Living Church of God Evangelist Richard Ames with a “Telly” Award for “Tomorrow’s World”

COGwriter

On Friday night, ICG’s Mark Armstrong reported the following in his weekly update:

The Garner Ted Armstrong telecast has generated over 20,000 direct responses this year, and roughly 50% were first time contacts.

ICG seems to be the 2nd most effective COG when it comes to television.

In yesterday’s and the prior Sabbath weekly updates, LCG reported:

Spanish Radio Program Received Awards
The religious radio station “Vida Internacional”—locatedin Bahia Blanca, Argentina—held its 15th anniversary dinner celebration on December 10. During the event, our Spanish radio program El Mundo de Mañana was given an award for its outstanding work in “Christian satellite communications.” Mr. Walter Troncoso, the station’s owner, also announced during the event that gold medals would be presented to the programs with the highest ratings. A survey had been conducted by the telephone company “Telecom” from December 7-10.  Vida Internacional airs 60 different programs. To our surprise and joy, El Mundo de Mañana obtained the number one rating by the audience.  Mr. Aaron Bravo, our deacon in Bahia Blanca, had received the awards and thanked God and Mr. Troncoso for the blessing of preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God.

The circulation of the Tomorrow’s World magazine has passed the 400,000-mark. The January-February 2009 print run will be 418,000. Now we are on our way to the half-a-million-subscribers milestone!
—————————————————————–

So LCG just got an award for the popularity of its Spanish radio program and keeps increasing its magazine circulation.  Perhaps I should add here that I believe that LCG has received between 200,000-300,000 responses to its telecast in 2008.  LCG has the highest television reach of any COG.

In the latest United News (which arrived here yesterday), UCG’s Larry Salyer reported :

Some have looked at projected circulation figures for The Good News and wondered why we have set the goal so low. Actually, the number in the Operation Plan is not a goal but an anticipated result of necessary pruning of nonreaders. We have launched an annual renewal (we have been doing renewals every two years) to purge our list of people who are no longer interested in receiving The Good News. This is according to plan and intended to cut waste in order to reach a bigger audience with the gospel of the Kingdom of God.

For years we have measured the success of our proclamation efforts primarily by the number of subscribers to our flagship magazine. Many of us have been in the Church a long time and are familiar with the process. Perhaps we first heard the truth on daily radio broadcasts. Then came the new, exciting marvel of television…

Because these tools were used to build the Church rapidly for several decades, some think these are still the best ways to preach the gospel to the world. These means may be effective in some countries for years to come, but in most countries they will soon be eclipsed by other systems such as the Internet combined with television and mobile devices…

Today we still use magazines, booklets, radio and television, but we are moving most aggressively
into the Internet.

UCG is probably third most effective with television.  And apparently it intends to focus more on less costly media such as the internet.

UCG;s internet rankings somewhat reflect this as overall, it may be number one in reach of the COGs (though temporary surges for some who have appointed themselves to offices that God did not ordain them for sometimes do better).

Yet, UCG’s real focus seems to not be public proclamation as its general website (www.ucg.org) has a far greater reach than its public proclamation website, whereas with LCG it is the opposite–LCG’s public proclamation website (www.tomorrowsworld.org) site has a far greater reach than its general website (www.lcg.org).

And while UCG can now say that nearly 14 years after its founding that it is looking at new media, thus far its effectiveness with media such as television seems not to have been particularly effective.  Here is the latest statistics that I recall seeing (and there are probably updates that I do not recall):

Thus, far UCG’s focus (and its history of where it actually spends its money, see UCG Publishes Financials)  indicates that media to reach the world with the gospel of the kingdom is less of a priority than it is with LCG.

Of course, that is one of the reasons that I choose to support LCG as opposed to UCG.

