Earthquakes Everywhere: Map of China Earthquake Today

The front page of the local newspaper in San Luis Obispo this morning had the headline “Scientists can’t fully explain quake increase”.

Prophecy watchers, however, are aware that Jesus included earthquakes in various places among what He called the beginning of sorrows:

8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

The 2010 earthquakes seem to be consistent with this prophecy.

Laodicea
Ancient Laodicea

COGwriter

Since some have asked for more information on what is going on with UCG, I thought I would post additional reports from some in UCG.

First of all, since sometime on Monday, the letters are no longer on Mike Bennett’s website.  So, here is the portion of one letter from Roy Holladay that I did not post about when I first reported this:

Over the years the Council has made several administrative changes in the office of president. We very much appreciate the work of Mr. Kilough, as well as that of Presidents Les McCullough and Roy Holladay before him, in laying foundations upon which we continue to build. We are also grateful that we have a system of governance and leadership supportive of that system and unity that allows for such transitions or changes in administration in a peaceful and brotherly manner.
Decisions of this nature are difficult but sometimes deemed necessary. The Council asks everyone for patience and appropriate consideration in discussing this change. Moving forward together in our mission is vital. The unity, peace and healing of the ministry and Church is uppermost in everyone’s mind.

The rest of the letter information is in the post Another UCG Shakeup.

Second, here is some of what UCG minister Ken Treybig sent out about it:

I am disappointed at this turn of events, but encouraged at the gracious nature of the resignations. Many have known there have been differences of opinion between the administration and some on the Council, which has been evident in the reports of Council meetings in the last year or two. I pray always that God will bless us and help us grow in His will in all the challenges we face.

Third, here are some comments from a UCG blogger John Carmack:

First of all, what was handled correctly?

1. The entire membership was notified much at the same time (or, it apparently was planned that way). It is when people learn of events at different times that the truth gets corrupted, much like in a game of telephone. So, let’s try to objectively look at the recent UCG changes. Are there leadership lessons to be drawn from them? I believe that there are.

2. A public announcement was made. The unofficial UCG blog posted the letters from Roy Holladay.

3. No criticism of individuals “on the other side” was made. In fact, praise and thanks for their work was included.

4. Reassurance that the work will continue on, that replacement plans are being put into place and the implication that all will continue onward.

OK, so what didn’t go so well?

1. There was nothing at all concrete in the announcement as to why. You would think that after months of things brewing, you would at least have something you could hang your hat on. At least in the corporate world, you get some line about someone wanting to spend more time with their family.

2. As there was no concrete reason as to why, there is no concrete new direction being pointed out. What is going to be different, and how is it better?

3. Transition of power to one that previously held the post of president. Frankly, I don’t remember anything negative when Mr Holladay was president before. He’s given some fine messages in the past, and he seems like he has a genuine concern for the church. Maybe Mr Holladay is the best choice, but you have to admit that it seems questionable on the surface. There is no explanation as to why he was chosen given the circumstances.

4. Shutting down a blog article after it had already been posted. Given the size of UCG, this actually might have been the best way for the membership to vent. It could have been used as a way to defray hurt feelings as well, but that opportunity was lost. In the end, shutting it down is probably worse than if it had not been posted in the first place.

No matter how you slice it and dice it, the end result makes it look opaque, not transparent. It does not engender trust as a result. An organization can make all sorts of excuses for various miscommunications during a reorg, but the bottom line is that it erodes trust.

As reported before, UCG also posted something for its membership which is shown at UCG Mentions Its “Administrative Changes”.

And yesterday, UCG posted the following from Roy Holladay:

While it may not have been evident to the membership at large, in recent months a serious level of conflict existed about certain issues between the Council of Elders and some administrators. It is one thing to have simple disagreements that arise in the course of choosing a way of action. But when the levels of conflict and disagreement escalate to the point where the Church’s critical work begins to suffer from inaction and it becomes clear that the necessary working relationship and rapport between the Council and its management team has broken down, then it is the direct responsibility of the Council of Elders to act swiftly. That we have done.

During these past months, certain administrators severely disagreed with the oversight and direction that the Council was providing, even though they are bound by the bylaws of the Church to support it. During that same time, the basic work of the Church continued and the level of conflict was unseen by most of you. Given that latter fact I believe you deserve an explanation. However, as I explain where we have recently been, I don’t want to belabor any points because the past is the past. Reconciliation, unity and love are more important than organizational justification. For your review, here are some details.

As part of the General Conference of Elders meetings in 2008 and 2009, the ministers balloted in the established way for a number of new members of the Council of Elders, replacing several members who were part of the administration. As time went on it became apparent that the priorities and perspectives of the existing management team were quite different from those of the Council as chosen by the ministry of the United Church of God.

