Death Toll Climbing to at Least 74 from India Quake; Plus a Quake in Guatemala

The death toll from India’s earthquake keeps rising and has killed people also in Nepal and Tibet:

Earthquake toll 74 as rain, slides hamper rescue

Times of India – ‎19/09/11, 20/09/11 in India

SINGTAM (SIKKIM)/GANGTOK: Rescuers battled heavy rains and cleared dozens of landslides while making their way to Sikkim, the ground zero of Sunday evening’s 6.8 magnitude earthquake that has so far claimed 74 lives across three countries – India, Nepal and China (Tibet)

There is a new report of an earthquake in Guatemala:

CBS News – ‎19 September 2011

(AP) GUATEMALA CITY – The US Geological Survey says a magnitude-5.8 earthquake has hit southeast of Guatemala’s capital. Local news media reported there was at least some damage near the epicenter, about 32 miles (53 kilometers) southeast of the of Guatemala’s capital.

Jesus, of course, warned about a time with such issues:

8 … And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be…troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

We may be at this prophetic point as all the earthquakes and other problems that have happened in the past year or so could be considered as “troubles”.

Perhaps the earthquake can serve as another wake-up call to people everywhere that the world can change very quickly and that the time to repent is now:

30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead. (Acts 17:30-31)

There are troubles and repentance is needed. Things are going to get much worse than this.

EU Resembling ‘Holy Roman Empire’ and Religion Urged by Germany

Crown of the Beast of Revelation?
Crown of the “Holy Roman Empire”

COGwriter

A reader forwarded me the following news items:

As a blend of national and supra-national, the EU resembles the Holy Roman Empire, which united central Europe from the 10th Century until Luther (technically until 1806).  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financialcrisis/8755881/Germany-and-Greece-flirt-with-mutual-assured-destruction.html

This is a true reformation moment in Europe’s history, when a centralised and authoritarian Holy Roman Empire, grown fat and arrogant on the tithes of subject peoples, suddenly overreaches its power and faces a crisis of legitimacy.  http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/sep/15/europe-national-identity-debt-crisis

The idea of a so-called Holy Roman Empire being formed in Europe is becoming more obvious to even secular news sources.  FWIW, Charlemagne was crowned the first Holy Roman Emperor, reputedly with the crown shown above, by Pope Leo III in Rome on Christmas Night, 800 AD.

Now, Pope Benedict XVI is coming to Germany and notice what Germany’s leader stated that she wanted two days ago:

Merkel urges Christian unity ahead of pope visit
AFP – Sept 18, 2011
Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday called for Christians to unite against the advance of secularism as she prepared to welcome Pope Benedict XVI on a landmark visit back to his native Germany.”I think it is important to constantly reinforce the unity of Christians at a time when we are confronted by a growing secularism,” said Merkel, who is herself the daughter of a Protestant pastor who died earlier this month.

“What the Christian faith has in common should always be remembered,” she said in her weekly video podcast…

“This is a source of strength which we should encourage through dialogue among the religions,” added Merkel, who is leader of the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party.http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jiSDdTVUwXVuVuf7rnVcGC8rwh8Q?docId=CNG.51bb5e6d4f1391dd6fdec28749285e91.561

So, even somewhat secular Germany seems to be supportive of the religious aspect of Europe, and hence sounds like it to wants a new “Holy Roman Empire.”

Furthermore, Catholic prophecies look forward to the time of a new Holy Roman Empire and an emperor (who is often referred to as the Great Monarch.

Here is some information from my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect that documents some of the prophecies about this:

Desmond A. Birch (20th century): Several private prophecies of canonized Saints specifically state that there will be a latter restoration of the Holy Roman Empire and that there will be at least one last Holy Roman Emperor.

Aystinger the German (12th century?):  There shall arise in the last times a Prince sprung from the Emperor Charles who shall…reform the Church.  He will be Emperor of Europe.

St. Methodius (385): A day will come when the enemies of Christ will boast…Then a Roman emperor will rise in great fury against them…In the last period Christians will not appreciate the great grace of God who provided a Great Monarch, a long duration of peace, a splendid fertility of the earth…Many men will wonder if the Catholic faith is the true and only saving one and whether the Jews are perhaps correct when they still expect the Messias.