Problems in Belgium and Iceland

It is not just the USA and its Anglo allies that are experiencing economic problems.  Let’s look at news of first Belgium and then Iceland:

Belgian king mulls formal government resignation

AFP – Dec 19, 2008

BRUSSELS (AFP) — Belgium’s King Albert II ushered in Friday a new period of political uncertainty, deferring a decision on whether to allow the government to resign over a legal scandal linked to a major bank break-up.

After his justice minister fell on his sword over fresh allegations from a top judge, embattled Prime Minister Yves Leterme headed to the royal palace, where he has been a regular visitor during 18 months of crises, to quit.

But the monarch — who instantly rejected Leterme’s attempted resignation in the summer — decided to wait before making a decision, amid widespread doubts about who else might be capable of leading Belgium out of its long malaise.

Damaging economic downturn and a sovereign need to unite the country’s linguistic communities led to urgent consultations late last night with the king’s most trusted advisers. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5iQm6GhczBM1O_jD2w0T3Pl7AC1-g

Iceland: frozen assets

Six months ago, Iceland was one of the world’s richest nations. Now it’s bankrupt. AA Gill visits the first victim of the economic ice age

The Sunday Times – Dec 14, 2008

…the penury of the Icelandic banking system, the collapse of its currency, the parlous implosion of its economy that relegated it from being, per capita, the second or third richest nation in the world to being the shivering Big Issue-seller of Europe, bobbing in the queue somewhere behind Albania and Moldova, is not actually the worst thing that ever happened to this island. That would have to be the two occasions when the plague wiped out more than half of everybody. Iceland didn’t have any rats, but they got Europe’s worst case of bubonic deaths without them. That’s unheard of. That’s virtually impossible — but that’s how Iceland’s luck is. It’s said you make your own luck; it’s never said that your luck also makes you…

Reykjavik is littered with the detritus and shells of things that were once going so well and now aren’t going at all. Like the big four-wheel-drives, bought on a promise and the never-never. The biggest is a Babel-ish building site, palisaded by protective cranes, which was hoping to be a music hall, the Sydney Opera House of the far, far north. There is still a visitors’ centre, with a girl on the phone looking for a new job. There’s a toy model of what it is now unlikely to look like. You can peer through a telescope at nobody working…

Let’s just be clear about what Iceland really is. Most people think it’s the size of the Isle of Wight with the population of, say, Holland. It’s bigger than Hungary, bigger than South Korea, which has a population of 50m. There are just over 300,000 people in Iceland. So that’s a country the size of Portugal with the population of Bradford. Those are Mr Brown’s terrorists.

Iceland imagined that Europe and America would help it out. After all, it has always helped us out. Keflavik was a vital Nato base between the east coast of America and the west coast of Europe in the cold war. We were all in this together. Except, as they were to learn, we were only in it together if we were fat enough to buy ourselves the solution. The Russians bailed Iceland out: Reykjavik could be a very useful place to launder money and cock a snook. And the Faroe Islands, bless them, population 48,000, lent £34m. Everyone in Iceland signed a thank-you card. And finally the IMF came up with a rescue package….

Iceland has grasped this weakness, this greed, this business with money, and turned its back to take an unsentimental look at itself. http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/economics/article5329762.ece

Notice how Iceland quickly moved from being wealthy to being an economic problem.  This is almost the case in Belgium–which is somewhat more of a political than financial problem (though its high debt is also a concern).  However, these are both fairly small nations.  And it appears that they will receive enough help to get by.

Right now, the world is not letting the USA fall, but when it does, it will crash much harder than either Belgium or Iceland.

Senator (now also President Elect) Barack Obama

COGwriter

The following was in the news today:

Supreme Court to talk about Obama 3rd time

WND – Dec 19, 2008

One of the original legal challenges to President-elect Barack Obama’s eligibility for office to reach the U.S. Supreme Court now has been scheduled for a conference, a meeting at which the justices discuss its merits and whether to step into the fray.

Online schedules posted by the court show the case brought by attorney Philip J. Berg is set for a conference Jan. 9.

