China and India Agree to Military Pact: A Prelude to the 200 Million Man Army of Revelation?

Sunday, January 6th, 2008

COGwriter

In its latest update, LCG reported:

China and India: More Military Cooperation. Last week, the world’s two most populous nations conducted a joint military exercise in the name of “anti-terrorism.” Both nations have been working toward mutually beneficial ends since 2006. The Chinese foreign minister commented that “the military training was intended to enhance mutual understanding and trust and strengthen bilateral exchanges in the field of anti-terrorism, deter the ‘three evil forces’ of terrorism, separatism and extremism, and promote the development of the bilateral strategic partnership.” Chinese and Indian officials plan to continue military activities to bring the two nations closer (ChinaView.cn, December 25, 2007). Joint military exercises between these two nations are important, given a couple of different factors. First, the combined population of these nations is about 2.5 billion—nearly 40 percent of the entire population of the earth. Second, prophetically, God tells of a time, just prior to the return of Christ, when a 200 million-man army will descend on Jerusalem from the east, and destroy an entire third of mankind (Daniel 11:44-45; Revelation 9:13-21). As we consider a joint military force of India and China, it would be very easy for these two nations to field a joint army of 200 million men. The final configuration of the armies from the east is likely yet to be established, but it is also likely that we are seeing the foundations of such a confederation being laid right now.

The 200,000,000 man army is mentioned in the Bible:

13 Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind. Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them (Revelation 9:13-15).

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 15 Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” 16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon (Revelation 16:12-16).

Thus, even the two largest “kings of the East” are setting the stage to fulfill end-time biblical prophecies.

Anti-PCG Fast Called for Today

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

A winter scene seems to fit a request for a winter fast.

The following is from an email I received this morning:

Many of those receiving this letter already know about the Philadelphia Church of God (PCG), which is being ministered by a man named Gerald Flurry.

On December 10, 2005, Mr. Flurry decreed that his church members should entirely shun anyone — including even their own closest family members — who had previously been disfellowshiped from “the Church” and/or judged as “marked”, by a PCG church leader of appropriate authority and ranking — basically, to shun all those who are deemed sinners by the PCG’s own judgment!

Mr. Flurry’s mandate can be found here:    https://www.cogwriter.com/PCGNon-contactPolicy-PGRDecember2005.pdf.pdf

…Therefore, we have decided to hold a special Christian COG “Philadelphia Fast” on Jan 5, the first Sabbath of 2008.

In this fast we pray in the name of Christ, that the Father will intervene in order to touch the hearts and minds of Gerald Flurry along with his PCG leadership and members unto repentance and healing…

With love and in Christ YHWH,

— Concerned Family of Christ

While I do disagree with PCG’s policy (and have posted about it on this page before–see PCG: Non-Contact Policy & Gerald Flurry Marking) and some of the beliefs of those advocating this fast (they misunderstand Church Eras and other matters, and thus because of that do not seem to properly understand God’s work today), a fast is something people who are able, certainly can do (I also posted about this fast in November, please see An “Independent” Fast for Members in the Phildelphia Church of God).

Living Church of God Reports on 2007

Friday, January 4th, 2008

In an email last night, LCG announced:

Living Church of God Year in Review 2007: Visit the website to see our Most Read Booklet Online, Most Watched Telecasts Online, Most Linked to Article, Most Read Article Online, Most Watched Sermon Online and Most Popular Commentary for 2007. Included will be updates on the Internet and Television Departments and photos from the 15th Anniversary Celebrations in Charlotte, and Port Dickson, Malaysia. Click here to read more.

Some of the information included:

Internet Department: Looking Back On 2007

In many ways, 2007 was a record year for reach and response through our various websites. Our primary US websites were visited 1,763,015 times in 2007. Those visitors downloaded a total of 9,727,286 pages, not counting telecasts, sermons, and booklets from these websites. Over the past year we have averaged 80,488 unique visitors per month. In June we reached a major milestone with Google – over 1,000,000 visitors to our site as a direct result of our AdWords campaigns. It took 5 years and 4 days to reach this milestone with Google. God has greatly blessed our efforts on the Internet and as He continues to open doors and guide us forward, our reach and impact will continue to grow.

– J. Charles Ogwyn

Television Department: Milestone Reached

We are happy to report that this past week’s response pushed our annual worldwide TV total over 200,000. This is the first time for the Tomorrow’s World television program to generate 200,000 responses in a year’s time. To add a little perspective to this, it took the Work’s first four years and three months to bring in the first 200,000 responses! The television program’s worldwide response has grown at an average annual rate of 22 percent per year over the past eight years. We thank God and Jesus Christ for this tremendous growth. It is a great way to end the calendar year of 2007.

