Today is observed in the USA as Martin Luther King, Jr. day. And although I normally do not take this day off (nor presidents’ days unless sometimes when I am out of town), I thought it might be appropriate to quote some writings from the late Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King was a Baptist minister who became best known as a civil rights activist. Decades ago, he wrote about many things, including Mithraism. Mithraism was a religion that observed Sunday and had followers such as the Roman Emperor Constantine in the 4th century.

Here is some of what Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote about it in a paper dated November 23, 1949:

In Avesta, Mithra was the genius of celestial light…The doctrine of the immortality of the soul was another view which was very prominent in Mithraism…

Women were compelled to seek salvation in some other cult, for Mithraism excluded them entirely…

When Mithraism is compared to Christianity, there are surprisingly many points of similarity. Of all the mystery cults, Mithraism was the greatest competitor of Christianity…

That Christians did copy and borrow from Mithraism cannot be denied (King ML. The papers of Martin Luther King, Jr, Volume 4. Clayborne Carson, Ralph Luker, Penny A. Russell editors/compliers. University of California Press, 1992, pp. 213-214, 217, 222, 224).

Here are some of his writings dated February 15, 1950:

Mithraism…was suppressed by the Christians sometime in the latter part of the fourth century A.D.: but its collapse seems to have been due to the fact that by that time many of its doctrines had been adopted by the church, so that it was practically absorbed by its rival.

…the Church made a sacred day out of Sunday partially because…of the resurrection. But when we observe a little further we find that as a solar festival, Sunday was the sacred day of Mithra: it is also interesting to notice that since Mithra was addressed as Lord, Sunday must have been “the Lord’s Day” long before Christian use. It is also to be noticed that our Christmas, December 25th, was the birthday of Mithra, and was only taken over in the Fourth Century as the date, actually unknown, of the birth of Jesus.

To make the picture a little more clear, we may list a few of the similarities between these two religions: (1) Both regard Sunday as a Holy Day. (2) December 25 came to be considered as the anniversary of the birth of Mithra and Christ also. (3) Baptism and a ritual meal were important parts of both groups…

In summary we may say that the belief in immortality, a mediator between god and man, the observance of certain sacramental rites…were common to Mithraism and Christianity. (King ML. Notice that Martin Luther King, Jr. clearly understood that the Sunday churches dropped the Sabbath, that “the Lord’s Day” essentially first meant the day of Mithra, and that the worlds’ churches did adopt many practices from Mithraism. Much of what now is called “Christianity” is a compromise with the religion of Mithraism.

I wish that Martin Luther King, Jr. and others would have emphasized this aspect of his writings more. I would also add that Christians faithful to the original teachings of Christ, the apostles, and the New Testament did not adopt the practices of Mithraism.

Actually, early records show that there were basically two main groups that professed Christianity. One that was mainly based upon the Bible, and the other that accepted doctrines from those who followed Simon Magus and Mithras.

While Dr. King was most known for his civil rights protests, he figured out that much of what passed for Christianity in his day was really a form that adopted Mithratic practices.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will ask Congress Tuesday to provide a $500 “second earner” tax credit and expanded child tax credits for children under age 5 to help cover child care costs as part of an ambitious State of the Union address his aides say will prioritize help for middle class families.

U.S. President Barack Obama wants to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans and the largest financial firms, which he says will strengthen the middle class.

The proposals, outlined in a White House press release…The president will announce the proposals Tuesday in his annual State of the Union address on Capitol Hill. Obama says he wants to make sure the rich pay their fair share of taxes… http://www.voanews.com/content/obama-seeks-tax-reform/2603272.html

The US President can propose what he wishes.  Many like the populous appeal of getting the affluent to pay their ‘fair share’ of taxes.  Yet many do not realize that in the USA, the top one percent already pay a higher proportion of the taxes.  Notice two reports about USA taxes:

The bottom 20% of earners make 3% of the income and pay 2% of the taxes; the middle 20% make 11% and pay 10%; and the top 1% make 21% and pay 22%.  http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2012/07/debating-tax-burden

Those making over $200,000 comprise just over 5 percent of the nation’s taxpayers, earn 32.3 percent of the income, but pay 46.7 percent of total federal taxes and 70 percent of federal income taxes. http://taxfoundation.org/blog/do-rich-pay-their-fair-share

The affluent in the USA already pay most of the taxes.