The case is one among several that already have reached the U.S. Supreme Court and address the issue of Obama’s eligibility to occupy the Oval Office under the U.S. Constitution’s requirement that presidents be “natural born” citizens. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=83980

While I am not sure if the Supreme Court will actually hear this case, I seriously doubt that they would be willing to deny Barack Obama’s election.

Xmas, Dickens, & UCG

The Wall Street Journal had an interesting excerpt article this week about why Westerners observe Christmas:

“The Man Who Invented Christmas:
How Charles Dickens’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ Rescued his Career and Revived Our Holiday Spirits”
Wall Street Journal – Dec 17, 2008 Excerpted with permission from the Crown Publishing Group.

For all the strengths that are evident to the modern eye in A Christmas Carol, and despite his own confidence in the power of his tale, Dickens had at least two good reasons to be apprehensive as publication day for his story approached. One had to do with the nature of the holiday itself, and the other with the dire financial straits he found himself in.

As for the first, Christmas in 1843 was not at all the pre-mier occasion that it is today…

There were no Christmas cards in 1843 England, no Christmas trees at royal residences or White Houses, no Christmas turkeys, no department-store Santa or his million clones, no outpouring of “Yuletide greetings,” no weeklong cessation of business affairs through the New Year, no orgy of gift-giving, no ubiquitous public display of nativity scenes (or court fights regarding them), no holiday lighting extrava-ganzas, and no plethora of midnight services celebrating the birth of a savior.

In fact, despite all of Dickens’s enthusiasms, the holiday was a relatively minor affair that ranked far be-low Easter, causing little more stir than Memorial Day or St. George’s Day does today. In the eyes of the relatively en-lightened Anglican Church, moreover, the entire enterprise of celebrating Christmas smacked vaguely of paganism, and were there Puritans still around, acknowledging the holiday might have landed one in the stocks.

In fact, for much of the first two centuries of settlement in New England, Christmas was scarcely celebrated. As Yule scholar Stephen Nissenbaum points out, from 1659 to 1681 there was actually a law on the books in the Massachusetts Colony that forbade the practice and levied a fine of five shill-ings upon anyone caught in the act. Sitting down with their new native friends for a Thanksgiving feast might have been perfectly acceptable, but when Governor William Bradford discovered a few of his fellow Pilgrims trying to celebrate Christmas the year after their arrival, he broke up the cere-monies and ordered everyone back to their jobs.

Part of the reason that Puritans found the holiday such anathema lies in the holiday’s roots in pagan celebrations that date back to Roman times. There is in fact no reference in the Christian gospels to the birth of Jesus taking place on the twenty-fifth of December, or in any specific month at all. When Luke says, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior,” there is not the slightest indication of what day that might have been. Moreover, as climatologists have pointed out, the typical weather patterns in the high desert region, then as now, make it difficult to believe that shepherds would have been out tending their flocks during frigid, late-December nights, when nighttime lows often dipped below freezing.

For the first several hundred years of Christianity’s prac-tice, and while the death and rebirth of Jesus were venerated upon the highest holy day of Easter, the birth of the savior was not celebrated. It was Pope Julius I who, during the fourth century, designated December 25 as the official date for the birth of Jesus, and scholars believe that he chose the date so that Christianity might attract new members by co-opting the lingering sentiments for the ancient festival of Saturnalia, held annually by Romans in honor of their god of agriculture.

Be-ginning the week before the winter solstice (which occurs between December 20 and 23 each year) and for an entire month, Romans turned their ordinary world topsy-turvy and embarked upon an orgy of drinking and feasting, during which businesses and schools were closed, the government of the city was turned over to the peasants, and slaves were relieved of their masters.