D. Birch (20th century): Many of the prophecies speak of the fact that the Great King at first will not be well-liked, especially by the French clergyThe Great King will be crowned Holy Roman Emperor by the reigning Pope…A man who will subsequently be known as a great saint will ultimately be elected pope near the end of the Chastisement…He will be heavily responsible for the French acceptance of a king to be their military and civil leader.

The fact that this leader will not, according to Catholic prophecy, be well-like by the French-clergy suggests that he is not one who is truly dedicated to the Catholic faith.  I believe he, like Emperor Constantine, will be a politician first and will use religion as a means of unity–and will compromise with what little religion he pretends to have whenever he believes it is in his personal and political interest.

The Bible, as my book as points out, warns against an emerging European Beast power headed up by a semi-religious figure who will have the support of one that I have tended to describe as an antipope (who, BTW, my book states is not believed to be the current pope).  More and more steps are taking place for this European Beast power to rise up.

TW Reports on Oklahoma Drought

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

COGwriter

In its latest TW News & Prophecy, the Living Church of God reported:

Oklahoma’s Cattle Industry Is Drying Up. Much of Oklahoma has had no significant rainfall in more than a year, resulting in zero crop growth. As a consequence, there is virtually no local food for cattle and it must be imported at great cost. Ranchers are selling entire herds that have taken a decade or more to build because they have no other choice. In the words of one expert, ranchers are “selling their factories”—referring to the potential for future cattle production—because they see a bleak future in an industry that, in some cases, has been a family business for generations. As entire herds are sold, if moist weather does return to Oklahoma anytime soon, it would take several years to build back to productive cattle levels again (Drover’s Cattle Netwo rk, August 30, 2011). Bible prophecies have long warned that God will punish the Israelite-descended nations if they turn away from Him. Hosea wrote, “Therefore the land will mourn; and everyone who dwells there will waste away with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air; even the fish of the sea will be taken away… because they have ceased obeying the Lord” (Hosea 4:3, 10). Moses also conveyed God’s warning, “if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments… your strength shall be spent in vain; for your land shall not yield its produce, nor shall the trees of the land yield their fruit” (Leviticus 26:14-20). As Israelite nations turn away from the laws of God, we are watching these ancient prophecies coming alive in headlines today!

Many parts of the USA are suffering from drought as are parts of Africa and other lands. Droughts can contribute to famines, and foods do not grow in fires (like Texas has had–for those less familiar with USA geography, Oklahoma shares its southern border with Texas).

We may see food inflation and spotty food shortages showing up in parts of the world as early as next month.  Sorrows seem to be increasing.

My 2009 book, 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect mentioned the following was about to happen:

Odd weather patterns result in food shortages and natural disasters. Matthew 24:7
The world is actually in a berserk transition, as the real age of peace is not yet here. It may be a period of chaos. It is the beginning of sorrows Matthew 24:8

Perhaps the record weather problems can serve as another wake-up call for Americans and others.  As my book indicated, weather-related troubles with their related food issues, of course, are biblically expected:

7…And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:7-8).

8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

Droughts certainly would seem to qualify as “troubles” and we seem to be in the time Jesus called “the beginning of sorrows.”

And a more terrible hour of trial is coming (Revelation 3:10), and the USA itself (as well as Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand also) will experience significant starvation in its land (cf. Ezekiel 5:15-17).

Chinese Warning that Israel Faces Serious Diplomatic Challenge

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Jerusalem

COGwriter

A Chinese news report has the following:

Israel confronted with serious diplomatic trouble

BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) — Diplomatically embattled Israel is in serious trouble now — It is fighting separate diplomatic battles with three important regional players — Turkey, Egypt and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). The jewish state and Turkey, once one of its most important partners in the Middle East, have been locked in a bitter diplomatic dispute since May 31, 2010In Egypt, the first Arab nation to sign a peace treaty and establish diplomatic ties with Israel, anti-Israel sentiments have been running high…
Israel’s diplomatic headaches with the two countries are further compounded by a diplomatic triumph for the PLO, whose leader Mahmoud Abbas has reaffirmed his resolve to press the UN Security Council for recognition of a Palestinian state by seeking full UN membership. http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/indepth/2011-09/18/c_131145490.htm

On that last point, China itself has declared that it would to support the Palestinians (see China to Back Palestinian Statehood).

