LCG: Secret Rapture, 144,000

A shofar made from the horn of a Greater kudu

An animal horn trumpet.

COGwriter

In his commentary today, LCG’s Wyatt Ciesielka wrote the following:

As we approach the end of this age and Christ’s literal return, many Christians wonder what will happen to them.  Many believe in a secret rapture.  Jehovah’s Witnesses claim to be part of the 144,000.  Others wonder about the Great Multitude.  What does the Bible really teach about God’s saints at the end of this age?…

Nowhere does Scripture teach a “secret rapture.”  Christ will not secretly return to spirit away His servants into heaven before the Great Tribulation and the Day of the Lord.  This completely contradicts numerous Scriptures, including Matthew 24:26-31.  Notice 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 – both the dead and those alive will be raised incorruptible at the last trumpet! The “last trumpet” is after the Great Tribulation and the Day of the Lord – not before.

Scripture does reveal a group of 144,000.  Who are they?  Revelation 7:3-4 describes the 144,000 sealed from the physical tribes of Israel.  But, when are they sealed?  First, these physical Israelites endure the Great Tribulation and Satan’s wrath!  They are not counted worthy of God’s protection during the Great Tribulation (v.  14)!  But then, after the Great Tribulation, they are mercifully “sealed” during the Day of the Lord.

Scripture also reveals a “Great Multitude” (Revelation 7:9).  Unlike the 144,000, this “Great Multitude” comes from every nation, every language and every tribe.  But notice that, similar to the 144,000, many of these people also come out of the Great Tribulation.  They complete the martyrdom described in Revelation 6:11.  Just like the 144,000, they did not escape Satan’s wrath.

Must one enter into the Kingdom of God through the Great Tribulation?  Is there another way?

Revelation 3:7-13 describes God’s faithful Church at the end of this age.  These Christians earnestly strive to “imitate Jesus” in how they live and worship (1 Corinthians 11:1).  They are not perfect, but they strive to “walk as He walked” (1 John 2:6).  They practice love, and all the fruits of the Spirit.  And there is something else unique about these Christians.  They are zealous.  They are doing something.

They understand the “key of David” which includes understanding proper godly church government and also what is prophesied for modern Israel (compare Revelation 3:7-8 to Isaiah 22:21-22).  They are not distracted with the cares of this world.  They are not distracted by church politics.  They are focused.

These Christians are zealously doing the work of preaching the gospel (compare the “open door” in Revelation 3:8 with 2 Corinthians 2:12).  Just like Jesus, their “food” is to proclaim the gospel message of the coming Kingdom of God (John 4:34)!  They imitate Christ in this (1 Corinthians 11:1).

These zealous Philadelphian Christians receive God’s protection before the Great Tribulation!  They are also counted worthy to marry Christ and become trusted pillars in His Kingdom (Revelation 3:12).

The end of this age is indeed fast approaching.  Christ will return (John 14:3).  At His return, who and where will we be?

For more on the false, “rapture doctrine” please read:“The secret rapture – False hope for end-time Christians! For a much deeper understanding of the book of Revelation, please read: Revelation: The Mystery Unveiled and watch the Tomorrow’s World telecast, “The Coming Day of the Lord.”

Many misunderstand end time prophecy.  In LCG, we try to show people what the Bible teaches.

UCG’s Dennis Luker vs. Leon Walker

The United Church of God (UCG) posted a letter late yesterday from its president, Dennis Luker where he goes blow-by-blow against Leon Walker’s positions regarding the split in UCG in Latin America.

For those who wish to read it, it is at http://realtimeunited.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/update-on-the-situation-in-latin-america-and-with-leon-walker.pdf

Most readers of the COGwriter page (including me) are not part of UCG, so I have tried to minimize the amount of UCG bickering that I report here.  But since I reported some of Leon Walker’s comments yesterday (see July 31 Journal Out), I felt having UCG’s response linked here would help those interested in this matter.

On other UCG-related matters, someone forwarded me a jpg file titled “fruitless tree”.  Essentially, it shows that UCG has not been particularly successful with its public proclamation efforts.  And, that seems to be correct.