The morning after Barack Obama defeated Mitt Romney for the US presidency, on November 7, 2012, I posted the following:

I believe the USA is going down a path where its primary direction will not be one of improvement. The voters of the USA decided, overall, to go down a similar path, which likely means more debt, more moral decline, more regulation, and continued periodic governmental gridlock.  And those who pay the disproportionate share of the taxes in the United States will be expected to pay more taxes…

Notice that I also warned that debt would increase–and debt has increased (see also the post Romney vs. Obama for details).

While tax reform has its place, it is not the root cause of economic and other problems that the USA is facing.  Yet, people often want to take from others, so talking about taking from the affluent does have a certain political appeal.

A long-time financial adviser named Harvey Organ claims that claims that because of insufficient gold in the central banks of USA and UK, that Shanghai would bring about exposing this and that this would lead to a massive, overnight, rise in the price of gold and silver, diminished value of their currencies. He states a market collapse will occur before the end of 2014, that the petroyuan will replace the petrodollar, and that a Chinese led New World Order will be in place for 2015. Is this possible? Pope Francis delivered Mass for millions of Filipinos gathered under a steady rain in Manila’s Rizal Park and surrounding areas on Sunday – the final day of his four-day visit to the Philippines.

Authorities say some six million people waited for the pope’s motorcade to pass near the park and attended the Mass, surpassing the five million record set by Pope John Paul the Second at the same park in 1995. …

Pope Francis concluded his trip to Asia on Sunday with an open-air Mass for a rain-drenched crowd in Manila that the Vatican and the government said drew up to seven million people, the largest ever for a papal event.

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said the office of the president told the Vatican that between six and seven million attended the Mass in Manila’s Rizal Park and surrounding areas.

“We are not able to count all these people, obviously, or to verify this, but in any case, we have seen so many people that we believe that it is possible,” Lombardi told a briefing.

“If this is true, and we think it is, this is the largest event in the history of the popes,” he said, noting that Pope John Paul drew some five million to the same area in 1995.

The 78-year-old pope, wearing a transparent yellow poncho over his white cassock, was driven through the ecstatic crowd in a “popemobile” modified from a jeepney, the most popular mode of transport in the Philippines which is based on a U.S. military vehicle used in World War II.

Notice the portion I bolded above.  Pope Francis is encouraging and promoting idolatry.

Additionally, Pope Francis supports a false ecumenical and interfaith agenda which attempts to pretend that doctrinal and biblical truths are not as important as his Babylonian form of unity–a unity that the Bible warns against (Revelation 18:1-8; Zechariah 2:6-7).

Pope Francis claims to be a successor to the apostles.  Now notice what the longest living apostle, John, wrote as a warning, at the end of his first epistle:

21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. (1 John 5:21)

Pope Francis is doing the opposite.  He is encouraging people to get closer to idols, which are what the ‘blessed statues’ essentially are.  Notice also what the Apostle Peter wrote:

18 … knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers (1 Peter 1:18).

The Apostle Peter wrote against traditions involving corruptible things–many idols have some silver and/or gold.

Yet, millions flocked to here Pope Francis.

So where is this leading?

Pope Francis has increased the popularity of the Vatican.  He has also been involved in political issues (like Cuba).  He recently again came out in support of efforts to deal with ‘climate change.’  He pushes an ecumenical and interfaith agenda.  He keeps pushing for economic changes.

The Bible warns of an ecumenical faith that rises up in the time of the end (Revelation 13:4,8).  It warns people to flee from it (Revelation 18:1-4; Zechariah 2:6-7).  The Bible warns that a powerful city of seven hills (Revelation 17:4-7) has/will improperly influence the world (Revelation 17:18).  The Bible warns that one with religious and secular authority (called the two-horned beast) will cause people to engage in false worship and be part of a changed economic system (Revelation 13:11-18).

While Pope Francis may or may not (his age is a factor against) be the final two-horned beast of Revelation 13:11, he has some of its characteristics.  Notice:

11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. (Revelation 13:11)

While Pope Francis may look like a lamb to many, many of his words and actions are those of Satan the dragon (Revelation 12:9).  Pope Francis should stand against idolatry and not encourage it as he regularly does, and as he did today.

Mitt Romney and Barack Obama

Mitt Romney made a lot of foreign policy statements when a candidate for the presidency of the USA in 2012 that the winner, Barack Obama, disagreed with.  On many, who was right according to Politico?

“The results of the Hillary Clinton-Barack Obama foreign policy have been devastating,” Romney declared at the Republican National Committee’s winter meeting in San Diego on Friday. “The world is not safer.”  … “Romney was right about the world getting more complicated,” said Mieke Eoyang, director of the National Security Project at the moderate Democratic think tank Third Way. “But a complicated world doesn’t mean a more simplistic response, which is what Romney was offering.”