Although most everyone expects that the USA will veto Palestine’s request, based on statements from the USA president in April this may not be guaranteed (see Obama Wants Peace Deal and Palestinian State in September).  But whether the USA uses its veto power in the United Nations or not many, including leaders in Israel, suspect that the result of the Palestinian request will be war (see Growing Concern for a Regional War in the Middle East and Israel: Forced Peace Plan to Cause World War).

Notice an Israeli report from the Palestinian side:

Palestinians warn Obama not to stand in way of statehood

On Saturday, the Palestinians were at it again, warning the Obama Administration that vetoing their UN Security Council bid for statehood would “destroy” the two-state solution to the conflict.

“Anyone who supports the two-state solution should back the Palestinian effort [at the UN],” insisted chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat. http://www.israeltoday.co.il/News/tabid/178/nid/22949/language/en-US/Default.aspx

Notice also the following news item that came out earlier this month:

The unforeseen risks of Palestinian statehood

Ha’aretz – Louis Rene Beres – ‎Sep 5, 2011‎

But the main danger for Israel would lie latent in Palestinian statehood itself. Once accepted by the UN, whether lawfully or unlawfully, a Palestinian state would increase the risks of both mass-destruction terrorism and regional nuclear war.

I have long written that there may have to be a war in the Middle East before the peace deal of Daniel 9:27 will be implemented.  It could involve some of the Palestinians, some of the Egyptians, Iran, and likely Syria.  And I believe that a regional nuclear war is possible (Isaiah 17:1).

The troubles that Israel is facing are more than simply diplomatic.  Islamic prophecy indicates that after a time of chaos, a leader called the Imam Mahdi will rise up.  This leader may be the one to be the final biblical leader known as the King of the South (Daniel 11:40).  While many Shi’ites believe that Iran will first takeover Jerusalem before he rises up, it may be that a war involving Israel that results in Israel hitting back hard to places like Damascus (Isaiah 17:1) may be the final event to trigger the rise of the last major end-time Islamic leader.

The diplomatic crisis that Israel faces in the United Nations the remainder of this month is likely to have serious long-term consequences.

The Arab and Islamic World In the Bible, History, and Prophecy The Bible discusses the origins of the Arab world and discusses the Middle East in prophecy. What is ahead for the Middle East and those who follow Islam? What about the Imam Mahdi? What lies ahead for Turkey, Iran, and the other non-Arabic Muslims?

Hut in Africa

COGwriter

Here is a report from LCG’s latest World Ahead Weekly Update about Africa primarily written by Rees Ellis:

Africa Update

Mr. King and I had the immense privilege of meeting with faithful brethren and prospective members, some of whom had not seen a minister of God in many years, in Nigeria, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi over the last two weeks.

Our first stop was to meet Dr. Akin in Lagos, Nigeria, who has been patiently serving the congregation, according to instructions from Mr. Apartian, for the past seven years. He has organized services, Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations, and the Feast of Tabernacles in a peaceful setting in the heart of Lagos, with its population of more than 10 million people. We had the pleasure of visiting the hall where Mr. Harold Jackson inaugurated the Lagos congregations in the 1970s. We held services on September 3 in a nearby hotel, followed by a two-part Bible Study including a captivating description by Mr. King of the nations’ migration routes around the globe. Fellowshipping continued in the hotel parking lot before we said our good-byes and everyone made their way home.

Next was a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Agyemang-Duah, who were among the founding members of the London congregation dating back to the mid-60s, now re-established in their home country of Ghana. We also met with members Mr. and Mrs. Djan and Kwame Gokeh from Canada, recently returned to their homeland of Ghana and anxious to see a congregation established and the Gospel preached. One highlight was meeting Mrs. Agyemang-Duah’s 106-year-old mother! Mr. King conducted more visits before flying back to England and then on to Charlotte for the Council of Elder’s teleconference and the filming of two new TW programs.