The main reason that I chose not to be part of UCG is that when I learned how it intended to govern itself (which I disagreed with), I told someone at that time (1995) who went with UCG that its governance form meant that UCG would not be effective in proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom to the world as a witness.  That UCG individual disagreed with me over 15 years ago, but sadly I was correct then

Should the Church Still Try to Place its Top Priority on Proclaiming the Gospel or Did Herbert W. Armstrong Change that Priority for the Work? Some say the Church should mainly feed the flock now as that is what Herbert W. Armstrong reportedly said. Is that what he said? Is that what the Bible says? What did Paul and Herbert W. Armstrong expect from evangelists?
The Laodicean Church Era has been predominant circa 1986 A.D. to present. These are non-Philadelphians who mainly descended from the old WCG.

Guttenberg Again Most Popular German Politician

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Karl-Theodor von und zu Guttenberg

Karl-Theodor von und zu Guttenberg

COGwriter

Germany’s Defence Minister Baron von und zu Guttenberg is once again the most popular politician in his country (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-08-06/chancellor-merkel-s-popularity-drops-guttenberg-most-liked-poll-shows.html).

As regular readers of this page are aware, I consider that there is a possibility that Baron Guttenberg could possibly become the leader of the final Beast power and be the final King of the North.

For various reasons, he fits certain biblical, Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox prophecies for titles that seem consistent with those positions.  The fact that he claims Catholicism, yet married a Lutheran who did not convert, is just one of many.   Whoever ends up fulfilling that role will ultimately (not initially) betray the Church of Rome (Revelation 17:16-18).

Now, I do not know Karl Guttenberg personally, nor do I believe he can be the final Antichrist.  And he may not end up having anything to do with this final Beast leader, yet his ability to be so popular is another reason he could possibly fulfill that role.

The Bible warns of a leader who will have schemes (Daniel 8:23-25).  Hence it is likely that this leader will likely appear on the scene as nice and popular politician. Yet, this leader will at some point persecute those that are truly faithful (Daniel 7:24-26).

While it is not yet clear if Karl Guttenberg will be the final King of the North, he remains one to watch.

Ron Weinland, 666, and New “Truths”?

Friday, August 6th, 2010

VS.

COGwriter

For the first time since January 15, 2010, the self-appointed prophet and self-declared one of the two witnesses, Ronald Weinland of Church of God Preparing for the Kingdom (CGPFK) posted something at his ronaldweinland.com website.

Here are some excerpts:

THE FEAST & NEW TRUTHS:

August 5, 2010…

As I am starting to write this post, I think of the date today and its symbolic importance, since this is day 666 to the return of Jesus Christ on Pentecost of 2012. For me personally, this is now a countdown from evil and the evil one…

This year’s Feast is going to be one of the most exciting and fulfilling spiritual Feasts that God has ever inspired! God will establish four additional doctrinal truths that will be given at this Feast. Two of these truths have been referred to only in passing (in the very slightest of terms), but they have not been focused upon and have not yet been taught and established as doctrine in the Church.

The plain truth is the Jesus will not be returning on Pentecost (May 27) in 2012.  666 has nothing to do with this.  But, Ron is apparently trying to be dramatic, as his prophetic success rate is not good.

Nor are his future “new truths” likely to be true (though they will likely contain some truth).  It is my opinion that Ron Weinland has been using this “new truth” stuff to encourage more people to attend his Feast of Tabernacles’ sites.  It is not that I do not believe that Ronald Weinland will claim additional “truths”, only that since he claims to be one of the two witnesses, he probably could have already given public witness about them if these were, in fact, revealed to him by God.

But he will probably come up with some explanation about that.

Anyway, he also wrote in that same post:

God gave the 50th Truth which led us to understanding the correct timing for the return of Jesus Christ. In Worldwide, we had come to believe that Jesus Christ would return on a Feast of Trumpets, however, with the revelation of this truth we came to understand that Christ would return on Pentecost—specifically, Pentecost of 2012.

At the time that this truth was being revealed, I believed that this was the final truth God would give us…

A new era began on Trumpets of 2008, although a short one, which would continue up to the day of Christ’s return as King of kings. It was the beginning of the final countdown of the 1335 days prophesied in Daniel 12.

