversations.”
Even with Trump announcing progress on a peace deal to end the Iran war Sunday, Europeans are still smarting from high fuel prices caused by the disruption to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, repeated threats to annex Greenland from Denmark and the president’s public second-guessing of the US role in NATO.
“Transatlantic relations are, obviously, incredibly strained,” said Bergmann, adding that Trump’s open coveting of Greenland “was quite shocking to Europe. That has led to a real breach of trust and a sense that the United States is not really a reliable partner.”
“We are increasingly seeing Europeans beginning to think about a life with less America.” https://nypost.com/2026/06/15/world-news/trump-arrives-at-g7-summit-to-face-alienated-european-leaders/
Mr. Trump’s positions on trade, the war in Ukraine and NATO have put him at odds with European leaders for years. But it is the three-month-long U.S.-Israeli war with Iran that has pushed those allies to see Mr. Trump more as a combative opponent than a reliable partner.
He has lashed out in recent weeks at leaders in Europe for not supporting the war, which has killed thousands and roiled the global economy. …
Mr. Trump has long been the odd man out at the convening of the leaders of the Group of 7, who represent seven of the world’s largest industrialized economies — Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States. …
Mr. Trump has grown more isolated.
In his visit to Switzerland in January to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mr. Trump threatened a new round of tariffs against European nations unless they acquiesced to his demands that the United States acquire Greenland. That prompted some leaders to warn that the era of relying on the United States as a credible ally appeared to be over, replaced by what Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada called “a rupture.”
“That has led to a real breach of trust and a sense that the United States is not really a reliable partner,” said Max Bergmann, the director of the Europe, Russia and Eurasia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. …
Last year, leaders showed deference to Mr. Trump with hopes that the United States would continue to support Ukraine and might persuade Russia to stop its aggression. European leaders were also angling to make trade deals as the president repeatedly threatened and imposed tariffs to extract concessions from trading partners. They also feared a broader war in the Middle East after Israel carried out a surprise attack on Iran, and a pervasive concern about the soaring costs of fuel caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
This year, they have distanced themselves from, or been outright critical of, the war with Iran, which the United States started alongside Israel in February. They are preaching self-sufficiency and asserting themselves as the leaders of the campaign to end the war in Ukraine. And the concerns about soaring energy costs are dominated by the war with Iran, which led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and which Mr. Trump has struggled to bring to an end.
But Mr. Trump has signaled that he will retaliate against his European critics. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/15/us/politics/trump-group-of-7-summit.html
More in Europe are signaling their desire for independence from the United States:
Europeans want to break free from US – survey
7 May 2026
Around 70% of people living in the EU and UK want more independence from the US and believe it’s time for Europe to “go its own way,” a new study compiled by the Germany-based research foundation Bertelsmann Stiftung indicates.
According to the survey, some 73% of respondents across the EU believe that it is time for the continent to drift away from Washington. UK respondents expressed a similar level of desire to free themselves from the clutches of the US, measuring at 67%.
The sentiment has been steadily growing across the bloc over the past few years, measuring some 63% back in 2024, the foundation noted. The level of mistrust towards the US has been growing as well, with only 42% deeming it a trustworthy partner against 46% last year, according to the researcher.
The survey, which was released on Thursday, is based on a sampling opinions of some 18,000 respondents across all 27 EU member states and some 2,000 in the UK. The polls were conducted in March this year among people aged between 18 and 69 years, with the sample meant to reflect current population distributions in terms of age, gender, and population density.
Over the past few years, EU politicians have repeatedly called for gaining more independence from Washington, primarily in terms of foreign policy and security. Such rhetoric escalated after US President Donald Trump took office early last year for the second time. https://www.rt.com/news/639590-european-want-us-independence/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=RSS
Even Canada is taking steps away from dependence upon the USA:
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says ‘new world order will be built starting with Europe’
June 13, 2026
Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney continued his efforts to pivot away from the United States and align with Europe, meeting with the leader of Ireland on Saturday ahead of the upcoming G7 summit and saying middle power countries shouldn’t compete for favor with America.
Carney said that Canada and the European Union have a combined population that is more than twice that of the United States, with a similarly sized economy and a collective defense budget that is twice that of China’s.
He said smaller nations can multiply their strength by partnering with like-minded allies.
“In a world of great power rivalry, middle powers have a choice — to compete for favor or to combine to create a third path with impact,” Carney said at Trinity College in Dublin. …
“The new world order will be built starting with Europe,” Carney said at an earlier joint news conference with Martin. “Canada is the most European of non-European countries. We are transforming our cooperation with Europe.”
In February, Canada became the first non-European member of the SAFE mechanism, the European Union’s defense procurement initiative. Carney, on this ninth trip to Europe since becoming prime minister 15 months ago, noted Canada 56 partnerships in the critical minerals sector across more than 10 countries, primarily in Europe.