I flew on to the Democratic Republic of Congo to meet with Mr. and Mrs. Mukendi Kapingamulume. It was with Mr. Mukendi’s help that the Church was first established in the Congo, so we hope that it won’t be long before we can reestablish the Work in Kinshasa. On the Sabbath of September 10, I met with more old-time members, including Mr. Bamongo and his family. I spoke of the importance of government in the Church and our submission to one another. It took more than an hour to reach the distant corner of the huge city of Kinshasa, where we met under a tin-roof “meeting-hall.” It was quite an ordeal since some of the roads we had to take were in total disrepair. It took even longer to come back into the city because the police confiscated a member’s video camera and it took quite some time to have it returned. With upcoming elections, it is normal that there are more controls and such inconveniences.

On the following Monday and Tuesday, I had the pleasure and honor of meeting with one of the patriarchs of the Bujumbura, Burundi congregation, Mr. Wenceslas Kamwenebusa, along with his wife and family. After having shown remarkable patience, his wife, Jacqueline, their daughter, Ada, and son-in-law, Elie Kanigi, having waited 24 years, were baptized. We realized that Satan was doing his best to thwart the baptisms. Mr. and Mrs. Kanigi received news that their house in neighboring Congo had been ransacked, leaving their children traumatized. Courage added to patience, and finally they are now baptized. To add to the joy of the occasion, the Kamwenebusas’ daughter, Prescille, and grandson, Méthode, were also baptized in Lake Tanganyika, the second largest freshwater lake in the world by volume, and the second deepest. Congratulations were in order at the Bible Study in Bujumbura that evening, where 24 of us gathered. There is growing interest in Burundi because of the Internet and high hopes that more people will be called. There is a solid, well-established core of brethren and there is much excitement as plans are laid for regular services in Burundi.

Please pray for the members in these African countries that they can meet in peace and safety and that the foundation is laid so an effective Work of preaching the Gospel can be done.—Rod King and Rees Ellis

The Living Church of God has congregations in other African countries as well (see http://www.lcg.org/cgi-bin/lcg/congregations/lcg-cong.cgi) such as Kenyan, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Swaziland, Lesotho, and South Africa (which my wife and I have visited).

The Living Church of God is trying to reach as much of the world as possible with the full gospel.  The progress being made in Africa, India & Indochina (LCG: Reaching Indochina & Australia, Plus Baptisms in India), and China (see LCG’s Telecast Getting the Gospel to China) this year has been encouraging.

TW: Europe to Buy Greece?

Europa Woman Riding the Beast Coin
Greek 2 Euro Coin Shows Europa Riding the Beast

COGwriter

In yesterday’s TW News & Prophecy, the Living Church of God reported:

Will Europe own Greece?

With the financial crisis weighing heavily on Greece, creditor nations are now discussing the issue of obtaining collateral for money they loan Greece–in the event that Greece proves unable to pay back any loans. Such collateral could include Greek real estate or shares in state assets such as utility companies. In fact, some have suggested the Greeks could sell some of their islands or even the Acropolis. Although no “deals” have yet to be agreed upon, given Greece’s forecasted inability to repay much of its mounting debt, other nations in Europe could wind up owning much of Greece (www.euractiv.com, August 29, 2011).

Long ago, God prophesied that at the end of the age, ten kings would give “their power and authority to” a European beast power (Revelation 17:7-13). While the Bible does not state exactly how this will occur, events across Europe are beginning to suggest ways in which “power and authority” might be given or surrendered to a central political power. If lending nations begin to demand collateral in assets in exchange for loans to handle the debt crisis, this would set a powerful and sobering precedent, not only for Europe, but also for the entire world–especially Israelite countries–because the borrower becomes a servant to the lender (see Deuteronomy 28:44; Proverbs 22:7).

If you received this E-Zine from a friend and would like to begin receiving your own copy click here to sign up for free.

I always have found it fascinating since I first saw a Greek 2 Euro coin with an immodest woman, who is supposed to represent the nymph Europa (from whom Europe got its name) riding a beast.  And while that story comes from Greek mythology, the Bible mentions the following related to Europe:

3 So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication.  5 And on her forehead a name was written:

MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

6 I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement.

7 But the angel said to me, “Why did you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns. 8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

9 “Here is the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits…18 And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth. (Revelation 17:3-9,18)

Most theological scholars, including Catholic ones, believe that the city of seven mountains (hills in some translations) represent Rome.