In this new era of the countdown to Christ’s return…To date, three additional truths have been given in this new era and four more will be given during the Feast of Tabernacles.

Again, if he was one of God’s two witnesses, one would think that he would not keep changing his mind as often as he has.  His comments about getting more “truths” reminds me that PCG’s Gerlad Flurry, another self-appointed prophet, has claimed about his group.

Despite his claims and writings, the Great Tribulation did not begin in 2008 nor is Jesus returning on May 27, 2012.

Ronald Weinland is not God’s prophet or one of His two witnesses.  Eventually, more of his followers will wake up and see this.  Hopefully, they will not wait until after the Feast of Trumpets or the Feast of Tabernacles to do this.

Some articles of related interest may include the following:

Concerns About Ronald Weinland’s Church of God-Preparing for the Kingdom of God Ronald Weinland falsely claims to be one of the two witnesses God is raising up and that the end will come in 2008 (first April 17th, then June 2008, now December 14, 2008). Why does the Bible show that Ron Weinland is a false prophet? He also has at least one other view that suggests that he is not part of the Church of God.
Can the Great Tribulation Begin in 2010, 2011, or 2012? Can the Great Tribulation begin today? What happens before in the “beginning of sorrows”? What happens in the Great Tribulation and the Day of the Lord? When is the earliest that the Great Tribulation can begin? What is the Day of the Lord?
Who Are The Two Witnesses? What is their job? What does the Bible reveal? What has the Church of God taught on this subject? Might even Roman Catholic prophecies give some clues here?

Harold Camping’s Teachings About the End of the World Do Not Agree with the Bible Harold Camping teaches that the rapture will be on May 21, 2011 and the world will end on October 21, 2011. Like Ronald Weinland, he allegorizes too many scriptures.  What does the Bible show?

US Payrolls Fell

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Handwriting on the Wall (Crespo)

COGwriter

The Los Angeles Times reported

The employment picture in the U.S. remained bleak last month as the nation’s payrolls fell for a second straight month, with private-sector businesses adding a disappointingly scant number of new jobs. The jobless rate held steady at 9.5% in July, the government said Friday. (http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-unemployment-report-20100807,0,5736309.story)

Essentially, this means that the economic stimulus plans of the late Bush and then Obama administrations have not produced jobs as hoped.

This suggests that the USA will continue to accumulate more debt at a rapid pace.

Because of the high unemployment rate, combined with debt accumulation, an odd phenomena seems to be happening.  A deflationary economy being propped up by a potentially devastating inflation of the money supply.

Consumers are afraid to spend as much, and this is deflationary.  Governments, the US federal as well as the State of California ones two cite two examples, are spending money that they do not have.  This spending increases debt.  And because the economy has been moving a bit slow, this is allowing for an increase in the money supply, without much increase in the rate of inflation (and there has been deflation in some segments, such as parts of the housing market).

The US Government, as well as the State of California, are increasing debt (pledges to pay) and increasing the amount of dollars in circulation without a corresponding increase in productive output.

This will be disastrous.

Yet, it was predicted in the Bible, over 2600 years ago.  The Bible mentions that this destruction will happen to those that increased their debt at the end times:

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry…5 Indeed, because he transgresses by wine, He is a proud man… 6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases What is not his–how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’? 7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. 8 Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you (Habakkuk 2:3,5,6-8).

The above prophecy will be fulfilled at the time of the end (cf. “The message was true, but the appointed time was long…in the latter days, for the vision refers to many days yet to come”, Daniel 10:1,14). Daniel 8:19, 11:27,29,35 use same the Hebrew term for “appointed time” as Habakkuk 2:3, while Daniel 10, using a different term, ties the latter days to the time in Daniel 8:19.  Habakkuk 2 was not fulfilled in its entirety anciently. Also, it makes little sense that it would be directed towards the modern nation of Israel as it does not have enemy creditors. It must be a nation or group of nations with some prominence at the appointed time of the end.

This problem will cause sudden destruction among those who are spiritually drunk:

3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. (1 Thessalonians 5:3-7)

Notice that both Paul and Habakkuk seem to have tied drunkenness in with this sudden calamity (so did Jesus in Luke 21:34-35). Truly the Anglo-nations are not spiritually sober.