The decision to create Christmas (the term derives from the original “dismissal” or “festival,” i.e., “Mass of Christ”), officially celebrating the birth of Jesus for the first time, brought mixed blessings to the Church. Indeed, many pagans found the new religion that embraced their old customs invit-ing, and the membership rolls grew. On the other hand, Church leaders found that their new Christmas celebrations often got out of hand. As soon as services were over for the day, churchgoers in early modern Europe found it perfectly acceptable to transition directly to a drunken bacchanal, espe-cially if they were part of the disenfranchised class…

As for Christmas, which had been given over utterly to “carnall and sensual delights,” Parliament put it into law in 1644 that December 25 was from then on to be a day of fast-ing and repentance. Such legislation led to discontent and even rioting in rural corners of the land, but the ban on Christmas would stay in place until Charles II returned in 1660 and the monarchy was restored. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122953727828014791.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

Of course, Charles Dickens’s “Christmas Carol” is not really about Jesus, but getting people for feeling guilty for not keeping Christmas and for not caring for others.  And while people need to love one another, it is not biblically necessary (nor advisable) to resort to pagan practices for that to occur.

UCG sent out an email last night giving ten reasons from Scott Ashley why Christmas should not be celebrated:

The Top 10 Reasons Why I Don’t Celebrate Christmas

It’s that time of year again! You are now barraged by the sights, sounds and smells of Christmas. Shoppers are going into spending overdrive, and when the bills arrive, some will wonder if it’s really worth it. Here’s a list of ten reasons from one person on why they kicked the Christmas habit.

1. Christmas is driven by commercialism.

2. Christmas is nowhere mentioned in the Bible.

3. Jesus wasn’t born on or near December 25.

4. The Christmas holiday is largely a recycled pagan celebration.

5. God condemns using pagan customs to worship Him.

6. Christmas is worshipping God in vain.

7. You can’t put Christ back into something He was never in.

8. The Bible nowhere tells us to observe a holiday celebrating Jesus Christ’s birth—but it clearly does tell us to commemorate His death.

9. Christmas obscures God’s plan for mankind.

10. I’d rather celebrate the Holy Days Jesus Christ and the apostles observed.

And UCG is correct on that.  I would add that overeating and getting into debt, which happens to more than a few related to this renamed pagan holiday, are two additional reasons.

And I should add that I feel that Scott Ashley’s logic to not observe it is much better than that publicly proclaimed by WCG this month in order to observe it (see WCG, Christmas, & Biblical Logic).

Arab Cultural Influence

While the Western world tends to downplay Arabic contributions to culture, most historians realize that it was the Arab world that essentially preserved and expanded science during the Middle Ages.  Here are three short reports:

While Europe languished in the Dark Ages, Arab scholars were pioneering developments in algebra and the study of modern astronomy” Nature magazine, March 14, 2002

“While the rest of Europe was in the midnight of the Dark Ages, the Moorish universities of Spain were the beacon of the revival of learning. The Christian teacher was still manipulating the bones of the saints when the Arab physician was practising surgery. The monachal schools and monasteries in Italy, France, and Germany were still grappling with poor scholastic knowledge when Arab scholars were well advanced in the study of Aristotle and Plato. Stimulated by their acquaintance with the works of Ptolemy and Euclid, Galenus and Hippocrates, they extended their researches into the dominions of astronomy, mathematics, and medicine.”  page 7, History of Egypt from 330 B.C. to the Present Time by Angelo Solomon Rappoport, Published by Grolier Society, 1904

This week, the Arab world seemed to be the only voice of nations who would oppose a statement on the worldwide legalization and essential condoning of homosexuality as a right:

U.N. divided over gay rights declaration
Reuters – Dec 18, 2008

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – The U.N. General Assembly split over the issue of gay rights on Thursday after a European-drafted statement calling for decriminalization of homosexuality prompted an Arab-backed one opposing it.

Diplomats said a joint statement initiated by France and the Netherlands gathered 66 signatures in the 192-nation assembly after it was read out by Argentina at a plenary session. A rival statement, read out by Syria, gathered some 60.

The two statements remained open for further signatures, the diplomats said. No resolution was drafted on the issue and there was no voting, they added.

The division in the General Assembly reflected conflicting laws in the world at large. According to sponsors of the Franco-Dutch text, homosexuality is illegal in 77 countries, seven of which punish it by death.