The fact that not only on the Greek coin, but also in front of the EU Council of Ministers Office in Brussels, Belgium there is a large statue of an immodest female Europa on a beast.  This shows that the European Union is not ashamed of its ties to these scriptures.  Years ago, a Larry Blake sent me several pictures of the woman (Europa) riding the bull (a beast) as symbols of European Union which are linked for additional proof of these ties.

The Bible itself shows that Europe must be restructured (Revelation 17:12-13)–but that particular restructure that Revelation refers to is probably not going to happen for several years.  As a major founder of historic Europe, Greece has often been of interest to those intent on forming a European Empire.

However, to get to that point of a final strong empire, there likely will be a variety of changes in what the EU is and how it is supposed to work. While Europe will always have fragility issues per Daniel 2:42-43, it will also be much more unified than it is today–as it would seem to have to be to fulfill certain aspects of Bible prophecy.

Iran hopes to increase its influence in the Middle East and North Africa as its “Supreme Leader” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned the Arabs against trusting the Americans and Europeans today:

Khamenei says the U.S. and NATO will try to dominate the future governments in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya. He says the Arab nations should not let this happen but preserve their Islamic traditions.

Khamenei contends the collapse of the regimes in Egypt and Tunisia was a blow to U.S. influence in the region and an “Islamic awakening.”

Tehran has portrayed the uprisings as a replay of its own 1979 Islamic Revolution that toppled the pro-U.S. shah and brought hardline clerics to power.  http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle-east/irans-top-leader-warns-arab-nations-that-had-uprisings-not-to-trust-us-nato/2011/09/17/gIQAXgzMZK_story.html

Iran’s revolution replaced a secular pro-Western, pro-economic growth, leader with leaders with a highly radical Islamic agenda.  Iran’s current president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has publicly stated that the purpose of the Iranian revolution was to prepare the way for an Islamic leader, the 12th Imam, also called the Imam Mahdi, to rise up (this was several years ago, but he still seems to believe it).  This Imam Mahdi sounds a lot like the final King of the South that the Bible warns against.

Furthermore, earlier this year, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed that it was the Imam Mahdi who was behind the revolutions in the various Arab lands as well as other events in the world (see Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: World Order About to Collapse, Mahdi Behind it).  He also was part of a video earlier this year that indicated that Iran intended to relatively soon invade and takeover Jerusalem so that the Imam Mahdi would rise up.  The video hinted that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was somehow prophesied within Islam as a particular leader that would do that (see Iran’s Ahmadinejad to Conquer Jerusalem?).

Various prophecies of the Mahdi state that he would return in an even numbered year, like the end 2012 (the Islamic calendar runs differently than the Roman calendar). The Mahdi is supposed to be recognized in an even numbered year, and since Ahmadinejad’s term ends in 2013 (Islamic year 1434), and he indicated he wanted to cause the Mahdi to arrive before he leaves office, he may cause enough chaos to try to cause this to happen soon (the current Islamic year 1432 ends November 26, 2011, so the current year until then is another time that the Mahdi could be expected based on Islamic prophecy). It may even be that the bid for Palestinian statehood at the United Nations this month could be a possible trigger for this (though not necessarily an immediate trigger).

To bring enough Arab nations together, I have felt that some type of “strongman” needed to rise up. One who Arabs would tend to respect–who might use the title Imam Mahdi and/or Caliph.  This is also consistent with the historical positions of various Church of God writers in the past.  Notice a few examples:

The supreme office of caliph, originally elective, became hereditary…Eventually…caliphs became figurehead or “puppet” leaders…Many Arabs…seek to re-create the political and theological unity of the early Islamic caliphate (Stump K. The Arab World in Prophecy. Plain Truth, December 1979, pp. 9-10).