Evangelist Dr. D. Winnail wrote about this suddenness:

Handwriting on the Wall! On July 4, the United States, currently the most powerful nation in the world, celebrated 234 years of independence. The following day, on Monday, July 5, British-born Harvard professor and economic historian Niall Ferguson opened the 2010 Aspen Ideas Festival with a stark warning that the American “empire” could suddenly collapse—possibly within the next two years—due to the country’s rising debt! (Winnail W. July 31 Journal Out

Friday, August 6th, 2010

COGwriter

The latest issue (print date July 31, 2010) of The Journal just came out.

Much of it is devoted to the various current and past crises that the United Church of God has faced.  For example, one of the headlines on the front page is “UCG’s crisis is the latest in a long line of ups and downs since the church’s founding in 1995”.   The basic news related to this has already been covered at COGwriter, though as always, Dixon Cartwright has his own insights.  As far as UCG’s Council of Elder’s is concerned, there was a subheadline describing the members of it as follows, “Current ratio of council progressives to conservatives is 8-4”.

The front page also mentioned, related to UCG, “The administration team consists of the president, the directors of ministry and media, and the treasurer. Heading up ministerial services is interim director Victor Kubik, replacing Jim Franks. The new treasurer, Mr. Dean, replaces Jason Lovelady. Peter Eddington replaces Larry Salyer as interim director of media services.”

Reginald Killingley had an article titled “Is the UCG becoming the Untied Church of God?”  UCG has long had a problem being “united” and has had many groups un-tie themselves from it.  Though its current Latin American crisis is one of the largest, if not the largest, since its first president, David Hulme, left and formed COGaIC in 1998.

One interesting piece of information was in the Letters to the Editor section, someone asked about the relationship of Abigail Cartwright to Dixon Carwright.  The response was “As far as THE JOURNAL knows, the publisher is not related to Ms. Cartwright. See her updated contact information on her blog at ucgcurrentcrisis.webs.com.”  Abigail Cartwright has been posting information about the UCG crisis and became a founder and board member of International Ambassador Outreach (IAO), as I posted here previously (see UCG, Aaron Dean, and IAO).

Regarding Leon Walker (UCG’s former head of the Spanish and Latin American areas), The Journal had the following:

Days before this issue of THE JOURNAL was to go to press, this newspaper asked Mr. Walker for an interview about his evolving ministry and his relationship with the UCG branches including the UCGIA. He politely declined to discuss his situation with THE JOURNAL.

Based on writings attributed to Mr. Walker that have appeared at ucgcurrentcrisis. web.com and other blogs and Web sites, here is a synopsis of THE JOURNAL’s conclusions about Mr. Walter’s status:

From the UCGIA’s point of view Mr. Walker is guilty of insubordination because he defied a direct order.  The order was for him to return to the UCGIA’s headquarters in Milford, Ohio, during a trip he had undertaken  to visit some of the brethren in Latin America. As a result, at some point in the days after his refusal to cut short his visit to Latin America, the council of
elders terminated his employment and revoked his UCGIA-elder credentials.

Complicated relationship
Mr. Walker’s view of his relationship with the UCG entities is more complicated than a simple employer employee arrangement.  Mr. Walker traces his employment
status back to 1979, when, as an elder in the Worldwide Church of God, WCG founder Herbert Armstrong commissioned him to direct that church’s evangelism and feeding-the flock efforts in Spanish-speaking areas of the world. As a result of that defining moment in his life, Mr. Walker looks at his situation as a calling higher than simply his status as a UCGIA employee. He
therefore concludes he has not committed the sin of insubordination because his affiliation with the United Church of God is only incidental…

Third person
Here are excerpts from a statement Mr. Walker wrote about himself (in the third person):

“Part of the administrative structure of the nations which comprise the Spanish Region is the position of regional director. “This individual, Leon Walker, was first appointed by Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong in November, 1979. When the Spanish Region joined the United Church of God (UCG) in July, 1995, Leon Walker came into UCG as director of the Spanish Region. “He was not appointed by the president nor by the Council of Elders, nor was approval sought from them for that position. Furthermore, Leon Walker was not employed by UCG in July, 1995. He was not employed nor received any salary until January, 1996.” Further, he wrote, he directed the “Spanish Region” “without ever being supervised by any [UCGIA] president or by the Council of Elders.”