The European Union-backed document, noting that the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was marked this month, said those rights applied equally to all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

It urged states “to take all the necessary measures, in particular legislative or administrative, to ensure that sexual orientation or gender identity may under no circumstances be the basis for criminal penalties, in particular executions, arrests or detention.”

But the opposing document said the statement “delves into matters which fall essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of states” and could lead to “the social normalization, and possibly the legitimization, of many deplorable acts including pedophilia.”

“We note with concern the attempts to create ‘new rights’ or ‘new standards,’ by misinterpreting the Universal Declaration and international treaties to include such notions that were never articulated nor agreed by the general membership,” it added.

This, it said, could “seriously jeopardize the entire international human rights framework.”

Muslim countries have for years opposed international attempts to legalize homosexuality.

U.S. officials said the United States had not signed either document. They said the broad framing of the language in the statement supporting decriminalization created conflicts with U.S. law, but gave no further details…

Syrian Ambassador Bashar Ja’afari told reporters sponsors of the statement had “cornered” other members by springing the declaration on them. http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUSTRE4BH7EW20081218

It was astounding to see on the news last night (CNN) how many view homosexual marriage as a civil right and who consider that allowing a Protestant who opposes such “marriages” to give a prayer at Barack Obama’s presidential inauguration as a massive betrayal–times have certainly changed in the USA.

And while there are many problems (moral, political, religious, social, and economic) in the Arab lands, it is nice to see that as a group, there are some sound doctrines that they are not backing away from in order to simply please those who seem to be set on the moral decline of the world.

FBI Denies Investigating PCG

Gerald Flurry of the Philadelphia Church of God
Gerald Flurry

COGwriter

PCG took more action against FOX 25’s public statements against them.  At its website, as well as in an additional full page ad in The Edmund Sun, Gerald Flurry wrote:

THE PHILADELPHIA CHURCH OF GOD ASKS
FOX 25 NEWS:
WHAT FBI “INVESTIGATION” ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

FOX 25’s news director, Joe Spadea, told the Edmond Sun that Nick Winkler’s November 24-25 report on the Philadelphia Church of God (PCG) was based on “exhaustive” and objective investigative reporting. But the fact is, the report was filled with half-truths and outright errors. Our reputation was trashed by this shoddy report. We feel we must set the record straight.

Mr. Winkler made passing references to police and FBI investigations of our church. Where did he get this information? We know of no such investigations. Apparently, neither does the FBI. After the Fox 25 report aired, we called the local FBI, and they told us, “I don’t know what he could have been referring to.”

Why would Fox 25 casually include such an inflammatory false accusation? Surely they understand how the charge of a federal investigation would unfairly prejudice their viewers against us. The FBI agents we spoke with told us, “Don’t believe everything the media says.” Amen to that.

Two years ago, the FBI visited our campus. They had received reports of small aircraft activity in the area and wanted to know if it originated from our licensed airstrip. We told them the airstrip had never been used since we purchased the property in 2000.

Is this the FBI “investigation” Fox 25 inserted into its piece to create the impression that some sort of Waco-style confrontation is forthcoming between the FBI and our church?

The FBI has “investigated” the church, Fox 25 warned—WITHOUT ELABORATING ON THE NATURE OF THE INVESTIGATION. That is diabolical. During his hour-and-a-half interview with my son, why didn’t Nick Winkler ask one question about the so-called FBI investigation? If his intent was to include it in the piece, wouldn’t an honest reporter at least want an explanation from the organization supposedly being investigated?

As I stated from the beginning, while I consider that Gerald Flurry is a self-appointed false prophet, I did not believe that FOX 25 should have made certain inuendos against PCG that it did (see PCG on the News and PCG Responds to FOX 25).

Of course, this is not the first time that the media has intentionally misrepresented “evidence” about those who have some association with the COG.  But this is perhaps the most blatant episode this year.