Trade tensions continue to simmer between Canada and the U.S. There is a scheduled July 1 review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) the latest iteration of the North American free-trade pact that has intertwined the economies of the three countries since the early 1990s. Trump said this week that he may not renew the deal. https://fortune.com/2026/06/13/canadian-prime-minister-mark-carney-new-world-order-european-union-us-vs-middle-powers/
Ahead of G7, Carney says no one country will characterize new world order
June 14, 2026
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday.
“What one can’t do at this point in a rapidly shifting world order is to rely on one set of institutions, one grouping, one country to provide the answers,” he said during a visit to Ireland, ahead of Monday’s G7 meeting in Evian-les-Bains, France.
“You have to know what you want, what you need, how you serve your citizens, and then go out and get it.”
The prime minister said a day earlier the “strands” of a new world order could be woven at that upcoming summit. …
Carney was asked about the move by U.S. President Donald Trump to block use of Anthropic’s latest AI models by foreign nationals. Anthropic said Friday it has taken the models, known as Fable 5 and Mythos 5, offline to comply with the directive.
The prime minister said Canada is in contact with the U.S. and there is a “good flow of information there.”
“There are some risks that they have identified. And I understand the American authorities taking those risks seriously, which is why they’ve taken a step,” Carney said.
Carney said the situation shows there is a need to diversify when it comes to AI models.
“The situation we’re in collectively right now with Mythos and Fable is something that can happen with over-reliance,” Carney said. “Nobody’s done anything wrong in this situation. But we will have done something wrong if we just accept this, don’t take the lesson, don’t build out and diversify.”
Carney told reporters in County Mayo that the standards, regulations and responsibility of AI will be part of discussions at the G7 summit. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/g7-carney-ireland-9.7235087
The Bible tells of the rise of a European new world order in places such as the 13th chapter of the Book of Revelation. I do not believe that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney likely sees the ties here.
That said, Canada is part of the Five Eyes alliance with the USA, Australia, New Zealand, and United Kingdom. The Anthropic restriction to Canada seems against the intent of that alliance.
Yet, Canada, like the Europeans (see Trump Administration’s ‘wake up’ call leading to larger German army and European Union to develop Artificial Intelligence without Anthropic), sees the Anthropic and other moves by the Trump Administration as reasons to be more independent from the USA.
Notice the following:
Trump’s Anthropic shutdown just made the case for non-American AI
Anthropic may bring Fable and Mythos back online, but the shutdown fired up sovereign AI efforts around the world.
At Washington’s request, Anthropic suddenly took its newest and most powerful AI models offline over the weekend. The American company said it had little choice after the White House demanded it block access for all foreign nationals, including its own employees. Abroad, the incident offered a sobering reminder that the US not only dominates frontier AI — its government also wields power over who gets to use it.
The Trump administration’s action was swift, sweeping, and imposed with little warning or explanation. The unprecedented shutdown of the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models — which were already subject to safeguards limiting their use in “high-risk areas” — that followed gave new force to long-running arguments cautioning against relying on the US for critical technologies. It was fresh ammunition for the politicians, governments, and companies already arguing that they need to lead in the technology themselves. …
In France, the reaction was more explicit — and more forceful in naming the US. Former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, the presidential candidate for Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party, called the shutdown the start of “the AI war” and said it shows France’s vulnerability if it relies on others for critical technologies. He likened the pullback of Anthropic’s models to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, with access to AI now a strategic chokepoint for which France must prepare. Attal is far from alone: Le Monde reported similar alarm from across France’s political spectrum.
Trump may see restricting Mythos and Fable as a matter of national security. But the argument cuts both ways, and with Washington now asking if AI is too important for everyone to have access, other governments are asking whether they can afford for Washington to decide who does.
Anthropic may soon bring Mythos and Fable back online. Restoring global trust in American AI is another thing entirely. No matter how long the shutdown lasts, it shined a light on how fragile access to US frontier AI models is. Many governments and companies did not like what they saw — and are fired up to make sure it doesn’t happen again. https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/949986/anthropic-fable-mythos-shutdown-sovereign-ai
The prophet Jeremiah warned:
1 How lonely sits the city
That was full of people!
How like a widow is she,
Who was great among the nations!
The princess among the provinces
Has become a slave!2 She weeps bitterly in the night,
Her tears are on her cheeks;
Among all her lovers
She has none to comfort her.
All her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
They have become her enemies. (Lamentations 1:1-2)
The USA is becoming more and more isolated and the Trump Administration has repeatedly been taking moves that are turning friends into enemies.
This will not turn out well for the USA (Daniel 11:39), the rest of the Five Eyes (cf. Daniel 8:24-25; Jeremiah 30:7), or even the Europeans themselves (Jeremiah 51:27-33).