I will not add my opinions nor comments to the above.  I provided the above for information and others, if interested, can check out more details and/or draw conclusions for themselves.

Noel Rudd had comments on science and intelligent design.  Those interested in the origin of life, science, and/or God may wish to read the following articles:

Is God’s Existence Logical? Some say it is not logical to believe in God. Is that true?

Where Did God Come From? Any ideas? And how has God been able to exist? Who is God?

What is the Meaning of Life? Who does God say is happy? What is your ultimate destiny? Do you really know? Does God actually have a plan for YOU personally?

CEM’s Ron Dart had an odd article titled “Disillusionment is required for salvation”.

There was actually an article in the July 31, 2010 issue of The Journal that tried to argue that sex outside of marriage was not wrong according to the Bible.  One of the problems I have with The Journal is that it will often print blatant heresy, as well as the fact that it sometimes knowingly publishes inaccurate information (and I have discussed this with the editor in the past).  The Journal also (pretty much every issue) publishes blatantly heretical paid advertisements.  While there are some “gray areas”, there is also black and white, and sometimes The Journal crosses the moral line as far as I am concerned.

UCG: 3 Tips on Self-Control, and Calls a Fast

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

COGwriter

UCG sent the following today in an email:

3 Bible Tips: Self-Control

1. Lack of self-control will be a sign of the end time.

“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good” (2 Timothy 3:1-3, italics added throughout).

2. Godly self-control comes through the Holy Spirit and is necessary to overcome the works of the flesh described in Galatians 5:19-21.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).

3. Godly self-control requires making no provisions for the flesh—not allowing backup plans or harboring thoughts that could sprout into sins.

“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts” (Romans 13:14).

The above is correct and Christians need to understand that self-control is important.

Furthermore, I would add that the Apostle Paul taught that self-control was important to a governor named Felix, who decided not to listen:

25 Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, “Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you.” (Acts 24:25)

But we all need to listen to what the Bible says.  Including about matters like self-control.  And then the Apostle Peter said to add perseverance to that:

5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.  (2 Peter 1:5-7)

This would seem to be for all Christians for all times.  And, it is especially needed in these end times.

UCG, however, has other issues it is dealing with.  Its president, Dennis Luker, sent out the following yesterday, but that seemed to be posted today:

Ministers and brethren, the Council of Elders would like nothing more than to see sincere reconciliation. None of us wanted to see what happened in Latin America happen. We grieve for the members there who have been subjected to spiritual and emotional buffeting—in some cases for years. It is not pretty, and only the divine gift of love from God can truly heal this breach. Tempers have flared and accusations have been hurled by many people within our fellowship…

What is wrong is when the organizers, by clever and manipulative wording, imply and lead others to believe that the Council of Elders and administration lack the desire and have made no effort toward that goal. In fact the opposite is true. The former senior administrator in Latin America was asked at least twice to meet with members of the Council of Elders and Church administrators. In addition, other direct communication is ongoing with several ministers in the region. While the appeal posted on this formerly secret Web site is addressed to the full Council of Elders, we—Dennis Luker as president of the Church, and Melvin Rhodes, chairman of the Council of Elders—want to address these issues now. The full Council of Elders will meet later in August, and a formal response may come at that time.

Ministers and brethren, let’s be clear here. We want nothing more than true unity and reconciliation! We don’t doubt for a minute that the great majority of those who have agreed to add their names to the online appeal for reconciliation are sincere. Certainly we all want reconciliation!

But when we see among the signers the names of a number who have made and distributed unfounded attacks and accusations against the Council, some who have publicly and privately slandered Council members to their congregations and to other elders, some who have tried to organize efforts to recall certain Council members whom they accuse of “unethical” behavior (for which they have offered zero evidence), and some who are actively supporting a developing breakaway organization designed to draw members from the United Church of God—we clearly doubt their stated lofty intentions. (The fact that these words may come as an unpleasant shock to many of you reading this represents evidence that we have chosen not to respond to their actions in kind. The fact remains that we have tried to be patient in the hope that those who slander and speak falsely will repent.)