TRANSFORMED FROM TRUTH

Worldwide Church of God Transformed from Truth to Fairy Tales

COGwriter

In the Dec 2008/Jan 2009 edition of WCG’s Christian Odyssey magazine, its president J. Tkach made the following comments:

Argument 1: “We don’t know the date of Christ’s birth.”
It is true that no one knows for certain on what day or even month of the year Jesus was born…

Argument 2: “Christmas is commercialized and materialistic.”
Without doubt the Christmas holiday season has become a commercial rat race for many people…

Argument 3: “Most Christmas traditions originate in paganism.”
There is no denying that some of the traditional practices and elements that are part of our Christmas celebration are similar to those found in ancient pagan religious ceremonies.

Argument 4: “Jeremiah 10:2-4 condemns the use of Christmas trees.”
The King James Version of this passage reads: “Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen…. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.”

On the surface it might seem that Jeremiah is describing Christmas trees…Jeremiah 10 condemns idols…

…nothing more worthy of celebration than the coming of our Savior into the world!

I am glad that Joseph Tkach admits much of the obvious (though he could have admitted that the ties to paganism are much stronger than he indicated and that December 25th has Mithras’ birthday), even though he still endorses and supports this paganized approach to Christ.

Decorated trees, as Christians should know, have nothing to do with the Jesus of the Bible.  And J. Tkach apparently overlooked the fact that when Jeremiah was inspired to write “Learn not the way of the heathen” that this indicates that adding pagan practices to worship is not acceptable for God’s people.

Period.

Instead of teaching that, the article then has a section titled Faulty Logic.  The gist of it is that WCG is teaching that adopting pagan practices is fine and those who condemn them are not as intellectually-gifted as the WCG leadership.  This appeal to intellectual vanity would seem to mainly to appeal to people who wish to be deceived.

The truth is that neither Jesus, His apostle, nor His early followers celebrated Jesus’ birth.  Nor did they consider that it was nearly as important as His death (which is observed through the Passover season–which, unlike Christmas, is something that the New Testament does teach; cf. 1 Corinthians 5:7-8).

If the Bible considered the celebration of Jesus’ birth to be important, it would have stated that.  Instead, Jesus taught to observe Passover as He had done (John 13:1-15; ! Corinthians 11:23-26)–yet almost none who profess Christ do what Jesus said to do–and, for one example, they reason around Jesus’ commandments such as footwashing (John 13:13-15).

Doing what the Jesus and the Apostles’ taught in the Bible is biblical logic–it overrule the “Faulty Logic” arguments that WCG raised.

Why would real Christians want to do something that clearly does not have biblical endorsement, but instead was a compromise with paganism?

In another article in the same issue, WCG had the following sub-headline “Practical ways to avoid Christmas debt”.  And it fails to simply state that the obvious way is that Christians are to obey God, not follow the lustful ways of the world that lead to that type of debt.

Will you follow the leaders of the New Testament and “obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29) or rely on the “faulty logic” of those who make up traditions that do not have biblical endorsement?

Sarkozy Wants Beast Power & Dollar Tanks

Although he did not identify it as the “Beast power”, notice what the outgoing EU president wants:

Sarkozy pleads for Europe of nations

EUobserver – Dec 16, 2008

STRASBOURG – Outgoing EU president Nicolas Sarkozy on Tuesday (16 December) pleaded for a Europe built on strong states as opposed to a federal Europe, arguing that all countries within the EU had the same rights, but maybe not the same responsibilities.

“We shall not build Europe without the [nation] states. As European as you may be, Europe is not the enemy of nations,” Mr Sarkozy told MEPs gathered for a plenary session in Strasbourg.

“Wanting to pass above the heads of those who have been elected in their countries, it is not a mistake, it is a fundamentalism… Wanting to build Europe against the [sovereignty of] nations would be a historical mistake,” he said in a speech presenting the outcomes of France’s six months at the EU helm…

More powers for the commission president

Mr Sarkozy also reiterated an argument he made last week about increasing the powers of the European Commission president.