Al Qaeda named its Internet newscast, which debuted in September, ‘The Voice of the Caliphate.’…Kerem Acar, a tailor in central Istanbul {said} ‘…one day maybe my children’s children will see someone declare himself the caliph, like the pope, and have an impact’” (January 14, 2006). Indeed, a coming “Mahdi” whose arrival Muslims are expecting—in Bible prophecy known as the “King of the South” (Daniel 11:40–45)—will soon arise and have a dramatic impact on world events. This powerful Muslim religious leader will unite many of the more than one billion Muslims. He will pose a genuine threat to the coming European Empire, which will have to crush that threat in order to continue exploiting Middle Eastern oil to further its military ambitions. (Meredith RC. Prophecy Fulfilled: God’s Hand in World Affairs. LCG Booklet, 2007, pp. 16-17)

Opinion polls show that significant majorities in many Arab countries favor the establishment of Sharia law, derived from the Qur’an and centuries of Muslim jurisprudence. Several nations, such as Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen already have Sharia law in some form. Others, such as Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Pakistan, Syria, Qatar and United Arab Emirates, mix Sharia with other systems. To the great surprise of many Western analysts, University of Maryland researchers polled Arab nations and found that substantial majorities in Pakistan, Egypt and Morocco favored the establishment of the Caliphate—which would mean autocratic Islamist rule!…(Daniel 11:40–45…This “king of the South” will be a great leader, likely the head of a Muslim coalition, who will attack or challenge a great northern power in Europe. Europeans are well aware of the threat of Islam. (Wakefield D.  Nine-Eleven Plus Ten.  Tomorrow’s World magazine, September-October 2011, p. 24).

As the above shows, we in the Living Church of God have long taught that a pan-Islamic leader will rise up in the Middle East and become the final King of the South in Bible prophecy (Daniel 11:40).  Iran wants to make this happen.

Its “supreme leader’s” warnings today are apparently intended to fan the flames of pro-Islamic and anti-Western sentiment in the Arab lands and to encourage them to install less secular governments than they have had.  And ultimately, the Arabs will do that.

In the meantime, however, I would not be surprised if Iran and Syria get together to cause trouble (including possible war) with Israel as a means of hoping to provoke the rise of the Imam Mahdi, as well as to hope to get the Arab states to support the Iranian version of Shi’ite Islam (most of the Arab nations are mainly Sunni Islam).

Syria is being increasingly isolated by the West and may need to rely more and more on Iran for economic and other assistance.  And while Iran will not succeed in destroying Israel (though an Iranian-Syrian attack could, and probably would, do a lot of damage to Israel), this does not mean that it will not engage in warfare for the hope of accomplishing that.  If so, Syria may regret it (cf. Isaiah 17:1).

Watch (Mark 13:37).

COGWA and UCG News

The presidents of both COGWA (Church of God, a Worldwide Association) and the United Church of God (UCG) sent out letters a day or so ago.  COGWA was formed out of a split from UCG in 2010 (the overwhelming majority of the Latin American ministers and slightly more than 1/2 of the paid US ministry in UCG went with COGWA).

Since the split, COGWA has spent a lot of efforts in getting organized, while UCG has tended to act like without those who went to COGWA that it has been freed to do more public proclamation of the gospel.  Their respective letters again confirmed this.

For example, COGWA’s President Jim Franks reported:

We passed another milestone this week when the Ministerial Board of Directors (MBOD) approved two men to serve in administrative positions: Doug Horchak as operation manager for Ministerial Services and Clyde Kilough as operation manager for Media…

I am also pleased to announce that on Wednesday the board, by unanimous approval appointed a permanent Doctrine Committee as required in our governing documents. The men approved by the Ministerial Board of Directors as members of the Doctrine Committee are:

  • John Foster
  • Bruce Gore
  • Don Henson
  • David Johnson
  • Ralph Levy

…As a result of three members of the MBOD having now been selected for the administration, we have three vacancies to fill (a person who serves in the administration is ineligible for the board). This will be done by a special election of the elders that is scheduled to begin on Monday, Sept. 19, and conclude on Monday, Oct. 3…As a group, we are convinced that we need a central office to be efficient and good stewards of God’s tithes…As you can see, a lot of “organizational” activity has occurred in the past few days…

While UCG’s President Melvin Rhodes reported:

That’s why we recently hosted the Kingdom of God Bible Seminars, which were attended by more than a thousand new people who were warmly welcomed by members of the United Church of God, eager to participate in sharing their hope of the Kingdom with others.