Let’s call a spade a spade. In the outside world, forums of this nature are rightly called a political caucus. The purpose of a political caucus is two-fold: Marshal resources to achieve a specific political goal, and draw in as many as possible to support that goal. To the organizers of that Web site we say this: Is your purpose to reconcile, or is your purpose to divide and conquer? To be sure, God will be your Judge!

To you well-meaning ministers who have been drawn in by this seemingly well-intentioned effort—and again, we fully respect and share your desire for true unity and reconciliation—do you know what you are doing? Do you realize that by participating you are unknowingly aiding efforts to undermine the very governmental structure that we all, before God, agreed to some 15 years ago?

Ministers and brethren, please be assured that this is as hard to write as we’re sure it is to read. Ministers are called by God to be peacemakers, to teach, to guide, to shepherd and most importantly to serve.

We would like nothing more than to reconcile with as many ministers and members in Latin America as possible—those who want to be with us. We have had several sound, spiritually mature, Spanish-speaking men traveling in Latin America for weeks now. Those men have been meeting with any and all who are willing. Yet they have been rejected with hostility by some who out of the other side of their mouth “seek” reconciliation. Those sent by the administration, with support from the Council, have been helping members and elders who want to remain part of the United Church of God to meet safely for Sabbath services, free of politics and heavy-handed rule. We have been working with them to set up Feast sites where they can meet and celebrate with us the wonderful promise of Jesus Christ’s coming reign on earth. We have continued to financially support those who want to be part of us. They have not been cut off.

Meanwhile, the former UCG administrator of the Latin American region claims that he was independent all along, that he does not recognize any spiritual or managerial authority from the president, the home office or the Council, and has openly compared our ministers to Satan, who “appears as an angel of light.” Some ministers who now follow him have used far worse language in describing loyal ministers and members of the Council of Elders…

To seek this divine and powerful healing, in our individual roles we are joining together to call a fast for the Church for the weekend of August 21-22. Some of you may choose to fast on the Sabbath and others may choose to fast on the following day. Either way please set aside that weekend for intensive prayer, meditation and focused Bible study. Please ask God to give us all a spirit of humility, repentance and unity. Please renew the very prayer of Christ on the night before His crucifixion, when He prayed for protection for all of us and asked God His Father that “You should keep them from the evil one” (John 17:15).

Let us truly forgive. Let us truly seek reconciliation. Let us abandon all efforts to divide—whether online or elsewhere—and draw together to accomplish the work that we have been given to do.

Whether self-control would have resolved this matters may be debated, but according to one UCG insider I spoke with a while back, it seemed like it would have.  UCG is not that into calling fasts, so this is somewhat out of the ordinary (especially with the Day of Atonement coming just a few weeks later).

As far as “calling a spade a spade”, UCG’s form of governance is certainly prone to “playing politics” and having “political caucuses”.  This would seem likely to continue if UCG continues with its presbyterian form of governance.  Which, they seem to prefer.  At least those still with it.

Russia Halts Grain Exports

Russia announced today that it is going to temporarily halt exports of grain:

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told a government meeting on Thursday that a temporary ban on grain exports was needed, with a spokesman later saying this would come into force from August 15 and would apply to contracts that had been already signed. (http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6742QQ20100805)

This is significant for several reasons.

The first is that this move helped push wheat prices to a new high.  And as I reported earlier this week, wheat prices have already risen 50% since late June 2010 (see Wheat Prices Up 50%).  Food shortages can lead to massive, massive inflation.  So much so, the Bible seems to warn of a time that even gold will be worthless as it cannot be eaten (cf. Ezekiel 7:19).

The second is that this is in response to a drought in Russia, which I warned about last month (Drought: Less Wheat in Russia, Europe, Australia, China, and Argentina).

The third is that Russia will, according to the above report, not honor contracts that had been already signed.  Countries value food and their own self-interest.  And Russia is not unique in this area, two years ago some Asian nations did the same thing related to rice.  And even some American stores restricted rice purchases then (see Rice and the Beginning of Sorrows).