The president should be “active, reactive and proactive,” said the French leader.

He also underlined that the bigger the commission gets, the stronger its president should be in order to boost his “harmonising role.”

In a series of concessions agreed by EU leaders last week in order to allow Dublin to make possible a second vote on the bloc’s Lisbon Treaty some time in the course of next year, they included a guarantee that each member state would keep a commissioner in future European Commissions – despite the document initially foreseeing a reduction of the size of the institution. http://euobserver.com/9/27307.

Now, the Bible shows that a strong King of the North will arise and lead the nations of Europe.  And it is clear that many wish for this to happen.  Nicolas Sarkozy seems to really want the European Union to have the power of the end-time Beast–though I suspect if he has any religious connotations to it, he (as a Catholic) is probably hoping for the prophesied French “Great Monarch” (who seems to be the same one that the Bible calls the Beast and the King of the North) to arise.

Nicolas Sarkozy has actually and specifically called for a stronger European military in the past (see France Wants Greater EU Military), and that certainly would be necessary for Europe to fulfill its prophesied role as the final Beast power.

Later in the news today (although the source has tomorrow’s USA date), the US dollar somewhat tanked:

Dollar Trades Near 13-Year Low Versus Yen on Near-Zero Fed Rate

Bloomberg – Dec 18, 2008  excerpt…

Dollar Index

“The market’s just been spooked,” said Lee Hardman, currency strategist at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Ltd. in London. “This has fueled concern that the Fed is going to ramp up the pace of printing money and that this will lead to higher inflation.”

The dollar traded at $1.4420 per euro at 7:08 a.m. in Tokyo, after falling as much as 3 percent to $1.4437, the weakest level since Sept. 29. It was the biggest intraday drop since the euro’s debut in 1999. The ICE’s Dollar Index, which tracks the greenback against the euro, the yen, the pound, the Canadian dollar, the Swiss franc and Sweden’s krona, fell 2.2 percent to 78.908 yesterday. The dollar has given back about half of a rally in which it increased 24 percent from a low of 71.314 on July 15 to 88.463 on Nov. 21.

This is a very much a panic exodus from the dollar,” said Brian Dolan, chief currency strategist at FOREX.com, a unit of online currency trading firm Gain Capital in Bedminster, New Jersey. “The primary reason is the Fed’s embrace of quantitative easing, in which they start printing dollars and start flooding the market with U.S. assets.”

The federal budget deficit widened last month to $164.4 billion compared with a gap of $98.2 billion in November a year earlier, the Treasury Department reported last week. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a.jVHvzxZ0wM&refer=home

The USA’s plans to vastly increase debt are not being well received by many investors.

Global Food Riots in 2009

Various experts are expecting a probable increase in food riots in 2009:

Financial crisis pushing hungry to wall, WFP says
Reuters – Dec 16, 2008

NEW DELHI, Dec 16 (Reuters) – The economic crisis is pushing the world’s hungriest people to the wall, but a fraction of the cost of financial rescue packages could make a huge difference, the head of the U.N.’s World Food Programme said on Tuesday.

“I don’t think it is just an issue of compassion, it is an issue of global peace and security,” WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran told Reuters in an interview.

If countries already suffering from the effects of high food prices do not get help now, there could be more instability and food riots around the world in 2009, perhaps on an even bigger scale than before, she said.

“Globally, hunger is on a march,” said Sheeran, visiting India for the first time to combat malnutrition there. “The food crisis itself has hit the world harder than I would have ever expected,” she added. “We expect the financial crisis will add to the pressure on the world’s most vulnerable.”

Sheeran, whose organisation will feed nearly 100 million of the world’s hungriest people this year, appealed to the United States and Europe to set aside just one percent of the cost of financial rescue packages to combat global hunger…

The WFP will start 2009 needing $5.2 billion to feed the hungry urgently in places like Ethiopia, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Afghanistan and North Korea. Without a rapid injection of funds, millions will run out of help by March when warehouses empty. Rising food and fuel prices have already hit the poorest and hungriest hard. The Food and Agriculture Organization said in June that 75 million more people had been pushed into hunger as a result.