As collectively established in the beginning of our fellowship 15 years ago, the Council of Elders is directly and solely responsible for oversight and setting direction and policy for the Church. This is quite a different structure from the one we experienced in our former church affiliation where only one or two people at the top made all of the important decisions. We learned through painful experience where that led. The United Church of God, we collectively decided, would be different. We adopted as one of our primary governing principles Proverbs:24:6: “In a multitude of counselors there is safety.”

To put in perspective the now-past situation, allow me to review a few more points of important history. Fifteen years ago we collectively chose a very different structure of governance on the physical level, emphasizing and recognizing of course that the living Head of the spiritual Church is Jesus Christ Himself. The highest authority in our physical organization is the General Conference of Elders, which is all of the nearly 500 elders of the United Church of God who choose to participate. This group is responsible for, among other things, authorizing changes to our governing documents, approving any doctrinal changes and selecting a 12-person Council of Elders. As our Constitution states and openly authorizes, the Council of Elders is to “provide oversight and guidance within the Church for the service and care of local congregations, the preaching of the gospel and the administration of God’s tithes and offerings,” making it “the duly appointed corporate board for the Church and [the] equivalent to a board of directors.”

Functioning under the direction of the Council of Elders is the management team comprised of certain officers (president, treasurer and secretary) and operation managers for finances, media and ministerial services, and a home office staff. These are “selected, approved and directed by the Council.” The Council of Elders is also specifically responsible “to provide direction and oversight to ensure the proper management of the day-to-day affairs of the Corporation, the United Church of God, an International Association.”

During the past few months, disagreements—however well-intentioned—among certain administrators and other ministers about the Council’s direction and priorities mounted up. Without getting into specifics of those disagreements, I will simply say that the situation and stalemate had grown very frustrating to all. Matters finally came to a head with the introduction of a proposed resolution that was outside of the Church’s established means for proposing changes in the Church’s governing documents and structure. Without even the traditional review of the full Council and our legal counsel, the proposed resolution was placed in the formal mailing to all ministers with the idea that it would be voted on at the upcoming General Conference of Elders next month.

As chairman, I can tell you that the Council intensely sought a variety of expert counsel to address our differences, including this issue. It was not taken lightly. Based on this variety of counsel, both from within and without, the Council determined that the resolution was harmful and against the protections and principles of this Church’s governing structure. To prevent potential harm to the Church, the Council determined that the resolution should be withdrawn.

However, the larger matter that remained was the underlying differences that gave rise to that improper resolution in the first place. As is pointed out in Amos:3:3, “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” To end this long stalemate and achieve a fresh start with a Council and administration working together, I and other Council members met with the president, one of the sponsors of this resolution that we were obliged to withdraw. The differences that had led up to this situation were well known by all in the meeting, even though they were not well known to the general membership or most of the ministry of the Church. He agreed to resign his position at the Council’s request. In a spirit of harmony, he also openly agreed to help effect an orderly transition. Shortly after the meeting with the president, the operation managers for the Church’s ministry and media both offered to resign. All of the resignations were accepted.

UCG has had a lot of governmental changes and shake-ups. My observation is that it never truly has been that “united”.

Update on CEM’s Ron Dart

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Dixon Cartwright of The Journal advised me where I get more information on CEM’s Ron Dart.  Apparently he is supposed to have a trachiotomy today:

April 13, 2010

Posted by Skip Martin on the Caringbridge site:

9:50 PM:

The late afternoon visit with Ron was very uplifting. Allie and Larry were both encouraged. Ron was awake and aware of their presence for the first ten or so minutes. Larry asked him to raise his right hand, and he held it up. Then, he got a little tired and drifted off to sleep. He still had some of the sedatives in his system.

They plan to perform a trachiotomy tomorrow. This is standard procedure for the treatment Ron is receiving.

All in all, this visit was very encouraging.

I was not aware that his situation was to that point.

The following should be of interest to prophecy watchers:

http://english.cctv.com/20100407/101362.shtml

We in the Living Church of God have tended to believe that a peace deal involving the Middle East and the EU would be confirmed, and probably in some autumn.  Dr. Meredith even mentioned in a sermon (Prepare for the Fast, Given, February 6, 2010) that such a deal (Daniel 9:27) could happen as early as the Fall of 2010.

And while it may not happen quite that soon (and Dr. Meredith did not claim it would be, only that it could be), it is a fact that the Europeans intend to confirm some type of Middle East peace deal.

And prophecy will be fulfilled.  And if not this year, not too many years past this Fall.

Japan Has a Debt Problem, Bankrupt by 2012?