– Wayne Pyle

It is great that LCG is averaging 4,000 responses from its telecast now, each week.  I would also like to mention:

As of 11/09/07, our member files now show more than 2,600 baptisms from all sources in our U.S. and international Living Church of God congregations since January 1999 (Pyle W. Telephone update with Dr. Thiel. November 20, 2007).

LCG probably has the highest percentage of people baptized in the past 9 years of any COG. And the highest number of people baptized who did not have a prior COG background.

CGOM-UK: COG Beliefs Are In The Bible

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

In his Jan-Feb 2008 newsletter, CGOM-UK’s James McBride wrote:

I still believe the basics of what I was taught because I have since put it to more intense scrutiny.

Sound Bible teaching has largely fallen by the wayside. But tell me, from the Christian Scriptures, if you can dispute the following teachings.  (My Methodist Sunday-school teachers certainly didn’t, for most points, convince me otherwise.)

…Jesus Christ died and was resurrected – for me
…Jesus will return to reign over all mankind for a thousand years or so
…the Christian ‘sabbath’ is not Sunday but the seventh day – Saturday
…Jesus did not ‘do away’ with his Father’s Law
…I won’t go to heaven when I die – nor will anyone else
… …[hades] is not a place of eternal torment but simply everyone’s final resting place
…the soul has no pre-existence nor does it survive death
…everyone will be resurrected at some time, for judgment
…the Christian Scriptures know no other divinely- sanctioned ‘holy days’ than those  in Leviticus 23
…Jesus said he would build a church – and records show it existed since founded early in the first century, however now deviant from his teachings

I repeat – show me evidence that these beliefs are not Scriptural. They are the basics, though experience and study has somewhat modified my understanding.

While I would have worded those a bit differently, the fact is that the COGs do rely more on the Bible than other groups that try to pass themselves off as Christian (for specific group, please see articles on various Christian-professing churches as the COGwriter home page).

Here are articles related to most of the topics he brought up:

Passover and the Early Church Did the early Christians observe Passover? What did Jesus and Paul teach?  Why did Jesus have to die for you?
Did The Early Church Teach Millenarianism and a 6000 Year Plan? Was a 6,000 year time allowed for humans to rule followed by a literal thousand year reign of Christ on Earth (often called the millennium) taught by the early Christians? Is this time near?
Sunday and Christianity Was Sunday observed by the apostolic and true post-apostolic Christians? How clearly endorsed Sunday?
The Sabbath in the Early Church and Abroad Was the seventh-day (Saturday) Sabbath observed by the apostolic and post-apostolic Church?
What Did Jesus Teach About the Ten Commandments? This article quotes what Jesus actually said about them (His words are in red).
What Did Early Christians Understand About the Resurrection? Is there more than one future resurrection?
Universal Salvation? There Are Hundreds of Verses in the Bible Supporting the Doctrine of True Apocatastasis Do you believe what the Bible actually teaches on this? Will all good things be restored? Does God’s plan of salvation take rebellion and spiritual blindness into account? Is there eternal torment?
Did Early Christians Believe that Humans Possessed Immortality? What does John 3:16, and other writings, tell us?
Hope of Salvation: How the COGs differ from most Protestants How the COGs differ from mainstream Protestants, is perhaps the question I am asked most by those without a COG background.
Is There “An Annual Worship Calendar” In the Bible? This paper provides a biblical and historical critique of several articles, including one by WCG which states that this should be a local decision. What do the Holy Days mean? Also you can click here for the calendar of Holy Days.
Location of the Early Church: Another Look at Ephesus, Smyrna, and Rome What actually happened to the primitive Church? And did the Bible tell about this in advance?
Church of God Outreach Ministries This was a CGI spin-off who says it is not a church.
The History of Early Christianity Are you aware that what most people believe is not what truly happened to the true Christian church? Do you know where the early church was based? Do you know what were the doctrines of the early church?

Russia Says Telling Truth About One Aspect of Christmas Hurts Parents and Teachers

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

The Slovenian version of Santa, Ded Moroz or Father Frost

The Slovenian version of Santa, Ded Moroz or Father Frost

The following BBC story was of interest:

The Russian government has banned a television advertisement for denying the existence of Father Christmas.

The ad for Eto electrical stores stated Father Frost, Russia’s version of Father Christmas, did not exist.

The Federal anti-Monopoly Service said the ad had broken rules for advertisers not to discredit parents and teachers.

It said that declaring that Father Frost did not exist implied that parents were not telling the truth, so undermining childrens’ trust in them.

The ad “induces negative relations between children and parents”, Andrei Kashevarov, the service’s deputy director, told Rossiiskaya Gazeta.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7161468.stm

So apparently it is worse that children realize the truth than to encourage others to lie to them?