The fourth is that this should warn Americans that once there are food shortages here that they will likely NOT be able to count on getting massive imports of food.  Jesus clearly warned of coming famines, and those prior to the Great Tribulation (Matthew 24:7-8,21).

And fifth, many have overlooked how dangerous the debt of the Anglo-descended nations really is.  In times of food shortages, inflated currencies buy little, if any, imported food.  Almost by definition, high debt means an inflated money supply.  If the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and/or New Zealand are hit with significant weather, pestilences, or other massive issues with their own food supplies, they will be subject to starvation.  And while we are not there yet, we possibly could be in a year or so.

Russia’s stopping of grain exports should be a wake-up call for those who do not believe that things can change dramatically for the worse.

In addition to individual repentance, the presiding evangelist of the Living Church of God (LCG), R.C. Meredith of the Living Church of God publicly has taught:

Put aside some food and store some water…Bad times are coming, have some supplies (Meredith RC. Prophecy Overview. Sermon, July 19, 2008).

Get extra food, dried food, and water…When these things happen, maybe God’s people can survive longer…It’s good to be prudent (Meredith RC. Do you actually live by faith? Sermon, April 25, 2009).

Tougher times are coming.

The Great Indian Garbage Patch?

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

COGwriter

A reader sent me the following about an ocean “garbage patch” which has apparently been discovered in the Indian Ocean:

Lori Bongiorno Tue Aug 3, 6:58 pm ET

Scientists previously mapped huge floating trash patches in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, but now a husband-wife team researching plastic garbage in the Indian Ocean suggest a new and dire view. “The world’s oceans are covered with a thin plastic soup,” says Anna Cummins, cofounder of 5 Gyres Institute. Cummins and her husband, Marcus Eriksen, established the 5 Gyres Institute to research plastic pollution in the world’s oceans.

Essentially, the 5 Gyres Institute believes that there are five major areas in the oceans that have more plastic and trash than other areas, that plastic and other trash is ending up in the oceans, and that this trash also ends up on the shores throughout the world.

Last year, LCG reported about the one in the Pacific Ocean:

Irresponsible Stewardship. The South Gyre is an area of the Pacific Ocean 1,000 miles (1600 km) off the coast of California where oceanic currents and winds converge and deposit surface materials. This is also the location of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch—a “sprawling mass of garbage-littered water… where most of the plastic looks like snowy confetti against the deep blue of the north Pacific Ocean.” Researchers are unsure of the exact impact on ocean life, but some estimate that plastic rubbish is responsible for the death of at least 100,000 sea creatures annually. Thankfully, plastics are biodegradable. However, in breaking down, they give off toxins to the surrounding environment (AP, August 28, 2009). When God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden, He charged them with being responsible stewards of His creation—to tend and keep the garden (Genesis 2:15). Human beings have failed in this responsibility and hence the whole creation is groaning for a time when it will be delivered from this bondage to human sins (Romans 8:19-22). We need to be concerned and cry out on behalf of humanity and creation, “…Even so, come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20).

The Bible warns:

18 The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come,
And the time of the dead, that they should be judged,
And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints,
And those who fear Your name, small and great,
And should destroy those who destroy the earth (Revelation 11:18).

We are to be responsible stewards.

Homosexual Marriage Ban Again Deemed Unconstitutional

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

COGwriter

A federal judge ruled that California’s ban on homosexual marriage was “unconstitutional” today (see Federal judge strikes down California’s ban on same-sex marriage).

Last month, a US judge ruled that the 1996 “Defense of Marriage act” was “unconstitutional” (see Gay Marriage Ban Declared Unconstitutional).

While God is clear about His views about “gay relationships”, US judges have taken a different position lately.

As far as being “unconstitutional”, I will simply mention that when most states were admitted in to the USA, none allowed “same-sex marriage”.  Hence the idea of their banning being “unconstitutional” is certainly a 21st century concept–not one originally embraced in the US Constitution.

The Prophet Isaiah wrote:

20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil (Isaiah 5:20)

We live in perilous times (2 Timothy 3:1-9).