Back in 2012, President Barack Obama was less charitable. “You haven’t been in a position to actually execute foreign policy,” Obama told Romney in an October debate. “But every time you’ve offered an opinion, you’ve been wrong.” More than two years later, however, hindsight suggests that’s not true. Romney offered warnings on several major issues that now appear prescient. On Iraq, for instance, Romney told an audience in November 2011 that America’s withdrawal from the country the prior year was “an enormous mistake,” one that “puts at risk many of the victories that were hard-won by the men and women who have served there.” Obama later scoffed at his rival’s claim that the U.S. should have maintained a long-term troop presence in Iraq. Two years later, Obama has ordered thousands of troops back there to prevent the country’s collapse.

Putin’s annexation of Crimea and his intervention in eastern Ukraine dominated much of last year for Obama. But as early as December 2011 Romney called Putin ”a real threat to the stability and peace of the world,” noting that the Russian president’s rhetoric had been growing sharper.

After Romney later called Russia America’s top “geopolitical foe,” blocking U.S. interests at the United Nations and elsewhere, Obama openly ridiculed him: “The 1980s are calling to ask for their foreign policy back,” the president told Romney in an October 2012 debate. “You know, the Cold War’s been over for 20 years.” Romney also cast repeated doubt on Obama’s claim that, after Osama bin Laden’s killing, al Qaeda was “on the run.”

He warned about the spread of radical Islam in the Middle East and North Africa. “This is a group that is now involved in 10 or 12 countries, and it presents an enormous threat … and we must have a comprehensive strategy to help reject this kind of extremism,” Romney said. That characterization of the Islamist threat seems more apt as extremist violence surges around the world. Whether or not Mitt Romney again runs for the USA presidency, there have been disturbing foreign policy positions from the Obama Administration.

While foreign policy is one thing, there are other issues.  The morning after Barack Obama defeated Mitt Romney for the US presidency, on November 7, 2012, I posted the following:

I believe the USA is going down a path where its primary direction will not be one of improvement. The voters of the USA decided, overall, to go down a similar path, which likely means more debt, more moral decline, more regulation, and continued periodic governmental gridlock.  And those who pay the disproportionate share of the taxes in the United States will be expected to pay more taxes, and probably starting in several weeks. That being said, let me state that Barack Obama is not the final Antichrist like some on the internet have claimed.

Yes, I do believe that Barack Obama is “apocalyptic,” meaning that he has and will take steps that will lead to the destruction of the United States–although I do not believe that the great tribulation will begin until AFTER his next term ends.  Also, perhaps it needs to be made clear that I also was not an endorser of Mormon Mitt Romney (see, for example, Voting for the Lesser of Two Evils is Still not Good, Romney and Obama on ‘Social Issues’, and US Presidential Election Tomorrow: Pray and Fast) and did not believe he would be able to lead the USA away from its accelerating path to destruction.  …

Habakkuk 2 makes clear that at the appointed time of the end, a great borrowing people will be destroyed (Habakkuk 2:3-8).  Something similar is in Deuteronomy 28:42-51.  No nation in the history of humankind has ever accumulated as much debt as the United States of America (because the U.K. may have close to the highest amount of per capita debt, its fate would seem to be similar).  Yet, the relationship between debt accumulation and prophesied destruction remains unapparent to many. And although President Obama inherited a debt-laden nation, his policies, according to his own public pronouncements, have lead and will continue to lead to greatly increased U.S.A. debt.  These increases of debt are likely to continue past the point of no return and become one of the final factors that will cause creditors to rise up and destroy the U.S.A.

As far as debt goes, the day Barack Obama I reported that, the total US Federal Debt was as follows according to the US Treasury:

The deficits have gone up more under the Obama Administration than any in USA history. And the above only counts the admitted federal debt. The USA is the most indebted nation in the history of humanity.

As far as moral decline, after Barack Obama decided to no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and the basic result is that most states in the USA now allow homosexual marriages.  Barack Obama also took steps to assist the sales of the intoxicating drug marijuana, to mention just two.

As far as gridlock goes, the USA has had a type of political gridlock which has prevented serious deficit control, as well as an inability to address many other serious issues facing that country.