The Bible warns that many simply do not have a love of the truth (2 Thes 2:10).  Now the situation is just as bad (if not worse) in Western nations, but that still does not excuse what Russia did (a little bit of information on the Russian Orthodox can be found in the article Some Similarities and Differences Between the Orthodox Church and the Churches of God ).

But the truth is that paganism, such as Christmas, is based upon lies, misinformation, and twisted intentions.

Interestingly, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox saint, John Chrysostom taught:

The festivals of the pitiful and miserable Jews are soon to march upon us one after the other and in quick succession: the feast of Trumpets, the feast of Tabernacles, the fasts. There are many in our ranks who say they think as we do…

If the Jewish ceremonies are venerable and great, ours are lies…..(John Chrysostom. Homily I Against the Jews I:5;VI:5. Preached at Antioch, Syria in the Fall of 387 AD).

Yet the New Testament calls one of the so-called “Jewish” holy days “great”:

On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out (John 7:37).

So who is right?

The antisemitic John Chrystostum and those who want to perpetuate lies like Santa/Father Frost or Jesus and those who follow His practices?

The Bible also teaches:

…they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness (2 Thess 2:12).

We in the Churches of God follow Jesus and the truths of the Bible over lies.  Will you?

Four articles of possibly related interest may include:

What Does the Catholic Church Teach About Christmas and the Holy Days? Do you know what the Catholic Church says were the original Christian holy days? Was Christmas among them?
Is There “An Annual Worship Calendar” In the Bible? This paper provides a biblical and historical critique of several articles, including one by WCG which states that this should be a local decision. What do the Holy Days mean? Also you can click here for the calendar of Holy Days.
The History of Early Christianity Are you aware that what most people believe is not what truly happened to the true Christian church? Do you know where the early church was based? Do you know what were the doctrines of the early church? Is your faith based upon lies and compromise?
The Similarities and Dissimilarities between Martin Luther and Herbert W. Armstrong This article clearly shows some of the doctrinal differences between in the two. At this time of doctrinal variety and a tendency by many to accept certain aspects of Protestantism, the article should help clarify why the COG is NOT Protestant.   Do you really know what Martin Luther taught?

The COGs & the Internet in 2007 & 2008

The Above Map Show the Number of Internet Users By Country

COGwriter

The world is a big place, yet with the internet, much of it can be reached.  Most of the COGs have some type of internet presence. Some, like the COGwriter site, reach the vast majority of the countries/territories of the world each year based upon independently tallied statistics.

In 2007, the COGwriter site had double the amount of unique visitors, double the amount of page views, and several times the number of “hits” compared to 2006.  This increase is probably due to the ever increasing content at this site (though the increase in “hits”is mainly due to switching this news page to Word Press in June 2007 and adding pictures with most posts).  The site also added a news feature that updates with additional world news items every ten minutes in 2007.

The top two dozen nations/regions who visited the COGwriter site in 2007 were recorded as follows:

  1. United States of America
  2. Canada
  3. Australia
  4. European Union
  5. Great Britain
  6. South Africa
  7. Netherlands
  8. China
  9. Hong Kong
  10. Sweden
  11. New Zealand
  12. Norway
  13. Iceland
  14. Singapore
  15. Germany
  16. Philippines
  17. Malaysia
  18. France
  19. India
  20. Jamaica
  21. Switzerland
  22. Russian Federation
  23. Greece
  24. Japan

One of my personal objectives was to increase responses in 2007 from throughout Asia including Russia, ChinaIndia, Japan, and that did happen–though I pray regularly that more will be reached there.

With the United Arab Emirates coming in at number 27, and Tunisia at number 127, and many others in-between, it appears that the reach to North Africa and the Middle East is increasing.

I am hoping for better results from the rest of Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America in 2008, though the COGwriter site probably encouraged more people in those areas to actually support LCG in 2007 than the other listed Gentile areas.  (In 2006, my focus was more on the Islands of the world as well as Europe.)

As more developments occur in Europe, I suspect additional information at the COGwriter site will be read by more in that region.

What about the other Church Of God websites sites?

The Living Church of God reported that it had record amounts of unique visitors to its official websites (Tomorrow’s World, LCG) in 2007.  It also got a record television number of television responses.

The United Church of God got excellent results in 2007.  From what I can tell, it probably record results for 2-3 of its official sites.

COGaIC’s  main public site is its Vision website, which seems to be up some. COGaIC added a blog on early Christianity in 2007 to its public site (those interested in more information may also wish to visit the The History of Early Christianity page). (In early 2006 Church of God an International Community (COGaIC) effectively reduced access to its information online similar to the practices of PCG and now RCG–thus its “Church of God News” is no longer as public as it once was–it also changed the format of its other page in December 2007.)