UCG somewhat patterned their “Kingdom of God Bible Seminars” after the successful Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations of the Living Church of God (LCG).  One difference seems to be that UCG essentially started much later, and seems to have been focused more on a one-time approach (though they may do others); whereas LCG does them almost all the time (actually, when I spoke with LCG Evangelist Richard Ames late yesterday, he mentioned some others he was planning to do, and it seems that almost every time I speak to LCG Evangelist Douglas Winnail, he has either just finished doing some or is about to do more).

Anyway, Jesus said you would know them by their fruits.

NY Mayor Warns of Riots in the Streets

Mayor Bloomberg predicts riots in the streets if economy doesn’t create more jobs

I have been writing for a long time that civil unrest and riots will happen in the USA.  It is interesting that the mayor of New York City is starting to warn about rioting.

Jesus foretold troubles as part of the beginning of sorrows:

8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows.  (Mark 13:8)

5 When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.” (Revelation 6:5-6)

Yet, there is good news as ultimately, God’s kingdom will come and food shortages will be gone:

16 They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore (Revelation 7:16).

But a terrible hour of trial is coming first (Revelation 3:10; Jeremiah 30:7). But it too will end.

As Jesus said:

37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:36-37)

Tougher times are coming. And for some parts of the world these tougher time may be here now. People who can prepare, should: both spiritually and physically. Westerners need to realize that this will not only affect people in places like Africa, Asia, and the Middle East–the Anglo-descended nations of the West will themselves suffer hunger, civil unrest, famine, and worse. Of course, between the recent London riots in the UK (Ephraim) and “flashmobs” in the USA (Manasseh), to a degree, this unrest has began.

And speaking of the Anglo-descended nations, in a recent co-worker letter, Dr. Roderick C. Meredith of the Living Church of God wrote:

So it seems that the “beginning of sorrows” has certainly been escalating in Ephraim and Manasseh! Maybe it will help some few people to actually “wake up”! (Meredith RC. LCG Co-worker letter, August 15, 2011)

The sorrows and troubles are just beginning and will get much worse. Hopefully, people will wake up.

TW: China Buying Into Italy?

In today’s, TW News & Prophecy E-Zine, the Living Church of God (LCG) reports:

China buying into Italy?

“Italy confirmed it held talks with Chinese officials amid speculation Rome is looking to persuade Beijing to buy its bonds or invest in its companies, while premier Silvio Berlusconi flew to Brussels Tuesday to discuss the market turmoil.” While Berlusconi met with the EU President about Italy’s debt, his government was apparently seeking bailout help from China. The Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times both reported that Italian talks took place last week with the chairman of China Investment Corp.According to a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, “Europe will continue to be one of China’s main investment markets. We will also expand financial and economic cooperation and investment cooperation with European countries to jointly address the financial crisis.” China Expert Romeo Orlandi identified the pros and risks of the situation with China: “In principle it’s a win-win situation: Italy needs money, China has the world’s largest reserves. But this means that we must sell pieces of Italy to China.” He added that “the talks may be an indication of how serious Italy’s financial troubles are” (Associated Press, September 13, 2011).

Not only do Italy’s recent actions indicate the depth of the nation’s financial woes, they also highlight the tenuous iron-and-clay nature of the European Union–a union of nations whose unstable merger was prophesied millennia ago (Daniel 2:41-43). If China becomes a player in Europe, this may hasten the disruption and rearrangement of the current 27-nation EU. This action could be the beginning of significant developments across Europe.

China is increasing its influence around the world and is also very interested in Europe (amongst other reasons, it is looking for a market for its goods to augment and/or replace the USA).

The reality is that much of what China itself appears to be doing is consistent with what the late Deng Xiaoping once expressed,

China must hide brightness and nourish obscurity . . . to bide our time and build up our capabilities (Source: Times Online).

China as been increasing its influence, and the Bible indicates it will have an important role in the end time.  But even more so, will Europe.