As far as foreign policy goes, I put the following in a book that came out in January 2013:

Barack Hussein Obama…his administration will help lead to the rise of the future King of the South who is mentioned in end time Bible prophecy. …

Furthermore, the Bible predicts that at the appointed time, a King of the North and a King of the South with rise (Daniel 11:27,39-40)…

Barack Obama…would be expected to support greater union amongst the Europeans and greater union amongst some of the Islamic peoples…Barack Obama is enabling the rise of the final Antichrist.

And yes, Barack Obama has taken steps that are enabling the rise of the kings of the North and South of biblical prophecy, as well as the final Antichrist (e.g. ‘Climate change’ objectives and other shared goals of Pope Francis and Barack Obama).

However, if Mitt Romney ever were to be elected USA president, so would he.

Belgium deployed hundreds of troops to protect against Islamic terrorists:

Belgium is deploying hundreds of troops to guard potential targets of terrorism, including Jewish sites and diplomatic missions, following a series of raids and arrests, the defense minister said on Saturday.

Up to 300 military will be stationed at locations such as the U.S. and Israeli embassies in Brussels and NATO and EU institutions.

Troops will reinforce police at least until Thursday, when authorities will review the national threat level, set at 3 on a scale of 4 this week.

“It’s very important to say that this wasn’t a simple decision. But it was necessary, at a time when police are overly engaged, for the army to enter in a supporting role,” Defense Minister Steven Vandeput told reporters.

On Thursday, two gunmen were killed in the Belgian town of Verviers during raids on an Islamist group that authorities said was planning to attack police. …Friday, more than two dozen suspects were arrested in Belgium, France, Germany and Ireland in continuing searches for suspected terrorists, as the region remains on alert for potential attacks.

In Germany, police say they have arrested two men in Berlin on suspicion they were recruiting fighters for the Islamic State group in Syria.

The suspects were detained Friday during a series of raids by more than 200 police officers on 12 properties in the German capital.

In Ireland, police arrested a suspected French-Algerian militant at Dublin Airport when he tried to enter the country using a false passport.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Friday, the head of the European Union’s police agency, Europol, said Europe must cooperate more closely to prevent attacks like last week’s deadly incidents in Paris.

Europe is taking notice of Islamic terrorists and starting to take more steps. Public opinion there basically seems to support all of this. The time will come when Islam is basically eliminated from Europe.  Many in Europe are realizing that Islam has a major problem.

But it is not just some in Europe that have figured this out.  A reader sent me links to the following:

Muslim leaders must publicly condemn jihadist terror attacks like the deadly strikes in France and concede “Islam has a problem,” Louisiana Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal says.

“If Islam does not support what is happening in the name of Islam, then they need to stand up and stop it,” Jindal declares in a speech he’ll give Monday in London, the Daily Caller reports.

“Many Islamic leaders argue that these are the acts of a radical few.”

But, Jindal’s speech at the Henry Jackson Society will argue, “Let’s be honest here, Islam has a problem.” …

“To be clear, I have no interest in defaming any religion, nor do I have any interest in assigning the maniacal acts of radical Islamists to millions of Muslims worldwide. I’m interested only in dealing with reality and facts.

One of the ‘solutions’ that people like Newt Gingrich and Bobby Jindal seem to be actually pushing for is a confederation of Islamic states to attempt to control ‘radical Islam.’  The Bible tells of a rise of a confederation called the King of the South which is composed of nations that are currently predominantly Islamic–but that confederation will not end well (Daniel 11:40-43; Ezekiel 30:2-8).

Does Islam have a problem with terrorism?

Yes.

While I do not agree with all of the above, the reality is that Islam does have a problem with terrorism.  The Bible predicts more terrorism (Leviticus 26:14-17; Deuteronomy 32:25; Ezekiel 21:12; Psalms 73:12,19; Proverbs 1:25-27), and as I have written before, I believe that despite whatever steps are taken now, more terrorism will come–and much, but not all, of it from Islamic sources.

Expect Germany, France, and other parts of Europe to be hit by terrorist acts and a leader in Europe to rise up, known as the King of the North (who will somewhat sound peaceful but will end up be terroristic in a persecuting way per Daniel 7:25).

After he arises to a degree, a deal will take place:

27 Both these kings’ hearts shall be bent on evil, and they shall speak lies at the same table; but it shall not prosper, for the end will still be at the appointed time. (Daniel 11:27)

The two kings listed above are the kings of the North (a European power) and of the South (a power made up of nations that are predominantly Islamic).