The Philadelphia Church of God appears to have done well internet-wise in 2007 with its Trumpet website (which now has more world news than before), and it expanded one website related to S. Flurry’s Raising the Ruins book.

The Restored Church of God reported a record amount of hits to its websites in 2007.  David Pack made an unusual appeal to supporters in November 2007 to liquidate assets and send them to him as he has “big” plans, including upgrading his websites in 2008 (see also David Pack of the Restored Church of God Declares: “Go get those assets and get them here”).

The unitarian CCG, which I am not convinced is a COG, seems to have received many internet responses in 2007.

Church of the Great God received excellent internet interest as its internet responses seem to be up in 2007.

Church of God International had its website offline the latter portion of 2007 as it is intending a relaunch.  But it still received internet interest.  (It still was not up when I checked this morning).

CG21’s site still lists as “New” items from 2005 and earlier, as this site does not appear to have received much in the way of updates (nor outsdie interest) in the past year or so (most likely because of Raymond McNair’s health condition).

The Enduring Church of God, contrary to its previous claims about a website, did not even have a functional public website until December 30, in 2007-but at least it finally got one (see GCG news page).

Legacy Institute‘s site was offline briefly in 2007.  Legacy’s site still tends to be behind, however, in posting its own news–but of course, the internet is not really much of Legacy’s focus.

Christian Education Ministries primary website seems to have had a similar year as it did in 2006.  A December 16, 2007, quantcast.com reports showed that BornToWin.net’s monthly unique visitors  from the United States (“U.S. Reach: 9,250”) was almost as high as COGwriter (“U.S. Reach: 12,096”).

Christian Bibical Church of God’s  primary website seems to have had a similar year as it did in 2006.

The two main HWA materials sites seem to have done well in 2007 and both seemed to improve the quality of some their materials.

Speaking of sites related to those who have died within the past 22 years, ICG’s GTA site as well as the G&S site of the late R. Nickels also seemed to do well in 2007.

Church of God (Seventh Day) did not seem to have much going on with its websites in 2007.  Independent rankings (on 12/16/07) indicate that it has not made effective use of the internet for a group of its size (“U.S. Reach 5,537”).

According to the two independent places I checked, The Journal did not seem to do as well in 2007 as I recall from 2006.  However, a later report from it states that its visits were up 51% from 2006.

Regarding the anti-COG sites in 2007, Gary Scott decided he should spend more time with his family and stopped posting at his xCG blog.  Gavin Rumney tried to fill in by posting more on his Ambassador Watch site, but seems to have had a higher percentage of non-COG related items than in prior years and his relative rankings are lower than they were a couple of years ago.

Perhaps it should be mentioned that there are a lot of small and independent COG groups who believe that their websites are how they are effectively proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom to the world as a witness.  However, they tend to be ineffective according reports I have seen (Church of God In Peace and Truth is one that comes to mind).

However, there are two notable exceptions to the really small groups getting few responses.

The first is Barnabas Ministries which reported that its number of visitors set a record for 2007.  The website is somewhat of a collection of articles by those who consider themselves “independent” of “corporate churches” (an article of related interest may include Independent Members of the COG: Herbert W. Armstrong Comments, Plus Questions and Answers).

And the second is that one of Ron Weinland’s (of CGPFK) sites did very well due to the subject matter and advertising–Ron Weinland incorrectly claims to be one of the two witnesses and that the Great Tribulation will begin in 2008.  The COGwriter article Concerns About Ronald Weinland’s Church of God-Preparing for the Kingdom of God has been receiving over 100 page views per day–hence many people are concerned that the end could come in 2008, but it will not (please see the news item At Least Two Wrongly Claim Great Tribulation Will Begin in 2008).

Notice that Ronald Weinland claims:

This phase of the Fifth Thunder is one of my own choosing, which God has granted me as part of His own will and purpose for the Church (2008 – God’s Final Witness, p. 92).

I suspect that Ron Weinland may later claim to have the power to change the date of “the end”, that by the end of 2008 (and perhaps he will announce that no later than the Feast of Tabernacles) he will .  Otherwise, shortly thereafter, “the end” of his current internet impact will thus probably come for him and his group.  Now, of course, I do not believe that Ron Weinland is actually in the Church of God any more, hence hope that he will not discourage people who he misleads from looking in to the biblical truths that the Church of God promotes (an article of related interest may be Why Be Concerned About False and Heretical Leaders?).

Those interested in the Church of God, may wish to read the article There are Many COGs: Why Support the Living Church of God?  It not only mentions some COG differences, it has a summary of what the COGs are all about.