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Japan’s debt made the news:

Risk of Japan going bankrupt is real, say analysts

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5iV4Pk6Ty-CGoOR84zQgvH_Idf_XQ

Japan will likely issue more government bonds and be able to extend itself until at least 2012.

But there are several differences between Japan’s debt and that of the USA.  For one, the USA owes Japan about a trillion dollars.  But if the USA essentially defaults (through monetizing its debt to the point that the USA is worth considerably less), then the situation in Japan would likely become more desperate.

Japan will, eventually, end up making some type of deal with China.  At the time of the end, the Bible tells of military co-operation between “the kings of the sunrise” (Revelation 16:12, literal translation)–and that would seem to have to include Japan (which is known as “the land of the rising sun”).  And other prophecies (e.g. Revelation 9:13-20) strongly indicate that China would be in that same deal.  But the Bible is not clear as to whether debt may trigger it, but it might.

As Jesus said:

37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:36-37)

UCG Mentions Its “Administrative Changes”

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Laodicea

UCG officially reported the following today:

Updates On UCG Administration Changes

April 12, 2010

Based on actions taken by the Church’s Council of Elders in early April, an orderly transition for certain positions within the Church’s executive management structure has begun. At the formal request of the Council, Clyde Kilough resigned his position as president of the Church and it was accepted. A few other senior members of the Church’s management team tendered their resignations from administrative positions. All were accepted and Mr. Kilough and the other ministers involved will now re-enter the full-time field ministry of the United Church of God.

Roy Holladay, a former president of the Church and the current chairman of the Council of Elders, has temporarily assumed the position of president. During this transition period and beyond, the Church’s intense focus on the preaching of the Gospel will remain unchanged, including the plans to move forward with new commercial television programming. Details of this transition and interim appointments to administrative positions will be announced shortly by the Council.  http://members.ucg.org/content/updates-ucg-administration-changes

Suggesting that the resignation of the president and other two top leaders in UCG are simply “UCG Administrative Changes” is one way to attempt to minimize what this means.

Which is?

That UCG still has major differences in how it should be governed and never truly has been “united” (see, for example UCG Having More Dissent which highlights some of its 2008 issues).

Now, I am not trying to imply that the changes in UCG in the short-term are necessarily bad, just that once again, its Council of Elders has not been unified.

Guttenberg Wants Germany’s Army More Efficient

Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg said Monday…Guttenberg appointed a commission of six experts to come up with a concept by the end of the year to make the structures, command lines and procurement more efficient. http://www.etaiwannews.com/etn/news_content.php?id=1225597&lang=eng_news

The Local, Berlin – April 12, 2010

German Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg said Monday he wanted to restructure the Bundeswehr to improve effectiveness of the country’s armed forces.

http://www.thelocal.de/national/20100412-26487.html

The German military has historically been known for its “efficiency” and sadly will likely be again in the not so distant future according to biblical (Revelation 13:3-4) and other prophecies.

Karl-Theodor Guttenberg also wants NATO to be changed, and fairly quickly (see NATO, Baron Guttenberg, and the King of the North).  That may not bode well for the one nation known as the USA.

As mentioned before (Statfor’s Caesar; Karl-Theodor von und zu Guttenberg a Prince of the North?), he is one to watch to become the final the King of the North.  And he needs a  more effective military to do that.  And right now Karl-Theodor von und zu Guttenberg is working towards the goal of a more “efficient and effective” military for Germany (and Europe).

Mike Bennett (a UCG member that my wife and I met decades ago when he was in WCG) posted two letters from UCG that stated:

Dear Fellow Elders,

This letter is to inform you of a decision reached today between the Council of Elders and President Clyde Kilough. The Council held an executive session teleconference on April 8, 2010, where it was decided that a change in the office of president of the United Church of God was needed. Since Mr. Kilough had previously indicated that if the Council desired a change in the office of president, he would likely be willing to resign, the Council decided to ask him for his resignation as president.

On Friday morning, April 9, Council Chairman Roy Holladay and two Council members met with Mr. Kilough at the home office in Milford, Ohio. Following this discussion, Mr. Kilough tendered his resignation as president of the Church and it was accepted. He will be reassigned to the field ministry and will continue to contribute to the work of the Church.

Pursuant to Bylaw Article 9.5, Chairman Roy Holladay will take over the duties of the office of president until such time as the Council shall appoint a new president. A meeting was held with the home office staff to inform them of this decision…

I am also planning to send out a letter to the membership next week regarding this change in the office of president.

On behalf of the Council of Elders,

Roy Holladay

Dear Fellow Elders,

Today I accepted the resignations of Jim Franks as Ministerial Services operation manager and Larry Salyer as Media operation manager. Both were very gracious in their approach, and they desire only the best for the United Church of God. They have expressed a willingness to work toward a harmonious transition of their responsibilities.