The deal of Daniel 11:27 could also be related to the following:

3 They have taken crafty counsel against Your people,
And consulted together against Your sheltered ones.
4 They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation,
That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”

5 For they have consulted together with one consent;
They form a confederacy against You:
6 The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites;
Moab and the Hagrites;
7 Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek;
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
8 Assyria also has joined with them;
They have helped the children of Lot.  (Psalms 83:3-8)

Most of the descendants of the peoples listed above, other than Assyria, are Muslim.  The Muslims will be involved in a ‘crafty counsel’–a terroristic plan–to destroy various descendants of Israel.  This will basically be the descendants of Israel’s sons Ephraim and Manasseh, who Israel placed his name upon:

14 Then Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the firstborn. 15 And he blessed Joseph, and said:

“God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
The God who has fed me all my life long to this day,
16 The Angel who has redeemed me from all evil,
Bless the lads;
Let my name be named upon them,
And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
And let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.” (Genesis 48:14-16)

By Israel placing his name upon them, this helps show that certain prophecies related to ‘Israel’ apply to the descendants of Ephraim and Manasseh, who today are many of the British and North American (not Latin American) peoples.  As far as the name ‘Isaac’ goes, history records about groups of people called Saxons, which many realize means Isaac’s sons (see Anglo – America in Prophecy & the Lost Tribes of Israel).  There will be conflict between the descendants of the peoples in Psalm 83 and the British and North American peoples.

Islam does have a problem.  The ‘solution’ that some of the states in the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and North America seem to be leaning towards imposing now will result in the formation of a confederation of Islamic nations.

Although some will proclaim that this will lead to peace (and it will likely lead to a temporary peace per Daniel 9:27), it will end in disaster (1 Thessalonians 5:3) for the USA, its British-descended allies (United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand), as well as most of the Islamic nations themselves (Daniel 11:40-43; Ezekiel 30:2-8).

The more conflict we see between ‘radical Islam’ and the West, the closer we are getting to some of the deals that the Bible prophesies.

‘Boy Who Came Back From Heaven’ going back to publisher

Tyndale House, a major Christian publisher, has announced that it will stop selling “The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven,” by Alex Malarkey and his father, Kevin Malarkey.

The best-selling book, first published in 2010, describes what Alex experienced while he lay in a coma after a car accident when he was 6 years old. The coma lasted two months, and his injuries left him paralyzed, but the subsequent spiritual memoir — with its assuring description of “Miracles, Angels, and Life beyond This World” — became part of a popular genre of “heavenly tourism,” which has been controversial among orthodox Christians.

Earlier this week, Alex recanted his testimony about the afterlife. In an open letter to Christian bookstores posted on the Pulpit and Pen Web site, Alex states flatly: “I did not die. I did not go to Heaven.”

Referring to the injuries that continue to make it difficult for him to express himself, Alex writes, “Please forgive the brevity, but because of my limitations I have to keep this short…. I said I went to heaven because I thought it would get me attention. When I made the claims that I did, I had never read the Bible. People have profited from lies, and continue to. They should read the Bible, which is enough. The Bible is the only source of truth. Anything written by man cannot be infallible.”

This evening, Todd Starowitz, public relations director of Tyndale House, told The Washington Post: “Tyndale has decided to take the book and related ancillary products out of print.”…

So Alex Malarkey’s ‘best selling’ ‘true story’ is admitted to be false. Notice the definition of the word malarkey:

meaningless talk; nonsense.

Sadly, Alex Malarkey lived up to his name for years. Hopefully, he will further repent.  Admitting his lie was a good step.

I would also add that a similar story to Malarkey’s, Heaven is for Real, which is about Colton Burpo allegedly going to heaven, is also false (see Heaven is for real, but the movie’ s premise is not), but Colton Burpo has not publicly admitted it (maybe Colton Burpo did have a dream or something, but he did not go to heaven).

Though Protestants and others have been misled by Malarkey and Burpo, they should not have as they should have paid closer attention to what the Bible shows.

Notice what Jesus taught:

12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. (John 3:12-13)

Notice what the Apostle Peter taught:

29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:

‘The Lord said to my Lord,
‘Sit at My right hand,
35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” (Acts 2:29-35)

Humans do not go to heaven upon death. They await the resurrection.

Notice also what the Old Testament teaches:

5 For the living know that they will die;
But the dead know nothing, (Ecclesiastes 9:5)

14 If a man dies, shall he live again?
All the days of my hard service I will wait,
Till my change comes. (Job 14:14)

Early Christians absolutely did not believe that when they died they immediately went to heaven (see Did Early Christians Teach Going to Heaven?). Early Christians taught that they were in the grave awaiting the resurrection.