Last week it added 40 million people to that list, meaning there are almost one billion hungry in total — nearly one sixth of humanity. http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/DEL347128.htm

In 2008, there were even temporary limits placed on buying rice in the United States (see Rice and the Beginning of Sorrows).  We will see what 2009 will bring.

But, of course, famines and related disruptions have long happened, and were even predicted:

3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately, 4 Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?”

5 And Jesus, answering them, began to say: “Take heed that no one deceives you. 6 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and will deceive many. 7 But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be troubled; for such things must happen, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. 9 But watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 11 But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12 Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 13 And you will be hated by all men for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved…” (Mark 13:3-13).

Events seems to be lining up to fulfill the above and other biblical prophecies.  But the end (meaning the great tribulation, which starts afterwords) is NOT yet:

18 And pray that your flight may not be in winter. 19 For in those days there will be tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of creation which God created until this time, nor ever shall be. 20 And unless the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake, whom He chose, He shortened the days…

37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!” (Mark 13:18-20,37).

A period of persecution combined with successfully proclaiming the gospel to the world as a witness precedes the great tribulation (see also Persecutions by Church and State).  And then the faithful church FLEES.

Until then, Jesus says to watch and pray.

Although those who trust in things on the earth will be disappointed, the wise may also wish to look at physical preparation scriptures, such as Proverbs 6:6-8, as they are certainly in the Bible for a reason.

The presiding evangelist of the Living Church of God (LCG), R.C. Meredith of the Living Church of God publicly has taught:

Put aside some food and store some water…Bad times are coming, have some supplies (Meredith RC. Prophecy Overview. Sermon, July 19, 2008).

And while spiritual preparation is most important, certainly physical preparation makes a lot of sense.

There were earthquakes in Sweden and South Caroline of note today:

Earthquake shakes southern Sweden

The Local, Sweden – Dec 16, 2008

Southern Sweden was rocked by an earthquake early on Tuesday morning which caused a flood of phone calls to emergency services operators from alarmed residents.

“The bed shook for about 20 seconds,” Helsingborg resident John O’Leary told The Local.

O’Leary said the quake woke him at about 6:20am and that the shaking knocked over several items in his apartment.

Uppsala University seismologist Reynir Bödvarsson estimated the quake measured between 4.5 and 5.0 on the Richter scale.

“It was likely felt in much of southern Sweden. For Sweden, this is a very strong quake,” Bödvarsson told the TT news agency…

Tuesday’s tremor was felt primarily by residents in Skane.  People living in Malmö reported feeling strong tremors and buildings throughout the city shook.

“It’s not dangerous for people, but there certainly may be some cracking in the facades of buildings,” said Bödvarsson.

“I’ve never been so scared in my life,” said Tina Morris, who resides in Skurup, about 40 kilometres south east of Malmö.

“The roar of the quake was horrible, but it was the bed shaking that woke me up. I could hear the plates

Weak earthquake hits SC near Charleston

AP – Dec 16, 2008

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A weak earthquake shook parts of the South Carolina coast, tipping over people’s Christmas trees, knocking pictures off walls and causing minor injuries.

The Earthquake Hazards Program of the U.S. Geological Survey says the temblor hit at 7:42 a.m. Tuesday northwest of Charleston. It had a preliminary magnitude of 3.6. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gGL7HfGXfus_72M0ocXAk4c5CYTAD953U8LO1

Of course, earthquakes of these magnitudes, at most, are indication of the beginning of sorrows according to Jesus:

7 And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows (Matthew 24:7-8).

But the end (meaning the Great Tribulation) is not yet (cf. Matthew 24:21).

We in the Living Church of God have tended to consider that the Swedes are mainly descended from the Israelite tribe of Naphtali (see The Lost Tribes of Israel).