With the change of responsibilities both Jim and Larry have expressed a desire to continue to serve the Church by pastoring congregations of the United Church of God. Jim and Larry have proven to be able pastors of churches that they have pastored.

I will be recommending to the Council next week a temporary team of men to work with Ministerial Services until a new president is chosen. I mentioned the possibility of two men to the home office staff, but the Council will need to approve the team. The new president will have the responsibility of choosing his own operation managers once he takes office.

Shortly the Council will announce a process for choosing a new president. Your prayers and involvement will be deeply appreciated.

With deep appreciation,

Roy Holladay

Council Chairman and Interim President

Hungary Votes to the Right, an EU Trend?

The electorate in Hungary voted to move to the “right”:

Hungary elections: first step to power for far-Right since Nazi era
The far-Right has taken more parliamentary seats in Hungary’s national elections than at any time since the Second World War.

This seems to also have been the case with Austria a while back.  And some of this appears to be happening in France:

France. Far-right party ‘rises from the ashes’
Ottawa Citizen, Canwest News Service – March 16, 2010
French far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen on Monday celebrated his party’s surprise strong score in regional polls. “It is the phoenix rising from the ashes,” said the 81-year-old, who gave Europe a scare in 2002 when he beat the Socialist candidate in the first round vote for the French presidency. http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/France+right+party+rises+from+ashes/2687185/story.html

The reality is that there will be change in Europe.  Europe will, perhaps after apparitions/signs/lying wonders, become more religious as well.  And this will not bode well for the Muslims or the Anglo-descended nations according to biblical and Catholic prophecies.  The political trend in Europe seems to be leaning more that way in the past couple of years.

Gazing into the “highest heaven”, Dante

For some time, I have been thinking about writing an article on heaven.  Until then, the following news reports were of interest:

Book review: ‘Heaven: Our Enduring Fascination with the Afterlife,’ by Lisa Miller
Washington Post – April 11, 2010

… According to polls cited by Miller, more than 80 percent of Americans believe in some form of afterlife, 61 percent believe they will go straight to heaven when they die, nearly half believe they will be reunited with loved ones there, and nearly a quarter believe it’s possible to talk with the dead. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/09/AR2010040902198.html

Trouble in Paradise
Why are Americans so credulous about heaven?

We know precisely when this story of projecting our lack into the sky began: 165 B.C., patented by the ancient Jews. Until then, heaven—shamayim—was the home of God and his angels. http://www.slate.com/id/2249657/ The heaven you think you’re headed to—a reunion with your lost relatives in the light—is a very recent invention

Heaven: A Jewish invention
Yet Judaisn puts less emphasis on the afterlife than other faiths. Contemplating a Passover-Easter conundrum
Toronto Star – April 1, 2010    by Cathal Kelly   excerpt…
As Lisa Miller points out in her new book, Heaven, the great party in the sky has abandoned its strict door policy. Everybody’s acting as if no matter how late they arrive, they’re bound to get in. Nearly 80 per cent of Americans now profess to believe in Heaven. Canada continues to be the careful country cousin — only 58 per cent of us feel similarly, according to Gallup…

So according to the research of Lisa Miller, the idea of heaven as many now accept really came from a Jewish writer around 165 B.C. (which means it did not come from the Bible as the Hebrew scriptures were complete prior to that time).

And less some feel that it came from the New Testament for Christians, let’s start with something that Jesus taught:

13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven (John 3:13).

The Apostle Peter taught:

29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day (Acts 2:29).

34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens (Acts 2:34).

And this shows that even AFTER the resurrection of Jesus, no one was in heaven, except Jesus.

There were various pagan concepts of heaven, and in my view, that is what influenced the Jews and finally those who follow Greco-Roman faiths in later times.

Notice that in the 2nd century, the Greco-Roman saint Justin wrote the following:

“For I choose to follow not men or men’s doctrines, but God and the doctrines [delivered] by Him. For if you have fallen in with some who are called Christians, but who do not admit this [truth], and venture to blaspheme the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; who say there is no resurrection of the dead, and that their souls, when they die, are taken to heaven; do not imagine that they are Christians” (Dialogue. Chapter 80).

It never fails to amaze me that the Greco-Romans (including Protestants) consider that Justin was a saint, yet he taught that if someone believed that they went to heaven upon death, that they were not Christian.  That is something that the Greco-Romans should ponder.

The Bible clearly teaches that while our reward is IN heaven (Matthew 5:12), that it comes down from heaven to the earth:

2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”  (Revelation 21:2-4)
